Mac OSX File/Path equivalence testing

Dear Java Guru's,
I've been wracking my brain on this for a few days, and I'm sure there has to be a simple solution to this problem:
In my Java Mac application, I've got two paths to deal with - "/Volumes/Macintosh HD/Users" and "/Users". Now, I know these both point to the same folder but, is there any way to compare these two paths and determine their equivalence from my Java SE 1.6 application?
Many Thanks,
- Zep

Thanks for the response baftos, you are absolutely right and that is exactly what I needed.
File.getCanonicalFile in the example above will return "/Users" for both which solves my problem.
Thanks,
Zep

  • Mac OSX file copy to Windows Share folder permissions

We'd got a few Mac's, one is snow leopard and the other is Lion.  The scenario is:
    Mac:
Go > Connect to server > smb://servernamehere > Connect > select your share
The authentication box then pops up, they've been typing in a username and password to connect to Server 2008 (Active Directory here by the way).  I don't think it matters if they type in "DOMAIN\username" and the password or just "username" and the password.
They try to copy files around but they get this wacky -xx number and their Macs lock up.
On the Windows Server Side I look at the folder permissions and the users they're using are all golden, full permissions.  I look at a test folder I create and it too looks good.
    The weird thing is this:
If I look at the folders on Windows it looks normal but if I open the command line on a Mac, do:
    cd /
    cd Volumes
    ls
    cd Folder_I'm_Connected_To
    ls -la | grep testfolder_I_made
    I get these results...
drwx------ 1 Their_Username_Here  staff  --> Some other stuff here like a folder size, date, time and the folder name
My question is this I guess.
Do I have to join these Macs to the Windows domain for the permissions and folder views on the Mac to look right AND to have them funtion properly?  The user of the other Mac says she never types in any authentication stuff, she just clicks a folder shortcut on her Mac ans she's in.
I would expect the permissions to at least say something like:
    drwxdrwx---
The Windows server doesn't have the group "staff" which makes it seem the Mac isn't looking at the mounted volume in the same way Windows is.  They also had this problem on AFP and SMB shares directly on a FreeNAS box which is also BSD like a Mac.
As a result of the Macs behaving similarly on both Windows and BSD (FreeNAS) I think this seems to be some wacky Mac behavior and I just can't figure it out.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

Hi, same results at the terminal command on a SMB share, observed here with mac computers running with OsX 10.8 with Windows 2008 R2 SMB shares. My issue is that theses computers need to copy files on theses shares with Chronosync or Carbon Copy and this is not working due to an "modify file attributes permissions" error. But if I copy the files using "Finder" it works great.
You don't need to join your computers to your domain to get it to work. The error that you are talking about is the -5000 error ???

  • Using Terminal in Mac OSX to program and test java

I bought a book on java and it says I should not use a JDK like Net Beans when first learning java.
Right or wrong I would like to know how to use terminal to program and compile simple scripts.
    So my question is:
How do you go about setting up the computer to use terminal to write and compile a java program? I know my Mac sees java in terminal because tells me Im running "version 1.5.0_07"
I just need a link to some info on how to get started using Terminal for my command line with java.
I think if I could get a path set up from the command line to my text file and have javac see it I would be in pretty good shape. At least for now.
If I use a text saved plain text file (.java) how do I set up a path to it using javac from the command line?
Where can I find or link to this kind of info?
Macbook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.10)

    Hi,
seems like you have not tried out a few things.
    1. Set up the JAVA_HOME environment variable. (I assume you pretty much know it) the folder where java is installed.
    2. set up the environment variable to point to the bin folder inside the java installation folder.
    3. open up a console (it seems from your post you know it.), type java -version see the java version.
    4. type in javac, press enter: you should get the javac options.
    5. type in java, you should see the java options.
Write your programs in a text editor, save it as somename.java.
open a console, change to the directory containing the java file.
    type: javac somename.java <PRESS ENTER>
you should get the compilation errors if any.
    if not
    type in: java somename.java
    Hope this helps.
    Regards,
AyusmanStep 1 and 2 are generally not needed. Mac OS X comes with Java configured up and running right out of the box.

