Mail locked up

My mail app will open, but will not respond to mouse clicks.  No mail coming in, cannot change to different mailbox, have to force quit.  Late 2010 imac, Mountain Lion.  Other users on the same computer - mail works fine.

Hi Rickard,
Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
Any change?

  • When I try to send a Safari web page via Mail, Mail locks up!

No matter how I try to Email a Safari web page (using the share arrow icon or the mail icon or the File menu), Mail locks up.  Then I have to Force Quit Mail and send the report to Apple.  There must be a bug somewhere, but I can't figure out where!  I have closed and restarted Safari, closed and restarted Mail, restarted my Mac Pro - all to no avail.  I have every update installed - and, in fact, the latest update to Mountain Lion is the culprit, as I didn't have this problem before I installed it!  Is it possible to uninstall this latest update?  Help!!!

You're suffering from two common misconceptions.
    1. You will never get a response from Apple when you submit a crash report. The reports are used internally, if at all.
    2. This is not Apple tech support. This is a forum provided by Apple for users of its products to discuss technical issues among themselves. No one here represents Apple or knows anything about your contacts with Apple. If you want support from Apple, click the Support link at the top of this page.

  • Yahoo mobile mail locked up, html error, java script error

    Hi
Does anyone know how to fix Yahoo mail lock ups? When I sign in all I get is the downloading wheel but nothing happens. When I used the debug console I get 9 error messages referring to "HTML Warning on Line 1" JavaScript Log on Line 1" and JavaScript Errors on Line 452, 455, 456, 398".
I've tried restarting my iPod Touch, just updated the operating system and reloaded everything but I still get the same lock out.
    Any other ideas?????
    Thanks!

    Hello,
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
''When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.''
    Thank you.

  • TS3276 Mail locks up immediately after launching.

Apple Mail locks up immediately after I launch, connect to three imap and pop servers and attempt to reply to a message. I force quit, and relaunch, usually successfully. It can happen several times a day!

    Lets try ...
    Safe-boot
    permissions repair
    Volume scen/rep
If none of these show improvement, then we can get a little more creative.

  • Mail locks up instantly.

Mail locks as soon as I open it.
The spinning dials next to my accounts go on forever.
    Any suggestions??

I cannot explain why we have had problems, but it is certainly since the upgrade. I also have been syncing with MobileMe, which we know has been plagued with problems. I have fixed my issue and here is how I did it:
    1. Turn off MobileMe in the control panel
    2. Open Mail, and as SOON as you get your main window, Cmd-, to open Preferences.
    3. Wrestle with the Preferences panes, as sometimes they do not let you switch to your Accounts.
    4. Disable ALL of your email accounts, I had 3 active (select an account, select the Advanced tab, and deselect the "Enable this account" button.)
    5. You may have to Force Quit a time or two and restart Mail to get each account deactivated.
    6. Restart.
    7. Open Mail and activate one of your accounts and see if it works.
    8. If it works correctly, activate each subsequent account.
That's how I got mine to work; I cannot explain it. I have yet to turn MobileMe back on in the control panel, but my guess is that this step had nothing to do with it. I needed to reactivate accounts under the new update (?).
    Good luck.

  • Mail Locks up whenever opened.

Mail locks up and does nothing whenever opened. Can anybody advise me on my next best move with what to do ?

Do you mean that you get a pinning color wheel and you're unable to Quit, or something else? How long has this problem been going on, and what did you do just prior to it starting?
Have you tried going to Home/Library/Preferences and removing (not deleting) the com.apple.mail.plist file to your Desktop? Then restart Mail and try setting up your email account(s) again and it should find any existing folders after that.
    Post back with details.

  • Mail locks up when receiving

Mail locks up when I recieve mail in the mornings. I will be going along check emails fine, then all of a sudden I get the spinning beach ball! Then I have to do a force quit and restart mail. When mail comes back up, I just start where I left off and continue with no problems. It does not matter if there are attachments or not! Is there something that I can do?

Should I rebuild the mail boxes or something like that?
Rebuilding an IMAP mailbox is safe, so you may try that if you wish. I don't think that's the problem, though.

    Welcome to the Support Communities!
I would suggest following steps below to verify the iOS, close the app, and restart the iPhone:

You may want to try a different email message to see if the issue was with a particular link.

  • Mail locks up

what to do if mail locks in on Ipad?

