Maintaining 1920X1080 in imovie hd 6

I have been experimenting with some hd 1920-1080i footage and editing it in imoviehd 6, but when i go to export it to quick time it only offers me 720 X480 ... any suggestions on how best to maintain the hd formatting--

When you pick "Export" the next window make sure "Quicktime" is selected at the top and "Expert Setting" from the Compression menu.
THen when you click "Share" it takes you to the file name dialogue. In there make sure "Movie to Quicktime" is selected and click OPTIONS to either confirm 1080i is the default or to change those setting in the OPTIONS.
should do it...

  • Importing a video into iMovie

I have a Sony SLT-A33 DSLR camera and I am having a problem with importing video files into iMovie. The camera records in two different formats 1920x1080 50i AVCHD and 1440x1080 25p MP4. I have heard that using 1440x1080 with 25 fps progressive MP4 will give better results so i filmed around 10 mins and when i plugged my memory card into MBPR iMovie did not find any importable files.
I then used a different memory card to check if something is wrong with card but iMovie found nothing again, however when recorded in AVCHD 1920x1080 50i iMovie can import.
I also have Aperture 3.4.4 installed and it recognised the MP4 files and imported them into Aperture library. I could then access the MP4 file through Aperture library in iMovie but the playback is very laggish and editing is almost not possible.
Could you advise me on what format I should use?
    1920x1080 50i (interlaced) 25fps
1440x1080 (progressive) 25fps with pixel ratio of (1x1.333)
How can i import the files into iMovie for editing?
I was also looking at FPCX but being a bit pricey, I decided not to get it. Should I invest in FPCX?
I am using Macbook Pro Retina (Mid 20120
    i7 2.3GHz - 3.3Ghz Turbo Boost
    8GB 1600MHz Ram
    Nvidia GT650M 1GB
    256GB Apple SSD
    Mountain Lion (10.8.3)
    All softwares are fully updated.
    Thanks

I don't have your camera, but this is worth a try...
Try importing your MP4 files by using FILE/IMPORT MOVIE... and navigate to your camera card to select the MP4 files.

  • IMovie 6HD Crashing

I have an intel iMac and it is my first mac. I'm starting to wonder if I should have gotten this mac as a first one because I am reading about several problems with them and I am experiencing some problems of my own. I can import clips fine into iMovie but when I am editing them the whole program will crash and the clips will go into the trash can and when I pull them out of the trash they are all jumbled up, this has happened to me about 4 times now.
    Any recommendations?

iMovie but when I am editing them the whole program
will crash and the clips will go into the trash can
and when I pull them out of the trash they are all
    jumbled up.
    Any recommendations?
Yes, here's one: You may not be saving the project as often as you should.
Clips don't go into the iMovie trash on their own. When iMovie moves clips to the trash without your asking, it's usually because iMovie crashed before you saved newly-imported clips or clips created by iMovie. Transitions, for example.
Here's what happens: When you import clips/photos/whatever, iMovie adds new files to the Media folder inside the project. (These are the source files for those clips.) When you next save the project, iMovie updates the project file to include a description of those clips, their source files, and all the other editing you've done. The next time you open the project iMovie recognizes those clips and their source files.
Saving updates the project file stored inside the project. This file is the heart of the project. It "remembers" all your edits, the names of imported files, everything.
If you DON'T save and iMovie crashes later, iMovie won't recognize the imported files when the project next opens. iMovie has no record of your importing them, so it doesn't know what they are.
iMovie has to do SOMETHING with the files it doesn't recognize when the project opens, so it moves them to the iMovie Trash. That lets you rescue them — drag them back to the timeline or do whatever you want with them.
For the reason you cited — the clips getting all jumbled — you don't want this problem to occur. Saving avoids the problem.
The same thing occurs, by the way, if the project is saved on an external disk that has an improper disk format. Then iMovie can't (always) save successfully to disk, which leads to a similar situation. Confusion for iMovie. Missing files. Stuff in the iMovie trash.
If you save as you should, yet Movie fails to "remember" the clips and other editing you've done, make sure the disk is formated correctly and that you have no iMovie plug-ins or QuickTime add-ons installed that prevent iMovie from working properly. More here:

Don't let these break-in problems make you overly concerned about your iMac. Odds are excellent that it's perfectly fine. You will learn the tricks you need to know about how to minimize the impact when things misfire — like saving often — and how to maintain your Mac. iMovie isn't perfect — no application is — so expect to see some minor problems. You'll learn how to minimize the impact when they occur.
Every person here has a unique opinion about what to expect from iMovie — and what not to expect. "Long projects are trouble." "Long projects work fine." To some degree, those opinions arise out of our unique editing styles. Some of us edit quite conservatively; others create very complicated projects. Without intending to, I suspect the "heavy editors" create projects that are difficult for iMovie to handle. Slowdowns occur, for example.
My sense is these problems are often related to lots of audio editing. I can't say for sure, for I have never seen those problems in spite of trying to create them. I create both short and long projects, test editing with both a "light" and "heavy" hand, but can't force those problems to occur.
Do the common-sense things. Save often, make backups, make sure the routine maintenance for your iMac gets done, and everything will probably be just fine. When there are problems, search for answers here. Others will have probably seen the same problem.
iMovie is a big, exciting world. Lots to enjoy.

  • Slide shows and pic Quality

    Hi, all:
Asking for advice, etc: I have been creating a slide show of a batch of old photos inherited from my mother. I want to share these photos, some of which are over 100 years old and have done the following:
    1. Scan them in greyscale on my Epson Perfection 3490 scanner
    2. Process them using Photoshop Elements to crop and tweak for clarity. I have also used iPhoto which can do an equal job. Just prefer PSE because of flexibility in cataloging and filing,
    3. Create an iMovie project (which is why I am on this forum), just dragging and dropping the photos onto the clip viewer/frames.
    4. Since I want to create different versions to distribute to other relatives, I have created a base slide show with pics common to all families in one iM project and then several other separate iM projects with photos specific to other families.
    5. I plan to use Roxio's Toast Titanium to burn the DVD versions of these rather than iDVD since I won't have to combine the base set with the individual family sets into a larger iM project. In Toast, all one has to do is drag the individual projects onto the working area, and Toast will create a DVD incorporating all the projects. The disadvantage is that you have limited abilities to edit, etc. as compared to iDVD. But I am not looking for fancy here so it works for me.
I am putting this here to solicit other advice, recommendations on process, etc as well as share my process. I am particularly interested in tips on maintaining clarity and quality of the pics which is why I am using iMovie vs going to the slide show function on iDVD. my past experience is the quality seems to be maintained better in iMovie.
Any opinions on that or any hints, especially iMovie vs iDVD?

I recently put together a slideshow of several hundred images (both B&W and color) and used FotoMagio. It has more features and gave me better quality than iMovie/iDVD. I then used the movies it produced in iDVD.
    Other like Photo to Movie.
    Both have trial versions available.

  • Importing VGA 640x480 into Imovie09

I recently bought a Panasonic GH-1 and shot some video in MOTION JPEG VGA 640x480. Next I discovered that my Powerbook G-4 was too old and slow to do much editing so I bought a new MacBook Pro. Now I find that I can't import the video into iMovie09. I read one post that said you could load VGA into iPhoto and then into iMovie but that doesn't seem to work for me. Does anyone have any suggestions? Could I load an older version of iMovie, import the video into that and then somehow export to 09? Any help would be much appreciated.

I recently imported Motion Jpeg/A at 1920x1080 into iMovie 09 successfully.
    Did you try FILE/IMPORT/MOVIES...?
If that did not work, try dragging your movie into MPEG Streamclip and exporting to QuickTIme as Motion Jpeg/A in the original dimensions.
It could also be the case that iMovie 09 can handle the Motion JPEG but cannot handle the Audio Codec. In this case, MPEG Streamclip can also help. FILE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME as Motion Jpeg with audio codec set to uncompressed.
Open your movie in QuickTIme Player and click WINDOW/INSPECTOR. You should see the codecs next to the word "Format".
    Good luck.

