MacBook Acting up

My macbook has been acting funny.... I was wondering, does the apple stores do "tune-ups" on the macbooks? Just general cleaning and such?

If you take your machine to your local Apple Store, the geniuses there will be able to tell you whether or not they can help. The chances are strong that they can. However, if you are not still covered under AppleCare, it may cost you a service fee. Good luck!

  • Macbook acting wierd even after fresh install of OS

i've got a 13" macbook i've had for a couple of years. i've had no problems with it until about a month ago when it started acting weird. it was becoming very slow and crashed regularly when i tried to run simple applications like itunes or safari. even when i tried to shut it down, it sometimes gave me that message on the screen where it informes you to hold down the power button to shut down.
i decided to do a complete re-install of my osx to give it a fresh start. so having re-installed leopard, and with nothing on my hard drive apart from the pro tools and cubase programs i've re-installed (it won't be these as they're both legit programs that i've been using on this mac for 2 years), it still seems to crash and not shut down properly.
i've actually done another clean re-install a couple of days ago to see if this made a difference, but sti ll the same problems.
i was under the impression that any viruses or bugs that we're making my mac act weird would have been wiped when i done a fresh install of my os.
can anyone tell me where i'm going wrong?
    thanks

    It's not a virus.
The screen you see (that requests you to restart your computer) is referred to as a kernel panic; these are often hardware-related.
What you're describing sounds like a possible hard drive failure.
Have you run the Apple Hardware Test? Is your computer still under warranty?
Get your data backed up, if you haven't already, just in case!

Ok , probably sounds like a good idea from the sound of it.
Are you ok with doing that?
But before you do have you reset the Pram, you can do this by holding down the command option P R keys down when restarting the macbook and if done correctly the macbook will chime as normal but keep those keys held down for 3 chimes in total, then release them and the macbook will fire up as usual.
Try that first and post back after and tell me how its running.( be aware though that this will reset your settings to the default ones)

  • 50 First Dates: Macbook acting like that

My Macbook Pro is acting like the movie "50 First Dates".
Safari always opens the tabs that were opened on the June 27th and has no more history than this date.
Mail, always opens in the last message I read that day.
And this nothing to do with the selection: reopen the same windows next login
I tryed to reinstal Mountain Lion, but didn't work out.

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line on this page to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Macbook acts weird unless disk in superdrive

So I recently got this macbook, I have had it for three months. I really like it for the most part. There is one exception though and it seems to have something to do with the cd drive (it might not even be a problem i might just be a noob). Whenever I wake the macbook from sleep it makes the usual sound from the cd drive but if no disc is in the drive the computer will be basically frozen for about 30 sec then just works normally. For the most part I can deal with that but it happens at other times too. If I open the disk utility it will make the same sound that it does when it wakes up and then will freeze for a short time with a spinning color wheel then it will go away. It also happens if I go to the "Serial-ATA" section under more info in "about this mac". The weird thing is none of this happens if a disc is in the drive not even the waking up sound

I just wanted to add that any time I press the eject key on the macbook it will temporarily freeze to. Is this normal? I have seen other macbooks that open disk utility and can use it almost immediately but my macbook will be frozen for a minute.

  • Help! MacBook acts dead

My son's 2008 MacBook does nothing when pressing the start button. I tried pressing the start button for 5 seconds with the battery removed and un plugged with no success.
Will the computer start without the battery installed plugged into the wall?
Any ideas would be helpful before going to the Apple store.

    Try this procedure:
    Remove battery and power adapter.
Hold down power button for 10 seconds.
Reinstall battery and attach power adapter.
Hold down Command-Option-P-R, a total of four keys, and press power button. Don't release the keys.
Continue holding the four keys until you hear the startup sound twice, then release.

  • Macbook acting very strange

Hi, guys  hope you could help me out I'm really confused :[
So basically i fell asleep with my macboook open next to me (while also charging). This is not the first time i have done this.. usually however i would touch the mouse pad and it would ask me to type in the password as it logged out overnight... This morning when i typed in my password i found that my screen saver changed on it's own back to the "stock" one of the colorful wave..so i restarted the computer to find out that the screen saver was still the "stock" one.. so i changed it back..
The next thing I noticed was the fact that my FaceTime/iPhoto apps could not connect to camera... so i quit and did a restart which resolved nothing....
I also happened to notice that my applications got jumbled up and some got lost like EuroTruckSimulator2..while other like Serato DJ lost the midi's mapping files
i did download apps from the App Store the previous night and i did do a reformat on the iPhone a day before but i dont think that might have changed anything..
could my hardisk be on it's way out ?/do i have a virus ? /
i wrote this using the same Macbook

  • Macbook acting strangely

Often, after my macbook shuts off its screen (not necessarily to sleep, although the same thing happens then too), I can't get it to come back up. It won't prompt me for my password until I hit the power button, and even then, I am unable to type anything. Restarting fixes it, but it is a pain. Also odd, I noticed my fan running when I wasn't doing anything, I checked the activity monitor, and found my dock was using over 80% of the CPU, and not just for a little while, but consistently, that's not right is it? I can't get to an apple store for a week and a half, just so you know. Thanks for any help.

