Mail:  G_L_A_C_I_A_L speed

We are repeatedly finding Mail is absurdly slow to download emails that contain fairly modest attachments.
For example half a dozen mails each containing a 200k jpg or pdf file take everal hours, and it won't let me see them till its downloaded them.
The Activity Monitor indicates the network side of Mail is doing no better than 4 k bps and is often completely asleep (doing nothing).
In desperation we use .mac webmail instead...
Can this be fixed ?

If there were that big a bug more people would be reporting it (but there is discussion on it on another thread. I would suggest, for starters, reading through and following the advice in these articles on lack of disk space and tuning your Mac.
Do the routine maintenance scripts (by default scheduled for 3am) run every night?

  • Mail merge speed/reliability issues

As a company we regularly conduct mail merges for anywhere from 50 to 3000 data records within InDesign. We merge to a document with 3/4 layers and 3/4 linked images (but this isn't the cause of the speed issues as it is still slow when these are removed). However, the merge crashes InDesign when using text files of more than 500 data records. This means we have to do all large mail merges in batches of ~250 to maintain system performance. NB, we do use fairly high-spec machines - does anyone know if InDesign mail merges tend to require VERY high spec-machines?
If anyone has any suggestions for performing mail merges (from text files or MS Access) using InDesign I would greatly appreciate them? Any plug-ins specifically intended for mail merges or even better just some tips on machine spec and InDesign/data settings?
    Many thanks

    Some questions:
Which version of office were you using before? 2003?
Are the data files on a network, or on your local machine? If they are on a network, can you make a copy of one of them on your local machine and try again?
Can you open the files directly in Excel? What extension do they have (.xls, or something else?) I am wondering whether access to other file types has been left blocked on your machine but is allowed on your colleague's machine.
Are you just opening the mail merge main document and seeing this message? If so, do you see the same thing if you start with a new document and try to connect to one of these data sources?
Can you confirm that the message is about Access even though you are trying to connect to an Excel file?
(Also, office 2007 has some new stuff - that let's you specify that certain folders are "trusted" . I don't think that ever affected MailMerge but it may be as well to make sure that your documents and data sources are in trusted locations).
Also worth trying to start Word in "Safe mode" - see, e.g. http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/word-help/work-with-office-safe-modes-HP010140792.aspx

  • Exchange server + Mail  = slow speed...

Recently, our mail system switched servers, and now we are on a new Exchange server.
Mail speed became inconsistent, sometimes it's very quick and responsive, sometimes it's stays stuck, and when I look at the progress bar, the speed of outgoing or incoming messages becomes 0 kb/s over many minutes. I have to shut down mail and restart it to push the message out.
What gives? Is this something that can be fixed in Mail settings? Please help, this is super annoying!!! By the way, I have the same problem when I access my accounts using Mail on my MBA. The settings for Mail are the same for my desktop and laptop.
    Artur

First, understand that Mail and Entourage connect to Exchange Servers differently. Mail uses IMAP while Entourage uses DAV. Since you said you've tried using both applications then you may indeed have a problem with your account.
I suggest you test your connection under a different user account on your Mac OS X system or a different Mac. If this fails then you can be fairly certain the problem is with your Exchange Server account.
If you find your Exchange Server account is the problem then try resetting your domain password, which is probably the same as your Exchange Server password. Be sure to create a complex password in case your login requires it. It should be 1) eight characters or longer, 2) contain at least one UPPER case letter, 3) contain at least one lower case letter and 4) contain at least one number or special character from the shifted numbers. Something like P@55w0rd would work just fine.
If you can use Entourage with your Exchange Server I encourage you to do this instead of using Mail. Entourage can take advantage of mail, contacts and calendaring with the Exchange Server. For detailed instructions have a look at The Entourage Help Page <http://entourage.mvps.org/exchange/exchangeatwork.html>.
    Hope this helps! bill

  • Mail, Internet speed crazy

Everything is really slow. Then I adjust the network prefs, it will speed up for a few minutes and then it slows back down again. It's a vicious cycle!!!!!
My PC is fine, it's just my mac!
    Help, PLEASE!!!!

