MacBook games lag :'(

Hey guys. I have a question i was hoping you guys would be able to answer. So basically, i have a MacBook Pro late 2011 with a 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 processor, with 4GB of RAM. My graphics card is an Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB and pretty much all good games lag
Any suggestions or tips?

Hello,
Based on your current specs, I would imagine you're getting some lag. MacBooks aren't exactly the greatest at playing games (although the newer ones are quite capable), but there is always room for improvement. You can upgrade your RAM to up to 16GB which should make a noticeable difference, but 8 will also be fine.
As far as graphics cards go, not much you can change with MacBook Pro's, but I believe your model should have 2 - 1 integrated, and one dedicated. The computer should automatically switch between them (when it needs more power it'll switch to the dedicated). I dunno though, your computer may be different.
Next is the game settings. I've got an early 2011 MacBook pro with i7 and same amount of RAM as you, but it's just 2.0 GHz. Playing any games on highest settings is usually a lagfest (on Mac and Windows Bootcamp). I would reccomend turning off things such as anti-aliasing and various filtering. Another option that makes a big difference is resolution. If you can live with a little bit lower settings, this can be a big fps increaser. Try going from 1440x900 to 720p. This allows me to play games like Assassin's Creed III and Battlefield 3 with no hassle. Usually around 30 fps - could be better, but for a laptop, does great. Also, playing while plugged into AC power can help a little bit.
..another option is an external video card. Never used these, but I heard some of them are pretty good

  • G405s Games lagging when plugged in

When I start playing a game, for example FIFA 14, the game lags a bit as I use the software FRAPS and the FPS fluctuates a lot and goes down to around 45. As soon as I take out the power cord, the FPS rises to 60 and the game starts running smooth. Please tell me a solution to this!
I am currently using Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit)

    Hi Candafaizan,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Community.
As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with games lags when the adapter is plugged in, in your G404s laptop.
As the only way to confirm the issue with adapter or the motherboard, you need to check with the other adapter, as you have mentioned that there is no extra adapter running only in battery mode is to remove the adapter and play with the hellp of the battery only, hence please visit the nearest service centre for further details.

  • Qosmio Q50 - game lag - is it overheating?

    Hi all,
I took a break from playing games for a few months to concentrate on my studies. I started playing them again recently, but after about 10 minutes the fans become really loud (probably working at their full power) and the game lags to the extent that it is unplayable. The fans then calm down and the game plays normally again for another 5 minutes and then the same process occurs.
    The process:
1-> Launch game and play for about 10 minutes
2-> The fans become very loud and the game lags greatly lasting around 1 minutes
3-> The fans calm down and the game plays smoothly
4-> After about 5 minutes we go back to step 2
I didn't used to experience this problem, and I do not know why I am suddenly experiencing it. Is my laptop overheating? Why would the game lag when the fans are working at there hardest and not when they are working quietly? Wouldn't it make more sense that the laptop would run smoother when the fans are working harder because the system should be cooler?
Is there anything I could do to fix this?

    >Why would the game lag when the fans are working at there hardest and not when they are working quietly?
Fans work faster and harder because of the higher temperature.
The CPU and GPU would be clogged down to reduce the heat dissipation
What does this means? This means that both chips would run slower and this could affect game performance.
Is it more clear for you? I recommend reading some threads here regarding this theme

  • Why does my Macbook suddenly lag playing games?

I just got Left 4 Dead 2 on steam for free, and decided to play it earlier today. It worked fairly well on low settings, as my macbook is fairly old (late 2009 model).
It has 4GB of RAM in it which is usually enough for games and so it proved... Until now.
The second time I loaded the game up it lagged unbearably, so bad the game audio just stopped completely, and the game was unplayable. I tried restarting the game, steam, and even purging my inactive memory all to no avail.
Only when I restarted the laptop did it actually work well enough to play.
I'm running OSX Mavericks so you know, so does anyone know why this would suddenly happen. I know Macs aren't designed for gaming but it's nice to be able to play something.
    Cheers.

