Mac OSX Systems upgrade

I have an iMac with OSX 10.5.9. Purchased some software that requires a minimum of OSX 10.6.8. How do I upgrade? Can I download OSX Mountain?

Upgrading to Snow Leopard, Lion, or Mountain Lion
Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will receive physical media - DVD - by mail.
Third-party sources for Snow Leopard are:
Snow Leopard from Amazon.com
Snow Leopard from eBay
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.
Before upgrading check that you computer meets the minimum requirements:
Snow Leopard General requirements
  1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
  2. 1GB of memory
  3. 5GB of available disk space
  4. DVD drive for installation
  5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may
      apply.
  6. Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Upgrading to Lion
First, you need to upgrade to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 as stated above.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
Before upgrading check that you computer meets the minimum requirements:
Lion System Requirements
  1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or
      Xeon processor
  2. 2GB of memory
  3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
  4. 7GB of available space
  5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Upgrading to Mountain Lion
Be sure your computer meets the minimum requirements:
Apple - OS X Mountain Lion - Read the technical specifications.
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
  1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
  2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
  3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
  4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
  5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
  6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
  7. Xserve (Early 2009)
Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps - App compatibility and feature support for OS X & iOS.
Am I eligible for the free upgrade?
See Apple - Free OS X Mountain Lion upgrade Program.

after 10.5.4 update (some minutes ago) i can't go on https web pages with browser safari and the other applications that uses the system proxy client (for example google notifier). i'm connecting to internet trough my macbook pro cable lan adapter into a LAN with a proxy server (before the update the mac osx system proxy client does work right).

    Hello Robert:
I am sorry to be simplistic, but Apple cannot possibly be responsible for Safari (or any other software product) working in every possible environment. In my business life I used several methods to seamlessly link with my corporate servers from home or on the road. In each case, it was possible, but not without the help of my excellent IT people.

  • Reinstall Mac OSX after upgrading to version OSX 23.1.1.

Re-instate password. Redo everything. Harddrive says: "You can't use this version of application install Mac OS X with this version of Mac OS X."

There is no such thing as OS X 23.1.1
    What did you actually install?

  • How do I restore my Mac operating system after a botched uninstall of Bootcamp.

I completely botched up uninstall of Bootcamp.I wanted to uninstall and delete Windows 7 and re-do the operation. Bootcamp did not manage an uninstall and I got put back into a Widows install operation.Which won't re-install because it can't fiind a suitable hard disk. I have 4 sata harddrives installed, one contains the Mac OSX system files, one a Timemachine backup and one the Windows system.Other is data.
I have a boot USB. None of the startup keys (Press C during startup,Shift key, Cmd R ete) will respond. The machine just behaves like it has a windows BIOS and won't allow any way to see any of the Mac files.Nor will it accept any HD to try a reload of windows. I've tried replacing the data drive with a spare formatted for NTFS, but the Windows setup file won't proceed far enough to enable this to be tried. Any help. I just want to get back to running OSX again.

Have you tried press and holding the option/alt key while starting up so as to get the startup manager screen. I think you have too many drives attached for Boot Camp to install. Are these on the MacBook Pro you have listed?

  • Mac OSX update killed MySQL

On a G5 Mac OSX 10.4.7, build 8J135 dual 2GHz Power PC with MySQL versions; mysql-standard-4.1.18-apple-darwin8.2.0-powerpc-64bit
    mysql-standard-5.0.24-osx10.4-powerpc-64bit
    The first one (4.1.18) has been running for some months and working fine with open office org to generate merge mail. I seem to recall did a Mac OSX system update from apple between the last time I used it. When I tried to use MySQL for first time in a week got "segmentation error" on login to MySQL. Discovered the daemon was not running. It wouldn't start. Tried to install the new version to see if that would help with new OSX updates. Nope, it won't start either. When I run the new version as test this is what i get;

Anyone have any clues as to what I should try next? Thanks.