    Hi Melanie -
Hmm . . . I assume the 4.2.2.1/.2 are the DNS entries for Qwest?
Do you also have a URL for them in the "Search Domains" column?
I'm using "Configure IPv4: Using DHCP" and "Configure IPv6: Automatically"
and I'm wireless, although I used the same settings when wired. How
are you set up - wireless?
Also, is your Qwest service DSL or cable? What modem and/or router
    do you have?
Sometimes, things just get out of synch, like after a power outage.
Have you tried shutting down your iMac and the modem/router, then
wait 5 minutes, turn on the modem/router, wait a few more minutes,
    then reboot the iMac?
Or, if you're wireless, switch back to wired (if you can easily),
and see if there is any change.
    And sometimes, modems/routers fail . . . ;^) Have you had any
success with Qwest tech support? Some of these guys can't even
spell "Mac" but you may be surprised.
And maybe Qwest is having a problem. ;^) I've seen this with my
Comcast service. You call them up, they say everything is fine,
then 3 days later their techies come out and open up the box in
the street - lo and behold - a dead module! ;^)
Hope this helps - let us know what else happens.

  • Mail Send Speed has slowed down since adding 10.6

I updated on Saturday and now it takes much longer for a message to send. I tested with a small (64K) photo and it took 1.5 minutes to send it. I am no computer expert and need an easy fix.

I am also having this problem and it has been there from 10.6 and 10.6.1. The 10.6.1 update seemed to help - it about halved the delay in sending, but sending still takes a long time - about 30-45 seconds.
Anyone got any ideas how to solve this?
    Thanks, Tom

please send me the java program to calculate the mail transfer speed, i.e comparing the sending server's system time with the receiving server's system time.

On my side the transfer speed is somewhere between
    1600 kbit/s and 299792458 m/s ;)Mr.clappen
how did u calculated it, if possible can u send the details of classes , method u used.

  • How can I "archive" mails in Mail App to another internal drive/partition to save space but still have it searchable in spotlight (and preferably visible, searchable, draggable in Mail App)?

How can I "archive" mails in Mail App to another internal drive/partition to save space but still have it searchable in spotlight (and preferably visible, searchable, draggable in Mail App)?
    Background:
I am using Mountain Lion and Mail App and running out of space on my small primary SSD drive (where I keep OS, apps, key user preferences/data and mail for speed). The mail data is the big variable (many GBs) and I want to "archive"/move some of the old mail to my 2nd drive inside the Mac. But I still want it searchable inside spotlight and preferably even inside Mail too. And I'd like to be able to still drag and drop old mails into this archive folder.
What I've tried that seems to work:
    This seemed to work:
    1. Move the archive folder/mailbox to the 2nd drive/partition/folder (don't delete anything inside Mail App)
    2. Create a symbolic link from its new location to the original/old location
This seems to work, it looks as "normal" and as if nothing happened inside Mail App but the folder now resides elsewhere and seems searchable etc. But I'm not sure that once caches refresh or over time with updates etc if stuff will break horribly or corrupt.
Is that the right way to "archive" mails in Mail App to another internal drive/partition to save space but still have it searchable in spotlight and visible, searchable, draggable in Mail App?
    Thanks in advance!
    Cheers,
    Daniel

I'm having a similar but slightly different problem. My company just migrated to Gmail, and it's saving mail drafts every 30 seconds into my Trash folder.
I unchecked the "Show in IMAP" preference in the Gmail settings, but my Drafts folder completely disappeared. I went back and checked it and the folder reappeared (with my drafts still in there).
I like the idea if starting an email on my laptop and having the option of finishing it on my iPhone or iPad, so only saving Drafts locally would not be ideal.

