Mail Server when Comcast blocks port 25

I want to host a mail server, and am able to get mail to send, but am unable to receive mail.  I tried sending an email from my gmail, and it gets delayed because it can't connect to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:25.  I then found out that Comcast blocks port 25.  Is there a way to change what port the server app uses so it can receive mail?

This is a common question; you're not the first person to have considered resetting the SMTP TCP port.
As Strontium90 indicates, you can most certainly set up your own global mail infrastructure on a variant port (possibly even by using DNS SRV records to find the port de jour), but by the time that's all coded and debugged and generally accepted and standardized and in widespread use around the planet, Comcast and the other ISPs will probably just detect and block the new port or the new service on their residential service tiers.  Which means you'll need to add TLS encryption and potentially random ports, and down the proverbial rabbit hole we go.
But seriously, the usual and preferred and best approach is a business class service, as that has port access and you can get correct DNS.  Without correct forward and reverse DNS translations, many other SMTP mail servers will detect a dynamic IP service as a spam engine, and drop outbound mail as it arrives.  Some mail servers will detect this and will also drop inbound mail, as well.
As an alternative to a business-class service, you can set up a mail relay through your ISP, or potentially a relay via a commercial mail relay service — if either of these approaches is permitted by your ISP terms of service.  There are various folks that offer these mail hop services by subscription, but then all your mail is routed through that service and that may or may not be desirable.
Hosting your own virtual private server or dedicated host just for mail can be pretty cheap these days, if you're willing to run your mail server in a data center.  That avoids all entanglements with your ISP.  (But again, if you're willing to host your mail elsewhere.)

You may need to change the configuration of Mail to have the SMTP (outgoing) mail server provide authentication. Many email ISPs will not allow remote use of their servers without authentication. Check with your provider to find out what type of authentication they use. Start with Mail Preferences > Accounts > Account Information.
Select "Edit SMTP Server List" from the dropdown menu.
    Select your server then:
    And configure the Advanced setion.

  • My outgoing mail server auto defaults to port 465 but auto detect settings box is not checked

    Hi Guys,
    Hope someone can help.
I am having problems sending emails as my provider does not support port 465 as an outgoing mail server port, only 587 and 25.  Despite not having 'auto detect settings' box checked in mac mail my port defaults to 465 whatever I put in there.
I am running 10.10.1 and the latest version of mac mail.
    Hope someone can help.
    Cheers

    Hello,
I figured out my problem. I had somehow changed the "user name" in the outgoing server. (edit server list > Advanced tab > user name). When I corrected the user name, so that it exactly matches the user name for the "Incoming mail server" the outgoing server is back online!
Of course, I still have the problem of having to enter my keyword password repeatedly, but that is in a different thread . . .

  • Help: Mail server refuses connection to port 143

    Hi,
i am having this problem with accessing mail from my mac. It is a recurring problem everytime when i use Mail to access my .mac account.
This is what in shows- "There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Check the settings for account "[email protected]" or try again.
The server error encountered was: The server "mail.mac.com" refused to allow a connection on port 143."
I m very puzzled by this, it is a problem that happens on an 'on-off' basis, so sometimes it is ok and sometime it cannot access the server.
    Please advice on this issue.
P.S i can access mail via Safari online.
    cheers
    2Ghz Macbook 'White'   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I'm not having the same problem.
It occurs every time you use the Mail.app to access your .Mac account and if so, how long have you had the account?
The default incoming mail server port for IMAP type accounts is 143 and since a .Mac type account is really an IMAP type account, are you accessing any other IMAP type accounts with the Mail.app?
How are you connected to the internet - via an Ethernet connection to a Cable or DSL modem or thru a wired or wireless router connected to same?

  • HT201320 What am i supposed to put as the incoming mail server and the outgoing mail server when setting up my email?

I'm tryingt to set up my email through my school account and i'm not sure what it means when i'm asked to enter a incoming mail server and an outgoing mail server. Help would be appreciated thanks

Since no one here has any idea about what type of mail your school offers...you don't mention what school...your question, as asked, can't be answered. What don't you contact your school's IT dept., or look online. Most schools have instructions on how to do so online.

  • Why do I get Invalid Incoming Mail Server when changing mail preferences?

I unclicked the "show notes in inbox" option and when I tried to save the changes I received a pop up box with the following message: Invalid Incoming Mail Server - The “Incoming Mail Server” field cannot be empty.
I don't know what this means...

Hmmm, is this an iCloud account or other account?

  • HT5361 What is the incoming mail server when setting up a apple email address?

When setting up a new email account the field for the incoming mail server is greyed out.  How do I add the info?

It should load that automatically. It varies.
It will be some variant of imap.mail.me.com. That may get it to look up the correct one.

  • Can I have Craigslist select AOL as the outgoing mail server when I reply to an ad?

Although in IMail Preferences I presently have AOL selected as my outgoing mail server, Craislist instead selects my IMail server, which has never worked properly. What can I do to have these Craigslist replys sent via AOL? I'm using an Imac desk top with OS 10.5.8  Thank you, Rick.

