MacBook Pro early 2010. has gray screen no login

Mac Book Pro, mid 2010 has solid gray screen, no apple logo or login option. Heats up — section under ports and along the back above vents. Fans have been going into overdrive. Horizontal pixelated screen with vertical bands. Safe reboot Shift-command-V has not worked. Understand this is a known problem with this model — Model A1286, (MC372LL/A). Any fixes?

Have done an SMC reset — yesterday. Seemed to solve the problem. Problem reappeared this morning. Fans were not running, Activities Monitor indicated no undo load on CPU , very low usage. Pixelated screen showed up while working, one program  (PowerPoint, text slides), replicated Safe Reboot, and did a PRAM refresh. Have tried this several times; always goes back to solid gray screen. Performed a Hardware Analysis last night, indicated no issues. Currently at work in Mexico City, no Apple Store or genius available, only resellers. This machine has been very well taken care of. Need for work, will be here another ten days.

  • My beloved MacBook Pro (mid 2010) has been the victim of water damage.

My beloved MacBook Pro (mid 2010) has been the victim of some water damage.  They cleaned and dried it out at Apple.  Now it turns on, the fan runs, the Apple logo screen pops up, and then it shuts down immediately.  Is this repairable, aside from the $1200 flat rate repair, or am I SOL?  Any ideas where to start or troubleshoot?  Any diagnoses?

It is better to spend money on a new MacBook Air or MacBook Pro.
    Liquid damage is progressive.
    Best.

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

My (early 2011) MacBook Pro has 4 gig of memory and is using all of it and running slow.  I am planning to double memory, but any ideas about why it's using all that memory?  (Yosemite 10.10.2).

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

  • MacBook Pro (June 2010) freezing with screen turned off (not sleep)

    Hi.
This issue has happened to me two times now. I recently bought a Macbook Pro 13 inch and the problem has happened when I let the computer sitting there without moving anything with its lid opened, after like 20 minutes when i'm going to use it again it has the screen turned off, the fan on and the indicator light half way on constantly but anything would respond, to use it again I have to hold down the power botton until it turns off.
It was not sleeping because I have the sleep timer set to never, what I do have on is the sleep display timer to 15 minutes.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Please help!
Now I got this then of turning it back again and a 3 min loading of the OS.
What could it mean, I don't know how to read this please

I have two problems with my 2012 13” MacBook Pro.
    Gray screen shows at startup
    Randomly disconnects from network.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

First, open Terminal in your Utilities folder and paste this into the prompt line:
    sudo update_dyld_shared_cache
Press RETURN. You will be prompted to enter your admin password which will not be echoed to the screen. Press RETURN again.
Next, boot the computer into Safe Mode.
    Next, do the following:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. • Macbook Pro boots to blank gray screen and cursor

    Hello,
I downloaded the "time machine update" and now my macbook pro will not boot, it stops at a gray screen and cursor.
I have tried safe boot, Disk Warrior, clearing NVPRAM or whatever.
    Any ideas on anything else?
Question, how long does a time machine restore take?
    Thanks

Assuming the TimeMachine updte came from Apple correct?
Disconnect the TM drive and any other hardware to return the machine back to factory as possible.

  • Why is my macbook pro stuck on the gray screen?

I turned on my macbook today and tried to turn it on, only to find out that it decided to stay on the gray screen for quite a while. I have tried to re-boot the system quite a few times, but nothing has helped. I then googled my situation to find a solution. I came across a post from someone who recommended holding down command + V and the power button. A black screen then appeared with a bunch of white writing. I haven't touched it because i dont want to mess it up any more that i already have. PLEASEEE HELP ME!!! Thank you!!!!

Just take it to the apple store. Same thing happened to me and they fixed it by going on the black screen but dont mess up with that screen let them fix it.

  • How can I put my old Macbook Pro early 2010 audio on my new Samsung HDTV?

I bought a Macbook Pro in March 2010 that does not support HDMI audio. So, when I am plugging my Macbook Pro on my new Samsung Series 5 5500 HDTV with a HDMI cable that supports audio, I am getting the image, but no audio. When I go to System Preferences there is no choice of Samsung TV as audio output, which makes sense since my Macbook Pro is too old (only mid-2010 Macbook Pro supports HDMI audio).
I then bought a 3.5mm to RCA cable and linked my computer via the headphone jack to the only composite audio plug I have at the back of my TV (see the picture below). I was expecting this setting to work perfectly fine but actually I am not getting any sound from my TV.
I know that some people are using a cable with two 3.5 mm male ends to connect the Macbook Pro to the TV, but my TV does not have any input for a 3.5mm cable (which is strange since the TV is quite new).
Is the only solution to get audio from my Macbook Pro on my HDTV would be to buy a new Macbook Pro or there is another alternative?
Thanks a lot for any hint!

    Hi B,
It looks like you'd have to run component video in order to use the RCA inputs that go with the component inputs. Notice there is no separate audio input with the HDMI port.
A work-around would be to run the RCA audio to a receiver/amp and through its speakers. Still another way would be if you had a receiver/amp which allowed you to combine RCA audio with HDMI video, then you could run the HDMI, now carrying both audio and video, to your TV's HDMI input.

