Mac Mini Voice Commands

Does anyone use the Mac Mini voice recognition capabilities? I'm thinking about picking up a usb mic and trying them out, but I don't want to waste my time if it's a really lame feature. Please let me know.
Also, I'm interested in what voice commands folks might actually be using on a regular basis. Can they do anything cool?
Thanks in advance.

Yes they work pretty good. At least last time I tried it in Tiger it was way better than the voice recognition in Windows.
Only reason I don't use it more is that I don't want to look crazy by talking to my computer too much LOL!
But if you have RSI or cannot type it's quite useful and worth checking out.

Mac mini server: Hardware test error on Hard Drive
'checking for slow read failures': ERROR - Target device access failure - Test failed.
CAN I ACCESS HD (which is our data server) EVER AGAIN? IF SO, HOW?
Meanwhile we wonder if this is really a hardware error. It all happened during writing a time machine backup.
Probably while writing it, some data was relocated by accident, but we can not 100%-sure remember the sequence of actions :/
    This is our trauma history:
    - time machine got increasingly slower in writing a backup
    - we quit the backup
    - we switched off the mac mini (on power button)
    - we switched on the mac mini
    - we stopped time machine to the rules
    - we shut down mac mini via command
    - we booted the mac mini in save mode
    - we see a loading bar
    - no progress after 10th of loading bar
    - switched off (power button)
    - when we now switch on the loading bar below the apple-logo is all we see + the little wheel
    - we started with cmd+alt+p+r pressed
    - mac mini restarted but showed the loading bar scenario without progress again
    - we started with 'd' pressed and did the hardware test (see above)
    - we started with 'alt' pressed but it does not give us the recoverydrive to run the last backup
    ANY IDEAS?
IS IT A SOFTWARE- OR HARDWARE ERROR?
    THX IN ADVANCE!

I'd get Temprature Monitor & see what temps they're running.
Is Temperature Monitor an app or a device?  If it's a temperature problem then that is essentially a design problem.  Two drive failures in the same Mac mini server in four months combined with the fact that they're not really user serviceable already has me 90% on the way back to more pragmatically designed Linux servers.  I think it would be foolish to waste any more money on these minis for my business hosting.

  • How do I use voice commands with CC on my Mac?

Howdy all! Just made the switch to Adobe from Final Cut 7. Overall, I'm digging it a bunch.
However, there's one aspect of CC on my Mac that's vexing me.
As you may know, there is speech recognition / voice command software built in to Mountain Lion (it's been around for years, and many iterations of OSX). With this software, you can make any number of custom voice commands for another piece of software. For instance, in FCP 7, I can program the keystroke "l" (play track) to respond to the voice command, "Forward." (It can be any word or phrase you type in.) This works with other programs as well.
All well and good, and pretty dang cool. However, I can't make any voice commands work with any of the CC software (I've tried Premiere and Media Encoder so far). I'm curious if anyone else has had any luck, or, perhaps, that the ported interface from Windows to Mac has some layer of code that (probably inadvertantly) blocks voice commands from working with CC on a Mac.
Anyone got any tips? Tricks? Confirmation that this simply won't work on a Mac? (If the last, I'd love to know the "why" as well.)
    Thanks!

  • How to record my voice by headphone on mac mini

    Hi all,
How to record my voice by headphone on mac mini. The headphone have a microphone. It can record on window 7, but on mac mini, it's not working.
I don't know why. Please help me.
    Thanks.

    Open Quicktime Player
    File Menu: New Audio Recording....
However... if the headphone/microphone combination has two 3.5mm jack plugs (pink and green) then the microphone output (pink) is "mic.level" - which is TOO QUIET for the audio input on a Mac, which is expecting the much stronger "line.level" signal strength.
Solutions: get a microphone pre-amplifier between the mic and the Mac (not cheap); or a different microphone with a USB interface.

