Macbook Rev 2,1: Shutdown on battery power problem

Problem: The battery is fully charged but the system will shutdown after about 1 or 2 seconds on battery power. This will happen if the system is already turned on or if it is starting with the power off.
When I removed the battery I noticed that while it still fit into the macbook's housing, that it was not fitting as designed. The battery was either larger or warped beyond something close to normal. I base this assertion on the fact that locking the battery into place was not smooth as expected, even with the battery being firmly held in place to line up the 2 locking tabs with the indents on the battery.
The problem has been noticed over the last day or two. It's worth noting that recently the LED on the magsafe connector has at times turned off recently as well. I actually became sure of there being a problem when I disconnected/reconnected the magsafe connector to see if the LED would relight (it did)
The battery is above its normal or average temperature, but not dangerously hot. I haven't tested with any kind of thermometer but it is worth noting.
Please take my word that the battery is fully charged and that this is not a software issue. Additionally I have updated to 10.4.10, read about similar problems (including on these forums), and pursued standard 'fixes' such as resetting the PRAM, NVRAM, and PMU, running applejack, etc. just to be certain.
Why I am posting if I already think I know the problem:
I am confident that I have correctly determined the cause of the problem. However this is my first Mac. I have helped friends with their Macs for years, but this is my first personal experience with the Apple warranty. I abstained from buying Applecare at the time of purchase, but because of my first problem I will be purchasing the extended 3 year warranty.
I am asking for advice on the best manner of proceeding. I live in Vancouver, BC Canada and I will not be making a trip across the border to Seattle just to visit an Apple store. I know from the web that there is a community of reputable Apple dealers in Vancouver.
I can't phone Apple because I have not yet bought the extended Applecare. Apple does provide a list of local authorized dealers who can handle warranty work.
My concern is that I will have to ship off my laptop (which still works perfectly when plugged in) and then wait for a predictable result. Ideally I would like to bring the macbook in, have it inspected, a new battery ordered and then keep the macbook with me while I await the battery delivery at which time I could swap them. I have read of others who have been able to do this at their local Apple store and would appreciate any advice to make this a positive experience.

Have you done the battery update?
If you have and still have problems you can call the apple contact number that is listed in the update. There is a link that has the Canadian numbers. They can help you get a new battery.
FYI in your specs you listed having a 2.16 GHz C2D. These just came out. Since yours is late 2006 it is probably a 2.0 GHz C2D.

If your model Macbook Pro is the calibrating model, let the battery calibrate.
If not, and are still under warrant or have Apple Care, give them a call and get a case number. Otherwise, take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP. Whichever is more convenient for you.

Macbook pro and Thunderbolt display on battery power no go.

I use my macbook pro mainly on my desk with the thunderbolt display and its lid closed. While having the power adapter connected to the macbook everything works fine. When I disconnect the power adaptor and try to wake up the computer it comes to life for a few seconds and then goes back to sleep for good. I cannot use the thunderbolt display while having the macbook on battery power. That causes the issue of the battery not discharging which I am aware is pretty bad. Any advice is welcome. Thanks.

I kind of figured this out. The reason I wasn't satisfied was that without the power adaptor when you hit a button on the keyboard the monitor actually wakes up the computer, works fine for a few seconds and then puts the computer to sleep. That kind of proves that it does work, technically at least. The problem is going into sleep mode afterwards.
Anyway i guess it just doesnt work. Thanks.
ps. If there is a way of discharging the battery with software while the power adaptor was still on, would be great help.

Macbook Pro wont run off of battery power.

Hi, I love my macbook pro but suddenly it stopped working off battery power. The system and battery report a full charge but as soon as the power cord is removed my mac dies!

Your battery is on the way out. You might be able to get a new battery for free under AppleCare. There are known issues with Sony batteries (yours is one) that have been acknowledged by Apple. They extended the battery warranty to two years for Core Duo machines, but lots of users with C2D machines have also gotten free replacements. Details on that program are here:

The catch is, Apple spec is that a battery maintain 80% health for 300 cycles, and your cycle count is 317. 80% health for you would be a full charge capacity of 5000 mAh, and you are under that by a bit. Apple considers batteries to be 'consumables' and thus they aren't covered by the warranty if they fail due to 'normal use'. Nevertheless, others with your symptom and up to 400 cycles have reported getting free batteries.
So, I would contact AppleCare or visit an Apple Store. Be polite but firm. It may help to bring in a printout of the linked page, as some Apple 'geniuses' are apparently unaware of this issue.

