  • Major Stopping/Skipping Problem With 30G Photo iPod

Hi all. I'll try to give the short version of my major iPod problems I've been having. It's been going on for a couple months straight now.
The first thing that started happening was, in the middle of playing a song, it would freeze, and then start skipping through of the rest of the tracks on that playlist or album. It would sometimes make a "whirring" sound when going from track to track without playing them. Sometimes, this process would start instead when trying to manually skip from one song to another...it would just start to skip through tracks. It had to be restarted a bunch of times, and none of these problems had been present in the 2 or so years previous I owned it. Eventually, it showed an "unhappy face" and nothing else could be done.
I brought it back to Best Buy, where I bought it, as it was still under warranty for another year. They sent the iPod back to Apple for repairs. The "repaired" iPod was back in my hands in about 3 weeks, and for a week or so worked perfectly. Then, it started having the skipping tracks problem again.
Not long there after, it started having more serious problems. It needed to be resetted very frequently. The skipping of tracks, the first warning sign, became the least of it's problems. It needed to be completely restored. The first time it was restored, it got through about 600-1000 of the 5800 songs on it, then stopped and said the restore failed.
Other times, it showed the dreaded "1418" message. Other times it had messages like these:
Attempting to copy to the disk “Andrew’s iPod” failed. An unknown error occurred (-69).
The iPod “Andrew’s iPod” cannot be synced. The disk could not be read from or written to.
The iPod “Andrew’s iPod” cannot be synced. The required file cannot be found.
Eventually, it synced correctly. But the problems continued, and over the course of two weeks it had to be completely restored about 3 or 4 times, although it would then work again perfectly fine for, like, an hour.
So I took it back in again. This time, Best Buy told me that I would be quickly sent back a "Refurb" unit (a refurbished iPod that someone else had returned, I guess and had then been fixed or what have you.)
After a few days, I got the refurb unit. It's not my old iPod, I could tell just by looking at the front and back. And, for about 2 weeks, it worked absolutely perfectly. It reloaded like a charm, and played completely fine. The battery life seemed a little iffy, but nothing crazy.
Then, yesterday, this iPod that *is not* the same iPod I returned as far as I can tell, is having THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. Yesterday, in the middle of a song that I had played many times before, it froze, stopped, and started skipping songs. It needed to be reset, what else is new. So, I did, and got the "unhappy face" with the address of iPod support once again.
I'm really confused. What is the problem here? When I had my first unit returned, I figured perhaps the problem hadn't been addressed. But this doesn't even appear to be the same unit.
Could there be a problem with iTunes 7.1.1 with my iPod? For what it's worth, I followed the advice found online to try to find corrupted music files, and can't find any. When it had restore problems with the last unit, I checked to see if it was stopping on any particular song, and it was different every time. Even so, I erased those songs just in case.
Also, when it freezes and stops now (and with the old unit, for that matter) it was never the same song. And it was almost always on a song that had already been played many times, perfectly fine, many times before, and recently to boot. I've also played through almost every song through iTunes over the last couple months to check for any obvious problems, and never found any.
With over 5750 songs on my iPod, I don't know how I can possibly know with complete certainty if there's anything with a problem amongst them, although completely erasing my iPod library that until 2 months ago never had a problem is kind of a worst case scenario.
What on earth could be wrong with my iPod? It's currently plugged into an outlet, vacillating between the Apple symbol and the "unhappy face." Anyone have ANY ideas?!?!?

I wondered what a 'photo' iPod was. This forum is for the 5G video. I don't know how long an iPod is supposed to last. I think it is based on use and how roughly it is handled if it is a hard-drive model.
Maybe time for a new machine?

  • Major Entourage calendar problem...HELP!

So we're having a major problem with out Entourage Exchange calendars.
When one of our users accepts a calnedar invite, a NEW invite is generated from OUR USER and sent to everyone on the original invite's list! The second invite has full ability to accept/decline, so it looks like our user is taking over the original invite, just by accepting.
Totally embarrassing and this just started out of nowhere.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

Wish I had a solution for you - but I don't. A full search of this issue has revealed major ignorance or avoidance from Apple re: this.
Another problem - when accepting an invitation on the iPhone, it appears on the calendar but not on Entourage's calendar. We share calendars at work, and mine looks completely empty (which may or may not be a bad thing!)