  • Mac Mini Server auto commands

I use a mac mini server for FTP, the is put to sleep at night when i wake the server i need t

    sudo ipfw l

    sudo ipfw -q flush
i am looking for a solution to automate the entry of these commands on wakeup of the server
also i would like to be able to remotely wake up the server from my iphone or imac

any help on how to achieve this would be greatle appreciated

You could simply create a cron task such as those that perform the nightly, weekly, and monthly maintenance tasks.
You could search here, CNet Downloads or MacUpdate, for an existing utility that enables you to perform an action based on a system event such as, Do Something When.

  • Hi I installed a new hard drive in my Mac mini osx lion an when I turn it on I get a flashing file with a question mark. I tried holding command and R keys when turning it on but the recovery fails to work. Does any one know how I can get it to recover?

Hi I installed a new hard drive in my Mac mini osx lion an when I turn it on I get a flashing file with a question mark. I tried holding command and R keys when turning it on but the recovery fails to work. I can hold the option key at start up and choose my network, then Internet recovery shows up with an arrow pointing up. When I click on the arrow Internet recovery fails and all I get is a globe with a triangle on it with an exclamation mark on it, and under that it says
    apple.com/support
          -6002F
Does any one know how I can fix this without a recovery disc? Thanks

I just want to add to this, in case someone else searches for this error on Apple Support (google doesnt cover apple support.. how clever is that?)
I had the same error. And i had a Computer that had worked, with a SSD drive and 16GB upgrade done by the owner himself.
I tried swapping with a Mechinal Harddrive, no luck.
Kept the Mechanical drive in, and tried with some other Ram, it worked..
So for me this error and after reading the other responses can be boiled down to a Harddrive problem or Ram issue.
    It was Ram for me..

  • Bought a used Mac Mini and can't get past security password Seller refuses to answer emails. is there a keyboard command to take it back to factory settings or do I need to buy a Disc set and OS???

bought a used Mac Mini and can't get past security password Seller refuses to answer emails. is there a keyboard command to take it back to factory settings or do I need to buy a Disc set and OS???

You can bypass the password and wipe the drive and return to the original facory installation if the seller included the orginal install DVDs with the Mac mini. If not you will need a retail version of Mac OS X.  To boot from the Install DVD restart the mini, immediately slip in the DVD and press and hold the C key.

  • Does New Mac Mini Support Native Command Queing (NCQ) Hard Drives?

I have noticed the NCQ spec present in certain hard drives, like some Seagate drives. Does Apple support this in the 2009 Mac Mini?
Info available through Googling "Native Command Queing." Thanks.

    Hi,
In most cases, if NCQ is enabled with a direct connect RAID configuration (like the internal Mac Pro bays) it does not provide significant additional performance. With some hard disk models having NCQ turned on will actually provide slower overall performance. You can see this when testing the HighPoint and Areca RAID controllers in the Mac Pro as they allow the user to turn NCQ off or on.
If you read the NCQ spec, it ibdicates performance will be significantly higher with NCQ enabled. I have grown to believe that most of this is in theory, as in real use NCQ usually provides overall negative performance results with a direct connect RAID set.
The one configuration that enabling NCQ provides a slight overall performance increase is with port multiplier (PM) enclosures.
While the Apple Mac Pro will support a hard disk with NCQ turned on. I have found hard disks with NCQ enabled will not provide measurably higher performance results than if the HD has NCQ turned off while mounted in the Apple Mac Pro.
    Have fun!

  • Mac Mini - USB/RS232 Cable - help to command display

Could anyone help out with advice in a project where we would like to put a monitor in different modes from a Mac Mini.
The interface for the commands to the display is a RS232 serial port. As Mac Mini has no RS232 port but there are USB to RS232 cables on the market our question is if one could use apple script or shell script to make the job?
    Would really appreciate any advice!

this has absolutely nothing to do with scripting. you need a USB to serial adapter.