  • Compressing OS X Mail folders

    Hi,
Just wondering if there is a way to compress or archive e-mail to speed up the loading time for mail ?
I currently have an obscene amount of e-mail in my inbox under different accounts. Probably close to 20,000.
I would like to be able to archive this somewhere else so I can search it easily but not have it slow down the download of new mail.
    Any suggestions ?

  • Missing options

    Hi
I am an android user since it starts and I been use Samsung devices, recently I am using Sony Z1 because Samsung devices are not durable and the component is very low quality over and above the after sales service is disaster hopefully I do not face this with Sony but after using the Sony device I found that there is some useful options are missing and I believe it is easy to add by updating soft ware here you will find below a list of this option which I believe will increase the customer satisfaction of your devices but before this I also wants to mentioned that the mobile accessories such as screen protector and covers are not available in the market
    The list of options
    Speed Dial
In the favorites need to be only the default number
    Dial the number from sms
Create folders and move movies and photos between folders in the gallery
Copy and cut during editing contacts details
    Screen shots
    Smart stay
The option to save more than one text to paste
Upgrade the key board options and layout
Reducing and increasing the volume of the notification during call waiting
Screen lock during calls because sometimes if the phone close to the face it turns on and off the quick icons such as blue tooth and wi fi
Hope that the above remarks take your attention to develop
    Thanks

I support all requests from first post and suggest some:
    - allow REMOVAL of VOICE MAIL from speed dial #1 - in some countries (like mine) voice mail is almost non existent. I didn't run into 1 voice mail request in last 5 years, and I'm business user. Custom dialers recognised this and allowed setting custom contact to speed dial #1.
    - SMS VCARD - enable SMS vcard like HTC and Nokia, Sony only have MMS vcard and can't receive SMS vcard from nokia phones.
    - Implement TASK and NOTES sync in exchange accounts.
Already sent tips to Sony support.
    Best regards,

  • Main accounts and sub accounts

    Hi
I have 6 mail accounts all in sole use by me.
Recently the time between switching from 1 account to another has increased significantly. In fact sometimes it don't happen at all and just hangs.
Only happens on bt mail and speed etc for browsing is OK at 7.7mbs
Ive had all these accounts for years but now its getting to a point where I am considering changing supplier if simple tasks like logging in and out of mail accounts is becoming a drudge.
    Anyone else having issues?
    TIA

Why not use an e-mail client, that will automatically read all the accounts, and display them in folders?
    Here is an example.
Using Thunderbird e-mail client instead of Yahoo web mail
You just add each of your accounts, one at a time.

  • Could someone look at my line, please?

    Hi there,
I have BT Infinity option 1.  dslchecker.bt.com shows that I should get 38 down and 9 up minimum.  For a few weeks after BT Infinity was installed, I was getting around 38 down and 7 up with interleaving off.
Ever since the service was installed, I have experienced the reboot issue with the HH5 with the event log suddenly reporting "PPP LCP Send Termination Request [User request]".  I originally had a fault open about this reboot issue.
After reading this forum, I tried to solve the reboot issue myself by attaching an Openreach modem (ECI) to the HH5 and connecting the line to the modem.  That solved the disconnection issue and the Openreach modem seemed rock solid.  Speeds were still the same, 37 down and 7 up with no issues at all.
The original fault was still open with BT though but on 20th April, the fault status changed to closed and that's when all the performance issues began.  Prior to the 20th, the only issue had been the HH5 rebooting, something I had solved by using the ECI modem.  However, since the 20th, there are no more reboots with the ECI modem but the performance is dreadful and interleaving has been turned on.
Last night, BT speedtest reported 16mb down and 5mb up.  Tonight, BT speedtest is reporting 10mb down and 5mb up with 38ms ping.  Pings are dropping intermittently when the speed is low too (a couple of time outs per minute).
Today, I replaced the ECI modem and HH5 with a Technicolor TG589 (it's a router with an integrated VDSL2 modem, Plusnet were trialling these for self-install).  The connection itself has stayed up (it always does when I don't use the HH5 on it's own) but the performance is still dreadful.
The thing is, before the 20th when BT closed the fault call, everything was fine and the only problem was the HH5 rebooting for no apparent reason.  I had decent speeds and a decent ping.  Since the 20th, interleaving has been turned on and the stats have plummeted.
I was wondering if this was simple congestion.  I just did another dslchecker speed test and the download was 23 and upload 5 with a ping of 24 so it has improved a bit since starting this post.  When the speed goes down, the pings time out once or twice a minute too.
I did a BT further diagnostics check about 10 minutes ago and it says there are no problems.  My IP profile is 38.69 down and 10mb up with actual speeds of 23.8mb down and 5.09mb up.
I did another check just before posting this mail and speeds had risen to 29 down and 5 up with a ping of 33ms.
Like I said, the performance issues started when BT closed the fault call on the 20th (prior to that, everything was fine as long as I didn't use the HH5 on its own).  I have been wary of doing too many reboots though and I don't think that I have crossed the DLM threshold for an IP profile change.  My IP profile seems the same as it always has been (according to dslchecker).
The mods here have a good reputation for fixing things so could someone take a look at this?
    Thanks.
These are the stats currently reported by the Technicolor TG589 (keep in mind the service has improved since I pasted these stats, it was a lot worse when I started this post).