  • Mac OSX file format questions

I am using Quicken 2005 and these days I backup my accounts to my USB flash drive. In the past i backed up to zip disk or floppy. backing up to a floppy would be problematic since the Mac version has never supported multiple disk backup which the PC version even to this day still supports. And besides floppy disk access has always been slower and more problematic on the Mac for some reason.
    Okay here is my question.
My quicken files end with a Backup-file.qdfm extension.
But whenever I upload these files (sadly they have to be dragged an dropped with Fetch) they appear as a folder on my FTP server. So I have been using the classic version of Transmit instead of the native OSX version of Fetch to upload my Quicken backup accounts.
My question if I ever had a major disaster (this has happened before) would the folder (what it appears to be) on my FTP server save me or should I be zipping this quicken file before I upload? I have been using Quicken since 1998 for the Mac and PC, and have thousands of bank transactions that are valuable and that I do not want to lose.
Encase you cannot understand what I mean here is a screen shot. The file above is the Quicken 2006 file, and the one below is a older Quicken 2001 file that I uploaded when I had my Performa.
    http://johnw.freeshell.org/voicemails/screenshot.png
    Thank you,
    John

One way to know for sure would be to download the file (folder) and open it in Quicken. Of course I would make and keep a backup on your local drive before doing this.
Like you I have been using Quicken for many years but I back mine up to another hard drive, then I back everything on it up on a regular basis to a CD. I also use .Mac and the backup program included with it to back up my Quicken files off site. The .Mac solution is automatic, and takes place daily which is nice.
"But whenever I upload these files (sadly they have to be dragged an dropped with Fetch)'
Do you want to automate the process? If so, that is what Automator and Applescript are for. Surely you could write a simple script to do it for you.

I have an iMac 5.1 with Mac OSX 10.6.8 and 2 GB memory and an L2 cache of 4 GB.   lately I have been receiving error messages of " start up disk almost full; please delete files." is the start up disk the same thing as the hard drive?  I opened the hard drive and from the column on the left of the menu I've selected "search for" and under that " all images" then "all documents"  I've deleted a few files from each. Are documents and images that I have deleted from here also deleted from the folders on my desktop?

You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Delete any other mail in your Junk folders. Also, look through your Sent Mail to see if there is anything that can be deleted.
Other things you can do to gain space.
Once you have around 15 GBs regained, do a search, download and install OmniDisk Sweeper.
This app will help you locate files that you can move/archive and/or delete from your system.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

  • Apple/Mac Appending to File path?

I have the following javascript script runnning in InDesign:
    if (File.fs == "Windows") {
    var defaultPath = new File('\\\\server\\path\\to\\file');
    } else {
    var defaultPath = new File('smb://server/path/to/file');
The code works fine in Windows (the file is on a Windows shared directory), but on a Mac I get a "cannot find folder" error and claims the defaultPath variable is:
    /Applications/Adobe InDesign CS5/scripts/XHTML For Digital Editions/smb:/server/path/to/file
I am confused about 2 things:
Why is it appending "/Applications/Adobe InDesign CS5/scripts/XHTML For Digital Editions/" to the path?
Why is it changing smb:// to smb:/ (one forward-slash) ?
Am I using the wrong path for Mac? Is there supposed to be something else before smb:// to identify that it is not a local path?

    John,
As I stated in my first reply, using /Volumes/ did not work
I am not sure the path specified is mounted on the system. Is that required and how do you get the mount name? Is it possible to access the path without it being mounted?
    I was also looking here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2799
    Will /Network/Servers etc work?
I am not a Mac user so I don't know much about Mac's filesystem or the file paths used. On the test machine I have used just typing in smb://server/path/to/file works in the Finder (Windows Explorer equivalent) but does not work in the code.

  • "Your Mac OSX startup disk has no more space available for application memory" - uploading files problem

