Mac pro 1.1 2006 universal black  power lead uk

Hi as i am new to Mac could using the wrong power cable cause the mac pro to go into power safe mode ?
i get a message on my screen saying DIGITAL INPUT IN POWER SAVE MODE,PRESS COMPUTER POWER BUTTON AND ANY KEY ON KEYBOARD OR MOVE MOUSE
TRIED IT BUT NOTHING HAPPINS

So many times we get to the hardware details needed after some Q & A back and forth....
Any PC graphic card will work if you get Windows to install, which is harder on a 1,1 Mac Pro 2006.
The 8800GT may not be powerful but powerful and Mac Pro would require a 2009 or later, improved PCIe 2.1+
Up until a month ago the safe route was Apple's own 5770 - AMD card that worked in all Mac Pro models if they have 10.6.5 or later.
your last post sounds like you quoted but no acknowledgement where, sounds like ebay's MacVidCards is a good reliable source of cards, mostly Nvidia. Use to have 1GB 8800GTX too.
There are forums that get into flashing and 3rd party PC card support.

The search for a card for a 1,1 though is slim pickings.

He's asking what are those things you are using, i.e., ...
What video card are you using?
What version of OSX are you using?
What model of mac pro are you using (e.g., 2010 Mac Pro is 5,1).
    And also,
    Try smc and pram reset.
And see if the monitor lites up if you boot in safe mode.
It is possible your monitor simply failed -- its power supply or something else.

  • What is a recommended internal hard drive for a Mac Pro 1,1 (2006)?

What is a recommended internal hard drive for a Mac Pro 1,1 (2006) model? I would like to
add more hard drive space by utilizing the three available slots. However, from my understanding,
Apple does not produce hard drives for my older computer so I'll need to turn to a third party.

You are very much over-due for some new larger more efficient drives.
the most common best approach goes something like this....
    SSD 120GB for system
WD Black 1-2TB for data (and  put all your data and media files, all your home account sub-folders)
Backup. I use WD Green but use what you want. I have a small boot volume, TimeMachine, and 3rd that is a clone image of the boot drive volume.
Very fond of WD 10K VelociRaptor drives. Not much louder now than the WD Black 2TB, $100-200 for 250GB to 1TB.
You can use any size SATA 3.5" drive, most now are 1TB and up to 4TB.
You should have always bought Amazon or Newegg or outside of Apple, Apple can often charge 3x what those places charge.
Probably want to add or replace FBDIMMs you have, these are excellent and price in the last year has fallen.

Your OEM 7300GT isn't helping now and with Lion or the X1900 dust magnet and out of date too. If you have a functional 8800GT still working you are lucky and no need.

  • Which graphics cards are Mac Pro 1,1 (2006) compatible?

I suspect my graphics card is bad (though I could be wrong).  At boot I hear the Apple sound but get no visuals whatsoever.  No grey or blue or any other kind of screen.  I tried resetting PRAM, holding shift, holding option, nothing works.  The computer is stuck at the phase where the graphics card fan is on overdrive and it does not ever stop spinning.  The card is an ATI Radeon that came stock with the Mac.
I found this article which shows which cards are compatible.
MY QUESTION: Are these the ONLY graphics cards my Mac Pro will support?  Or can I install any PCI-E graphics card?

Not to be difficult but you do realize this is being asked and discussed today in multiple threads, and for the last... 23 months too.

  • Mac Pro 2.66 (2006) CPU Temps

It's been a while since I took a look at the my temps and what not using Hardware Monitor but the other day I reached behind my Mac Pro... it seemed to me that it was awfully warm... so it peeked my curiosity...
Today I checked and my CPU temps are all around 135F... as I said, it's been a while since I looked but I seem to remember them being sub-100F at idle...
    Am I not remembering correctly?
    Thoughts?
    Thanks!

See if installing SmcFanControl 2.2+ to create profiles and change default fan speed works, changes the fans.
Rather than wait for the system to heat up, switch to a higher rpm profile for that purpose, say 900-1000 rpm is still just barely audible but moves much more air and cooling. 1200-1500 for high.
Once the fans kick in, or cpus are under a work load, it can end up being cooler than it was.
The new 2009s with HT can be forced to use more power, create more heat. For 2006, the big issue is/was the ATI X1900 and clogging with dust and overheating, which needs to be pulled and cleaned every 3 months.