I'm afraid that I have exactly the same issue with my new MacBook. random appearance of the 'would you like to shutdown.....' dialog box. Which if not canceled just kills the power. It doesn't even go through the proper shutdown process and looses all unsaved changes etc.
It doesn't seem to happen when I'm at work with USB keyboard and mouse plugged in, so I guess it's something to do with the new built in keyboard and trackpad assembly.
Looking forward to a firmware update!

  • Macbook video lag

I run a macbook with the 1.83 processor and 2 gig of ram, but let me start from the begining....my computer used to have only 512 ram, the only way i could play WoW was to turn all the settings as low as they would go, including the resolution and even the color from 24 and 24 depth to 16 and 24 depth and only then was it even runable, so i decided to fix this i would upgrade the ram, so i went on newegg and got myself 2 gigs of patriot ram which is what everyone on the apple fourms i read seemed to be suggesting, i installed that and it went smoothly and everything worked fine, so i load wow, it ran like a dream for about oh 10 minutes, i had everything in the high settings...then it started running like crap so naturally i turned the settings down, still crap, turned them as low as they go.....still crap....its not even a matter of fps anymore, its like 1 frame ever 2-3 seconds with all the settings as low as they go, then about every 15 seconds the sounds and graphics will lock up for a few seconds, then it will go back to being horrible, i read the other fourms on here and it said try turning vertex shaders off, tried it, ran good for about 10 seconds then back to the same old game of not even playable, im not in a big city, im outside of goldshire in the country actually...also when it first started running like crap i tried reinstallng the os, which i ended up doing twice because the first time didnt fix it, hard drive was wiped clean and reinstall wow, still crap, the interesting thing is when i open the acitivity moniter, there is like 1.5 gig or ram sitting free, that is with the lowest settings, and wow is using about 250mb ram....if i crank the settings up i will pull 500+mb ram but still just as choppy which makes not much sense to me....and one time i got a screen telling me i had to restart, but that is the first time it has happened since i have owned this computer, so im not worried about it being a restart issue....i have repaired disk permissions and everything, all my os updates are installed....i dont know what to do when its so bad it is unplayable.....it ran way better than this on my 1ghz powerbook g4 with 512 ram, this is supposed to be a way faster computer i thought, also at some random times when i am running programs like just itunes and i chat it wil lag the system out so bad the typing in ichat is delayed by a few seconds, but it also did this and even more before i upgraded my ram....i did read somewhere on the apple fourms though that the intel intergrated card in macbooks can only use 80mb max of the physical ram, but i dont know how much truth to that, why would that be feasable when i have 2 gigs of ram sitting in my computer working and recongized....i tried maxing out the ram by openng up all the apps i can and i can use it all, i know it works, i just wanna know why wow dosent work and also why most of my ram is in free and not unused or even being used when i know it should be, is the intergrated video in here that bad, because i can imagine it being as bad as what i am expierencing....anyone have ANY sugestions on how to fix this?

the bad thing is that it dosent do this all the time, it picks and chooses basically, it shows up at the most random times, one time it will be from opening safari, the next time it will do it when i try and close mail it might go 2 days without doing it and it might happen twice in 5 minutes, i never know, i would take it to the apple store, but it isnt doing it consistantly enough i dont think, and if i showed them wow, they would probally just tell me not to play, but i would still be having my other video issues

  • Websites failing to load, games lag, but connectio...

    Hello,
Hoping someone here might be able to help me out with this one. For the past few days now some web pages havbe been failing to load and games are occasionally disconnecting. However the entire time our connection seems to be remaining stable and connected.
It appears to happen for no reason, and it only affects some websites. bbc.co.uk, google search, and these Broadband forums. Other sites will load perfectly fine, including both the BT speedtest and the ookla speedtest (both of which show our internet speed & ping to be perfectly fine.
I'm at a loss as to what could be causing this issue. I've set the DNS settings in my network adaptor to google DNS to see if that makes a difference, but the fact it affects online gaming in the form of lag makes me thing this is not the case.
I'm hoping to try a traceroute the next time the issue happens, and hopefully have it complete. The problem is by the time we confirm a non-working site and get part way through the traceroute the problem seems to fix itself so we cannot get confirmation of where the issue is coming from.
I'm wondering if anyone else is having similar problems, or has maybe had a similar problem in the past and can suggest any steps or tests I can take to find/remedy this problem?

