  • My mac is slowly dying!

It's a whole series of bizarre things which started last Saturday when I booted up my mac.
First there is a program window permanently open called "loginwindow", spotlight has disappeared, and whenever I type it stops for a bit and says "cannot contact spell checker."
Most annoyingly I cannot empty the trash, and now my computer is full! Quicktime crashes whenever I open it, and many icons in finder are missing.
I have no idea whats going on!! I am virus free!
    Machine Name: Mac mini
    Machine Model: PowerMac10,1
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.2)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 1.25 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 512 MB
    Bus Speed: 167 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.8.9f4
    Serial Number: VM5300FUTYV

250mb of available space left is most certainly in the danger zone. Of course I can not say without doubt that there isn't something else going on with your system, but with that little space left you can expect system issues.
The first thing I would do in your situation is free up enough space to be able to start backing up your important documents either to an external or cd/dvd's. After that I would start freeing whatever space you can. Then, you can start attacking the problems you are having.
Hopefully someone more knowledgeable with space issues will offer a more specific course of action. Personally, for performance and stability reasons, I never let my internal hard drive go below 40% full.
This may be excessive, but I haven't had any issues for over a year on the system I am currently using.
    Good luck!!

  • My mac mini unexpectedly died!

    Hello all,
I bought a mac mini 10 days ago. It was all so nice when today I looked at the mac (I was abandoned it for about 10 minutes) and I found a strange screen, saying to restart the machine. Late I found this screen is an analog to the Windows Blue Screen Of Death. I looked in the logs and what I found:

My mac mini runs Mac OS X 10.5.4 and has 2 GB RAM (it was replaced by a qualified technician at the store). Could it be the problem?
Any ideas? Thank you in advance.

    Hello Nick,
Thank you for your reply. I ran Apple Hardware Test (version 3A141) and it found nothing wrong. I tried to run Memtest86+ but somehow the CD (Ultimate Boot CD) did not manage to start the tests. Maybe the HFS+ is the reason, I do not know. However I ran Apple Hardware Test again and again (with thorough testing) and it seems all is OK. I did not have any devices attached to my mac except keyboard (aluminum one, wired) and a mouse (wired one). Ah I remember I had Air Port turned on and ethernet on. My embedded firewall was turned on high security too. And meanwhile I had three ssh connections with X forwarding and emacs was running. So far I did not receive any panics anymore.
Thank you again for your reply.

  • HT1689 My Mac Mini HardDrive died

and sadly at the same time when I updated my iPod Touch to iOS6 I lost ALL my songs, books and movies.
Can I 'redownload' All the purchases I have made?
Also can you recommend someone who may be able to retrieve the data from the Mac Mini?

    Hello Nick,
Thank you for your reply.

  • Mac mini 2010 died (?) during Mavericks install gone wrong

Tried to update my 2010 ML mac mini today. Downloaded the "free update", but instead of proceeding with the install tried to reboot the system to see if it will now appear in the recovery mode (Cmd+R). All I got was a white screen and non-functioning keyboard (wired or wireless) - the computer would not react to any key combos. Any advice is much appreciated.

Thank you for your help, woodmeister50. I followed the same process except for these two:
When finished, go to Finder and navigate within the newly created USB drive to System > Installation > and delete the file (alias) located here named “Packages” – keep this window open
Go back to the ‘OS X Install ESD’ mounted drive, and drag & drop the “Packages” folder into the /System/Installation/ directory you just deleted the Packages alias from, let this large folder copy
since it was a DVD... possibly this was the reason it didn't boot up.
As for Target Disk mode... will read up on that, never tried it before, although from what I'm seeing, it involves pressing "T" on the keyboard - and my mini doesn't respond to it.
Also, I did check the drive by removing it from the mini and attaching to the USB box... seems to be ok. I also tried another drive that was originally there, also in perfectly working condition (I upgraded this mini to SSD about 6 months ago, and everything was working great on ML).
Another idea  I had is to use bootable SD card, since it doesn't seem to rely on the now-disfunctional USB interface. Although I might be wrong.
Btw, is there any way to force-eject the DVD without a keyboard/mouse?