Macbook randomly shuts off while on battery power.

I have a 13-inch Macbook, Late 2008 model, using iOS Mavericks. While on battery power, the laptop will randomly just turn completely off, despite still having plenty of battery power left. I know it's not a calibration issue where the battery is dead but appears to have charge left, since I'm able to turn the computer back on again and continue using it.

First try the SMC reset appropriate for your model: Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
The information you posted says "Condition: Service Battery" - that likely means you will need a new battery sooner, rather than later, especially if an SMC reset doesn't help the situation at all.
In any case, when new, your battery likely had about 4400 mAh (milliAmphours) Full Charge Capacity.
The Full Charge capacity is down to about 60% of original capacity 2600/4400
A direct replacement from Apple is $129, installed.
Any popular search engine will provide a list of less expensive suppliers, but I cannot recommend any, simply because I haven't used any non-Apple replacement batteries recently. My single experience with one lower-cost supplier for my polycarbonate 2007 MacBook (replaced in 2010) was that the cheaper battery needed to be replaced again within a year. Your mileage may vary.

Macbook Pro powers off when on battery power

Help! My MBP 17" now powers off after a couple of minutes on battery power. When this happens, trying to boot again, the system will power off again while loading the OS. The only way to get the MBP to boot then is to plug in the AC adaptor.
I've reset the SMC and reconditioned the battery. Both the OS and the battery think the battery is fully charged. This didn't happen before upgrading to Leopard.

I believe the color of the magsafe was green and that it wasn't charging. (The MBP thought the battery was at 96%.)

Equium A100-338 - battery power problem

Hi,
My daughter has a Equium A100-338 bought in the UK 15 months ago, running Vista Home Premium. It has recently developed a problem with the battery life, which in theory should mean replacing the battery, but I'm not so sure!
The battery runs down quickly to say 80% 6 mins remaining, about 20 minutes after a full charge. Then putting it on charge it recovers to 100% in about 20 minutes. The laptop does get rather warm underneath, but I think that's probably normal, my other daughter's older Equium gets warm just the same.
Has anyone come across this issue, or is it just that it needs a new battery? I would have thought it should have lasted longer, as the other Equium's battery is still going strong and is a year older!

Hmm I think you battery is not dead and can be used much longer as you think.
I see youve got Vista on your notebook. This OS needs more notebook resources as the Win XP for example. This would also mean that the Vista preinstalled notebooks would run shorter on battery power as the notebook with Windows XP.
Last but not least the battery working time depends strongly on the notebook usage.
If you would play some games or would watch DVD movies then the battery would discharge faster.

Unexpected shutdown on battery power

I have a MacBook Pro 2007 "Santa Rosa" 15" 2.4 GHz (MA896LL A). In the three years I've owned it, I've gone through three batteries. Apple replaced the first one through their replacement program. My MacConnection warranty supposedly doesn't cover batteries, so when the second Apple battery failed, I bought a few third-party models, and one by one, these have failed. While I'm waiting for my NuPower replacement, I'm noticing that with a seemingly good battery at nearly 100% capacity, the computer shuts off with no warning after ten minutes. And it wont restart, even thought the indicator on the battery reads four green lights. With the MagSafe, everything is fine.
I really think there's more to this than battery issues. Why is there no warning before the shutoff? Why does this MacBook Pro destroy batteries? Since upgrading to Snow Leopard, the problem is much worse in that the shutdown happens much sooner. When I was back on 10.5.8, the same battery would last about an hour and then shut down (with no warning). Is there anything that can be down other than replacing the battery every half year? At least the NuPower was warrantied.

My niece had an original MBP, and went through I think 5 batteries in 3 years. I have the 17" Santa Rosa MBP, and I just now got my first replacement battery.
My guess is that there is some other problem that is causing the multiple battery failures, although I have no idea what it could be. It almost sounds like the connection of the battery to the logic board could be faulty, since you lose power suddenly even with a fully charged battery in "Normal" condition. If you are still under warranty, it might be worth trying for a diagnosis before the warranty runs out. Since resetting the SMC doesn't seem to help much, I wonder if the SMC chip itself is faulty?
Don't know what type of 3rd party batteries you have tried, but Apple and NuBattery seem to be generally reliable. I've been very pleased with the NuBattery I bought for my iBook. If you continue to experience battery failures, I would hazard a guess that it is not a string of faulty batteries, but rather some issue with your Mac.