Make sure in the Security panel in System Preferences that you don't have it set to ask for a password on wake from sleep or screensaver. Additionally, if you have an external keyboard or mouse connected, that could be causing your inability to type.

  • Macbook acting up on start-up: blinking folder with question mark?

Last night, I inserted a DVD into my macbook, and as I was adjusting the volume, it seemed to have frozen. I tried to quit the DVD player, and then tried to shut down with no success, so I held the power button to power off. Upon start-up, my computer made clicking sounds, then proceeded to a screen with a blinking folder with a question mark on it. Nothing happened, and the computer wouldn't start up. I shut down and started up multiple times with the same result. Eventually, I was tired and just shut it off to go to bed. In the morning, my computer started up as usual. Later in the day, the startup with the blinking folder with a question mark and and the clicking sounds returned. I turned my computer off and let it sit for a little bit, then started up again. The computer started up as normal. So while I'm thankful that my computer is still starting up, I would like to know what the folder means, and what I should do about it? I have been planning on getting a new computer at the end of this school year, in June, so I want to make this macbook last until then. Please help! Thank you!

Unfortunately, the clicking sound may be the "click of death." That is, the hard drive may be failing. Open up Disk Utility, which is located in Applications -> Utilities. Click on the hard drive on the left side. On the bottom of the screen you should see S.M.A.R.T. Status. Does that say verified or failing? Back up your data ASAP regardless.
Is the DVD still in the drive? If so, eject it and see if it persists.
As for what the blinking question mark, it means that no device with a system to startup from was detected.

  • Macbook Acts Like it Doesn't HAVE a Battery

I (like many others) have been having issues with my Macbook Pro battery.
I changed out the battery a year about, and hoped that would be the end of my problems. My first battery deteriorated after almost 2 years of use, and was only holding a tiny charge. The new battery worked well for just over a year (long enough for the warranty to expire), and now is completely kaput. What boggles me though is that I treated my new battery very carefully, calibrated it every month, etc, and it still died. The LED indicators on the battery says its fully charged, but if the magsafe adapter slips off, my computer shuts off. I think that 3.25 years is way too soon to relegate my macbook to being desktop only! I've tried things like resetting the SMC, does anybody else have suggestions/ideas? Coconut battery says that the batter capacity is -1mAh!! I feel like maybe there's some other problem here that I'm missing! Any Help would be useful! (I've read other posts about people who's batteries have died, mine seems a little different, because my computer used to insist that it had 3 hours of battery time, etc, today it's gotten worse and says there is no charge).
    Thanks much

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
What does the System profiler say about the condition of your battery? If it says "check battery", then the battery is on the fritz and needs to be replaced.
The battery does contain its own microprocessor. Possibly this is messed up, giving you a false indication of being fully charged. Or maybe it's fully charged with -1mAh of capacity, which would translate into an exceedingly short run time.
How many cycles? If over 300, it has given you what it was designed to do.
Batteries do wear out, some sooner than others. Not much you can do other than to replace them. By using the battery on a regular basis and calibrating it regularly, you can maximize the life of the battery. Unfortunately, you still can't make it last indefinitely.
    Good luck!

  • Macbook Acted Strangely - Please help

    Hello,
Earlier this afternoon I was simply using my Macbook, doing nothing particularly tasking for the computer, when suddenly I was not able to tab through programs (command+tab) - meaning, when I hit command+tab the bar in the center of the screen with my programs was not appearing. I thought this was odd but shrugged it off for the time being. Very soon after (a matter of seconds) I noticed that my dock wasn't appearing when I moused over its location. I attempted to see if I could make the dock appear by editing it in the System Preferences, but the preferences appeared to lock up as well. I decided I would attempt to restart my computer, but as it was shutting down it froze. I force-shutdown with the power button and when I restarted everything was working perfectly fine again. I am a very paranoid person when it comes to computer safety and just want to know if anyone out there has an idea of what might have happened. My main question at the moment is: is there something wrong with my mac (trojan, virus, anything of that nature) and should I be worried? Or was this just a hiccup or a freeze that happens occasionally that I should not worry too much about?

Or was this just a hiccup or a freeze that happens occasionally that I should not worry too much about?
    Yup. I wouldn't worry about it. Forget about a virus. 99.999% non-existent.
Run fsck if you want to check your hard drive out.
    1. Reboot/Startup holding your Command-S key down.
    2. At the command line type the following and hit 'Return.'
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    3. If it finds a problem and repairs it, immediately run fsck again until the drive checks OK.
    4. After it has check/repaired your disk, type 'reboot' and hit 'Return' again. Unit should bootup normally.