Do you by any chance have an AT&T account? I had a serious problem over lunch with not being able to send mail on my iPad 2. I came to the groups to see if anyone else was experiencing the same thing, and your message is in the same time frame.
Mine tries and tries to send a message until I go back to the home page and force the program to quit in the dock. I did manage to send two messages, no rhyme or reason. But the other six or so test messages ended up with the spinning icon.
I'm hoping that AT&T is responsible somehow, but I may need tech help tomorrow.

  • Mail: Have an email that when I try to delete I get rotating colored circle and mail locks up?

For the first time, I have received an email from known source and when I go to delete it I get a rotating colored circle and mail locks up. To get out I have to force quit.
I have an iMac running Lion.
Any idea of what may be going on here?

    Hello,
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions,  then move these files to the Desktop.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
Then try deleting it in Safe Mode.

  • HT2954 I'm not able to open mail preferences, mail locks up.

  • Mail locks up when recieving .eps attachment, anyone help?

When I recieve an email that has an .eps attachment my Mail application locks up. This doesn't happen when I recieve any other attached file formats.
Has anyone else experienced this problem and is there a way around it without reinstalling my software?
    Cheers

    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hello Mick.
Re-installing the Mail.app rarely resolves any problems experienced with the application.
Does this occur during the process of downloading a message with an .eps attachment or does it occur when selecting or opening the message after it has been downloaded?
If the latter, take a look at Mail Attachments Iconizer.

  • Mail locks up when trying to make attachment

I'm having a problem with Mail . . Whenever I click the Attachment button to make an attachment, the application locks up . . Any clue?? This has never happened before, and I've had this computer for nearly 3 years now . .

In the few cases where someone has reported this problem, the users that experienced it didn't provide enough information to properly identify it, so we still don't know what the cause really is.
This could be a Launch Services cache or preferences corruption. The following article describes how to manually reset Launch Services -- the notes at the bottom of the article also provide information about the side effects of deleting each of the files involved:
    Resetting Launch Services
If you prefer using a cache cleaning utility instead of following the manual procedure described in the previous article, this other article provides links to some utilities that can be used for troubleshooting and cache cleaning:
Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption
The most appropriate utility for doing this probably would be Tiger Cache Cleaner, but you may also want to consider other utilities, such as OnyX, or Cache Out X, which are free. Whatever utility you choose, be sure to read this first:
Side effects of System cache cleaning
As an example, this is how you should proceed with OnyX:
    1. Quit all applications.
    2. Launch OnyX and enter your administrator password.
    3. Click Maintenance. In the Reset section, check LaunchServices database.
    4. You may uncheck any other pre-checked options if you wish.
    5. Click the Execute button.
    6. Restart the computer.
    7. If the problem persists, try again checking the Links between documents and applications option in step 3 instead.

  • Mail locks up on launch - still sending huge file?

I tried to send a 400mb file and Mail crashed. Now every time I launch it, it just cycles the little gear and then locks up.
I think its still trying to send the file. I have attempted to use the pull down to the gear and hit the red stop signs, but the system stalls first and I need to force quit.
Can the app (Mail only) be re-installed fresh from the install discs?
    Peter

    Hello Peter.
No reason to re-install the Mail.app which rarely resolves any problems with the application.
With the Mail.app quit and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail > Mailboxes > Outbox.mbox.
The Outbox.mbox represents "Out" in the mailboxes drawer and is shared by all accounts.
Delete the Outbox.mbox and empty the Trash.
Launch Mail and a new Outbox.mbox will be created automatically within the Mailboxes folder and this should resolve the problem.
It is impossible to send a 400MB file as an email attachment with any email client or via webmail since most, if not all ISPs and email account providers have a limit on the overall size of received and sent messages.
For example, a .Mac account has a 10MB overall message size limit for received and sent messages and most ISPs and email account providers have a similar limit.
Email account providers also have a server size limit for all received messages and many have only a 10MB allowance. Both of my POP type accounts have a 10MB server size limit for all received messages so even if it were possible to send a message with such a large file and you sent the message to one of my POP accounts, it would be rejected at the incoming mail server since I have only 10MB of server storage space for all received messages.
In addition, all attachments must be encoded before being sent via an email client and the Mail.app uses MIME 1.0 for attachment encoding which is the internet standard.
The encoding process increases the size of the pre-encoded file by roughly 50% or so. A 400MB file will be roughly 600MB after the encoding process.
See What is the maximum size of email attachments? for information about the attachment encoding process with an email client.