Just to add to this.  As has been my previous experience, the speeds have now gone back to normal once the peak hours are over.
It's just turned midnight and the speeds are now 36.29 / 5.12 (ping 22.25ms) which is fine (it was better before when interleaving was off but still).
This problem does seem to occur during peak periods (evening time up to midnight) which would indicate a capacity issue.
There is a PEW scheduled for 24th that includes my area code (01782), I don't know if that will help.
    http://status.zen.co.uk/broadband/maintenance-outage-details.aspx?reference=237847
I hpoe it will help.  It's just that the speeds were fine before the fault was closed by BT on the 20th and interleaving was applied.  Ever since the fault was closed, speeds during the evening have been atrocious (before the fault was closed, it was 37.5mb down, since the fault was closed it goes as low as 5mb down).
There is another thing worth noting here too.  Before the fault was closed on the 20th, the event log on the HH5 would get lots of firewall errors (blocked packets, spoofed packets, etc).  Normally, this would be the firewall doing its job but I have never believed that to be the case for the HH5 since the errors are easily reproducable on demand.  All I had to do was to open a few webpages, refresh the log and sure enough, the firewall errors would be there with IP addresses relating to the websites I had opened.
However, ever since the fault was closed on the 20th, there have been no firewall errors in the event log at all during normal activity.  Not a single one.  I can open a plethora of webpages and not a single firewall event appears in the log.  The only time that firewall errors do appear is when I restart something (router, modem, etc).  The firewall entries appear for a few minutes then, presumably because the packets are getting lost.
A lot of people have reported these firewall log entries and my theory is that these reports of "blocked" and "spoofed" and "illegal" packets are actually lost packets caused by a bad connection/line.  So the HH5 isn't actually being attacked at all, it's just detecting that some packets are unexpected and were blocked (unexpected because of the line quality, not because of an attack).
However, even with the degradation in service and the fact that firewall errors no longer appear in the log, the HH5 still reboots randomly so I have had to swap it for a Thomson TG589 instead.
I read a post somewhere that stated that an Openreach engineer had said that some exchanges weren't compatible with the HH5 (hardware compatibility issue) and will lead to this reboot issue.  I do wonder whether that is the case since I have used an ECI modem from Ebay and a Technicolor TG589 from BroadbandBuyer and neither one reboots at all, the HH5 is the only router that does it.  And the problem does only seem to be affecting some people, not everyone.
But still, the reason for my oringal post is the huge degradation in performance during the evenings (up to the early hours).  I'm only mentioning the HH5 firewall entries and the HH5 rebooting issue because they all seem to relate together as if they are all symptoms of an underlying problem.

