Mail behaving weirdly

Mail has started behaving a bit weirdly since yesterday. Graphics are not shown any more. When I try and check things on Preferences Mail stops responding and I have to force quit. Everything was working up to yesterday. I haven't updated anything. Mail is version 2.1.3
Any ideas? Thanks

Restart your mac:
Safe Boot: Hold down the shift key after the chime until the Apple logo appears and the gear is moving.
It will take awhile but you will be asked to login.
Go to your Applications folder> Utilities and launch Disk Utility.
In the left side column, highlight your drive and repair permissions.( button down below).
From BDAqua:
Quit Mail, then In your home folder, try moving this folder & file to the Desktop then reboot...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail
Move to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
Mail will ask to import your messages. If all goes well and Mail is fixed trash the files on the desktop.

  • N770 behaving weird

A couple of years ago I got a second hand N770 from a friend and I have been using it frequently and satisfactory. However, for the last couple of mounts it is starting to behave weird, as if it is degrading.
    Symptoms:
It is very difficult to establish a WiFi connection. Most of the times it wrongly reports that no APs are available, or fails connecting to one. Sometimes it reports nearby APs with a very low wignal while in fact the signal is very strong.
Connection failure is reported after 5-10 seconds, long before a potential DHCP timeout. Once a connection is established it is stabl and behaves normally.
Spontaneous reboots, most often when connected to the charger. Sometimes I connect it to the charger and it reboots within a couple of minutes. Sometimes it just keeps rebooting.
I suspect the battery but given the charger-reboot issues I'm not sure enough to buy a new battery,
Does anyone recognize this behaviour? Any tips?

My 770 (there's no N) used to reboot fairly frequently too.. I believe this wasn't totally uncommon and was just bugs in the hardware / software that were never fixed.
My device stopped connected to my wireless at home a few years ago.. I found out that there seemed to be a maximum number of APs the 770 could cope with.. as more and more of my neighbors got wireless broadband at home, the number of APs I could see went through the roof.. eventually the 770 just gave up connecting..
This was after I got an N800 so I wasn't too fazed..
Your device is getting on a bit.. the OS was pretty beta for the whole of the 770's life.. I wouldn't be surprised if the hardware was degrading..

  • Lion mail behaving badly

    Hi all,
I just got my wife a a Core i3, 3.06Ghz 21.5" iMac. I bumped it to 8MB of RAM as she never remembes to quit anything. I updated he to Lion after using it for a week and finding no problems on my machine. As of late Mail has started to behave very strangely. After responding to one or two e-mails without problem in the next e-mail she responds to the charachtersshe's typing apper on screen with more and more of a lag until she can be three or four lines ahead of the on screen text. The problem doesn't happen all the time and she can't, so far come up with a definite way of replicating it consistantly. The responses that have this problem also can be very slow to send, with the general "rainbow" spinning system cursor and not the gray spinning "working" icon spinning next to the mailbox, that you usually get when the ISP is being slow. This again is not consistant. I could not replicate either problem when I tried it. She has probably 30 smart mailboxes that she uses for student mail in her various teaching jobs, is using the "classic" setup. She is composing in "Rich Text" with the spell as I type feature turned on, is using Helvetica as the font but has changed to Times to eleiminate any weird font corruption problems. She never had a problem in 10.6 on her old iMac or on this one. She also ran mail on 10.7 for a week or so with no noticible problem.
Any ideas where to even start? I'm not familiar with Mails preference files and can't delete anything that will mess with her smart mailboxes, as losing them would be a disaster for her. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

    Some things to consider.
Create another admin account and see if the same thing happens in that user account.  If not, then you have a problem in the primary user account.
I am assuming you zapped PRAM and did an SMC reset, plus unplugged all periphals for awhile.
If the machine recently started acting this way, look at recent installs.  If it has acted like this since you installed 10.7.2 you might reinstall using the combo update or install the 10.7.3 combo update.
You can also reinstall Lion and not lose your data.

  • Mail behaving wired

Today my Mail app starting behaving very wired.
On my Mail Icon on the dock it shows that I have 2 new messages but when I check there is nothing new. And that happens like every 5 min. it shows 2 new messages but nothing there.
Any suggestions on how to fix this?
    Blue skies!!!
    Jerry

    Wired? Do you mean weird?
What type of mail account is this (POP, IMAP, .Mac)? Do you have any custom rules?
If this is an IMAP or .Mac account, try disabling all the rules and rebuilding the mailbox afterwards, i.e. select it in Mail and do Mailbox > Rebuild.