  • Mac Mini Boots to Unix command line

I've used my Mac Mini for almost two years with no problem. Normally I can figure out what I've done wrong...but not this time. I need some help from the OS X community.
This morning when I toggled to my Mac Mini from Windows (via a KVM switch - not dual booting) I had my OS X login screen with my username and one other username (Guest, I think). It wouldn't accept my password for my account, and I've never had a "Guest" (or whatever the other name was). In addition three other user accounts were missing (my wife, daughter, and one other). All I knew to do was restart (by turning off the Mac and turning it back on because it wouldn't accept my password).
When it booted up I had a black screen with the following two lines:
    -sh: /etc/profile: is a directory
    -sh-2.05b#
The only unusual thing I can think of is that last night I downloaded and installed a 'free' version of DivX (from their web site). I've never had a problem like this before.
Suggestions? I'm already having withdrawal symptoms from my Mac. Thanks in advance...
    Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1.42GHz/1GB/80G HD/SD/Bluetooth +AP/56K MDM

Then, I suspect that the profile file is corrupt. Boot with the install disk, select your language, and, when the menu bar pops up, select Utilities->Terminal. When the Terminal window pops up, type in the following command, and hit the return key:
    cat /Volumes/"name of HD"/etc/profile
The result should look like this:
    # System-wide .profile for sh(1)
    PATH="/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin"
    export PATH
    if [ "${BASH-no}" != "no" ]; then
    [ -r /etc/bashrc ] && . /etc/bashrc
    fi
If it isn't, then my only suggestion is to reinstall the OS, using the Archive & Install option, saving user and network settings.

  • My Mac mini won't respond to startup commands

Hi, first of all I'd like to say that I tried to find a solution not only in this forum but all over google could offer me and still no success in finding a solution to this problem I'm having, so you guys are my last hope before taking my computer to maintenance.
Well, the thing is, I have a Mac mini Intel Core Duo 1.66GHz that, while trying to install Windows XP through bootcamp I accidentally deleted the Mac OS X disk partition, no harm there as I have a time machine backup, but now I'm trying to boot my OS X 10.6 disk to reinstall the OS but only Windows XP is starting up. I tried to startup with the keys option pressed but no menu to select the source it should boot. I also tried start it up with C pressed, I could hear the DVD spinning and the laser doing its job but only Windows XP boot up.
During my journey trying to make my OS X disk to boot, I realize that almost no startup command was working as its suppose to be, I tried to ZAP PRAM using CMDOPT+PR but no double chime, tried then CMDOPT+NV to clear NV RAM and nothing. My keyboard is the original Apple aluminum wired keyboard that came with my iMac and it's working perfectly.
I also tried to reset PMU, SMC and still no success.

Found out what's going on on this very same forum, during my research I actually wasn't using the right words on the search box to find what I need, but who'd know that the official Apple keyboard was the source of the problem, anyway for those who came here with the same problem as mine, turns out that my iMac Aluminum Keyboard isn't "compatible" with startup commands although it works for pretty much everything else, I just used an old PC USB keyboard to give the boot options using Alt as the Option key and Windows Logo as Command key.
    And that's it!

  • Mac mini shutting down with screen(s) running commands/code?

My mac mini started shutting down while in use. It then runs commands or code very quickly over screen after screen. Have to restart. Keeps happening. Can you help?

    Hi and welcome.
Could you give us a bit more history about your Mini and what lead or leads up to this?
Do you have a G4 Mini (2 usb ports), CoreDuo/Core2Duo Intel Mini (4 usb ports), or a 2009 Intel Mini (5 usb ports)?
What version of OSX are you running? (Apple Menu > About this Mac)

  • Can I change my default boot order to netboot from the mac mini command line?

I'd like to change my boot order on the mac mini to netboot first.  I need to do this from the command line so that I can automate this change to a bunch of mac minis.  Is there a way to do this?  The only way I have found to netboot is through pressing command N.  Thanks
