Mail problem on port 110

I posted this on the Tiger mail forum, but there are so many postings there my question has already been buried, so I thought I'd try here.
I'm on Earthlink DSL. If my browser is closed and I open Mail 2.0.5, I get a message that I known is familiar to many:
There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Check the
settings for account "POP:[email protected]" or try again.
The server error encountered was: The server "pop.earthlink.net"
cannot be contacted on port 110.
What's odd is that if I open my browser, quit Mail and then reopen it, all is well. OR if I open my browser and wait a few minutes, Mail functions just as it should. The advice I've received from Earthlink hasn't been much help. They don't seem to understand that Mail does eventually connect. There's just this annoying delay.
Any ideas as to what's going on and how I might fix it?

Is your DSL connection already on? I know with my DSL and my eMac, I have the eMac wirelessly connecting to my DSL router. Normally I turn the airport card in my eMac off. If I turn it on and then go into a browser or other internet application, I fail to get a connection because the eMac is still "logging in", so to speak, with the router.
If you don't turn yours on/off manually, does tiger have a setting that automatically disconnects and reconnects you to the network connection?
Are you connecting wireless or via CAT-5 ethernet?

  • Sub account e-mail problem.

Hi, I "came back" to BT infinity in December and all was working fine with my e-mails until now ?
One of my sub accounts has just stopped working and I am getting the error below.
I have checked and double checked the password and it is fine.
    Any ideas greatfully received.
    Kind regards......John
There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your Password was rejected. Account: 'xxx', Server: 'mail.btinternet.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR [AUTH] Error logging in. Please visit http://mail.yahoo.com', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

I have a similar problem. I have discovered that logging in to webmail in some strange way removes the problem with the email client POP access. I stress that this happens without changing anything else.  Reading the last two entries in this thread suggests that bearhammer has had a similar experience without knowing it. In my case the problem returns every few days.
Please add to this thread if logging in to webmail temporarily fixes your problem also in order to build up a better case to get BT and Yahoo to  provide an explanation and solution.

  • Port 25 & Port 110 - Are they totally different?

    Hi Guys,
I am switching my ISP soon and I am thinking of using O2 Broadband (a UK company). Everything seems really cool apart from one thing. They block port 25. I thought this would be a deal breaker as I use my own domain name to send emails (for example - [email protected]) from my home ran business. I checked out my Mail settings and currently I am sending and receiving e-mails without any issue on PORT 110. I checked this by opening mail preferences and clicking Accounts then Advanced and all of my accounts show as Port 110.
So here is my question and it sounds like a dumb one - if I switch over to a company that blocks port 25 will my port 110 e-mail set up still work without any issue? I know that sounds dumb as they are two totally different ports but I wanted to check for definite as I need my business e-mails to continue to work (obviously!).
Any help or advice is always welcome & thanks in advance!

    In a simple world:
your mail client contacts your mail server on port 25
they have an smtp conversation which moves the outgoing message from your client to your server
your mail server contacts the recipient's mail server on port 25
they have an smtp conversation which moves your message from your server to the recipient's server
the recipient's mail client contacts the recipient's mail server on port 110
they have a POP conversation which moves your message to the recipient's mail client
It is possible (but extremely unlikely) that your present mail server is talking to you on port 110 when you send mail. Look in the Account Info tab of Preferences/Accounts, drop down the outgoing server list, select edit server list, and you can see the port usage in the advanced tab there.
You need to talk to whoever is providing your mail server.