nothing has been posted here about it have you checked the service status page or the status phone line 08001690199 and see if there is any problems in your area

  • HELP please! my macbook keeps lagging after i transferred fonts into my comp.

i got my macbook about 2 weeks ago and recently i transferred fonts into my mac and after that when i would use InDesign, it would take forever to open up like 1 min + and when i would go and change fonts or scroll through fonts it would lag. the rainbow thing would spin for a long time.
also in iMessage when i want to change the font, it doesnt change unless i close the program and reopen it compared to when i first got the macbook, it would change right on the spot.
should i take this to apple for them to have a look at it?
also im wondering if this happens to anyone else?but when i have safari on full screen and i go to my top site page, i have to click once before being able to click on any of the grids. is this normal?

I've over 2,200 fonts installed on my 15" late 2011 MBP - while you might have a font problem (some or even one might be damaged or corrupt) I don't think that your problem is with 'too many' fonts. Although I've an SSD and InDesign CS6 opens in seconds, it should load in a matter of seconds on a spinning platter hard drive, too.
Did you install the fonts via Font Book? It will usually let you know if there are problems with any font that you install.
Disable certain fonts that you installed by using FontBook. Then activate them, one set by one set to make sure that they aren't damaged.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • MacBook Game problem

My MacBook is only a few months old and I've run games and game demos on it. But lately, when I try and open a couple of my demos, the screen goes black and flcikers, as if going to full screen mode to play the game, but then exits the program, without any warning or explanation.
I have tried the games using the different resolution the games offer, but no luck. Any advice?

    nvm

  • When in group chat, skype has bad connection and games lag

Okay so I have searched almost every related post and cant find this exact issue and ive tried all the standard stuff to fix internet issuesWhat happens is So I moved to a new house and had no internet for 2 weeks starts may 20th about, and we got internet around june 5th. Ever since then when I join a group call with my 5 local friends Ive been in a group call with for 4 years i have bad connection and when i play online games it lags. It use to affect my internet browser, google chrome by making stuff stop loading but that isnt the case anymore. I have tried many things. Like recently I join skype group call and it seems to be fine but once i join their terraria server both skype lags and terraria and I end up losing connection. I have a theory but there still a lot of variables. Whenever my one friend is in the group call i lag a lot more than I usually do, but not everytime, and sometimes i still lag when hes not in the call. Its also him hosting the terraria server where its really bad. It has been like this for other games too though and I have tried many solutions. I feel like maybe its a bandwith thing but i get over 100 mbs download speed and around 15 mps upload speed and low ping. I can also download 2 games and play a online game with 0 problems but once skype is involved it becomes terrible.I really would like a fix, I have used skype forever and I dont think my friends really wanna use anything else.I got windows 10 about a week ago, the beta, but it did it on windows 7 too.I have also tried downloading older skypes but it keeps downloading the newer one automatically even with automatic updates off. Also when I lag on skype the little refreshing/connecting icons comes up and I lag to my friends, but I never hear them lag.

If you are swapping out operating systems and nothing is changing then the variables you need to look into are: 1,  Your wired/wireless connection.  Try wired if going wireless as you may have issues sustaining a good connection with the myriad of ports Skype uses.  This can be due to distance, interference or other factors. 2,  Try bypassing your router and go directly connected to your modem (if possible).  Issues with the router firmware, its configuration or the limitations of the  router itself could be causing bandwidth related issue.  Going wired to the modem would be ideal.  3. You can try disabling/enabling uPnP in your router to see if that makes a difference.  Some routers handle uPnP well, others have performance issues with it.  4  Cable modem/Line issues -  You could have stability issues due to the quality of the modem based off standard/tier.  You could have line conditions that affect upload/download stability or both, under load. I've had issues with Skype that were related to my wireless router firmware.  I've also had to swap out my modem to a more compatible and higher tier one (twice) when my ISP performed infrastructure changes.