  • Major SMS indicator problems

Okay I'm having major SMS issues on my iPhone 4. It ranges among the following issues. I've powercycled, I've restored it multiple times to no avail.
    1. I get a text, the text indicator shows a number on the green icon. I click the icon and none of the messages show. I have to powercycle and go back in for them to show up.
    2. I read texts and the number indicator doesn't go away.
    3. It shows that I have texts when I don't.
Anyone else having these issues? What should I do? I love the phone and this is my only problem.

Hi there, it's not an issue that I've had or seen posted in forums so my suggestion woudl be to restore the iPhone and see if that clears the issue. If not then it could be related to your setup and your carrier. If your carrier has a technical forum then have a look there for any trend with other users or call their customer services to check your account and set up.
Hope this helps and you get it resolved.

  • Major iMac G4 problems

have other people had the same problems?
I first got my G4 iMac in June '03, no problems with it until late '04 when the Superdrive (DVD/CD/burner combo) began acting up, so it was replaced in December of that year, only to have the "new" drive fry the motherboard a few days later, and that was replaced just after New Year's '05, along with getting another drive, and that time, everything was fine from that point, until late September '05, when the monitor went out. This is where things get really ugly:
I got the computer from CompUSA here in San Antonio, and also got their 3 year service plan. The repair work in Dec. '04/Jan. '05 actually was hassle free, and both times was done by a technician who made a "house call". However, witht the monitor, on-site service was not an option, so I had the computer taken to the CompUSA store, which ultimately led to a month of me with no computer and CompUSA stalling (and IMHO lying) about the repair work- was told it was only going to be a few days, turned into a month, and the "few days" was supposedly negated by the replacement part for the monitor somehow frying the mother board (second time new hardware has done this)- and that was going to "take a little while longer", they said. They said they needed to wipe the hard drive but they could back everything up, so I approved that. So, I get the computer back a month later, and everything seemed fine, only to find that they only backed up the OS, but erased everything else- ironic, because I was in the midst of backing up files when the monitor conked out!
Recovered from that though- but in February of this year the power supply went out, and dreading a repeat of last fall, reluctantly handed the computer over again, but this time CompUSA actually got it fixed in less than a week.
At this point (starting a couple of weeks ago) the Superdrive was acting up, the one that was installed only 18 months ago, and doesn't get that much use aside from day to day use.
I called CompUSA tech support to arrange a "house call", and the CompUSA technician came by on Sunday 5/7 and installed a new Superdrive, and closing everything up.
And then we smelled ozone when trying to turn the computer on. For the third time, a simple installation has fried the motherboard. The first time was at the end '04 with the first attempt to get a new drive, but that was chalked up to a freak thing, and a replacement drive and board was installed in a couple of weeks. But how does that explain last fall's monitor repair or Sunday's new drive installation frying everything?
CompUSA's service plan will expire in a few weeks, and I cannot afford a new computer right now, nor can I afford future repair work when the plan expires. I was anticipating having the iMac around for a while until I could get a new system, without thinking I've dodged a bullet every day I don't have something break down. I wasn't expecting it to last forever, but I've seen quite a few older model Macs still getting lots of use with what seems to be minimal hassle. I just figured I could take my time and save up enough money to get a new system without a long gap between the current iMac becoming unusable and whenever I was able to get a new system.
My question now is: how can I find out if it's all been rotten luck or if indeed something's been wrong with it from the beginning but didn't manifest until much later on?
And there's also CompUSA: the store here in San Antonio is unreliable, but their national tech support does a decent job. Big difference between seeing the technician doing the work and taking it to the store and it dissappearing into a back room for a month. I don't know how I can hold anyone accountable because the problems have been spread out over time, and the service plan was in effect so there wasn't any sense of urgency on their part.
Based on what I've been told, people do have problems from time to time, and Apple might not be perfect, but there's no evidence of some ongoing problem with the G4 iMac. I'm still planning on a Mac as my next computer
Someone on another site told me about problems with a refurbished iMac. Are refurbished Macs put in the same boxes that new ones come in? I was actually starting to think that just mabye I might have unknowingly gotten stuck with a refurbished system. Right now I can't think of any reason why a computer that didn't appear to be defective out of the box would have major problems spread out over three years, nor can I figure out why the whole thing gets fried merely because new hardware gets installed. Three times in three years, plus a fourth repair job to replace a power supply- and in that case I suspect CompUSA might have lied about the power supply they claim to have "replaced" last fall.
If it had been defective from the start, replacing it would have been easy, but what recourse does one have in this situation, if any? I mean, sure, I can get one more repair job out of the service plan, but that's no good if it simply means keeping my fingers crossed that things will hold together just a little longer. The time between things failing seems to have sped up, but then again, a Superdrive going out after 18 months by itself doesn't seem that bad, nor does a power supply, if that power supply is the original from the factory.
So I have to ask, is it:
Something wrong with, but unreported by users, Macs in general?
A particular issue with the G4 iMacs?
Dumb luck, and I got stuck with the odd imperfect iMac?
Or was the computer sound all along and things that might happen to any Mac was exacerbated by CompUSA's role?
My long term-plan is to get another Mac when I can afford it, although I definitely will get it direct from Apple to avoid the problems with CompUSA.
My father told me he personally thinks Macs "aren't worth the trouble" because according to him, when he was taking my Mac to CompUSA last fall he saw several Mac users lined up at the tech support area with Macs in need of repairs, and overhearing said users griping about the situation as if lots of Macs regurlarly break down.
He is a PC user though, so I take that with a whole salt mine
Bottom line: I have a hard time believing that my Mac has a limited life span, and that it ought to last until I can get a newer one. I've used PCs in the past, converted to Mac 3 years ago, and Charon will be using snowshoes before I go back to PCs.
But are the problems I've described just rotten luck or do they represent something bigger?
Sorry for ranting/rambling. I'm just getting fed up with this whole thing. No computer yet again, and now dealing with the "I told you so's" from PC people I know, and apologies if I've come off as anti-Mac or just plain complaining too much.
thanks for the replies to the original thread.