  • How do I move my OS files from one drive to another on a Mac Mini server

My main drive on my Mac mini is dying so I need to move all my files, including the OS, to the other drive.  Do I just copy all the files over then delete the old ones and reboot?

The disk that was the "Lower" is the one you cloned to. When you clone, the name of source disk is copied with the contents to the target disk.
The lower HD is the one closest to the bottom of the Mini.
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing+Mac+Mini+Late+2012+Dual+Hard+Drive+Kit/11 713Thus if you cloned the bad drive, the bad drive is in the lower location.
This says how to replae the lower drive.
Are both drives identicatal drives (except for SN)? If not maybe y could comfirm by that.
Also, how was it failing? The If it SMART errors you can tell in there are any SMART errors idenfied for that disk in Disk Utilty.
Further, if you go to Disk Utility and click on the HD itself, not Server HD, that will say upper or lower in bottom left

  • Why wont my mac mini recognize my wireless keyboard?

Help! I just bought a mac mini and an apple wireless keyboard, but it wont recognize the keyboard.  I can do nothing towards registering my mac mini.

I have the same problem.  My late 2009 mac mini just died three days ago.  I bought a new mac mini (late 2012 version) and am trying to hook all up and get going.  I have the monitor and mouse talking to the mac mini.  When I get to the keyboard screen I get nothing but an image of the side of a keyboard.  At first I received a passcode to input on the keyboard and hit return.  I did it and nothing happened.  The passcode appeared again and I entered it and again nothing.  I read to turn off the keyboard and start again.  I've donw this and now I don't even get the passcode option.  Just a screen with the side of the keyboard.  What shall I do.  Does it think it's paired with the 'dead' mac mini?  I read that I need a wiired keyboard to pair the two, but I was never told that and I do not have one.  Let me know what I should do next.

  • How to recover everything from wd time capsule to a new mac mini

    Hi
My mac mini just died on me.  The good thing is i backed everything up on a wd 2tb external hardrive.   I just purchased a new mac mini and when i recieve the new mac mini, what do i need to do in order to recover everything i had on the old mac mini from my external drive.  Any help would be appreciated.
    Eric

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
During the initial setup of your Mac mini, it will ask you to restore a backup. Connect the external drive, select the option to restore a backup from an external disk and follow the steps. You will be able to select what you want to restore. If you want more information > http://pondini.org/OSX/SetupLion.html

  • Is my mac mini dying?

I have a mac mini that I use at work. Among other things, I'm the bookkeeper for our little business so it's pretty essential that it continue to live and be happy. I've noticed this week that everything is running slower than is normal and the computer & applications are generally "odd". I've included screen shots of my mini to save some typing.
I am running VMware Fusion 3.1.3 with Windows XP SP3; QuickBooks Pro 2011 is installed in WinXP. For the most part, QB is the only application that I use on the XP side. As far as the mac world, I actively use QuarkXpress 9.3, Photoshop CS3, Adobe Acrobat Professional 8, and Microsoft Word & Excel. I try not to have all of them running at the same time. For some time, things had been running great. The transition between the Mac/Windows applications, while slow, was virtually problem-free. I took care to close any applications I wasn't using so as to help things run smoother. I occasionally run Onyx for maintenance on the mac side and I have Vipre installed on XP, as well as doing an occasional defrag.
I installed some plug-ins for CS3 last week. I haven't attempted to use many of them as of yet, but I tried a few. The problems started occurring about the same time. The transition between OSs and the recovery time (the time it takes for the application to work) is slower. If I stay in the Mac OS, the transition between applications is fairly smooth, but I've noticed that some of the applications themselves are having issues. I've had to reinstall QB (XP) and QXP (Mac). Acrobat (Mac) is having more issues than is normal; normally when I print multiple pages onto one page (duplexed), the 2nd side prints in reverse...I could read it in a mirror! Last night I attempted to print a PDF file, and although the printer started up, it seemed that the job was deleted from the printing cue and the printer stopped before printing. Today I accessed the file from the XP side, using Acrobat Reader, and printed the file.
Generally, applications open more slowly, initiate more slowly and transition more slowly. I'm praying that my mini, or some component inside of it, isn't dying.
Any ideas? Thanks so much in advance...I really appreciate your time!

