MacBook Talking to me????

My computer started talking the other day. I dont know what I might have done to get it to do this but someone please help me and explain how I can get it stop.. its quite annoying... Thanks, B

Funny, because I accidently turned on the speech mode on my macbook today. I was trying to adjust the volume using the F4 and F5 keys, but I must have used the "control" or "command" key instead of the "fn" key. I'm pretty sure that's how I activated it. Finally figured out how to turn it off... same solution as offered above.

  • Macbook talks to tower, tower won't talk back

    I have two macs:
    1.) Macbook pro
    2.) 8 core tower
    *related info:*
both are equipped with the latest version of Leopard.
both are on the same network.
The Laptop is connected using airport.
The tower is connected to the same router as the laptop, with a cat5 cable connection.
    *The Problem:*
When using the tower, I cannot connect to my laptop via the network connection. But when I'm using the laptop, and I open finder, I can see an icon representing my main computer on the left. I can click that, which leads to pretty much any place I want to go on the tower.
However, I cannot do the same from my main tower to my laptop. I look on the finder window, but there is no icon representing the laptop there.
How can I make my tower talk to my laptop in the same way that my laptop talks to my tower?
Is this "AppleTalk?" If so, I have it enabled.
I remember setting them up to talk to each other when I first got them, but it's been a while and I'm not having any luck this time around. It used to work both ways.
    Thanks for your help.

  • EDU coupon + movers on Macbook *Talked to many people= nothing*

I tried to get my local best buy to stack the college student EDU coupon with the movers coupon on a macbook pro retina (SKU: 1581712) and they would not allow it. I tried to work with them and said ok, I will not use the EDU coupon, but only the movers coupon. But they did not allow me to use the movers coupon by itself because they said the macbook pros were a protected item.
Best Buy - Geary Blvd: Store 1125 - San Francisco, CA
I told them that many people have had this problem, but the social media specilists on the official forums always clarify the issue. However, it did not work.
    Thank you!

    Hello derekc5475,
These are both great offers and I am sorry you were denied the ability to take advantage of both of them toward your purchase.
As poprex shared, and as you seem to be aware, these promotions can be stacked with one another. Additionally, the MacBook Pro is not a price protected item and the Movers Coupon should be able to be used toward the purchase as well.
I have already passed along the necessary communication to the Geary Blvd. Best Buy (store 1125) leadership in regards to your situation and these promotions. You should be able to revisit this store to take advantage of these offers, and I recommend asking for a manager to assist you in the transaction.
Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns, and feel free to provide me with an update after your visit.

  • Best firewire cable for 2010 macbook pro 13 to new Seagate drive?

Hi. Have an old 2010 macbook pro 13" running OS 10.6.8. Have a friewire 800 port. Need to hook up to a 4 TB Seagate back up plus drive (http://www.seagate.com/in/en/external-hard-drives/desktop-hard-drives/backup-plu s-desk/) While the specs on the drive clearly indicate that it is firewire 800 compatible, I'm not sure which cable to get. I'm told there are different pins, so what exactly do i need to ask for, to make my ageing 2010 macbook talk to my new(ish) seagate back up drive via firewire? Also, if anyone out there knows where I can source such a cable in India, I'd appreciate the advice. Thanks.

As far as I know, there are 2 types of charging methods.
    1) Leave the charger attached to the MacBook Pro as frequently as possible. Basically the laptop is attached to the charger 24/7.
Leaving it attached 24/7 is not good - lithium-based batteries like the one in your MBP need to be used to maintain their health.
    2) When the battery reached 100%, unplug the charger and use it with the battery only. And when it reaches a certain level indicated to connect the charger, then charge it.
This is what I have. Currently, I am doing option 2 since that is how I think batteries work.
#2 is also not good. You are thinking of the older nickel-based batteries, for which #2 was best.
The 'best' option is somewhere in the middle - use your battery frequently but lightly, an hour or two on battery a day, for a total of 1-2 cycles per week.

  • New AP Express working but "ignored"

    hi,
Here's the basic problem - I've replaced an old Express with a new latest spec one on my existing network. The new one shows up in Airport Utility ok, and the green light on the top of the Express is on.
But when the two computers that are supposed to be using it access the 'net, the green light doesn't flash. So I'm guessing that these 2 computers are using the base station Express at the other end of the house, rather than the new one just a few feet away. (A quick trip downstairs shows the light on the downstairs Airport is flashing)
I can't see any settings in the setup utility as to which Airport any particular computer is supposed to access - I assume that it should just be the nearest one ???
Incidentally - is there some kind of update that I have to apply to the Airport Extreme cards in the mini and macbook to be able to use the faster speeds of the new Express?
And a bit more detail ...
All 3 Macs are on the latest OSX, and all recent updates.
Downstairs I have a G5 iMac and an older Airport Express (v6.3).
Upstairs I have a MacBook Pro and a single core Mac mini (1.5GHz), both of which used to connect to an older Express.
Both are set to participate in a WDS network.
    Both are on Channel 1
I've replaced the upstairs Express as the first part of a move to a faster network - I'm probably going to replace the downstairs Express with a Time Capsule.
I _was just using MAC codes as a way of restricting access to my network. I've now deleted all of those and turned Local Control off, and set up a WPA/WPA2 Personal password system.
Anyone have any ideas why the new Express is being ignored?
    thanks
    David