I don't know the first word about MySQL, but when porting
my own program to 64-bits I kept getting 'Illegal Instruction' faults.
Does MySQL install its own signal handlers using 'sigaction'?
If so (and this was the problem with my proogram), I found
the following note useful. That problem went away after
I added the SA_64REGSET flag in the call to sigaction.
This is obviously a work-around as sigaction should operate
properly when called from 64-bit programs, but be that
    as it may...

  • My Mac OSX 10.4.3 is a bit sluggish now...

My Mac OSX 10.4.3 is running a bit sluggish now that I have had it for a few months. I am wondering what diagnostics/tweaking programs I can run through my Mac OSX System disc that will may help improve performance.
I am not sure what specifically is going on. I just notice that sometimes it takes awhile switching between programs and running other software. A few months ago it was 100% better.

As a voice of actual experience,
80GB internal with about ~409MB free
200GB external with about ~278MB free
    OS X 10.4.3
No slow downs, no crashes, no issues (slow, sluggish, spinning beach balls, etc.)
Best clients I have found for best use of system resources (native/compiled OS X apps) are:
    Transmission http://transmission.m0k.org/
    and second best is
    Bits On Wheels http://www.bitsonwheels.com/
Now as far as your slow downs, look towards any software or hardware (and hence software drivers) that you may have installed recently that coincide with the slow down symptoms appearing.
If it's just the 10.4 os (has a habit of it on some machines) deciding to give you issues, using AppleJack (booting into Single User mode after installing and using the command applejack AUTO restart [note the capitals] is sufficient enough to arm wrestle Tiger into behaving again). If however, it is being caused by an errant installed application or hardware driver you will notice the symptoms will reappear in which case you need to take the time to inventory what you have installed and remove them temporarily one at a time and test if the symptoms disappear.
    AppleJack http://applejack.sourceforge.net/
There are other utilities you can try running while you are booted normally into OS X but they will perform the same tasks and not be able to do as much as when OS X is running a lot of files and caches are locked away from being able to be touched by the system hence they are less effective.
Give it a go, if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

  • Mac OSX 10.6, Apache and PHP and Marc Liyanage

I am just about to get PHP up and running (hopefully) on my Mac where I have just installed 10.6, and I was about to use David Powers recommended route of Marc Liyanage's Entrophy PHP, but I read there that a number of people are having trouble with getting Marcs normally excellent installation up and running on 10.6.
Has anybody here used the Entrophy download on 10.6 and managed to get it working?
I also found this link from David Powers... http://foundationphp.com/tutorials/php_leopard.php
It seems straight forward, and I think I prefer to go this route if nobody has managed to get the entrophy download to work. However, does this step-by-step guide still apply to 10.6?
I know how to switch the apache server on by activating web sharing, but in 10.6, is the pre installed PHP still disabled by default?
I am asking this BEFORE I go ahead and try it for myself, as in the past I have managed to totally ruin a perfectly good Mac OSX system, and it caused me all sorts of headaches and pains.
    Any advice is appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Mat

That was a great tutorial / walk through.
In fact, I would say that was far easier than the entrophy route (which is good) as you can see exactly what you are doing rather than relying on an installer which has often failed in the past for me, and then just suddenly worked for no apparent reason!
Just two things to improve it for other users, and they are really VERY minor... From previous experience, I knew where to find the php.ini.default file, but you don't let people know where to find that, and the links to the MySQL downloads were broken. I guess that is because the file names have changed or because I am coming at it from a different country. I got a message stating: 'That file does not exist on our download mirrors.'
Thanks for doing that, I really appreciate you (and the likes of David Powers) taking the time to set these tutorials up for others to use.

  • Forms9i from Mac OSX

    Hello,
Is anyone has an experience with runing Forms9i on a Mac OSX system ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Francois.