(yeah I'm posting from a borrowed old PC)

It sounds like you had some poor luck with your computer and service provider. I've had only one problem with my iMac (being with a loose monitor connection causing a green hue to the display). It sounds like you have a lemon.
While I love the design of the iLamp, apparently the service people do not. It's rather challenging to work on the computers. Supposedly, the new iMac design is much easier for servicing (from what I've heard). It could be that you had people working on your computer who simply did not know what they were doing. Obviously something was causing the logic board to be fried... You would think that they would investigate this before putting in a new one to have the same thing happen. It could be a loose connection somewhere else causing a short (who knows).
I would get a new iMac from the Apple store (like you mention). Perhaps, you could trade your iMac in.. I know that some apple resellers will do that.. Whether it's worth doing or not is always another issue. Have a look on ebay and see how much they are going for and then maybe you could try to sell it. If you can trade it into a dealer, at least you won't have to worry about some buyer coming back and being upset that this and that doesn't work...
I'm glad to hear that all of this hasn't discouraged you from getting another mac. I'm sure that it's just bad luck (and probably poor servicing) that caused your problems.
    Good luck!

  • N97 Major Native Browser Problem.

    Firmware : V 12.0.024
Native nokia browser crashes every time i paste a large amount of text from clipboard.
Tried several pages (including google), and the browser crashes on every single one of them.
1.Go to Active Notes / Quickoffice or any alternative
2.Copy a large amount of text (Open a 2-3 pages document) or Write a long sentence and copy / paste it several times so you generate a large amount of text.
3.Open the native nokia browser and paste the text. (If it doesnt crash then your text isnt long enough, just paste it several times and the browser will crash.)
This is a major disadvantage for me because i have long & important documents and the browser always crashes when i try to paste a large one.
It would be nice if some of you tested this ASAP and confirm it, im curious if its a global problem with the browser or just with me.

the title of your post is very accurate  !
It's always advisable to do a reset after software updates. Back up your contacts, calendar and notes ONLY, NOTHING ELSE !!! Dial *#7370# followed by 12345. Phone will reset to 'out of the box', you then have to set it up again, it won't affect anything on E/F only C, and should solve your performance and C space issues

  • White Macbook with MAJOR wifi reception problems

I live in a small flat and used to be able to access Wifi everywhere on my white Macbook (early 2006) model.  This is no longer the case and I can only pick up wifi signal in my living room (i.e. within 7 feet of the router).
It is not a router issue as my iPad, iPhone and even my girlfriend's first generation Ipod Toch can access wifi anywhere in the flat.  Very annoying!  This computer is used by my girlfriend for university and there are only several areas of her college library where she can access wifi.
I took the computer to the Apple Store in Covent Garden and it immeditely showed full bars of wifi coverage throughout the store.  The Genius Bar guy ran some tests and said the antenna was fine.  He showed me how to delete and reinstate the network, which I did to no effect.  I've also moved wifi to the top of the list in Network settings.  Still only works within 7 feet of the router.
Can ANYBODY figue out why my Macbook has suddeny become so bad at picking up wifi?
The Macbook is running Lion, but the problem started when still running Snow Leopard 9and possibly Leoard too).
Any help would be very gratefully received.

