MacBookAir Disk Full - but my files aren't that big...

I have the 128MB MacBookAir which i recently bought whilst in the US, it is the most recent hardware and came with Lion installed originally.  Now, some 2 months on I find the hard drive is full, however my documents etc aren't that big:
     Audio 14.5 GB
     Movies 10 GB
     Photos 3.5 GB
     Apps 6 GB
     Other  85 GB
Clearly this "Other" is the problem.  Looking through Finder at "All my Files" I have around 30 documents etc ranging between 40KB to a max of 6MB, so I really don't know what this "Other" consists of. I can't find it to delete it, but it is getting in the way of my MacBookAir functionning properly; I have insufficient room to download updates.
Can anyone help?

i had the same problem with my 128GB hard disk MacBook Air too. I used Finder to identify that it's my Users folder that contained invisible folders or files excessive in sizes. They accounted for some 80GB of the hard disk while the sizes of files in viewable folders totaled less than 6GB (including music and photo files). The culprit folders and files must have been hidden within the Users folder, I concluded.
I downloaded TinkerTool successfully - be sure to download the corrrect version to match your Mac OS X version - and in thet General tab, I selected "Show hidden and system files", then I selected "Relaunch Finder" and using the relaunched Finder I was able to see a hugh hidden folder named "Library" within my Users folder. Probing further, I discovered hugh back up files in a "Back Up" folder within an "Application Support" folder inside the "Library" folder. The back up files numbered in the ten thousands, had cryptic file names, but were viewable by opening them with Textedit. I decided I don't need them and trashed the "Back Up" folder files to recover 70+GB.
I read from TinkerTool FAQ that the Mac OS X originated from NeXT so many of the advanced file management features have been "deactivated" for the general user migrating up to OS X from the previous Mac OS. The simplicity, cleaniness, and user friendliness have been retained. It thus takes the use of tools like TinkerTool to accomplish additional tasks at times.
Thanks all for the TinkerTool tips above! Just to share my own success story.

A MacBook will use Time Machine to make local backups so that when connected to an external drive it will backup a lot faster.
to disable this, you must use a command under terminal.
to locate terminal, do a search for it under spotlight (the magnifying glass on the top right corner), should be the first hit.
once under terminal, type the following text exactly:
    sudo tmutil disablelocal
    hit enter.
you will be asked to input your password, if you do not have a password, you will have to create one before performing this command. after entering your password, hit enter again and close terminal.
in a few minutes the space taken up by time machine should be cleared.

  • My computer is saying start up disk full, erase some files.

Hello I'm looking for help to fix my disk full problems.   I want to use an external hd. but not in the time machine way, which as i understand erases older things.  I want what I put on there to stay there.
Can anyone tell me how to check where the disk use is heavies so i can erase that part.   Any help with managing disk space would be much appreciated.

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

  • Help: Premiere is making my startup disk full, but I set everything to go on an external hard drive.

The iMac I am using is for the sole purpose of editing and nothing else. I have no idea what is making my startup disk full, and I can not locate the files that are filling the startup disk except the fact that it is telling me I am running out of space. The startup disk is a 250GB SSD, the second internal drive is 1 TB HDD. All of my premiere and video files are loaded ton a 4TB G-RAID.

Do you have your projects set to use a drive other than startup?
My 3 hard drives to edit AVCHD are configured as...
    1 - 320Gig Boot for Win7 64bit Pro and ALL program installs
2 - 320Gig data for Win7 paging swap file and video project files
When I create a project on #2 drive, the various work files follow,
so my boot drive is not used for the media cache folders and files
3 - 1Terabyte data for all video files... input & output files

  • IPhotos doesn't show photos anymore, but iPhoto file is 30 Gb big.

    Hello,
my probelm is that when i klick on the iPhoto fiel, it opens the file and than says no fotos. It changed from one day to the next. I hade my libery on a other harddisk, but it allways worked. Now I have the 30gb big file but I can't get the pics. Does anybody has the same problem or nows a way to get beck my pics?????

Thanks LarryHN for responding to the OP's question. Your answer solved the problem I had been having and I'm a lot less anxious about my digital images now.
But now I have two questions that I'm hoping someone can answer:
    1. I downloaded some new images while my iPhoto was not using the right library. Using the alt/opt key, iPhoto is now pointed to the right library the majority of my images appear. But where are the ones that I downloaded while it wasn't pointed at the right library? I searched my hard drive for another iPhoto library and couldn't find anything?
    2. A related question, I have some images that I KNOW are on my computer as I can see them in Finder. The location for them is given as iPhoto library/data/2008/July 28. But, they do not show up in iPhoto. Anyone know where I can find them to import them?
Thank you so much for any help!

  • Time Machine Disk Full but won't delete older backups?

My Time Machine has worked since day one. And when my 1TB disk gets full, it deletes the older backups and makes room for new ones.
However, since last week, it tells me there is an error, the disk is full, and I need to make room for XXXX amount of gigs before the back up can be completed.
    Why is this happening now?

