Mail consuming excessive processor power

In the last day or two, Mail is consuming between 60-85% of CPU power according to activity monitor, causing the processor to run hot and the fan to cycle up to high.  Mail has crashed a couple of times, too.  I recently moved a lot of old messages to archives and synchronized all accounts.
I am currently running two accounts on Mail, iCloud and my work Exchange account.  My system admin at work reports no problems with the Exchange server.
Any help is appreciated!

Has this issue been resolved?  I'm having the same error and problem and would be interested to learn more.
Linc Davis... if it helps, here are the lines from Console before, during, and after deleting the cache.db file in com.apple.mail folder.  Mail is now working well at CPU% < 1% at idle and jumping up to 38% to fetch a new mail message.  This CPU% problem happens often.  Is there a way to resolve the issue or will this process of closing Mail and deleting the cache.db file have to be repeated regularly?
Thanks,
parasbuy22

  • Essbase Services is consuming excessive resource

    Hello,
We are using, believe it or not, Essbase version 6.5.7.5038 and seeing Windows Service Performance Issues. *Alert description: The 'Essbase Service' service on computer [SEVERNAME] is consuming excessive resource*
We didn't see the problem on the server until we had upgraded to version 6.5.7 from version 6.0.
Does anyone know how we can resolve this issue? We will upgrade to System 9 early next year but at this time we are not going to do the upgrade.
    Thanks

    Thanks for the response Jason....
    Answer to your question:
Has anything else about the system changed, besides just upgrading from version 6.0 to 6.5?
A - Yes, the whole system. We moved the Essbase database from one server to a larger new server.
Does the problem only come up after the system has been running for a certain amount of time, or right away?
A - Server running for a week at minimum and the problem seems to occur mostly at night when we load new data and re-calc the cubes.
How much memory is on the server?
    A - 8GB
Is there any other information about what type of resource it is that's being consumed?
There are 4 dual processors running on the box but it seems essbase only uses one at a time to process a task.
Is your server still functioning correctly as an Essbase server, prior to the error messages coming up,
or are some of the numbers off these days?
A - Server running for a week at minimum before the problem comes up. We then reboot and that seems to clear it for a while. The member useage seems to be high on the box but we will need to confirm if it get's release after the re-boot.
As for your comments regarding member names with periods in them needed to be quoted in calc scripts and such. That is something I'll need to look into. I know we have some
members with periods but I'm not sure if any of them are referenced in a calc script.
    Regards.

  • Firefox 18.0.1 consuming excessive CPU--both in Standard and Safe Mode--when accessing Gmail

Firefox 18.0.1 consumes excessive CPU--both in Standard and Safe Modes--when accessing Gmail (in Standard Mode). CPU consumption averages around 56% on my dual-CPU, Windows 7 desktop.
The only way to stop this from happening it to open Gmail in "HTML" mode. When I open Gmail in Standard mode, a "Loading..." status shows at the top of the page. After about 30 seconds, a error window pops-up within the Gmail page saying that there is a performance problem and provides the option to load Gmail in a limited, "HTML" mode. Clicking the HTML Mode link solves the issue. I've been using Firefox for years and have never seen this issue until now.

  • Apple Mail consuming lots of CPU

Since I've upgraded my MacBook Pro from Snow Leopard (10.6.8) to Mountain Lion Apple Mail has been behaving strangely – Activity Monitor shows Mail consuming about 100% CPU for hours at a time. Mail is often very sluggish at displaying messages. I've rebuilt my mailboxes (Mailbox > Rebuild) but that doesn't seem to help.
Is anybody else experiencing this? Any ideas about how to troubleshoot/fix it?

Please follow these instructions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below to select it, then copy it to the Clipboard (command-C):
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
    Quit Mail.
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste (command-V) into the box that opens, then press return. A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Relaunch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you'll have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.

  • USB consuming too much power -notice

I get all the time notice/warning that: "USB-device is consuming too much power. Hub/concentrator which the device is connected will be shut down." During this writing I got the notice three times.
I don't have anything connected to my Macbook Pro (bought year 2006), not even mouse, just power wire.
What to do? I don't see any difference after the notice (that something has been shut down). It is just popping up all the time and makes working with the computer really annoying. It might be related situations the when computer is moved, or something.
Can I swich some USB-port/device off? Thank you in advance already!

I had the same problem which arose just after I lost an external hard disk (Lacie 1 Tb started to make loud clicking sounds). I'm not sure whether I lost the hard disk because the break down of the USB-ports or whether I lost the USB-ports because of the break down of the hard disk (?).
Either way I get the same warning and after resetting the SMC and the PRAM I reinstalled the OS. Nothing of it helped. Instead I went to the authorised Apple service partner. And now it gets scary for real.
Apparently the USB-ports are an integrated part of the logic board (not just a card) and I need to get a new logic board to fix the USB-ports. Price 10.000 DKK. A new MacBook Pro will set me back 13.800 DDK (divide those figures by 5,8 to get US $).
I'm in some kind of chock. The MacBook is not yet 18 months old and works fine - except for the USB ports that I do need for connecting my camera, external hard drives and my iPhone......

  • Dual Core Mac only using 30% processor power.