MacBook shuts down spontaneously when on battery power

My 2.0GHz MacBook has started shutting down spontaneously after half an hour or so of waking from sleep. After it shuts down, when I try to reboot it it shuts down straight away after the boot sound.
Plugging the power cable in seems to allow me to boot, but it has also shut down randomly a couple of times whilst plugged in.
Is this enough of a problem to get an entire machine replacement? I also have the stain issue (early signs of unremovable stains after only two weeks with the laptop), the moo issue, casing around the screen that is loose and at least ten keys that sit on the keyboard at an angle with one that was broken from the day I opened it (the "." key no less).
Will I be able to get a replacement unit if I go to an Apple Store genius bar? I'm thinking either London, or Bluewater. I only ask because I have a conference that I need to report from in the next couple of weeks and can't afford to:
a) wait for repairs if I send it off to Apple
b) trust Apple to fix all the issues I have with the machine.
I want a complete replacement, that's the only way I have a guarantee this problem won't come back in the middle of an interview recording.

What do you mean with "shutdown"? If it powers off all of a sudden, without kernel panics or going through the OS shutdown procedure, then it must be somehow related to the hardware.
I had a similar behaviour (random power offs and inability to restart my MB for a while) after installing two new RAM modules. I noticed that putting back the original modules solved it so I inserted the new modules paying more care and eventually everything started working properly.

All I can tell you now is that it looks like it is off after I shut down, but the LED below the screen keeps fading in and out and never goes out. I did not make certain that all applications were closed before I shut it down

Head scratcher--new HD, macbook won't boot on battery power

I needed a larger hard drive because the orig 60gb was getting full. replaced with a seagate 250gb. now, macbook will no longer boot on battery power. works fine if plugged in. if unplugged while running, macbook goes dead. battery is fully charged.

What is the model number of the HDD you bought?
Next, make sure you have the battery in all the way and that the HDD is securely installed. Then try a PRAM and SMC reset by shutting down, unplugging the magsafe, taking out the battery, and holding down the power button for at least five seconds. Next, put everything back and hold down commmand-option-p-r at startup until it chimes twice then let go.
If none of that works put in the old HDD and see what happens.

If you talking about your screen getting little dimmer on battery than with power cord plugged in, that's normal. But if your screen flickers all the time, no that's not normal. I would say take it to an Apple store, and have them look at it.
My mac started to flicker after 6 months or so, I too thought it may be normal, but when I took it in for something else, they noticed it and got it fixed.

MacBook Pro (late 2011) suddenly won't power up

Was working with my MacBook Pro this evening, initially on battery power. Switched to AC when the battery was at 60%. An hour later it was nearly fully charged and I closed the laptop (without shutting down) and took it with me to a restaurant. Got back to work, opened the MBP up and...no power. MagSafe light flickers faintly; no battery indicators light when I hit the battery strength button. Tried an SMC reset and a PRAM reset to no avail. All this while I'm in a foreign country doing a project with a tight deadline.
I'm going to attempt to see an Apple reseller in the morning, but does anyone have further troubleshooting or diagnostic suggestions? Thanks.

MacBook Pro C2D shuts down instead of going to sleep (on battery power)

it happended the first time 2 days ago, today again: while my MacBook Pro is inactive on battery power the screen dims, then turns black like usually, but then it doesn't go to sleep, instead it shuts down. I have 10.4.8 installed, i didn't do the summertime update. I took a look at the log files (/var/log) but couldn't find something strange. Never had a problem using my machine...
anybody has the same issue?

When that happened to me a couple months ago with my Powerbook G4 it happened to be the battery itself. I did the apple battery exchange since there was a recall on my battery. I use my notebook primarily as a desktop replacement and hadn't noticed the problem until months later when I unplugged the notebook, seconds later the notebook would shutdown and even reset the system clock.
Applecare couldn't figure it out so I went to my friends house and swapped batteries to test and sure enough, when I put my battery into his computer, it shut his down and reset his clock.
Check the battery.