    Thank you!
I've heard the 'shock and awe' from several people regarding the applications and the memory. I'm quite amazed myself; in fact, I never expected it to function as well as it had been!
Thank you all for the suggestions. I used the disk utility this morning to check the disk, it's the first of the suggestions that I've done thus far. Sure enough, there are issues. It's suggesting that I get a Mac OS X startup disk from which to boot and repair it. I'm assuming that will be the Snow Leopard one that we used with the last OS upgrade (yep, it's been a while). I'm trying frantically to track it down. If not, I'll have to contact Apple directly and find out what to do.
As for the external drive...been there, done that. Time Machine runs every day, but now I'm thinking I should've partitioned that disk with a little more space for the Mac. The bootable clone is a fabulous idea...thank you for that. I intend upon doing that (as soon as TM finishes it's current backup) while searching for a startup disk.
Thank you all again for your help! I'm hoping that I'm able to mark that you all helped me!

  • Since my G5 died I was thinking about getting a Mac Mini, but I have a ViewSonic Monitor (from 2004) and a USB keyboard and mouse - I also have the external drive tha downloaded my files on to. Do you think the monitor, keyboard and mouse will work on it?

Since my G5 died I was thinking about getting a Mac Mini, but I have a ViewSonic Monitor (from 2004) and a USB keyboard and mouse - I also have the external drive that I downloaded my files on to. Do you think the monitor, keyboard and mouse will work on it? Would I have to get a hub so I could use the stuff I already have? Is that viewsonic too old to work on it?
What else would I need? Please advise...

    Yes for keyboard and mouse.
The monitor will work if it has an HDMI, VGA ir DVI input. If it only has a VGA input you will need this adopter

  • Mac mini is running slowly

I've got a late 2006 mac mini which has begun to run extremely slowly. It has 2GB of RAM and is running OS X 10.6.6. I also have an external 500gb drive connected via USB (firewire 400 cable failed some time ago; haven't bothered to replace).
I've tried numerous things to address the issue and am now looking for suggestions. Here is what I have done so far:
    - Verified both disks and repaired disk permissions using Disk Utility
    - Used Applejack to clear all caches (including low level)
    - Tested the RAM using Applejack (uses Memtest)
    - The main drive has over 53GB of 80GB free
    - When I look at the activity monitor, the CPU is never even close to pegged
    - More than half the RAM is unused
Still when I run iTunes, songs will pause and resume mid-way through. The computer boots very slowly. Larger programs, like Firefox and iTunes load very slowly. There can be long waits in switching from one running program to another.
    Any suggestions?

Additionally, can somebody tell me where I can download the Apple Hardware Test (AHT), or images of the install disks that came with the computer? I cannot find the original disks.

Any recommendation on what to do with this Man Mini to make it after, besides changing the HHD to an SSD?

  • New Mac mini died

My brand new Mac mini arrived just a few days ago. Did the upgrade to 10.5.2 and everything was working fine. Tried to turn it on this morning and - nothing.
The machine wont power up; it just sits there. I tried all of the obvious things like checking the connections; the power supply, unplugging the keyboard and mouse, etc. But nothing has worked. It's as if the computer died.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be and/or what else I could try? While it's not a "disaster," I was still just exploring Leopard, it is going to be a major inconvenience to have to send it back to Mac Mall then wait for the fix.
    Thanks

That is 100% correct. I should pay more attention...I'm used to seeing people posting problems with their old minis not powering up! So, to clarify, for Intel minis, try this:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446
And from what I've seen on the thread, you already tried this. So, back to Apple Store you go.
I want to get a Mini for a headless server, but I'm waiting for an update. I think they are due.

  • Why is my mac mini running so slowly

My mac mini has been running great until yesterday when it started running very very slowly. Any program whether on the internet or on the mac mini i run takes 10 times as long to load , any keystroke i make is delayed in appearing on the screen.
I ran etrecheck which highlighted the system launch daemons. I am not sure what to do with this information or if this may even be the problem.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

If this started happening without your having made any changes and without a warning of low disk space, then it's likely that the startup drive, or some other hardware component, is failing. Back up all data immediately, then make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