  • Mac Pro early 2008 boots to black screen

Four times out of five, on average, the Mac boots to a black screen -- a 30" Cinema Display.
I believe the computer is booting all the way up, because I have the front power button set to put the computer to sleep, and when I manually power down the machine using the power button, the Mac will go to sleep first.
Also, the Mac will go into Firewire disk mode when connected to my MacBook.
The "boot-to-black-screen" occurs from cold or warm boots.
I've tried both 10.5 and 10.6 OS -- no difference, results the same on both.
    Here's what I've tried:
Reinstalling and updating OS both 10.5 and 10.6
    Diskwarrior
    PRAM zap
Pulling all USB and firewire peripherals off the computer (except the Apple Wired Keyboard that shipped with the PC) -- Mac promptly booted to black screen, so peripherals are not the issue.
Changing displays (in this case, a Samsung 17") -- same result
I have tried booting to the Apple Hardware Test on my commercial Leopard DVD and Snow Leopard DVD, but the machine will not boot to this (the Leopard disk will boot the AHT on other Macs). I no longer have the original CDs that shipped with the Mac.
I've suspected the video card, but according to other posts, apparently this is not the cause.
I'm now suspecting a motherboard firmware issue.
Before this, the Mac Pro was having a related issue pertaining to VMWare Fusion, wherein the Mac would occasionally not wake from sleep, logging a VMWare Fusion kernel crash.
For the moment, I'm not shutting down the Mac Pro, just turning off the Cinema Display. I've left this computer running for up to two months without a reboot, so I'm confident that it will stay up and remain stable.

I'll watch to see if you get an answer. I have a late 2008 Mac Book Pro 15 with the same problem. It boots xp good every time. But I often need to use external monitor to gain control of the OSX boot. It gives tone, shows gray, shows apple and gear the short blue and then strait to black and front LED seems to indicate sleep. Very frustrating. Happens on both use best graphics and conserve battery display settings. Tried the reset pram, safe boot, save boot verbose. All no good.

  • Mac Pro 1,1 (2006) turns on when plugged in, won't boot

I've been battling with this problem for a few days now.
On my Mac Pro 2006 1,1 the cursor froze one day while I was using the computer.  Stupidly, I waited a few minutes for it to respond and then forced the power off.  Since then, the computer powers on, and it chimes and shows the apple boot logo, but no loading circle as it normally should if it were loading OS X.  I tried leaving it on for an hour or so, with no avail.  It seems that my PC keyboard which I have plugged in via USB (I also tried a second PC keyboard, so it's not the keyboard itself) does not seem to be recognized in this state.  I've tried SMC reset, both by turning off the machine, unplugging, pressing the power key for 15  seconds, replugging and waiting 5 seconds to start the machine, and then pressing the internal button on the motherboard, no luck there.  The strange thing is that the Mac Pro will start itself up right when plugged in, when it's been unplugged for a while, even after the SMC reset.
I've tried all of the possible keyboard key combinations I can find, and I'm convinced that the USB ports aren't working.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Hi ..
Boot from your install disc while holding down the C key.
That way you can access the Disk Utility app to repair the startup disk and reinstall OS X.
If that's not possible, reset the PRAM  >  About NVRAM and PRAM

  • Mac Pro 1,1 (2006) Fans at Full Speed at Boot

I have a 2006 Mac Pro (Model Identifier MacPro1,1) and as soon as the power button is pressed, the fans will go to full speed.
Diagnostic LEDs are showing Trickle Power as good but every other LED does not light up. The main one that should be on should be the Power On, which should show green within 5 seconds of pressing the power button.
Any feedback on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

No video. But it isn't the video? and I don't know that you tested it. I do know the three cards I mentioned have been and are due for junk heap. Failing, not supported, underpowered, will go out.
I have seen bad RAM do all kinds of things.
But reading the forums, the number of issues with video cards is rather high.
Trouble shoot is educated guesses and hunches, especially when I don't know you did X and Y and confirmed it isn't your UPS or video card.
    There is no hardware profile.
There is no mention of WHAT video card.
    What was done.
    Etc.
Give me a break. Those are not guesses. You are expecting mind reading.
I do take offense at the rudeness of your thanklessness of anyone offer of help, time and effort.
That helps others and narrows it down and rules out a few things.
You'd do better with Google and MacRumors I'm sure.