  • MAIL 1.3.11: server error with the port 110

I have 10.3.9 with MAIL 1.3.11 and I can't conect to the server with the port 110... why does it happens? how i fix that? thanx

I don't understand your obsession with overstuffed mailboxes.
What are you talking about? As I told you in a previous post, Mail sometimes chokes on a message it cannot download and that prevents it from downloading the rest as well. This is a relatively common problem. It has absolutely nothing to do with overstuffed mailboxes.
The two servers are failing to connect.
This is wrong! And which two servers are you talking about? According to the activity information you reported, Mail is connecting to the POP server, but failing to download the messages it sees there for some reason...
If you want to mess with the contents of your ~/Library/Mail/ folder (which you said in your first post you didn’t want to do), there are a couple of things you may try as well.
For POP accounts, Mail uses a file within the account folder to keep track of which messages have already been downloaded. Deleting that file causes Mail to treat everything still on the server as if new and try to download it again:
    1. Quit Mail.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/.
    3. Locate one or two files named MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded and move them to the Trash. Mail 1.x used MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded to keep track of which messages had already been downloaded. Mail 2.x uses MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded2 for the same purpose.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

  • I cannot send an e-mail for my 3GS iPhone using port 110

I cannot send an e-mail for my 3GS iPhone using port 110; how do I find the right port? I have always used this port but now it does not work. I can send e-mails from my iPad using this port.

The port is determined by your Email Service Provider. So first off, who is your email provider?
Port 110 is not a standard port for sending. 25, 465 and 587 are the standard SMTP ports (sending) and 110, 143 and 995 are the standard POP/IMAP ports (receiving).

  • Mail Version 2.1.3 port 110 incoming mail issue

I have 25 macs that all have the same issue, mail goes offline. I have checked with my ISP and my mail server companies and they say that the equipment and setting are fine. I took off the firewall from the network and hooked directly up to our T-1 line and we are still getting the same thing. I tried to remove the possible causes, but we are going through with outbound mail, internet and VOIP. It remains a mystery why the Incoming mail goes offline by itself. I changed the IP coming into our T-1, we have 5 available IP's, that worked for about 3mins. I used Terminal to telnet out to our mail server and this is the message I get:
*Last login: Wed Jul 29 12:32:08 on console*

Does anyone have any ideas why my machines would be doing this since Friday July 24?????

    Hi nancyjane,
Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.

  • Mail problems with Panther

I'm having difficulties downloading email into my client mail on my IMac. (I use Macmail, through BTinternet, an outside ISP. (Not Mac) The problem arose when I recently sent out a round robin email to a large number of hotels in Italy enquiring about accommodation - it's clear from my webmail account that dozens of them replied with quite large emails, brochuires etc etc etc. When I try to download these into my inbox, the spinning icon continues to spin round before telling me that Port 110 or something cannot accept or send emails or that my mail account has timed out. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. There is no problem with the interent connection, only mail

I just read what you wrote. So you are talking about Mail. All right. Can you see how big the inbox is in Mail - that is reported at the top of its window. I am asking this to see if you have an overfull inbox, which can cause problems.

  • Frequent "port 110 timed out"

Hi. Hope someone can help with this.
I frequently get the following message when checking my mail accounts:
The server error encountered was: The connection to the server "mail.eclipse.co.uk" on port 110 timed out.
Sometimes I get mail okay, sometimes the POP connection times out - with no change in settings. So I'm guessing that the POP server I'm connecting to really is very slow.
Is there any way of changing the timeout period In Apple Mail?
    Bruno.
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi
No, there is no way to change the timeout period in
Mail, but chances are that, if this happens often to
you, there is something wrong with your network
    settings.
The network works fine for all other purposes, and does send / receive mail okay some of the time.
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences >
    Network, choose Network Port
Configurations from the Show popup menu,
and make sure that the configuration used to connect
to Internet appears at the top of the list.
My primary means of connection (wireless) is the top of the list. What's the significance of this by the way?
Also, try using a different method to connect to
Internet, if possible, or connecting the computer to
Internet as directly as possible, i.e. bypassing any
routers that might be present, using an ethernet
cable instead of wireless, etc., and see whether that
    makes a difference.
I tried connecting via ethernet on my home network. Again, all other network protocols work fine, but the same intermittent timeout problem with checking POP accounts.
I also tried connecting using someone else's wireless network. Exactly the same result.
    Bruno.