  • DV export degradation

Just did a very quick test in iMovie.
Selected a short clip of imported HD footage from a PAL Sony HC3.
The camera captures with rectangular pixels at 1440x1080 which get imported as 1920x1080 into iMovie 08 stored as AIC files (iMovie 06 did the same).
Tried to export the clip to DV.
Selected Share>Export using Quicktime and Movie to DVStream.
Initial output was botched as it saved as a 640x480 NTSC stream, with 4:3 aspect ratio when played back via QT.
Second attempt selected the Options and PAL/16:9 settings, and this time it output a PAL DV stream which displays as a 1024x576 movie with 16:9 aspect ratio in QT.
How on earth do you get it to output full resolution back to a DV stream? Presumably you can't. Did iMovie 06 allow this with HD material (I never saved anything back to the camcorder with that version).
Resolution aside, the quality of the 2 exports is extremely poor - the small preview of the clip playing back in iMovie is scaled to a size much smaller than 1920x1080 but looks great. The 2 exported files are extremely soft with lack of detail by comparison.
Looks to me as though you cannot use iMovie as a repository for HD material if you want to easily export to similar quality output.
    Strange.

The short of it seems to be you can't. DV material in iMovie8 degrades.

  • 833x480 from 60p

I normally edit with FCP7, but FCP7 will not import HDV footage properly, it's all buggy and normally I have to go to Imovie when I tape in 30P.  There's never any issues getting 1280 x 720 video with Imovie, it's only now that I taped something in 60p that the capture is not getting the full aspect ratio.
I'm seeing everybody post that Imovie is downgrading their video to 960x540 at times generally when they've captured 1920x1080 footage
Imovie '09 is downgrading my hdv60p video to 833x480 even when I selet "full" in the capture settings upon capture.
In the past when I taped in hdv30p Imovie 09 would capture the full image at 1280 x 720 no problems.
Is there another setting somewhere that I'm missing?
    Thanks for any info

    @RedHavoc
Yes. I downloaded Final Cut Pro X this morning and created a project with a frame rate of 24p. I imported footage shot on my Canon 7D @60fps. I dropped a clip in the timeline, selected it, went to Modify>Retime>Conform Speed and it retimed the footage to 40% of it's original speed.

  • I have 1920x1080 files to edit in iMovie to show on large movie screen for charity event what is best frame rate and best save option for quality versus file size?

I shoot a lot of HD video of my kid, and at first I struggled to find a good balance between maintaining the full-resolution original footage and having something a little more reasonable and lightweight to work with. For example, even on my one-year-old iMac, I can't smoothly scrub the full HD video clips in the editor -- but if the clips have been 'optimized' to 960 x 540, they're smooth as butter (and still look good enough for almost every output scenario).
If, when you're importing the original footage, you enable the "Optimize video" checkbox, you'll get the lightweight version in your event library, but you won't get a copy of the orignal footage as well. It'll still be on your camera (or wherever else you put it before heading to iMovie), but that's not very helpful.
If you're using iMovie '09 (v.8) or '11 (v.9), there's a decent way to do this that isn't terribly obvious.
    So here's what I do:
When importing the original footage, disable the 'Optimize video' checkbox, and select the 'Move files' radio button. This will move the full HD clip into /[selected volume]/iMovie Events/[event title]. (Or you can use 'Copy files' and get the same end result.)
Select the new event in the Event Library in iMovie, and go to File » Optimize Video » Large -- 960x540 (or 'Full,' which is still going to be more compressed than the original HD, but at the same resolution; I find 'Large' to be just fine for my needs, though).
That second step takes the original HD clip that was in /[selected volume]/iMovie Events/[event title] and moves it into /[selected volume]/iMovie Original Movies/[event title], and then puts the optimized version into /[selected volume]/iMovie Events/[event title].
Now you've got a fully organized directory structure containing all of your original HD footage, sorted by event, plus an Event Library full of nice lightweight versions for quick editing and exporting.

Thanks for that info! Even in my time answering questions on iMovie Discussion Group, I never had a good understanding of when and how Optimize Movie came into play. I always would import as Optimized and Large Size and figured that was good enough. But knowing you got much, much more flexibility doing it the way you describe gives me a much better understanding of the different routes you can take into the Event Library.