  • I have a Mac Pro 1.1 (2006).....Can I upgrade to ATI 5770 for MAC?

I have a 2006 MAC Pro intel......Need to upgrade my Graphics card to acess all of the effects in my Final Cut Pro 4 Studio.  Hoping I can go with an ATI 5770 since it will also work with FCPX "IF" I ever decide to upgrade to LION and FCPX.  I have had mixed findings and can't seem to get a straight answer from APPLE.  Do I need the 5770 for MAC or do I need the (Upgrade fro MAC) kit?  I have 10.6.4 (snow leopard as an OS and don't want to upgrade to Lion yet because I don't want to use FCPX.

you won't get straight answer and yet there are dozens in the comments section of the product page for 5770 from MacPro1,1 owners running 10.6.5+.
Not sure what you mean by "upgrade kit" vs "5770 for Mac" but you want Apple card and possibly power connector.

  • When I boot up my Mac Pro, I get a small black puzzle looking piece on the lower right side of my thunderbolt

    Brand new Mac Pro, 2 thunderbolt monitors;
I get a small black puzzle looking piece on the lower right side of my  1st thunderbolt monitor when I boot up. It goes away once the computer fully boots, it is only on  there for a second or so. Does anyone have a similar issue?
These are only 1 month old.

It has been seen before, when hardware was malfunctioning:

You have a Macbook Pro. A Mac Pro is a desktop. The light on your power cord is orange when it's charging. It turns green once it's fully charged.

  • Mac Pro 1.1 2006-2007

Originally this posted as 1996-1997 as I was attempting to post this at 2:30am.
I recently had an experience with my Mac Pro 1.1 where it started lagging badly and when I attempted to reboot it locked up. At one point the Time Machine external drive unmounted and my USB ports weren't functioning. Later I attempted to retrieve the back up drive and do a complete restore, but found Disk Utility would never finish repairing the disk and permissions. In fact, this caused the Mac Pro to lock up and I would lose my USB ports again.
I ran the Apple Hardware Test twice and no results that would tell me what happened.
It was until I purchased a new drive to put in the external back up drive that my Mac Pro returned to normal. In fact I have seen better performance.
My question is, is I would like to hear opinions on this. Was this a gradual failure of a back up drive that had slowly been causing my Mac Pro to run sluggish until it finally crashed? Can a failing back up drive using Time Machine cause this? If not then what caused the Mac Pro to lock up? What can cause USB ports to stop functioning altogether and then return not afte a reboot but eventually?
I'm concerned that I could be losing my Mac Pro in the near future. I would love the new Mac Pro coming out later this year, but money is an issue right now. I would not be happy with a Mac Mini and iMacs are still financially out of my reach as well.
    Thanks you.

    My advice:
Replace the system drive with a Samsung 840 120 or 250GB SSD
Upgrade boot drive on a regular basis - for some that might be every two years
You are STARVING your system with so little memory. Anemia most likely.
If you are running Lion then upgrade to 10.7.5
If you did not do a "clean" install of Lion ./ or at least a clean install of Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and then update to Lion, that too can be an issue.

An SSD is a great way for $100 to make your mac faster and better than ever. Not justs quick boot and program launching but that too.
And a 1-2TB WD Black for data.
And of course you should be cloning your system, cloning your data drive(s), even swap and use a 2nd TimeMachine drive "only on weekend" to have a redundant backup set there too.
And instead of using USB, use FW400/800
You also have two extra SATA ports on the logicboard. For $25 run through a PCI card out the back for backups (not hot swap though). Ideal is to have internal 1-3TB drive for backup.
Can also add PCIe SATA card to add external backups; add USB3 (iffy).
If you have been living on 3GB RAM you have not been seeing good performance from your Mac Pro 1,1 (same model as mine, 7 yrs old this week)
