Mail displaying strange characters

Hello
I was previously using Thunderbird, but when I saw how nice Mail is, I switched over. Now I am starting to rethink, because it's displaying some very strange characters without reason. What could be the cause of this? Here is a screenshot (I blurred out people's names): <img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v297/davidjohn/miscellaneous/Picture2.pn g" border="0"</a>
MacBook Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You're very welcome.
That's a very common problem
Glad you're all sorted now.

  • Mac Mail is displaying strange characters

    My Mac Mail is displaying these strange characters on a number of seemingly random emails from people. However, when I copy the message and paste it into a word document or the internet browser address bar it converts these "letter A in a box" characters into what the words actually were. But this is a hassle and I'd rather just be able to read the text directly in my mail application... Thanks for the help.. hopefully it is a simple fix.

  • Adobe Reader displaying strange characters

    Hello! I am writing my uni task. For that I downloaded a .pdf document from my university, which has text boxes for me to fill in. I do not know how/with which program this file was created. I first tried dealing with it using the Windows 8 Reader app. Several times, when I switched from the document to the Desktop and back, all my text was converted into strange characters. I started saving the document before switching, and this seemed to solve the problem at first. But then at some point I saved and closed it, and when I opened it the next time, only the box I modified last (with an essay) was converted into strange characters. When I copy it somewhere, the text does not appear. I tried opening the thing with Adobe Reader. It does not convert anything into weird symbols, but the ones from the previous time remain. Is there any way I can get the information back?
    Here's the whole 'strange character' bit:

    What is going on....It reads OK using Chromium. I can't read anything. I am using Firefox 3.6.7. My View....character encoding is set to :
    Western(ISO-8859-1) and auto detect "on"

    Just to update this topic if anyone else has the issue. I've fixed it by manually amending the following setting in about:config -
    Preference name: intl.accept_languages
    Value: en-gb, en
    If you're in the US you'd use ''en-us, en'' instead.
    I then re-ran Firefox Sync and now on the Windows machines this value shows up as User Defined instead of default and this is now kept when syncing (I'm assuming the default values are not included when syncing preferences, for obvious reasons).

I don't know how to do a screen shot on my iPad to show what it looks like but it's very basic, with tabs for inbox etc at the top, rather than on the left side, it's also huge size font but not responding to attempts to squash it smaller.Any ideas how to restore it to how it was before?

  • JNI: printf displays strange characters

    Hi,
    i'm tryng to understand how JNI works...
    I've writen a simple class in Java and i'm trying to pass a variable to a native method ...
    This is my java class
    public class Encrypt {
         static {
              System.loadLibrary("endecrypt");
         public native void encRec(byte[] p1);
         private static void encryptFile() {
              String p1 = "12345678";
              new Encrypt().encRec(p1.getBytes());
         public static void main(String[] args) {
              encryptFile();
    }This is the native C method
    #include <jni.h>
    #include <stdio.h>
         JNIEXPORT jint JNICALL Java_Encrypt_encRec(JNIEnv *jenv, jobject jobj, jbyteArray p1) {
              jboolean isCopy = 0;
              unsigned char *pwd1;
              pwd1 = (unsigned char *)(*jenv)->GetByteArrayElements(jenv, p1, &isCopy);
              printf("[log - ENCRYPT]...........");printf("\n");
              printf("[log - pwd1] "); printf(pwd1);printf("\n");
              (*jenv)->ReleaseByteArrayElements(jenv, p1, pwd1, 0);
              return 0;
         }and this is my bat file
    javac Encrypt.java
    javah -o encrypt_jni.h Encrypt
    cl -IC:\j2sdk1.4.2_05\include -IC:\j2sdk1.4.2_05\include\win32 -LD Encrypt.c -Feendecrypt.dll
    java Encrypt
    pause                                                                                             when i run it the result i get is:
    [log - ENCRYPT]...........
    [log - pwd1] 12345678@&#9787;&#9787;The question is: What are the strage characters at the end of the password? What am i doing wrong?