You need to go into your router to change the channel it is using. If you check your router manual you will find how to get into its setting. I get into mine by typing 192.168.2.1 into my browser bar. some use routersetup again typed into browser. If you havent got your manaul just go to the company who made it and you can view it there.
Otherwise let me have your router make and model and I will find out how you do it and post here.
Could you see what channels your neighbouring networks were using ?
Also just out of interest I live in the UK and lately my wirelss keeps defaulting to BTopenzone which is clearly on a network nearby, so make sure your system is connecting or trying to connect to your wireless network, not anyone elses.

  • How do I report a major memory leak problem with Firefox 3.6.10 in WinXP?

After I installed Firefox 3.6.9 on a WinXP desktop, I occasionally had minor memory leak problems, reflected by getting "out of virtual memory" messages. I upgraded to 3.6.10 when notified that it was available and that it supposedly fixed stability problems. Ever since then, whenever I use Firefox, it starts out quick as a flash, but very rapidly slows down to a crawl, and has twice brought my system to a halt. IE does not cause this, nor any other program I use, but the execution speed of all programs slows as badly as Firefox. If I knew where to get older versions, I would back up to 3.6.9 or earlier. The situation now prevents me from using Firefox much at all.

Im running windows 7, Firefox 3.6.10 and before i updated to 3.6.10 my CPU never went above 10% with Firefox open. Now it can spike well above 50% and i have nothing different from when i had 3.6.9 to now when i have 3.6.10.
There is no evidence for me to suggest one of the additions i have is causing it, its all pointing to Firefox itself and the last update.

  • Why am I having a major cursor confusion problem!?

Okay here it goes: ( I am currently running CS5 Photoshop for Mac)  I have a document open that I want to edit...  I go to select the brush tool. I select it then proceed to the top left screen to adjust the size of  the brush and the type....the thing is the icon that is scrolling over the different sizes and  brushes are "scissors"---not an arrow or a hand...only scissors. I have to select the brush size  with a pair of scissors...  So I select the size then get out of that...I then proceed to go to paint on the picture I want to  edit...instead of there being a brush (or a circle), there is an eyedropper that I am painting with!!!  What in the world!? I just noticed the problem and don't know why my icons are confused. I  deleted photoshop and re installed it, but it's still doing the same thing. I made sure that the  brush was selected and not the eyedropper about twenty times to see if it was user error...it  wasn't.  Now this isn't the only issue...just the first one I noticed. After playing around with Photoshop  and running across the first problem, I decided that maybe the program needed an update. I  went ahead and updated the program and now discovered some newer issues:  Same document is up that I want to edit. I go to use the burn tool, click on it--scroll over to the  picture and I see the dodge tool. I click on the tool bar to change to the dodge tool--scroll over  to the picture again and see the burn tool! It's as if all my tool icons are jumbled and misplaced!  I am having issues with about 90% of my tools I don't know what's going on.   I was shown a link on Adobe's website that said if I update my  Mac software to 10.6.6 I may experience problems with photoshop and other programs..  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/881/cpsid_88159.html   I am just really at a dead end with trying to fix this..because I don't know what to do! I am  stumped. Please help! I'm desperate for an answer!!  The CPU settings thing...I tried it with it enabled and disabled...still the same issues!