    Hi everyone,
    I'm running a late-2012 27 inch iMac - 3.4GHz Intel Core i7, 32GB 1600 MHz DDR3 with the 3TB fusion drive, OS 10.8.4. At present there is 1.92TB of available storage.
I have received this message "Your Mac OSX startup disk has no more space available for application memory" just before a full on crash multiple times in the past couple of days whilst using WeTransfer to send over some large files (500MB+). The applications I have had open at the time have been: Activity Monitor, App Store, Firefox, and Finder. Over the course of uploading the files, the active system memory has gone from 1.04GB and steadily increased until it more or less maxes out around 29GB, at which point the Page Outs rocket up to around 40GB/s and the swap memory fills up pretty quickly until the computer basically can't take any more and blacks out.
This is a pretty new thing, haven't really had an issues before. My main software used: Sibelius 7 & Logic Pro X. I've also recently started working with Final Cut Pro X, which seems to have been struggling at points. I've tried closing everything, restarting the computer and not opening anything (specifically NOT FCPX) before attempting an upload. I've even gone so far as to remove FCPX from my system, and yet the problem is still recurring. Both "kernal_task" and "WindowServer" have been running high on CPU when these problems have occurred.
Does anyone know what might be the issue and how it could possibly be resolved?
Really appreciate any help, I'm in the middle of a fairly sizeable project and the deadlines are just around the corner.
    Thanks,
    Tom

There is excessive swapping of data between physical memory and virtual memory. That can happen for two reasons:
You have a long-running process with a memory leak (i.e., a bug), or
You don't have enough memory installed for your usage pattern.
Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.
When you notice the swap activity, open the Activity Monitor application and select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select
View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory
    from the menu bar.
If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.
The process named "Safari Web Content" renders web pages for Safari and other applications. It uses a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider it a prime suspect.
If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.
The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:
sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details.

Before re-installing, try trashing the prefs and re-launching. Start by quitting PSE11.
Launch Finder and click the Go menu whilst holding down the Option (alt) key. Then go to Library >> Preferences and clear everything relating to PSE11 which usually means deleting the following files:
    com.adobe.PhotoshopElements.plist
    Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 Paths
    Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 Settings
If trashing the prefs makes no difference you can download a replacement for PSE11 at the link below.

  • File dialog crashes LabVIEW 2014 on Mac OSX Yosemite

I know that Mac OS 10.10 (Yosemite) is not technically supported by LabVIEW 2014. If that's the only answer to this question, then so be it.
The following causes LabVIEW 2014 to crash on Mac OSX 10.10 (Yosemite):
    1. Run the native File Dialog in LabVIEW 2014 (Express VI) , using "New or Existing File" as the selection mode
    2. Select "New File..." when the file dialog appears
    3. Enter anything as the file name and click OK
    4. LabVIEW either crashes immediately, or hangs indefinitely and must be force quit.
Is there an update for LV 2014 (and the RTE) that does support Yosemite?
This bug makes deploying apps to the Mac basically impossible, Yosemite is the latest OS. Does anyone have a workaround for the issue?
    Thanks.

LabVIEW 2014 SP1 seems to solve that problem here on my Mac OSX 10.10 system.
Now Apple may be nice for end users, but all those Apple fan boys sure would think a little different about it, if they had to write programs on the Mac. Apple keeps changing its APIs and their behaviour continously, inventing new APIs (which is fine) in a rapid pace, only to depreciate and remove older APIs at almost the same speeed!
Microsoft sometimes goes to the other extreme with maintaining backwards compatibility but working with Apple systems surely isn't easy as a programmer (unless maybe when one uses their high level click and point together web design applications, but I don't know that).

  • Mac OSX desktop dropping connection with multiple copy processes & large files

The servers are 6.5 SP3 running NFAP, the MAC OSX is 10.4.2 updated. The
volume the macs are using is part of a cluster. The users mount the volumes
on their macs and everying is for the most part fine. If they grab a bunch
of files and copy them from desktop to server it's fine as long as it's only
a single copy process. The users are part of the hi-res department and the
files can be 1GB or larger. If they drag one or more large files, and then
while that's copying they drag some more files, so both copy processes are
running at once....quite often the volume will dismount from the desktop and
you will get unable to copy because some resource is unavailable. Sometimes
the finder crashes, sometimes not. Often the files that were partially
copied get locked and the users needs to reboot their Mac in order to delete
them. I'm getting pretty desperate hear, anyone have an idea what's going
on. I don't know if this is a Tiger thing or a large file thing or a
multiple copy stream thing, a netware thing or a mac thing.....we have
hundreds of other users running OSX 10.3 and earlier who are not reporting
this problem, but they also don't copy files that size. Someone please tell
me they have seen this before....thanks very much. Oh, before going to 6.5
and NFAP the servers were 5.1 with Prosoft server and they never had the
    problem.
    Jake

Thanks for your help, I have incidents open now with Apple and Novell, I
hope one of them can provide something for us. We tried applying 6.5 SP4 to
a test server....the problem still happened but was "better", the copy
operations still quit but with SP4 applied the volume did not dismount....or
if it did it remounted automatically because it was still connected after
    OKing through the copy errors.