    Hi:
I just got mine working after cruising the forum and here is a summary of what I did.
The hardware: Linksys WRT54G router running dd-wrt, MacBook Pro, Airport Express 'n' firmware version 7.3.1 (originally, see below).
Setup: Airport Express plugged into the wall beside my stereo so I can use my laptop to wirelessly play sound through the stereo. Macbook talks to the router wirelessly, router talks to the AE wirelessly.
History: All of the same problems mentioned; loss of connection, doesn't seem to work etc. However, I always get reset to work. With it plugged in, use something to press and hold the reset button until it starts blinking amber (about 5 sec). This results in it coming up wirelessly with a default SSID.
Solutions: Connect to the unit to your network with an Ethernet cable and reset the unit. Launch the Airport Utility. Manually downgrade to 7.3 (not sure if necessary but it is working now and it wasn't before). To do this, hover the cursor over the version label on the summary page and open the window. It downloads and updates via the Ethernet cable.
Now go back to the Airport Utility (I find it needs to be closed and relaunched) and configure it as desired. In my case, I configured it to use WDS to connect to the Linksys Router (dd-wrt has this feature). To do this, you will need to set up the router first to get the MAC address for the link. On the Airport Utility, use manual configuration (you may need to reset the unit to get to default mode) and set it up for WDS and choose WDS remote in the WDS tab and enter the MAC address from the router WDS setup. I use MAC address control on my network and I don't want anybody sneaking in on the AE so I disabled 'allow wireless clients'. Also, it seems important that the router and AE be on the same channel (perhaps this is the ignore issue in itself). Update the configuration on the AE. Go back to the router and enter the MAC address of the AE in the WDS setup, save and poof, it works.
    Hope this helps.

  • Backup time when updating iPhone to IOS 5?

How long did it take for your iPhone/ iPads to finish the backup proccess??

Its becuase over the years of apple claiming that itunes is the anwser to all music problems they have cramed it full of **** and forgotten the point was in the first place. Lets not forget that itunes is nothing more than a directory program and is still slow becuase apple decided they must have their pointless glossy **** plastered everywhere.
Oh wait its ok they have realised this and now allow you to have iOS 5 so you never need to sync it with shity itunes again, but wait don't we need to update it first using itunes of course we do.
Apple tut tut. Your itunes program is cancer on my PC yerp not mac PC.
P.S. you need to sort out the gesture thing on the macbooks talk about ******* pointless. (you can acces the internet by performing a jutsu in front of it)

  • Airport reception fine but painfully slow

    Hi,
I've had my macbook pro for about 1 year now and just in the last week the WiFi at home is almost unusable (haven't tried it elsewhere yet). Reception is fine, all bars showing, but loading web pages is painfully slow, with the blue progress bar stalling, loading normally for a bit, then stalling again, and so-on until eventually I get a timeout or it has seemingly stalled indefinitely. Here's what I've done so far to isolate the problem:
    1. Windows PC has perfect internet access through the same wireless router.
    2. Connected macbook directly to DSL modem via ethernet cable, and internet access was perfect.
    3. Deleted the airport connection settings in System Preferences, then re-established the settings - problem didn't go away.
So I think this rules out a broken router and modem and also rules out a problem with the macbook talking to my ISP (and hopefully rules out any ID10T errors on my part). So I suspect the problem lies with the macbook.
I don't know what's changed recently to suddenly cause this problem, some updates maybe?
Anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this?
    Thanks

    "...(haven't tried it elsewhere yet)..."
    Do that. Then post back.

  • I have a MacBook Pro and have just switched from Windows, I would like to know if it is possible to download somehow my Collins Talking English and talking French Help please

I have a MacBook Pro opperating on Mavericks, Apple is all new to me having switched over from Windows, my question is, I have been unable to download my two COLLINS talking English and French, both worked well on Windows but will not  download on my MacBook, is there a method or way to download,  help please

I don't know these programs myself, but I suspect they are not written for Mac (if they are, it will say so on the packaging somewhere).  If they are Windows only, then your only alternatives are as follows:
You can use Boot Camp which comes with your Mac to install a copy of Windows on your Mac so that you can boot into windows and run this software via Windows.  This, of course, requires you to have a copy of Windows that you can install on the Mac. Copies of versions of Windows can be purchased via e-bay etc.
Alternatively, see if you can find similar software that is Mac compatible (this may be a cheaper option) on Amazon or other sites.