  • Mail using weird default account for new mail

I recently upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion, and am having some trouble with Mail.
I have five email accounts: Comcast, two Gmail-based and two on an independent company's servers (Pair Networks).
When I'm in one of my inboxes and send a new email, the sending account is set correctly to that of the selected account. Likewise, if I respond to an email the sending account is set correctly.
BUT - if I am anywhere else and send a new email - unified inbox, local folder of filed mail, etc. - the sending account appears as a sixth option that doesn't exist in my settings anywhere. The dropdown to select a sender account now shows six options instead of the usual five, and this is the last one, and is selected.
The email address for that account happens to be the same as one of my accounts, but the name shown is strange.
    The original account reads like:
    Firstname Lastname <[email protected]>
This weird sixth account reads like:
    "Firstname Lastname (s)" <[email protected]>
    - adding quotes around the name and a parentheses s at the end of the name.
The original account is not the first in the list, nor the last. It is second. The first is a Gmail account - not sure if that is relevant.
iCloud is not enabled for Mail - all my devices do their own connecting to mail.
Soooo.....hmmm. What do folks think? Is there somewhere I should be able to set an overall default account, when a sending account can't be determined based on the selected folder?

    "Account of selected mailbox"
The bogus account doesn't appear in the list. The original (Firstname Lastname <[email protected]>) does appear, as the second option in the dropdown list.

  • Photoshop behaving weirdly (help please!)

Photoshop noob here!  Any help would be appreciated.  The more I use Photoshop cs6 (64 bit) on my computer the more weird behavior starts to occur.  The first time I installed it started out fine like usual.  Then out of the blue opacity started behaving strangely.  Even when I turned a color to 100% opacity and layed it on top of another color in the same layer it would not be completely opaque.  I could still see the shapes/lines through the supposedly 100% opaque color.  I searched the internet and couldn't find a solution.  I kept coming upon the suggestion of reseting all the tools which did not work.  When told to delete my photoshop preferences (the psp file) both manually and by using the CTRL-SHIFT-ALT  shortcut when starting photoshop the former launched photoshop and then resulted in a "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document." error.  I could only click ok and continue working on my messed up version of photoshop.  Secondly, the ctrl-shift-alt shortcut did not work at all.  Fed up, I deactivated and uninstalled, then reinstalled Photoshop.
It worked perfectly fine for a while and then different strange behavior started happening again.  First, the eraser behaved like a blue brush in the background layer.  Instead of erasing white and seeing the checkerboard pattern like I always used to it would just color blue instead.  I could do this at different opacities as well.  On the background layer it is essentially a blue brush.  This wasn't super annoying as I could just add another layer but then my pressure sensitvity stopped working on my tablet too.  I downloaded all the latest tablet drivers to no avail.  I again was told to try deleting my prefernces which again resluted in the "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document." error.  Also the ctrl-shift-alt shortcut still doesn't work.
I've looked everywhere for a solution and still cannot figure out why Photoshop continues on this self-destructive path.  Any help would be appreciated. Again, I'm new to photoshop so if the answer is extremely obvious then sorry!

Resetting preferences is first aid for PS.  Uninstall and reinstalling will not fix an error in this file.
You need to start PS and immediatley hold down the ctrl alt shift keys (assuming Windows OS) and you will get a reset window.  If you are not fast enough you will see the splash screen.  Some find help in pressing and holding 2 of the keys, start PS and immediatly hold down the 3rd key.

  • Mail IMAP weirdness (duplicates, not downloading)

    Hi there,
I've used the Mac Mail app very happily for several years now, at home and at work, to access both my .Mac email and my work-based IMAP mail.
Last week, our IT team moved my email account to a new mail server, and ever since, I've been experience very very weird and intermittent problems receiving and reading my IMAP mail (the .Mac mail is fine).
    These problems manifest as:
    * On startup, it sometimes takes many minutes before new messages are displayed in my Inbox. Sometimes they will appear and disappear several times before 'stabilizing'. Frequently, messages that I have already read will disappear and reappear as 'new'.
    * Occasionally, and with no warning, some messages will start to 'replicate' themselves..I can end up with multiples of 5 or 6 of some messages (but not all) in my Inbox.
    * Occasionally, I am simply unable to view a message. The message appears in my Inbox, but when I try to open it I see a message telling me I need to go online to download the contents of the message, even though I am online. Sometimes when I'm trying to open one of these messages, the account seems to flicker offline and online and offline again.
There seems to be no rhyme or reason to this. It's intermittent and unstable. The IT guy insists it must be the Mail app (I'm the only Mac user), but everything was fine before...
    Suggestions? Settings I can check?
    Thanks.