  • How to create a portal page on your macbook acting as an access point

This is a higher level question.
I want to use my Mac as an access point. When devices connect to the Mac and open up their browsers I want to route them to a specific page.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

In Portal User Menu is displayed based on the roles assigned to a user.
In a nutsheel if you want a user to see some menu in portal. The following needs to be done.
    1. Create iViews/Pages/Worksets as required
    2. Create Role and set entry point to true (There are other ways which you will learn later).   Create as many roles as you want.
    3. Assign the iViews/Pages/Worksets to the roles as needed.
    4. Assign the roles to users or user groups
Steps 1,2,3 will be performed using content adminstration tab.
Step 4 will be perfomed using Super administration tab.
Now when users login to portal the menu will be based on roles (first level tab will be role names). Second and third level menus depend on the iView/pages/worksets assigned to the roles.
    Hope this solves your problem.

  • Can I make Mail on my MacBook act like Mail on mi iPad/iPhone?

I've been trying to do this for some time.  I'd like to make Mail on OSX behave like Mail on iOS.  In other words, I don't want every email downloaded off of Gmail.  I just want say the last 100 or so with the ability to search for additional emails that are in my Gmail account when I'm connected to the Internet.  I don't want it to download my entire inbox and clutter my hard drive as I really don't need offline access to my email account.
Is there a setting I just haven't correctly tweaked or do I need to look at other programs.  I've been using Sparrow but it also is a downloader.
    Any assistance would be appreciated!

I suggest buying Sparrow Mail for 10 USD.

I just did and I like it already...
Doesnt do exactly what you're after but it seems much lighter/quicker and has a much simpler interface.
    Good luck!

  • MacBook Pro (mid-2009) is a complete mess: constant freezing/crashing

Let me start with a bit of history: I bought my MBP in August 2009, and since then it has gotten progressively more aggravating. The hard drive failed a year ago and I had it replaced in April, and then it failed once again, and got a new one in October (2010), along with a new hard drive cable.
Unfortunately, about two weeks ago, the computer went completely on the fritz. It would freeze (beachball) for no apparent reason, other than when the hard drive was being used, such as going through iTunes, Safari, or Aperture. However, after doing a disk check, both in Disk Utility and using fsck in Single User mode, there were absolutely no errors to be found, which, unlike the two times my hard drive failed, shows that the HDD is indeed okay.
I did an archive and install and it seemed to have helped the problem for a grand total of 2 weeks. This week, my computer starting going at it again, and not even consistently. On Tuesday, it would be just about unusable, beachballing at the slightest "load" (such as opening a third tab in Safari), and that one freeze would bring down the entire system. Everything, even if it's working, is slow and laggy--things like scrolling down or clicking on something might trigger a beachball for a second or two, or just take far too long even with no beachball. After a bunch of forced restarts, my screen began flickering on the edges, most visibly at a high brightness. However, after several more restarts, it quit doing it--this also happened during the first set of crashes two weeks ago.
Yesterday, my computer was more or less fine, and I might've only restarted it once or twice. Today however, we're back to where we were two days ago--constant freezes that all but prohibit me from even going on the internet. The computer gets stuck going to sleep and has trouble waking up. It doesn't respond fully to when I plug it into my Henge Dock (the Henge Dock is not the problem, because the MacBook acts just as badly on its own), in that the display never shows up. One time today, it woke up from sleep, but the menubar icons (SystemUI Server) had crashed, and subsequently everything else as well.
The most confusing part about all this is that there is NOTHING to be seen in Console in terms of any crashes, whether an app, the kernel, or any processes. I also took my computer to the Apple Store this week, and Spotlight didn't work except for maybe a dictionary entry on the term entered (I don't use Spotlight so I never noticed this). Even when booted off an external HDD, that external OS couldn't search my hard drive either, or it was really, really slow at it. More surprising were the results of the hardware test; it came up completely clear, with no errors. The genius suggested I do a clean install of my OS, which is a ridiculous solution, as I had done this last year already and the OS I was running before had been migrated from multiple computers for years beforehand. I'm sure you all well know how big of a pain it is to do that. Otherwise, it's sending the computer over to the Apple depot.
I'm sorry for the extremely long-winded rant/problem descriptions, but I really just want to know from people with perhaps more experience in incomprehensible Mac problems what might be wrong with my computer. I really think it's a deep hardware issue, such as a bad logic board. I'd like to hear some opinions before I back everything off and ship this POS (the most unreliable Mac I've ever owned) to Apple. Thanks so much for reading and I hope somebody can help answer my question!

After opening the computer up the only evidence of where liquid has been is on the corner with hard drive / cd drive etc. There is not evidence of liquid damage to logic board on the otherside of the computer. Hard Drive and Ram have both been replaced.
Obviously there is still a chance liquid has got to the other area and I have not realised it...

  • Using the macbook as a display

    Hey guys,
I am almost positive that I won't be able to do this, but is there any kind of software/hardware combination that I can use to make my macbook act as a display for an xbox 360? That is to say, In place of a TV, i would plug the 360 into some kind of cable which goes into my xbox and have it work? Thanks in advance.

You should check out an Elgato Systems EyeTV 250 and see if you think that will work for you.