After downloading a new version of Firefox, my MacBook quit talking to my printer.  I've reinstalled printer software and run a Wireless Network Test Report & Configuration Page.  The printer still tells me that mly printer is off-line.  Has anyone else had this problem?

What version of OS X?  From where did you get the software for your printer?  Was it labeled as being compatible with your version of OS X?

  • HP Photosmart C4599 will no longer talk to my MacBook wirelessly -- Help?

After downloading Firefox new version "4" my MacBook and my printer do not talk to each other.  Have done just about everything to fix -- HP Configuration Page, Wireless Network Test Report.  They all say nothing is wrong.  However, I still cannot print.  Has anyone else had this problem?

Let's make sure your OS X is healthy:
    1. Download and install OS X Combo Update.
    2. Download and install HP printer drivers from Apple.
Finally, get the latest software for your printer from the "Support & Driver" link at the top of this page.

  • Imessages on macbook not working. All contacts/conversations that used imessage are now switched to google talk/jabber.

imessage on my macbook has always had a few bugs...it never recieved imessages sent from other friends with iphones right away, maybe upon next start up it would, but the messages would all come out of order.  It could send out messages that would then also show up on my iphone 5s.
As of today, all my conversations that were going on my imessages no longer have the contact names associated with them, just the phone numbers, and they show as offline.  The text field shows that the conversations are in Google Talk (which is offline) but each of those phone numbers is associated to someone I know with an iphone and they should be imessages, not google talk buddies.  I don't even have all those numbers stored in my google accounts.
I have tried altering settings both on my phone and my laptop so that only my imessages account is logged in or active and have deselected google talk, but none of the contacts come back up.  Icloud is set to sync contacts with my phone and with imessages.
How can I get my contacts back under imessages?

    Hi,
I have seen this with a actual Jabber account that was using Facebook chat as the Buddy list.
This seemed to loose the Real Names from the Contacts app  even though the details still seemed to be in that app.
The issue was traced in that case to an issue with the Facetime server (the Facebook Chat server is supposed to check with the main server and uses this to verify "real names" and this can bypass the Mac's own Contacts app if you are not syncing with Facebook.

  • HP Envy 120 printer and Macbook Pro won't talk to each other...

    Hi
I have a shiny new printer and a fairly new Macbook Pro and simply cannot get my printer to 'talk' to my Mac.
The printer is connected to our home internet and the Internet report you can print off says everything is fine.
We have done the Apple > Software update etc to make sure the latest drivers etc are installed. (For info, we are on OS X 10.8.5). However, when we then try to print something, it comes up as no printer installed and there is no 'nearby printer' showing, which I believe should be showing there. (We have tried adding manually, too, using various settings and can't do it that way, either.)
When this didn't work, we downloaded the relevant driver from the HP site (to see if this would help, but it didn't).
After downloading the driver, we go through the installation process and what happens is that it doesn't have our printer listed and asks that we connect our printer. When we connect it, it recognises it and we then proceed. It then says your printer is now connected and you may remove your device. When we remove it, it then does not have any device listed and we cannot progress any further. Stuck in an infinite loop...
Also, firewall and security settings are fine.
I've also restored default settings on printer etc and started over a number of times.
Any help would really be appreciated.

Kodak has drivers for up to Mac OS version 10.7 on their website here:

Did you try downloading and installing them?

  • How do you make a MacBook Pro talk to an Epson printer?

    MacBook Pro
    OS X 10.6.8
    (Thinking about getting  another MacBook)
I had an Epson Artisan printer, got an Epson Workforce WF-3640 new in Jan, hardly used because I cannot make it do what I want it to do. Wireless connection is good.
With the MacBook Pro, the interface with the Epson printers is not what it used to be on the G4: no ColorSync, no 2-sided, no thick paper, none of those kinds of instructions appear on the generic printer control panel. Which by the way, bears NO resemblance to the Epson manual screenshots, and the instructions in the Epson manual are useless.
How do you make a MacBook Pro talk to an Epson printer? And by the way, I cannot use the scanner either. I have to set up a document to print, then when the printing progress box appears, click on the scanner icon.
    Also
Printer has 2 compartments. Top compartment #1 for all types paper.
Bottom compartment #2 for plain paper only.
I load glossy photo paper in #1, it prints plain paper from #2 even though I entered instructions on the control panel on the printer.

If you haven't done so already, try resetting the printing system.