    Hi LeahMac.
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list. Leave checked (enabled) only the port configuration needed to connect to Internet and Built-in Ethernet (in that order if not the same), uncheck (disable) the rest of network port configurations and see whether that helps — if it doesn’t, turn ON again the ones you want enabled.
Try using a different method to connect to Internet, if possible, or connecting the computer to Internet as directly as possible (i.e. bypassing any routers that might be present, using an ethernet cable instead of wireless, etc.), and see whether that makes a difference.
Do you have any custom rules? Try disabling all the rules and rebuilding the mailbox afterwards, i.e. select the mailbox in Mail and do Mailbox > Rebuild.
Do you have any Mail plug-ins or system utilities that could interfere with Mail? In the Finder, go to each of the following folders (if they exist). What do you see there?
    /Library/StartupItems/
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/
    /Library/LaunchAgents/
    /Library/InputManagers/
    /Library/Mail/Bundles/
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/
    ~/Library/InputManagers/
    ~/Library/Mail/Bundles/
To make accurately reporting this information easier, you may open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal, type the following command (you can just copy it here and paste it in Terminal), and press <Return>. You can then copy the output of that command from Terminal and paste it in your reply to this post:
    ls -1 /Library/StartupItems /Library/LaunchDaemons /Library/LaunchAgents /Library/InputManagers /Library/Mail/Bundles ~/Library/LaunchAgents ~/Library/InputManagers ~/Library/Mail/Bundles
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

  • Command Tab Keyboard Shortcut Behaves Weird

    Hi,
I really need help with this as it is extremely frustrating. Ever since a couple of weeks ago (maybe due to the new osx update?) quickly tapping cmd-tab behaves extremely different. Before, if you tapped cmd-tab, it would alternate between your most recent used applications (so between two applications). For example, if you had safari, mail, and word open, and you have the window focused on safari, and pressed cmd-tab it would switch to mail, and press it again and it would switch back to safari.
Now, this doesn't happen--it keeps cycling forward! So even if you tap it (not hold cmd), it switches from safari to mail to word to safari..etc. This is extremely annoying when you have 15 apps open and you just want to switch between the two apps you are using frequently. Anyone know what happened/how to fix this?

If you have a Mac Mini, you just need a new keyboard.   Logitech, MacAlly, and Microsoft all make Mac compatible keyboards.
iOS is not running on your machine.   It is Mac OS X 10.7.4 you need to be selecting for your signature.

  • Is your Mail behaving oddly?

    Hi there,
I have a .Mac account. I have the following weird behaviours:
    1) When I read something, the email is not being marked as unread.
    2) Sometimes I can't delete what I have just read.
    3) it exaggerates the number of emails that are supposed to be in my inbox. (e.g. at the moment I am supposed to have 13 in my inbox, but I can only count seven).
    4) Now it won't show what is supposed to be in my Inbox (but is not saying that the application is not responding).
    5) I also appear to have gained a new .Mac account. which I want to get rid of but don't know how.
    Er, any thoughts?
    All the best and thanks,
    Luke

Mail.app is behaving oddly rather suddenly for me, too. But just like the other person I'm not having a problem similar to the one you describe. Instead the issue I have is an ability to quit the software. The only way to quit this app right now is to shutdown my computer. Otherwise, if you try quitting you get into a loop. The app appears to quit, but then after seeming to have quit for a few seconds, it opens itself again and the loop continues. No other problems have accompanied this. I've done no upgrades that might have lead to this.