  • Verizon/Yahoo Mail Problems

I've looked everywhere for a similar problem to what I am experiencing, but can't find anyone who seems to be having the same thing going on. For more than a year, my family has used Verizon yahoo mail without any problems on the Apple Mail application. Nothing has changed recently, and the preferences settings have been:
    POP Account
    Email: [email protected]
    Incoming Server: incoming.yahoo.verizon.net
    Outgoing server: outgoing.yahoo.verizon.net
    Username: [email protected]
    Correct password
    Outgoing mail server (SMTP: outgoing.yahoo.verizon.net
These worked for more than a year on two separate accounts run on two separate Apple computers, until a month ago something just stopped and now we can no longer send a receive mail on these servers through apple mail. We can access the accounts on Yahoo and Verizon online, but not in Mail itself. I get the message "Enter password for Account 'Verizon.' The POP server incoming.yahoo.verizon.net rejected the passowrd for user '[email protected]' Please re-enter your password, or cancel." When the password is entered, the same message pops right back up over and over again, even though the password is right. This is happening with TWO accounts on TWO computers, and absolutely nothing is changed, not even a software update. I've been on the phone with verizon for hours, and they insist this is an Apple problem, since the server works fine off the yahoo website. I've tried deleting the account, setting it up again, using incoming.verizon.net instead of incoming.yahoo.verizon.net . . . Does anyone know what is going on, or has seen this before? It's getting really inconvenient to have these accounts offline when nothing has happened.

Okay, I was finally able to get in touch with someone at Verizon who knew what is going on. I guessed that something had happened at Verizon or Yahoo between when this was working and when it wasn't, and I was right. Apparently, Yahoo cancelled its POP service as a portal partner with Verizon, making it impossible to people to access mail on outside POP accounts such as Outlook or Apple Mail. They said they sent out an email warning people this would happen, but I know we didn't get it. The rep explained that in order to access mail on outside applications, you have to switch to Windows Live as a portal partner (whether or not you have Mac, it still works). All you have to do on Mail is switch to incoming.verizon.net (deleting the yahoo). Use ports 110 and 25 (the defaults) instead of 110 and 587. If using a Mac, set up Windows Live by visiting http://www.verizon.net/getlivenow Then enter the primary account email address and password. It will want to download software (which won't work on a Mac), so choose custom installation and uncheck all downloads. All accounts linked to the primary will switch in about an hour. There is one caveat: all of your email on your verizon yahoo server will be deleted and WILL NOT TRANSFER OVER. Make sure to save all important emails to your computer before making the switch. To access email online, you just use Verizon webmail instead of Verizon/Yahoo mail off of the yahoo site. Hope that helps anyone with this problem!

  • OSX Mail Problems and Godaddy Problems

    Hello,
I have tried to resolve this problem with help from Godaddy and from the local Apple store technician who came out to look at my settings etc. Tried using different ports, that didn't help. These various errors happen several times a day.
    1. I'm getting this error: There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Check the settings for account “[my account name]” or try again. The server error encountered was: The connection to the server “pop.secureserver.net” on port 110 timed out.
    2. Even though password is entered in my email account preferences, sometimes I get this error: Please enter the password for user “[my email address]” on SMTP server “smtpout.secureserver.net”
    3. Another error: unable to access outgoing mail server.
    4. Sometimes it shows an exclamation point next to the inbox on the upper left. What does this symbol mean?
    5. Sometimes it shows a lightning bolt. What do these symbols mean?
Please let me know if you have any thoughts on these items. Thanks in advance!
    Jonathon

    Jonathon:
I am having the exact same problem. GoDaddy says I have everything right but I can't send e-mail.

  • Re: E-mail problems - Connection lost in the middl...