I  deleted photoshop and re installed it,
Deleting Photoshop is not advisable, you should have un-installed it.
    Boilerplate-text:
As with all unexplainable Photoshop-problems you might try trashing the prefs (after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed) by pressing command-alt-shift on starting the program or starting from a new user-account.
System Maintenance (repairing permissions, purging PRAM, running cron-scripts, cleaning caches, etc.) might also be beneficial, Onyx has been recommended for such tasks.
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/onyx.html
Weeding out bad fonts never seems to be a bad idea, either. (Validate your fonts in Font Book and remove the bad ones.)
If 3rd party plug-ins are installed try disabling them to verify if one of those may be responsible for the problem.

  • Will someone please answer this, major iPhone 3GS problem.

    SOMEONE ANSWER ME!!!!!!
I am almost about to give up hope with this. I have posted FOUR questions with no answers, so someone please answer this one.
My iPhone 3GS has never  been jailbroken. A couple of months ago now, the bottom half of my iPhone screen became unresponsive so I thought I would try to restore it to see if it would make it alright again. Worst mistake of my life. It is now stuck in recovery mode and will not come out, for anything. I have had various different error messages, i've tried everything. All the software programs, holding home and power and whatever else. Nothing. When trying to restore it, it will come to the last part of the bar and fail. Every single time. I really could do with some help on this one. Please.

Take a look at this link, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414  It's look like your iPhone needs to be repaired, the digitizer is damaged and it could be causing the problem of not letting your iPhone completely restore.  Take your iPhone to your nearest Apple store.

  • Major start-up problems on IMac - Help, please

My IMac, new in Nov. 2008 and running OS 10.5.5 has been having trouble starting up and staying running over the past 10 days or so. I frequently get freeze-ups and get the grey screen with the flashing folder with a question mark during start-up attempts. I have tried various remedies I got on forums or in the Everything Mac manual including:
    unplug and restart
    remove peripherals and restart
    safe boot
    Reset PRAM
    Reselect Start-up Disk
    Permissions Repair through Disk Utility
    Verify Disk through Disk Utility
I ran the hardware test and it said the hardware was OK.
By doing one or another of these methods I can generally get the machine going again (sometimes very slowly and after a few tries), but the freeze-up and restart problems are persisting and getting worse. Today I tried to reboot using the Installation Disk, but it just ejected the disk.
I have Windows XP running with Paralels - don't use it often. Last time I tried it said something about a Fatal Error.
I have backed up most of my important data. I was planning to buy an external hard drive to back up the rest, but I'm not sure I'll be able to complete this at the rate things are going.
Advice, please? Should I just break down and take it to the Apple Store?