    Hi,
I'm running Motion on a Dual-core 2.3GHz G5 Power Mac. My Motion renders are really slow - and bring the whole system to a crawl.
Using Activity Monitor and Menu Meters, I can see that Motion is only using, at most, 50% processor power between the two cores.
The machine has 4GB of RAM so that shouldn't be an issue, and I've run the same Motion files on my old 2.0 Dual G5 at home and the renders use 95% of each processor and are much faster.
Is Motion not dual core aware?
    Thanks,
    Joe

CPU processing in Motion is not the workhorse. GPU does all the heavy lifting. What graphics card are you using?

pan did you solve it? i have the same issue. i see people writing 'oh no kernel on 200-300%... well my kernel runs up to 600-800% anytime. i'm running os 10.6.8, i have 2010 2GHz intel core i7, with 16gb ram and... go figure. even ssd drive, thinking i have the fastest possible hardware installed to ease up on any task i'm about to do. but when it gets slow then safari just 'quits' on me, mouse cursor gets so sloppy slow (that's how i always realize that kernel is knocking on the door again). but... i do use screen, 24 apple LED and i have the laptop still open, so dual screen. i think it happens way less when the laptop is closed and i use just the big screen... but i refuse, this is not a calculator, its god **** macbook pro, so if one extra screen kills my workflow then i have to... idont know what. help apple, wth! and your safari ***** so much it's not even nice, it's so buggy but i'm the crazy one, because i keep using it. that's all

I've tried freezing all tracks but this has no effect. I've also bounced all soft synth tracks to audio, but to no avail. The computer stops playing
even at the start of the track where there is nothing but a kick drum happening.......

    Thank you for the suggestions.
I had previously tried all of the above but the airport/wireless thought. Unfortuneately, none of these things made a difference, including the wireless suggestion.
Currently, I am using my Mac's "cheapo" internal audio hardware  (haha). I have a one year old 27-inch iMac,  a good pair of bose speakers, and a polk sub. I don't believe it is an issue with my setup, considering I completely disconnected and unplugged it.
I did, however, do a little info hunting on the internal audio situation, since I was curious what is actually included, and I stumbled upon this interesting little tidbit about my model of iMac:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2718054?start=0&tstart=0
I had previously wondered if I was hearing my mouse in my speakers as well (not just in logic). It appears that this model of iMac may have some grounding issues, as someone later in the thread suggested purchasing and using a ground loop isolator, which seemed to fix any extra interference for them.
Ironically though, I have since opened logic, and do not seem to be encountering my previous static issue(yet).
Fingers crossed, hoping that I will not be experiencing it again. Going to purchase a ground loop isolator, and continue to mess around with logic, just to make sure it was not just an internal audio issue with my iMac.

  • Should AppleMobileDeviceService.exe be using 1/3 of my processor power?

I recently upgraded the software on my Itunes and Iphone 4.  I now have a program running in the background named AppleMobileDevice Service.exe.  It is taking up 1/3 of my processor power.  Is this normal?

Yikes. Power outage is probably the #1 cause of data corruption, and it sounds like your poor PC went through several cycles of that.
Your itunes library database is certainly whacked since you got that message about loading the XML.
However, don't panic - the actual music files should be OK.
But first you need to tell me how you determined 1/3 of your library was lost, because I don't understand that part.

Skype reports insufficient processor power to work in video mode
I am running Windows 7 latest revision and have loaded the full set of the latest drivers into my S10-3. When I run a fresh install of Skype (latest full release or the Beta), I get a message comes up saying that Skype is unable to run a video session or is unable to run at any reasonable quality in video mode. The pop-up says to quit all other applications, but there are none running. Skype help suggests trying the Beta version if on the latest release or reinstalling the latest release if on the Beta version. I have tried this. The S10-3 must be capable of running Skype or why bother putting a camera in the machine. Anyone got any ideas please?

  • More processor-power?

    Hi everyone!
I'm in need of assistance. I'm currently working on a major production, an album. I'm using Logic Pro 7.1 on a PowerBook G4 with 1.5 GHz and 1.5 DDR ram.
The project is lagging and I have a lot of restrictions, a lot of things that I can't do in my projects, due to lagging and the program going down, when I press play.
I'm thinking of buying a desktop computer.
Do I need more processor-power (more GHz) or more ram or what do I need to speed up the processing of channelstrips and audio-recs?
    Best Regards

    hi anders,
yes, you need more of everything.
    more cpu - think MacPro
more ram - think bank loan (re: Mac Pro)
more speed with more HDDs - wider bus and more revs/minute.
it's an investment in your career, after all.

    Thanks!

I'm searching for ways to improve battery power
    and...
    1. Artworks consumes more battery power
    significantly?
Very insignificantly... to such a tiny degree that it's not an issue.
    2. If we found a program that equalize (ROCK for
example) all mp3 before copy to iPOD, it discards EQ
    on iPOD to improve power?
    Good idea???
If that's what you want, then I guess it's a good idea. Be aware that raising the eq level also increases the volume. iPods distort extremely easily when the volume going into the amplifier exceeds a certain level.
Once you've run your eq software, be sure to use a piece of software called mp3gain on your files after you do your eq. It will analyze your files and completely losslessly adjust the volume, without even modifying the song bitstream data - magic! This software can handle mp3's by default, and AAC files if you add something else.
    http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/
But before anyone else thinks of running mp3gain on their mp3's or AAC's... DON'T do it for files that have already been imported into iTunes if you use the 'sound check' feature!!!!!!