  • Maintaining Photo Quality In iMovie

Question for one of you brilliant guys using iMovie.
I have my movie for the veterans almost finished, but I have a question on maintaining photo quality when publishing or finalizing the movie.
I did a test and exported my movie to hard drive, but the photos have piilation in shaded areas like the photos were taken with a Dollar Store throw away camera. The original photos are good quality. I exported as 720 HD. How can I get the best quality if I want to put the movie on DVD?
    Thanks so much.

Sorry for the Typo, I meant "Pixilation, Spottines" generally poor quality

Can I import and edit AVCHD (1920x1080, 60Fps) in Imovie version 10.0.04?

Thanks for the responce but unfortunately Precision Editor is greyed out just like all of the other editing tools. I hope Apple is working on a fix because I have some videos I'm trying to finish.

  • Does iMovie'11 support Canon XA20 (1920x1080 50i) ?

I consider to buy the new Canon XA 20 camcorder, which will be available in The Netherlands shortly. In the list 'Supported camera's iMovie I read about the Canon XA20: "iMovie does not support footage recorded in 1080-50p from this Camcorder". Does anyone know if iMovie'11 supports the format: 1920x1080: 50i/PF25 (24Mbps, 17 Mbps). It seems to be possible recording in this format with the XA20.
    Thanks!

I have no insights, just common sense: iM11 is FOUR years old, FCPX meanwhile offers 'everything', the average hobbyist misses in consumer-tool iM (e.g. support of AVCHD v2, plugins), and - insight info ahead! - on the other hand, Apple is busy preparing  transition from Quicktime to AVFoundation. And, looking beyond Cupertinos horizon (I have this priviledge as a non-Apple employee), 'video' gets more&more popular, Vine, Facebook, Instagram, to mention a few. Integration of these 'social networks' is another area .......
so, it's just an 'educated guess' when and what will happen.-
October would be my choice as marketing-expert.
And October has 5 Tuesdays this year ... we'll see.-

  • Exporting 1920x1080 iMovie 11 Clips to FCE 4.0.1 - loss of aspect ratio

I'm editing a movie in FCE 4.0.1 at 1920x1080 and I'd like to bring across a file I created with iMovie 11. I used the "Export Final Cut XML" option to get my file across, but when I import to FCE the aspect ratio gets mangled into 1440x1080 (according to its Item Properties). I'm just getting my feet wet with this, so is there a pixel aspect ratio option I need to fiddle with, or could it be something else completely?

Sorry, it didn't mention the camera at all in the inspector; I thought that was what you were after.

  • How does one transfer from imovie to fce without loss of quality. Using a panasonic hdc-tm15 full hd 1920x1080

I am capturing my footage on a Panasonic hdc-tm15 full hd 1920x1080 avchd. The format recorded is not compatible with fce so i have to import to imovie first. what export settings do i need to use to ensure i dont lose quality when going from imovie to fce?

It is suggested to output MOV with AIC codec to keep the raw video quality at max.
Output like this: Share->Export Using QuickTime..
In pop-up windows, click Options->in Moive Settings pop-up window, click Settings button->In Compression Type box, choose Apple Intermediate Codec
    Good luck.

  • Why is MPEG4 HD 1920x1080 so poor quality on iMovie 6

I am importing MPEG4 HD 1920x1080 footage to iMovie 08 and it looks amazingly sharp and crisp, but the program continually crashes on me so I have imported the same files to iMovie 6 but they look very average and much lower quality than the same clip in 08.
    Any reason behind this?
    Scott

Do you have the play back preferences set to similar settings. I use 1/2 screen for full playback in iM08 because of the large file sizes I deal with in converted AVCHD. In iMovie HD6 I use standard, which is not the highest resolution available. You may have iM08 set for a higher playback than iMovieHD.
I assume you just did an import to iMovie HD via browse to the clips from the iM08 events folder, so you are looking at the exact same clips.

There are a number of things from Imovie that won't work properly when imported into FCPX.
There was one part of a video I needed as is so I exported from Imovie to Quicktime, then imported the clip into FCPX.