I wanted you to know I have been using Apple computers for over 2 decades now and this iMac was the biggest headache EVER!..it would even turn ME to a PC but I have other plans. How many times I had to carry this thing 15 blocks and then they had the NERVE to hand it back to me,once all they did was reinstall the software, I could have done THAT AT HOME!..once the manager of the store hands it back to me,"ALL PROBLEMS SOLVED"!..well they were not..from day one, this was a "LEMON" and no one seems to care, not one person I speak to, not one person in that store....I know computers pretty well, I don't know HOW to write programs but anything other than that, people come to TONY with their problems before Apple Genius bar..what a JOKE that turned out to be!..so here I sit with an iMac,the insurance had run out the day the HARD DRIVE of this iMac decides to stop working...I have NEVER in my life had a dard drive break completely because I am not a heavy user of my computer, no games..and now it's down to emails and my blogs..Apple has changed me but in the wrong direction sadly..I am and always will be an Apple person...I can visit ALL my old Apple comp0uters because when I get a new one, I give my neighbors the old ones..they are STILL WORKING lemom iMac just to check emails and see if I can get it to work but I will tell you the bad sign, very first year I had it, I threw out the box it came in,I live in NYC and as I am taking a walk, a guy is throwing out the box to the SAME iMac..and THEN came the discussion with him about the numerous PROBLEMS On the NEW iMAC!!..I knew right there ,besides me knowing already, it was one big lemon I was stuck with till the end...well the END has finally, thank the gods, come!...and my next computer will be an Apple but not for STYLE, I always went for their great design but Apple has their head so far up an appendage and all about this iPad and iPhone and then the computers come next....believe me, when they sell that many iPhones and iPads...little is done for the real computer customers..and I have NEVER used a cell phone, never had the use for it, so NO iPhone and no iPad cause i love my Kindle...but I will tell you ,I am designing my next Apple computer and it will be that TOWER and then any size screen, maybe two for some reason...and all wireless if possible..but that tower is the ONLY way to go for me but I will use it "low end" not for a business and it's not that ugly and can always be put on the floor BUT YOU DESIGN AND TELL THEM, what you want in it, so you have total comtrol..the screen does NOT even have to be an Apple...but money money drives this company now, while in the past it was the true happy customer THAT MATTERED!! no more...hope you stay with Apple, get a PC(borrow one) and work with it, if you have not cause this iMac is NOT the way an Apple computer should act and turn you off to our community...and that's the other thing, Apple users, used to be a "community" cause we were the "small company that didn't make it"!...so we all stuck it out for so many years....helped each other out
    Cheers..

  • Major iPad 2 problem maybe dead......

First let me say I have all the latest updates on my iPad and Macbook 10.6.8 and iTunes 11 so I know that is not the problem.
Over the past few days my iPad 2 has been randomly shutting down when it was not being used. Sometimes it would do it in a few minutes other time it take a couple of hours before shutting down. When this happen I had to restart it by holding down the home button and the on switch at the same time.
Well it turned itself off again last night and I was unable to wake it up by holding down the home button and the on/off switch on the edge has I have done in the past. So I plugged it into my MacBook and iTunes recognized it and said it was in recovery mode. So I told iTunes to restore it. iTunes downloaded the software and after the download the top window in iTunes says "Waiting for iPad......." and has been like that for over 10 hours now. When I try to quit iTunes it says it can't because it is restoring the iPad.
So now I have what appears to be a dead iPad that I can't gracefully disconnect from iTunes and in addition I can't gracefully shutdown iTunes.
Any ideas what I can try next?
If the iPad died a hardware death is it worth getting it fixed or would it be cheaper to get a new one?

    Hello:
If the iPad died a hardware death is it worth getting it fixed or would it be cheaper to get a new one?
I suggest you go to an Apple store for guidance.  I believe they have some sort of program for a replacement at a reduced cost.

    3. Is LDAP Server configuation is required to work on Collaboration Rooms?
    4. Is it possible to work with Collaboration Rooms without LDAP Server/configuration?

    Hi Kantha,
    > Where exactly the user's information
    > will be stored in EP server?
I don't know exactly what you mean. If no specific user backend store is defined, the users created are stored within the database for the portal server.
    > I understand the purpose of SAP R/3 System in UM
    > Configuration, but what is the purpose of LDAP Server?
There is no need to have a SAP R/3 in the background for UM, you could also just have a LDAP server where the users of the company are stored in. This LDAP you can use for UserManagement.
    > Is LDAP Server configuation is required
    > to work on Collaboration Rooms?
    A simple No.
    > Is it possible to work with Collaboration Rooms
    > without LDAP Server/configuration?
From the last answer a simple Yes follows.
CollabRooms do not need any specific User Backend Store; the UserManagement works as in the rest of the portal on the UME, which again is bound to an LDAP - or not.
    Hope it helps