  • How to make a image file from Pre installed Mac osx ? "PLEASE HELP :("?

hey guys ..Thanks u for the time.
So i have this eMac which has crashed and i have got may hands on another eMac.. and it works
... the only problem is.. I can take my eMac to the working eMac to do Target Mode or any thing...
    So Help me..
My question is .. Is there a way to make a .DMG image file from pre installed mac osx OR
Is there a way to may a recovery disc??

You can use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy everything from the working eMac onto the non-working eMac while the working eMac is running. If your eMac will still do target mode into the working one, you can download the above software, select the booted drive as the source drive, and your eMac's drive as the target, however it is possible this will not work.
When you say your eMac crashed, what exactly happened?  It is possible that the hard drive in your eMac failed or is failing, so in order to get it running again you would need to replace the hard drive.  On the eMac, this repair is somewhat involved, and you have to be very careful because it exposes the CRT, which has several areas which can be extremely dangerous to touch if not properly handled.  CRTs retain a great deal of voltage, even when unplugged, sometimes for weeks, and they can give you a nasty shock if you touch them in the wrong place.
Also keep in mind that cloning from the working computer to the non-working computer will ERASE any data that you have stored on that eMac, so if you don't have it backed up anywhere, you may want to attempt that with target mode before proceeding.
    Good luck!

  • I am running Mac OSx Lion 10.7.2. My problem is I can't search on an external network server for a file with the finder toolbar anymore. Nothing shows up and it will not search. I was able to in snow-leopard and am no longer able to w. Lion. Suggestions?

I am running Mac OSx Lion 10.7.2.
My issue is that I am not able to run a search in the finder toolabar on a network server. No files show up nor does it search on the server anymore. I was able to run the search in snow-leopard and am no longer able to do so with Lion. Is there a preference I can change or some kind of app or program I can download that will help me with this issue? This is extremely problematic for me as I am searching for files all day everyday. Thank you!

    Hello,
It isn't the fw in Network you want o use or look at, that's for something completely different.
My first suspect is the Power Adapter on the LaCie has gone.
At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac, then click on More Info, then click on Hardware>Firewire, what is listed there?
    Reset the Firewire bus
If your Firewire or USB isn't recognizing any device.  A solution which has worked for some whose hard drive became invisible in 10.4 was simply to follow these four steps to reset the Firewire/USB bus:
    1. Shut the machine down.
    2. UNPLUG the power lead to the computer and any firewire/USB drive or devices.
    3. leave it for 10 minutes.
    4. Connect back up and reboot.

  • Sharing files between a Windows Vista Business edition and a Mac osx 10.6.6

Is there reliable information somewhere about how to share files from a Windows Vista business edition pc to a Mac osx 10.6.6?  I have googled instructions and followed the steps and still could not have sharing to happen between the Vista pc and the Mac.  These are the steps I have performed, I have made sure that
o Both the Vista pc and the Mac have the same user account/password.
o The firewall from the Vista side allows file and printer sharing in the exceptions.
o Enabled sharing with a few directories on the Vista pc.
o Changed the security policy on the Vista pc to "LM and NTLM - use NTLMV2 session security if negotiated".
o On the Mac System Preferences > Sharing selected File sharing.
On the Windows Vista pc, if I click the Start menu and then Network, the Mac does not appear.  On the Mac, from the Finder menu if I click Go > Connect to server and request a connection to the IP address of that Vista pc, I get an error, "Connection Failed"  (could not find pc or not available at this time).
    What else do I need?

That was a great tutorial / walk through.
In fact, I would say that was far easier than the entrophy route (which is good) as you can see exactly what you are doing rather than relying on an installer which has often failed in the past for me, and then just suddenly worked for no apparent reason!
Just two things to improve it for other users, and they are really VERY minor... From previous experience, I knew where to find the php.ini.default file, but you don't let people know where to find that, and the links to the MySQL downloads were broken. I guess that is because the file names have changed or because I am coming at it from a different country. I got a message stating: 'That file does not exist on our download mirrors.'
Thanks for doing that, I really appreciate you (and the likes of David Powers) taking the time to set these tutorials up for others to use.