I've been able to get test 10g/10gAS webforms to run on Mac OS X (Safari, IR, and Netscape 7.2) using the following configs from the FORMSWEB.CFG file.
As always, this is an unsupported configuration (though Oracle has been promising certification for close to two years now). Your mileage may vary.

My computer had a system failure so I am trying to reinstall the MAC OSX system and start over. When i get to the "select a destination" part of the install, there is no destination to select. my computer also doesnt sound good. like the fan is out of wack or the disk that is spinning is not spinning right. Please give me some advice to try at home before i have to take it into a mac store!!!

Hi Lindsey, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Did you run "Apple Hardware Test"?
If CD's came with your computer it is on a CD labeled "Hardware Test" To test with CD, insert the CD and restart holding the "c" key until you see the spinning gear.
    If DVD insert DVD then:
    1. Turn on or restart the computer.
    2. Immediately press and hold the Option key. After a few seconds, the Startup Manger screen appearsThe Startup Manager scans for available volumes.
    3. Optional: Clicking the circular arrow rescans for other volumes, including NetBoot Server volumes. You can eject any disc in the drive or open an empty tray-loading drive by holding down the Command (Apple) and Period (.) keys. The Command-Period key combination will also close the drive. After inserting a CD capable of starting up your computer, you could rescan for volumes.
    4. Click the startup volume you want to use. "Hardware Test"
If hardware test does not mount or does not run bring the computer to Authorized Apple Repair.
    Good luck, let us know.
btw - System 10.0? That is really beta and troublesome. If I were re-installing I wouldn't do it with 10.0. You can pick up some 10.3 install disks reasonably inexpensively and have a MUCH more stable system.

  • How can I get all photos from iPhoto to automatically back up to iCloud from my Mac OSX Version 10.6.8 operating system.  Not enough memory to upgrade.

How can I get all photos from iPhoto to automatically back up to iCloud from my Mac OSX Version 10.6.8 operating system.  Not enough memory to upgrade.

You can't.  iCloud is not for general file backup from a Mac. It's for backup up and syncing data between mobile devices and and Macs and  The following is from this Apple document: iCloud: Backup and restore overview.
iCloud automatically backs up the most important data on your (mobile) device using iOS 5 or later. Once you have enabled Backup on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch .....
    What is backed up
You get unlimited free storage for:
Purchased music, movies, TV shows, apps, and books
Notes: Backup of purchased music is not available in all countries. Backups of purchased movies and TV shows are U.S. only. Previous purchases may not be restored if they are no longer in the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBookstore.
Some previously purchased movies may not be available in iTunes in the Cloud. These movies will indicate that they are not available in iTunes in the Cloud on their product details page in the iTunes Store. Previous purchases may be unavailable if they have been refunded or are no longer available in the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBookstore.
You get 5 GB of free iCloud storage for:
Photos and videos in the Camera Roll
Device settings (for example: Phone Favorites, Wallpaper, and Mail, Contacts, Calendar accounts)
    App data
    Home screen and app organization
    Messages (iMessage, SMS, and MMS)
    Ringtones
    Visual Voicemails
But not from a Mac.  If you want to backup your photos and other important files I suggest you get an external hard drive and use  it with Time Machine.

The apple store is so unhelpful. I have an iMac computer operating on Mac OSX 10.5.8. I want to upgrade to the latest Mountain Lion operating system so I can work with the iCloud on my computer and download my emails. I can't seem to purchase this on-line as it keeps telling me to go to the app store. I haven't got the app store on my computer as I am told I need iCloud for which I need the new operating system, which I can't download or purchase as I am sent back to an instruction telling mee to go to the app store icon.
How difficult can it be to simply purchase the software on-line have it shipped to you so you can install it, in the event it cannot be downloaded as it appears it can't be based on my curent operating systems being Mac OSX 10.5.8.

Whilst Apple have withdrawn Snow Leopard from download, you can still get it from Apple by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE (if you are in the USA) and they will supply the SL DVD for $30.  You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion from the same number.