  • WRVS440N issue with slow FTP

Have a 4400N wireless router, which has the current firmware & IPS signatures loaded on it.  A client wants me to exchange some files with them via their FTP site.  I am able to connect to the FTP site, but the upload & download or files is extremely slow.  I have a Mediacom cable modem coming into my 4400N router, my laptop in this scenario is connected with a wired connection.
Funny thing, I reboot the router and then as soon as it comes up I connect to FTP site and upload/download is very fast, speed I would expect all the time.  Then I disconnect from FTP, come back hours later or next day and FTP speeds are extremely slow again.  Reboot router and connection is fast again.  My browsing speed and e-mail download speed is solid all the time, and very quick.  Appears that only FTP is affected by this router reboot.
Not sure why this is.  Any ideas or explanations?

I'm also having issue's but I'm unable to upload anything at all. Even a tiny .html file with about 5kb, will time out when performing this step "commmand:    STOR index.html, reply:    150 Opening ASCII mode data connection." A few kb are transferred, sometimes more sometimes less but never enough for the whole file.
I opened all ports, I tried different programs, I know everything should work anyway as I can access the ftp at university or every other internet connection but at home it wont do.
Are you honestly telling me the top notch router from linksys isnt able to perform ftp uploads

  • 3G not working today

I have full bars but no internet access. Mail, browser, speed tests...nothing works unless I disable 3G.
I did notice that sometimes when I have like 1 or 2 bars my internet works, but if I have full bars I get no internet.
This just started today (I think, over the weekend I was on wifi).
Is this a problem with my phone or AT&T?

I'm in Baltimore and I posted about this in a couple of other threads as well. It also started for me over the weekend. I just called in and spoke to an AT&T rep who had me turn the phone off while she pushed some updates through. Everything was working again when I turned the phone back on. She mentioned that there is a network issue in this area but not affecting everyone. So if simply turning your phone off and on again doesn't clear it up, call into them 800 331 0500. The updates worked for me.

  • How Do I Increase The Speed Of Sending Emails Using The Mail Service on my Mac Mini Server?

Note: This is the first time I have set up a mail server.
I have a Ruby on Rails application where I am currently sending approx. 240 individual emails with the potential of more being sent each week as more people add themselves to our mailing list.  I am sending them invidually in order to personalize the emails and to hopefully prevent my emails being falsely identified as spam.
The GoDaddy email address I was using in my Rails application has a daily limit of sending 250 emails each day.  With our mailing list fastly approaching 250 I decided to set up an email address on my Mac Mini Server using Mountain Lion (OS X Server).  The email address was set up to be stored locally at the advice of Apple Enterprise Support.  This email address will not be used in an email program.  It will only be used in all my Rails applications.
My emails send properly but take almost 10 seconds an email.  When I use the same software with GoDaddy's email address the emails take about eight minutes to send.  With the email address I created it takes about 41 minutes.  The difference seems to have to do with the sacl_check being done.  Here is an example of what I see for each email in mail.log.
    Mar 14 11:06:50 hostname.domain1.com postfix/qmgr[45322]: 4B2C5603D25: removed
    Mar 14 11:06:59 hostname.domain1.com postfix/smtpd[99464]: sacl_check: mbr_user_name_to_uuid([email protected]) failed: No such file or directory
There is 9-10 seconds that elapses when the sacl_check.  If I subtract this difference the remaining time is almost the time that the GoDaddy email takes to send the same number of emails.
The link below is a post about the sacl_check.  I was looking at the comments by powercore from Germany at the comments where settings in /etc/postfix/main.cf are discussed.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3241121?start=0&tstart=0
Will making these setting changes speed up the sending of the emails from my Mail Server or is there something else I can check?

The processing speed of any function is extremely slow - such as opening Mail, Safari, clicking on a page within Safari, switching to MS Word, adding a window in Safari, loading a page from Safari.  I get the spinning wheel most of the time before the action is completed. All other Macs which are newer in my home WiFi network operate just fine. I have done a top level (novice) check for malware, and haven’t found anything.  Any help you can suggest would be truly appreciated! Thank you!