  • Can I use External Display on a Window 7 64bit 13" Macbook Pro Early 2010

I have a 23" LED LG Monitor , It has VGA Cable , RCA Cable and HDMI Plug (but no wire). I am asking now if whether I should need a VGA Cable or a RCA Cable or a HDMI cable. I know there's the Apple Mini DVI to VGA Adapter. Should I get that? And does window 7 64bit professional bootcamp support any external display? If not , is there another way to get it working.

You should be able to hook it right up just like if it was a "normal" Windows Laptop.
Windows would be the one to set it up with. Make sure you've updated Boot Camp.
You probably should use an "Apple Mini Display" port -to- HDMI adapter as that should give you more display options, etc. (I'm not sure how high the 13" can go on resolutions, HDMI or VGA may not matter?)
You MAY have to use a separate sound cable between the laptop and monitor as some HDMI -to- (whatever) adapters don't carry the sound signal via an "adapter".
The next choice would be a Mini Display port to VGA adapter.
You may want to also ask this question in the "Computing Hardware/MacBook Pro" area as they may have more info?

Hi, I have been trying a variety of recommendations to see why my MacBook Pro seems to be having slowness issues.  yes, I took it in to the Mac store and they found nothing.  I have tried some other things that I think may have helped but now I see that specifically the cursor goes crazy when the fan kicks in and when the fan goes off it is okay again.  I have run SMART Utility & I didn't see anything from that.

The fans coming on and the cursor going crazy are a correlation, not a cause-and-effect.
The fans come on when measured temperatures inside your computer are getting too high. The fans come on to try to exhaust the excess heat. If the cursor goes crazy at the same time, this is likely to also be caused by the computer getting too hot, not by the fans.
    This is one possible cause:
Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performance, and increase heat and fan activity

  • MacBook Pro Mid - 2010 has question mark folder and block sign at start up could I get apple care and apple will fix it

I need information ASAP on what I should do with my MacBook Pro , am I able to just give apple the money for the apple care cost and they'll fix problem

It's too late, at this point, to get AppleCare, unless you purchased the machine on or after February of 2011 - and then you'd only have a few months, at best, of extended warranty.
The best thing that you can do is to either diagnose the symptoms and fix the machine yourself or take it into an Apple Store or AASP and have them diagnose and fix the problem(s).
If your profile is correct and you're running 10.5.8 then you should get disc one that came with your machine and boot from it and run Disk Utility's Verify and Repair commands on your hard drive. If it fails, you'll know that the problem is most likely with the hard drive.
    Good luck,

  • Home Sharing issues with MacBook Pro Early 2010

I'm having problems with home sharing. I can't connect to my MacBook Pro(Lion 10,7,2) library using my iPhone or iPad. My PC(Windows 7)  connect without problems, but with my MBP the iPhone 4 or iPad 2 fall in infinity load(both with iOS 5),
I tried format my MBP. After formatted, I was able to use home sharing in MBP, few hours later the home sharing stopped working.
This problem isn't only with home sharing. I can't connect to a FTP server, use AirVideo, AirPlay, share files in network....
I have already called to Apple Brazil, but they don't know what's Home Sharing.
    Does anybody can help me?

    Hi,
Face Time works in Snow Leopard.
EZ Jim (A fellow Poster) tells me that the Original blurb for the Beta version said 10.6.4 at least.
The Current version is purchasable through the Mac App store and that should have been placed on your Snow Leopard Dock some updates ago.
I have the beta Installed on a 2007 MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard. (Internal iSight Camera version 1,1)

  • OSX 10.8.2 made battery life on macbook pro early 2010 even worse

After upgrading to mountain lion, like everyone else I noticed that my battery took a hit but from what I could tell I lost about an hour's worth of time at the most when I used to almost 6 - 7 hours. Now that I have upgraded to 10.8.2 my battery life is much, much worse. I just charged my macbook to 99% and then unplugged it. I have the screen at half brightness and the batter monitor is telling me that I have 2 hours 30 min of life and I can see the % dripping away even in the short time that I am looking at the monitor.
I can't even put the lid down on my macbook at night and leave it that way till the following morning as the battery drains completely. In the past it would stay in this dormant state for days even.
I thought 10.8.2 was meant to resolve the situation, not make it worse. Is there anything at all that I can do apart from shutting down all my apps all the time?

Have you all tried some of the trouble shooting basics?  Reset SMC?

I'm ashamed to say "No" I hadn't tried any such basics!  I have now, and with some sucess.  After a SMC reset I have new figures...
    Battery Health:         90%
    Battery Charge:        99%
    Time Remaining:      4:07
Now that looks much better.  I can't say with 100% certanty that it was the SMC reset that resolved the issue as I did discover process that was running and chewing up huge amounts of CPU.  The KiesViaWiFiAgent application was responsable.  I of course killed this off and the CPU also resumed normal operation.  I have also deleted the app as I never want to see it running again.