  • [10g - XE] Why is my disk full of trace files?

Just in case there's another silly person like me out there who encounters this problem...
I have XE 10g installed on my local machine (Windows XP), as my own personal test environment.
My computer was acting really weird yesterday, then today I got an error while using Excel that my disk was full.... and after some investigating, I discovered that I have 39 GB (gasp!) of trace files! These are all located in the directory C:\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server\NETWORK\trace
...and some of them are quite large (obviously, since I have 39 GB of them...); one of them by itself is 2 GB.
Almost all of the files are named like: sqlnet_trace.txt_3132_1.trc And, for example, I already have 5 trace files from today, totaling 15 MB.
I vaguely recalled setting my trace level to 16 or SUPPORT a LONG time ago, and funny thing, I couldn't remember changing it back to OFF.
So, if you've been silly like me, check your sqlnet.ora file, and set TRACE_LEVEL_CLIENT=OFF

Thanks for the tip. I checked listener.ora, and it doesn't appear that any trace files are enabled there. I don't know what Net manager is.
At least in this case, the server/database is just my personal PC, so the only person it impacted was me. It took 7 months for the trace files to grow to that size with just me using the database, so I can only imagine what it would do to a database in an actual environment.

  • Backup disk full but Time Machine wont over write?

My Seagate Drive is full, and I get a report every day that the drive is full.
I understand that Time Machine should delete old files to make room for the new Backup.
Any suggestions to get this problem solved would be appreciated.
I can not see any options in Time Machine that can be changed?

See #C4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If that doesn't help, please clarify what's going on.  See #A9 in the same link for what we need, and how to get it.

  • HD full but few files visible

    Hello all,
I've recently decided to switch off FileVault in order to allow Time Machine to be used to its fullest, but found that I needed to free up about 80GB on my laptop's HD first.
I did this by moving my iTunes folder from Music to an external HDD. I also did the same with my iPhoto Library.
When the FileVault process was finished I attempted to copy the folders back to my computer to no avail. I also tried to import the library into iTunes, but while this appeared to work, and I was able to manipulate iTunes for the period it was still open, once I shut down and restarted there was nothing there.
The photos are fine, but there's no music anywhere to be seen no matter where on my computer I look. Despite this my HD is now full to the level I'd expected it to be at.
I erased the free space on my HD as I thought there may be some errors, but it hasn't helped.
    Any clues? I'm lost.
    Thanks,
    James

I have no idea what you are looking at, except it is hidden because of the name. However, you can probably open it to examine the contents using the Finder's Go menu, select "Go to Folder..." and then type in the path to the folder. If it is directly in the Users folder, you would type in:
    /Users/.de0022.002
Then press the Go button. If it truly is a folder (and with that strange name I'm not sure that it is) it should open and you can decide what to do with the contents.

  • Time Machine: disk full (but doesn't self erase old backups?)

    Hi everyone.
I am trying to do my backups with Time Machine (TM).
My HD is 1TB, external HDD (for TM backups) is 2TB.
After a few days TM tries to do new backups, but an error message pops up: "Too low space" in the 2TB HDD.
But does not TM automatically erases the oldest backups to free space for the new ones?
I do not want to eliminate some folders, because when the space will grow up I'll be in the same situation...
    Thank you for any suggestions.

  • Photoshop 7: "Scratch Disk Full" with a 1.T HD (too big?)

I bought a new 64-bit Windows 7 based machine with 8G of RAM and a single internal 1.5T HD (almost empty). The system is also hooked up to an external HD with 1T space (about half full). It uses a RAID system as well.
It installed fine. But when I try to run it, it starts the typical loading of stuff, then comes up with the message "Unable to initialize Photoshop, the scratch disks are full". What is frustrating is it then exits with no way of changing setting in Photoshop (say, to a smaller HD it thinks has space).
I this a known issue? Is there a cofiguration file I need to change manually?  Am I missing a patch? In any case, whee is the layest Photoshop 7.0.1 patch for downloading?
    Thanks!

There are several recent posts on this.  PS 7 will not recognizea 1T disk, as it never existed in those days.
Bellieve solution was to create a disk partition of x mb for it to use.  Easy to do with Vista, should be same with Win 7.

  • CFX_Image seems to resize ok but the file size is too big??

    my host uses CFX_IMAGE v1.6.6.11 (
    http://80.79.138.227/cfximage/index.cfm
which does a perfectly good job of resizing images except for
the fact that the resultant file size is too large. i found that
compared to resizing images locally, resizing using this tag
resulted in file sizes of double the size.
i have tried tweaking the "quality" paramater but without
success, i could get the file size down but then the quality was
    poor.
so i am forced to resize images locally using macromedia
fireworks or MS paint before uploading them.
ideally i need to be able to resize images server side but
    without inordinate file sizes.
does anyone else use a cfx_image tag that's more efficient?
or does anyone else know how to get this tag to perform better?
any help would be very gratefully received.
    thank you
