Macbook pro 13" 8GB ram v's i7 processor

Hi, I am looking at buying a 13" macbook pro and find i have a choice of getting 1. the i5 processor model with 500gb and 8gbRAM or
2. the i7 processor model with 500gb and 4gbRAM for about the same money.
My principal use will be photography work with aperture 3 and photoshop, but i would like to future proof it for advances in technology.
Any advice? Thanks.

I would always recommend getting the best processor, especially if you are concerned about the future, because they cannot be replaced. Memory is easy and cheap to replace yourself and can be done at any time you feel the need, so if aperture 4 comes out for example, and perhaps runs a bit slow you'll have somewhere to go. Memory is also fairly cheap, and will only become cheaper, Look at 'OWC' (google it). This week I ordered 8gb, delivered to England in 2 days and only cost about £80 in total. Also the installation instructional videos are very helpful.
At the moment though the i7 and 4gb will be great for photography, and is what I would buy, and you'll always have that reassurance of being able to put 8 or even 16gb into your machine as and when its needed.
Happy Mac-ing

Actually the unibody machines switched from an Intel chipset to the NVidia MCP79 chipset.
The thing is tho, what I dont understand is why both late 2008 and mid 2009 motherboards use the came motherboard (both using the same chipset) and still limit the user from doing this. I thinks its just apple's way of saying "Buy a new computer"
Below in the links, NVidia say that their chipset used in the late 2008 systems can support 8GB but its up to Apple if they want to enable it or not.
It's really not fair at all, its been proven that the late 2008 systems can support the update just by a simple EFI update. *Get on it Apple!*

  • Can my macbook pro support 8gb of ram?

My computer has started to lag a little bit, so i was thinking of upgrading the ram from 4gb to 8gb.
Here are some facts about my MacBook Pro:
2.4 Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
    4gb Ram currently installed
    running on Lion
    2 years old
I am thinking about putting this ram in:

Thanks for the help and advice !

I don't know because the only info they provide is a part number. You would have to go to the mfgr.'s website to find out the actual specification. It appears to be OK but I would get the real specs for it.
I would consider it wiser to trust my RAM purchases to OWC or DataMem. Brand isn't of any importance but the reliability of the vendor is. Be sure whatever you buy carries a manufacturer's lifetime warranty.

I am going to buy either a Mac Air or Mac Pro Retina 8GB RAM and 256GB. And as I have to still run Windows programs I will install Parallels 9. As the Mac are both 64bit machines does that mean I need to install Windows 7 64bit or just install 32 bit? (Going with Win7 as I hate Win8). And I will install Office Pro 2013 64 bit too or 32 bit or is that automatically selected by the underlying OS (I use Word, Excel and Access mainly for a membership database of a local club) ? I am not a power user so would appreciate advice on way to go

Again thank you.  If I only use word, excel and access in the Win environment and Mac OS for email and safari for internet do I need anti virus software . Ie my connection to the world is mac only and I use office pro only to ruin the club, newsletters, membership database etc. and of course anything I do there can drag/drop to the mac environ to email.  That's my understanding anyway.  Next will my existing .pst file copy directly into mac mail or do I have to runs translator  as I recall reading something about that ages ago when I started thinking Mac

Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities!
Yes, you can install Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit in your Mac using Parallels for Mac. Just follow the instructions of the virtualization programs during the install. Should you need any assistance with the installation process, I strongly recommend contacting Parallels Tech Support (you must register with Parallels in order to have tech support).
Alternatively, you can always use Apple's BootCamp if you want to run Windows natively in your Mac. Check their support page, Apple has a lot of good links explaining this solution.
    Hope this helps!

    RAM = Random Access Memory
the 4GB you quoted is your system memory, people say get as much as you can as it attributes to the performance of your system with major impact.

  • Mac Book Pro with 8gb RAM

Can I have my ran upgraded at a local Apple Store? Or the only way to buy a Mac Book Pro with 8gb RAM is online?

In Milan, Italy, they did for me at the Apple Store.
They took out the original 4GB and installed 8GB. the 4GB were discounted at full price because I did it before going out of the store. If I remember correctly -200€ for the 4GB and +400€ for the 8GB. This means 200 €
At the end is practical but may be more expensive if you discarge the 4GB and install non Apple 8GB, but this may invalid tha garanty... I am not sure about it but I prefer to stay on the safe side.
The difference could be not much. May be you find 8GB for only 140 - 160  €  but it will be difficoult to get more than 40-50 for the 4GB even if they are really new.

Which version of Logic? I have 9, but I've yet to install it. I'm just creating the images of the disks atm to install them on my Haswell. Will let you know how that performs.
Logic 10 would most certainly work fine though.