In iCloud/Mail, have you tried going to Preferences (select with gear at lower left)/Composing and setting a Send from address there?

  • Thunderbird is clearing items off the e-mail server when I delete them. I do not want them deleted from server.

'''How do I prevent Thunderbird from ever deleting from my server'''

Are you using a POP or IMAP mail account?
    '''If POP:'''
    Check you account settings.
Tools > Account Settings > Server Settings for pop mail account
    or
Right click on mail account name in folder pane and select 'Settings'
then Server Settings for pop mail account.
    Select: 'leave messages on server'
Do not select either of these:
    'For at most xx days'
    'Until I delete them'
    Click on 'Disc space'
    Select; Don't delete any messages'
    Select: 'Always keep starred messages'
click on OK to save and close Account Settings.
    '''If IMAP:'''
You see a remote view of folders on the server.
So the folders in Thunderbird and the folders you see via webmail using a browser are one in the same.
When you delete in Thunderbird or via webmail you are deleting off the server.

  • I am receiving emails perfectly but I cannot send them. I have checked my account preferences and it says that my outgoing mail server is offline?

It is a gmail account through the University of Notre Dame if this has anything to do with the problem!

    Go to mail preferences.
Select the mail account that doesn't work...
Now check with comcast for the correct setting of incoming and outgoing mail server for comcast.net quick internet search will let you what they are
now port problem can also be found doing a quick search, depends if comcast requires SSL encyription yes or no and which port to use. when you change the settings to the right once your mail will work again.

  • 10.4.7 - can no longer connect to mail server (SSL)

After installing 10.4.7 I can no longer connect to my mail server.
My mail server uses SSL on port 993 - but when I look at the error message when mail tries to connect I get the following:
"There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Check the settings for account <accountname> or try again.
The server error encountered was: The connection to the server <servername> on port 0 timed out."
Why is it trying to connect on port 0?

Found the solution in MacFixIt - unchecking the SOCKS proxy fixes the problem.

  • Difficulty in connecting Office Outlook (2003) to mail server

I have two computers at home, a desktop operating Windows XP linked to the router via an ethernet cable and a laptop operating Vista, linked through WiFi, two hotmail accounts, one .com and the other .co.uk. The
desktop uses Office Outlook 2003), the laptop Windows Live Mail. On the same day about 3 weeks ago both computers failed to 'sign in' to the mail accounts. There was no new software uploaded at the time on either. There is no problem with internet access and
I can access both e-mail accounts via the browsers from both machines, so the usernames and passwords are correct. I have email contact, but using Office Outlook and Live Mail are a lot more convenient than 'Outlook.com' in the browser.
I have tried powering down the router and after a while (8 hours!) powering it up again - no change. I have contacted the broadband provider and they told me what outgoing mail server to specify and what the port
number should be, but I can't find anywhere to enter these. When I look for the connections I get taken to the Outlook.com page but that is no help, there is no obvious place for the connections to be specified. What do I do next?
In Office Outlook the tech person advised entering the following.
Outgoing mail server: SMTP.talktalk.net, port 587, Authentication - yes
When I go to 'Outlook Connector', then 'settings', then 'Mail Options', the computer takes me to https://dub125.mail.live.com/mail/options.aspx
and there seems to be no place to enter the name of the server. I can't find any other place for 'settings' in Office Outlook.
In Windows Live Mail I can find the mail accounts and it tells me that they are on an HTTP server with the URL: http://mail.services.live.com/DeltaSync_v2.0.0/sync.aspx
I hesitate to replace this with the mail server given above, because I am not really sure what I am doing.

    Hi,
From your description, OWA works well, the issue should be related to Outlook side. Actually, we have a dedicated support team regarding the Microsoft Office which is staffed by more experts specializing in this kind of problems. Since Outlook 2003 is old
Outlook version, we have not supported for it. It is recommended to upgrade to a later version of Outlook. Your understanding will be appreciated.

  • Mail Crashes when I open Preferences

This happens virtually every time I have tried to do this. As an IT person, it is kinda hard to bring online and test a new mail server when you can't make any changes to preferences in mac mail.
It won't even transmit the trouble report. Just a really hard freeze.
<alt><cmd><esc> shows an empty window or won't open at all.

    Hi Bridgette,
Are your account POP, IMAP, or mix of both?
    For Safety before we start...
    On Mail...
First Quit Mail, then I'd backup these two Mail folders, by right clicking on them in the Finder, then choose Archive/Compress.
    Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail
    Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail Downloads
(Could be a different folder here if you chose such in Mail Prefs)
Right click on that Mail folder, choose archive, you'll get everything in the folder, and the folder itself in a file called Mail.zip, move it to a safe place, same for the Mail Downloads folder... only the plist is separate.
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
    For Address Book, quit AB...
    Files...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.abd.plist
    Folders...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/com.apple.AddressBook/
I have a feeling it's the main.plist, but let's wait on trashing that.
Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup),  it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move this folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.
If that doesn't do it and you can afford to redo all your Rules, try these & reboot...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist.backup