  • IMac Retina (M290X). Games lagging @ 1280x1024. Whats wrong?

    Hello!
I just changed my previous iMac (with 2560x1440 display / GF680MX) to Retina / M290X
All the games are LAGGING now at any resolution!!! Whats wrong?!
Even Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 LAG violently! Why?!
In-game resolution is set to 1280x1024! They performed nice on my previous, GF680MX, model!

    Hello! Great thatnx for help!
    I managed to defeat lags:
    1) Lags GONE after clean reinstall (initially, I restored iMac state from Time Mcahine copy) AND turning ON frame syncronization (?!). Will continue investigation what exactly cause lags - as u know frame sync usually degrades performance and I cannot imagine how restoring state from TM could cause lags. Will try to fugure out what exactly caused them and report the result. Maybe some other people can come acrooss this problem!
    2) Just in case: in Russia return policy is the same

  • Macbook games

    Hi,
I know the Macbook is not for games but somehow I was able to play Call of duty 2 so would Call of duty 4 Modern Warfare work at all?

They are making a mac version yes but only the MacBook Pro, iMac or Mac Pro could handle it.
There is no way the intergrated graphics card could handle COD 4.
On the other hand if you're looking for games then one of the biggest Mac games out there has got to be World of Warcraft and it can run on a MacBook and very well i might add.

  • Macbook Pro lags after Yosemite upgrade

    Hi,
I upgraded my Macbook Pro (8gb, Jan 13) to Yosemite yesterday....
Since the upgrade it is painfully slow and sluggish.  It takes ages to boot up.  Once finally booted up everything lags.  I see the coloured pinwheel permanently.
I tried running the internet but it's impossible to move around and type.  It freezes constantly. text has to catch up with my typing.
I have tried all the tweaks and scans I can find and even reinstalled it.  Nothing has changed.  I am hardwired to the web so wireless is not an issue, but I did turn off bluetooth etc as advised.
I am at the point where I will need to go to recovery and revert back to its original purchased state!!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  I am desperate to get back to a machine that works!

    Hi ..
Since boot time is slow open System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items
Remove all items listed there. Same for  HD > Library > StartupItems
Restart your Mac to monitor boot time.
And make sure there's enough avaiable disk space. Click the Apple  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage. Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.
    Check the hard drive.
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utillities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:  Verify Disk (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If Disk Utility reports errors, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys.
From there you should be able to access the built in utilities in OS X Recovery to repair the startup disk and restore OS X.
As far as the internet is concerned, if you are using  Safari, try the following:
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.
    Click:   Remove All Website Data
    Then delete the cache.
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that doesn't help, troubleshoot Safari extensions.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.

  • Packet Loss Causing Game Lag

For the past few days I've been experiencing severe lag while playing an online game.  The ping is normal, but the game stops responding or its response is delayed to such an extent that it's impossible to continue playing.  My friend attributed the problem to the packet loss that Verizon customers have been experiencing.  I'm curious as to when this issue will be resolved, as it's extremely annoying and has prompted me to consider switching to a different internet service provider.

Step one: Visit http://www.giganews.com/line_info.html and post up the Traceroute the page shows, if you wish. Be aware that your non-bogan public IP Address will show up.  It might shown up as the final hop (bottom-most line of the trace)  might contain a hop with your IP address in it. Either remove that line or show only the first two octets. What I'm looking for is a line that mentions "ERX" in it's name towards the end. If for some reason the trace does not complete (two lines full of Stars), keep the trace route intact.
For example this what I saw when I was using Verizon
    news.giganews.com
traceroute to 71.242.*.* (71.242.*.*), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets

Step two: Can you provide the Transceiver Statistics from your modem?
#3 If you don't know how to get that info:
    a) What is the brand and model of your modem?
    b) If you have a RJ-45 WAN port router connected to it: What is the brand and model of the RJ-45 WAN port router?
#4 If you have a RJ-45 WAN port router connected to the modem, even if you know how to get the Transceiver Statistics from the modem: What is the brand and model of the RJ-45 WAN port router?