    Your original byte array just contained the characters "12345678" and
    you were just lucky that there was an ASCII NUL (one ell) character
    in the vicinity before the entire thing dumped core against you.
    Using C, a string is defined as a bunch of ASCII characters terminated
    by a NULL (one ell, all bits zero) character. Java uses a different approach:
    a byte array knows what its length is. The decision is up to you: supply
    a NUL byte to the C stuff for convenience or use the supplied length
    from the byte array when you're in the C part of the JNI barrier.
    kind regards,
    Jos

  • Strange Characters in Mail and Safari

    Hello,
    Just got my mini home and have noticed strange characters appearing in both Mail and Safari.
    It seems to be a font problem, but changing the fonts in mail and safarui prefs doesn't seem to fix it.
    Specifically: The apple start page rss stories display a weird font, so do the mail headers in mac mail.
    Yes, I did a search of the forum and the only things I seem to be coming up with are font issues related to outlook receiving mail on a pc.
    Any suggestions?
    Stefan

    Without seeing what you mean by "strange characters" it is hard to tell, but the most common cause of gibberish text is the font Helvetica Fractions or Times Phonetic. Dump them if you have them. Also clean your font caches with FontFinagler (use google to find it).
    Send a screen shot if you like (tom at bluesky dot org).

    I use a french keyboard with ponctuations that appears to the recipients as black diamond with ponctuation marks in the middle.
    Is it something from my end?

    Here is some info on the problem. Sending plain text instead of rich text is the easiest thing to try.

  • PXI wont boot past BIOS, strange characters displayed (possible HDD failure)

    I've just acquired a PXI-1042 with a much older 8186 Controller which does not boot past the BIOS.
    Once powered up the sytem recognizes the HDD and available ram and even does a ram check but then it displays some strange characters; what appear to be "AC" and two dos smiley faces.
    CMOS battery has been changed and system time has been updated as well. HDD is recognized in bios and is selected as the boot priority.
    This could be a bad HDD since I know nothing of functionality of this PXI, other than its "hardly been used".
    Just figure I'd ask around before going through the trouble of purchasing a new drive through IT.
    See attachment for screenshot.

    It's possible the drive is fine, but just does not have an operating system installed.  If this PXI-8186 controller originally shipped with Windows, it may have an OS recovery partition.  This KnowledgeBase article is a good reference:  Hard Drive Recovery and OS Installation.

  • Why is my ipad displaying strange symbols?

    I was wondering if someone could help me.
    Just purchased an Ipad3 and found that the date (i.e. month) when displayed at the top of the screen is being shown in strange symbols/characters rather than specific text (saying "march" for example). When i go to settings, date & time, it again shows  strange characters here rather than the different months.
    it is also displaying them in Mail when i check the date of individual emails and in calander.

  • RFC - XI - Mail scenario special characters

    Hi Experts,
    I'm developing the mentioned scenario and have one problem.
    In my scenario I have one transformation RFC -> XML that uses graphical mapping one second transformation XML -> Mail package that is a java mapping where I take one of the fields of the XML, and pack all XML in the Content field.
    The process works, but when in the XML I have one text data and it has one special character(in spanish á, é, í, ñ...), the payload and the mail that is sent reflects those characters as . For example if the data is 'dirección', in the mail sent appears 'direccin'
    Best Regards.
    Alfredo Lagunar.

    Hola Alfredo,
    In deed you have a character encoding mismatch.
    The encoding the browser is expecting and the encoding of your mail message must match or you will see those strange characters instead of á, é, etc.
    So you either change your browser's default encoding (Internet explorer: view->character encoding) or you indicate in the Mail package the type of content and the encoding you are using so your browser or email program knows what is the correct encoding.
    You see the error in SXMB_MONI because it uses embedded browser windows to display the XML messages.
    To fix it you have to put the following string: "text/html; charset=utf-8"
    into the field Content_Type of the Mail package in the message mapping you use to generate the email.
    If you are using XIALL in message protocol instead of Mail package (XIPAYLOAD) you have to add the message transform bean (MTB) to the Mail adapter modules. Using the MTB add the Transform.ContentType parameter with the same string as above.
    You can see how to configure the MTB in the sap online documentation: http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/en/57/0b2c4142aef623e10000000a155106/frameset.htm
    Hope it helps...
    Saludos!