Been having similar problems intermittently for some time . . . NOTE intermittently - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't error message as before (connection was lost in the middle of transmission)
Changing from port 25 to port 587 does not help. No obvious correlation with time of day or anything else that I have noticed so far.
    Any suggestions gratefully received

     Helen
    Hi again Helen.
My info regarding using the yahoo servers was actually for btinternet email addresses
    I use Thunderbird without problem,
    1. What you need to do is to look at the main account settings (click on the account and choose the gear wheel (View settings ....).
    2. Look at the item at the bottom on the right hand side of the displayed window "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" and see what is in the box next to it.
    3. In the left hand side of this section, go to the bottom of the area using the scroll bar if necessary and click on "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" - same name as before, different section.
    4. You will see a section appear, and remembering what is seen in [2], choose that item from the list (if more than one) and click edit.
    5. The Server Name should be mail.btinternet.com, port is 25 - tick the box next to "Use name and password" and in the "User Name" field enter your btinternet email address associated with this particular sending account.
    6. Nothing else is needed here, so click "OK" out of any of the displayed extra windows.
When you send emails for the first time, you should get a password box up - enter the password for the email address and tick the "save password" box (or whatever it's called).
Added: Of course, if you have more than one Thunderbird account, and use the default for something else, then you need to add another SMTP server with the correct settings as I've described above, and then point at this in [2].

  • OUTGOING MAIL PROBLEMS ON IPAD AND ACBOOK PRO

Whenever I send emails through my business mails to yahoo, gmail and other mail clients from my iPad and macbook pro, it is rejected by the server. My business mail is hosted by siteground.com.
When sending the same mails on non apple devices, it goes through alright. I have tried different options of the outgoing mail servers and ports as suggested by my host but still have issues. There are no issues with incoming mails on the apple devices. How do i resolve these problems?

  • MacBook Pro Printing & Mail Problems

My stepdad's Macbook Pro just came Fed Ex today. Amazing yesterday, it was in Shanghi.
Anyway, I have two major problems. First, I imported all his old documents and settings, using the assistant from his old iMac. When I went to print, nothing happens. I mean I click on the button, but no print window pops up. It does not matter what application I am in. The printer is plugged in the USB port correctly. It is supported ( a Lexmark laser E320). The driver is installed. The computer even says it sees the printer. I just get no print window, and the print queue stays empty.
Apple support was useless. The person barely could speak English and the recommended solution was to re-install OSX. How could that help, I only had the computer for an hour and a half.
Second, the installer imported all my step dad's mail, but when I click on the reply button to respond to other's email, nothing happens (the exact same problem as with printing, nothing happens). Again, Apple support was no help. Repairing permissions, emptying the cache, trashing preferences, nothing helped.
Any clues would be helpful. What a bumper, as I hyped up the machine
Mac Book Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I used Print Repair Setup. The demo is free, but it is shareware. I had forgot about this software, but have used it in the past, and it is great. It can be found at:
    http://www.fixamacsoftware.com/software/index.html.
I should say, however, that it only solved the printing problem for the root user's account on my machine (which also had not been working). I did not check my account before verifying the fix and psoting here. Sure enough it did not work. Eventually I did an index and reinstall, and it restored printing for my normal account. The utility may work for you though, so try it out. As I set, I have used it in the past, and it has fixed some problems when all else failed.
I will have an update for my mail problem. The indexing and reinstall did not solve the mail problem. I, however, discovered the problem. Apparently, I had a .Mac account a long time ago. I cancelled it after the year of reduced membership costs expired. My computer, however, carried this information forward with it when I updated my operating system several times from 10.1 to 10.4.
After trying everything I coudl think of, including deleting the .Mac mail folders in the Library Mail folder, I went to system preferences. I opened the .Mac option, and deleted the user name. I closed mail, and restarted it. This solved the problem for me.

  • Server error, cannot connect to port 110

    Hello Support,
I'm trying to set up a mail account but can't connect to port 110. The mail account works on my old powerbook. I've tried changing the settings to 111, 125 etc. No luck.
    What am I doing wrong???
    Please help...

I'd call your ISP and go through your settings with them. It's likely that something in your setup is incorrect, or they changed their server to require new settings recently.