  • Mail rendering weird sporadically

I'm having an issue (only in Mail not in other apps) where it does this:
    http://www.stuartsilverstein.com/images/weird-rendering.jpg
If I move the window a few times it goes away. Only happens in Mail, so it doesn't seem like a hardware issue. Totally baffled and a bit annoyed.
    Any ideas would be appreciated

Hi stupac5973 & welcome to the forums...
Try this - find the /Library/Preferences folder in your user/Home folder and then locate and delete this file:
    com.apple.mail.plist
*Caution* - doing this may clear your account settings so be sure to note those first in the event you are required to reconfigure, etc.

  • Mail acting weird and lost all emails yesterday

I live in Australia using the Telstra Bigpond internet services. Bigpond is a POP server (POP3 I think) and is in the process of migrating customers to the IMAP system. I am on the POP system.
I successfully, I thought, installed the Mavericks update and all seemed well until I noticed that when I went to collect my mail from the Bigpond server I would see the progress bar (for the incoming messages) flash quickly across the screen saying "10 of 10" but no messages were in my 'IN BOX'. I checked the Bigpond server and there were none sitting on the server and all had been delivered to my in box - supposedly!.
I thought I would test the outgoing and incoming by sending a test message and 3 of 3 were sent (I only sent one). When the message come back it came back in a flash as 6 of 6 but was not in my inbox at all.
I contacted Apple support (still working with them on this problem) and we made some changes to my junk mail settings and removed all 'Rules' and now the emails are coming in - I have lost a full days emails and don't know if I can get them back so far I can't. The mail program is still stating 3 of 3 incoming when just one message comes in or 4 of 4 when one is sent (the numbers being sent and received bear no relationship to the numbers coming in nor being sent and are completely, it seems, random.
I also have a 'flagged' message inidicated in the flagged box under the 'Inbox' but no message is there at all and I cannot remove the flag.
I have not done any changes to my mail program at all to create this problem that did not exist before I installed Mavericks and I have not attempted to try anything with iCloud mail before I can see a resolution to my laptop mail problems.
For information my 15" macbook pro is compatible with the Mavericks upgrade and I have no other obvious problems at this point that I can identify - Photoshop CS5 seems to be working OK and I have had no problems with the Windows 7 partition (bootcamp) after installing Mavericks. Just Mail at the moment.
Any thoughts on how I can remove the 'flag' for a non existant message and get the incoming and outgoing 'counter' to read accurately?
    Thanks

    Hi Tuttle,
I'm glad you are not experiencing the problem. However, there is NO confusion here - the numbers are random and do NOT represent the incoming or the outgoing numbers of messages as you would normally expect. This morning I got 195 of 195 and got no messages coming in at all! I have been using Macs for more than a decade and this has never happened before. This has only happened for the first time when I changed to Mavericks and is happening on both of my laptops (macbook air and Macbook Pro 15inch) - it is NOT the computer.
"To my eyes, the numbers we see in the Activity pane increase in increments of 1 with each message that is sent or received by a given mail account, starting with "1 of 1" after Mail is launched in any given session"  - of course this is what you would expect to happen.
If the problem doesn't exist for you then your comments, as well intended as they are, are not really going to help - it is a bit like me telling you it is raining outside but you are in a railway tunnel - what rain?  I am grateful for your contribution and interest so please don't take offence. The issue is known to Apple Techs - they tell me that they can see the same thing happening on their computers - and their explanation of why it is happening is somewhat frustrating and definitely not sitting well with me.
I suppose at the end of the day, if I get my emails I should not be too concerned but for those having this experience it is still a bit lame.
    Regards to all....

  • Unable to add iCloud IMAP mail. Weird error message.

    Hi there,
I just got my business mobile phone, a BlackBerry Z10 and wanted to add my iCloud services in the personal workspace. The contacts and calendar syncs just fine, however when adding the mail I get this error message:
    "command: b'CAPABILITY' => socket error:-Too many read 0"
Also when trying to add the mail account as a standard IMAP account, entering all settings according to Apple, I still get the error message once it wants to "saving and verifying your settings". I also tried various combinations of smtp ports (587, 25), SSL and StarTLS. Using username with or without the @me.com. Using @icloud.com instead @me.com,... etc. etc. Always get this error message.
Then I though perhaps the administrators blocked this functionality, however I was able to add my personal gmail account, which wouldn't have been the case if they would block private mails.
    Any help highly appreciated!
    Thanks, Christoph

    Hello,
I have used the procedure/settings described in the link hereunder on my Z10 and iCloud mail is working fine:
