Making an Illustrator file that is editable in Acrobat Pro

I have an Illustrator map of the USA in which the states are all separate outlines. I would like to make a PDF where the colors of the states could be edited in Acrobat Pro.
Is this possible?
thanks in advance

> Is this possible?
Yes.
1. Determine the number of colors you want to use. (I believe I read in a statistics textbook that adjacent same colors can be avoided in any map using only four colors.)
2. Draw the map. Each state is separate closed path (or compound path).
All states are on one layer. Fill all the states the same color.
3. Duplicate the layer. Change the color of all states on that layer.
4. Repeat step 3 for each color.
5. Select all, Release to Layers (Sequence).
6. Export the PDF, preserving Layers.
7. In AcrobatPro, set the initial view to Page and Layers Panel.
8. In Reader, (7 or newer, I believe) the users can turn on/off visibility of the Layers.

  • Prefill a field that remains editable in Acrobat Pro 9

Hey folks - I'm still suing Acrobat Pro 9 and created a PDF from a word document. I used the tool and created some fields. I can "tab" from field to filed and type whatever text I want. My question is sometimes the answer will be the same but sometimes not. Is there a way I can save the PDF with specific text in an editable field that can be edited (filled in other than they way its opened) by any Acrobat user that opens my PDF? (or does it is just need to be left black if it may vary and be filled everytime?). Is the newer version able to do this?

You can fill it whatever value in the field, of course... Just enter the
value and then save the file before distributing it.

  • "This is an Adobe Illustrator file that was save without PDf content."

I have a client that has been working on a file in AI CS, never left his machine, but when he went to open it today he gets a message that says this file "was generated by a newer version of Illustrator. Would you like to import this file? Some data loss may occur".
And when we click the "Import" button, we then get:
"This is an Adobe® Illustrator® file that was saved without PDF content. To place or open this file in other applications, it should be re-saved from Adobe Illustrator with the "Create PDF Compatible File" options turned on. This option is in the Illustrator Native Format Options dialog box, which appears when saving an Adobe Illustrator file using the Save As command."
However, even though this was created in AI CS, all other machine and all other versions of AI (even CS3, 3.3, 2, etc..) we get the same exact error message. How it can be newer than CS 3.3 when it was created in CS is strange to begin with.
I assume this is some sort of corruption, but was wondering if there were any cures. It seems our backups have backed up this file in it's current state (corrupt), which is a huge issue at this point.
Thank you very much for any help!

I have sometimes had this trouble since I updated Acrobat.
"This is an Adobe® Illustrator® file that was saved without PDF content ..."
Not sure what's wrong - it seems to happen even though the Illy file is saved with PDF content and everything embedded.
Another thing: When viewing pdfs under Advanced>Print Production>Output Preview I repeatedly get an RGB simulation preview even though I know that the file is CMYK. So I have to choose a CMYK simulation preview and then things look o.k.
Is there any way to stop the RGB preview coming up? I note that Convert Colours messes things up completely, so it's only the preview that's wrong.
    Any ideas, Wade?

    Rosie,
This is seriously weird: even if you have Create PDF Compatible File unticked you should be able to Save As PDF.
There may be something corrupt, so the list may be worth trying:
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file, and when it is not caused by issues with opening a file from external media, see below. You may have tried/done some of them already; 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
If possible/applicable, you should save current artwork first, of course.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to at least 5 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible), for CS3 - CC you may find the folder here:
    https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/preference-file-location-illustrator.html
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall (ticking the box to delete the preferences), run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • Please advice on adding 3D-animation files into a PDF with Acrobat Pro DC.

    Hello,
Where is the button animation in Acrobat Pro DC?
Can you give me advice on adding 3D-animation files into a PDF with Acrobat Pro DC.
I have Acrobat PRO DC .
    Thank you.

    Hi George,
I just tried adding the files as attachments; however I didn't like doing that because it increased the file size of my PDF document quite a bit.
I'm not sure if you're familiar with the "Insert Object" command in MS Word, but I want to do the same thing in my PDF document...but the key is, anyone must to be able to open the embedded file from any location.
I created an MS Word document with several embedded objects.  I was later asked to PDF the Word document, but since embedded MS Word objects do not migrate to the PDF, I am now trying to embed the same files I embedded into my Word document into my PDF document over top of the icon image.  The file types I'm trying to embed include MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe PDF.  Does this make more sense?  I want to create a hyperlink over top the icon image that was PDF'd from the MS Word document which allows any user to click on the link and open the separate file.

  • Replacing a comp of an Illustrator file that has several sublayers

    Hey guys!
I'm working on a project for a big company, and they have sent me a huge bunch of files that I need to sort out. There are some After Effect projects, with each one containing 100+ links to various PSD's, AI's etc.
This is all animation sequences for international TV commercials. Therefore each animation sequence needs to be rendered to a specific language to suit the receiving country. Problem is, I've only been giving AI's and PSD's in English (though I have all the text edits in the other languages written down somewhere, to be manually replaced in those PSD's and AI's).
There are a lot of AI documents, each one with several groups and layers. And I discover these AI's have been imported into After Effects as a composition (retain layer size).
I tried to replace the text in one of the AI's to match one of the other languages like e.g. german, and then saved a copy of the AI file in the same folder as the original, but with the country code "DE" added to the AI file name. I then went to replace that one english AI file with my new german AI file in After Effects (hoping it would automatically update throughout the animation), but when I had to choose to replace as "Composition" instead of "Footage", "composition" was greyed out.
I then made a copy/backup of the original AI file, and gave it another name. Then I made my changes to the original one, leaving the AI file name intact. That worked. The problem still remains though; I have several languages for each AI file to edit, and for the sake of keeping everything organised, I was hoping I could just rename the edited AI file to match the country, and then do a replace in After Effects.
Is there any way to do this without screwing anything up in After Effects?
Thanks in advance, and I appreciate you took your time to read this

    Hi Dave
Off topic: What an honour to have a Creative Cow forum legend answer my question That makes my day.
On topic: I could do that. And I thought about doing that. Thing is, this single AI file has roughly 20 text layers that needs to be replaced with foreign text. In the AE file I've been given, there's roughly 50-60 AI files that needs same treatment. And there's 50 ish comps and precomps (just for the english) and I need to output all of this to 15+ languages. I predict that the AE file will be bowing out due to the sheer amount of comps and things to keep track of. And so will I.
Maybe I just need to copy the AE file, and give each country it's own project. But then I would also have to make a country-specific folder for each AI file I encounter, copy the AI in there keeping the document name intact, make my edits, and then replace it in the country-specific AE project where it belongs... I'm treading water here aren't I...

  • How do I edit a PDF file that was created with Acrobat 6

I was given a PDF catalog file from one of my manufactures to use on my web  site, I was told that I need to edit the file and take out the last page which  is for my eyes only not the public, but the way they instructed me to do so has  not worked, so does anybody have an idea on how to do this?
Also they have tried to  send me a corrected file with the last page removed but the file size is to big  to be sent through email. Any help would be great. Thank You

Ok thank you I will try this but how will I know if there is a security set and also my mistake what I downloaded was Acrobat X Pro which is $200 from Adobe's web site. I am not very familiar with Acrobat but I will give it a try thank you again. Gary
To see if there is security, open the document, go to File>Properties>Security. It will tell you what is allowed and what is not allowed.
Keep in mind that Acrobat Pro is not $200 unless you have a qualifying older version to upgrade from. If not, it's more like $449.

  • Exporting Illustrator file in photoshop, editing doesn't work

    Hi there,
I had created my web site layout in illustrator but realized how bad of an idea it was and would like to continue my layout in photoshop (CS5). I exported my .ai files into .psd. Only problem is I can't edit anything now. If I try to edit the text, move things around, crop... nothing works. Why?
    Thanks for your help!

Illustrator is a vector editor.  Photoshop is a bitmap editor.
By importing an Illustrator file into Photoshop it is converted into a bitmap and therefore individual components are no longer editable.
A partial solution is to export/import each colour component separately and re-do all text.

  • How do I import xmp files that contain edits from another computer?

I edited some images on my laptop and the Metadata Catalog settings show changes are written into the .xmp files.  I copied both the CR2 and corresponding .xmp files to my Desktop computer.  When I imported the images into LR 5.5, the edits did not show up.
How do I get the corresponding .xmp files to update the CR2 files?  Or do I have to start over and import the LR Catalog from my Laptop for just this series of images?
If I send off my CR2 files for someone to edit and they send me back the .xmp files containing the edits, shouldn't I be able to update my original CR2 files???
    Thanks, Marc

Also for the info to be read 100% both computers need to be using the same version of LR. (e.g. Lr 4.x will not apply all the info from LR 5.x)

  • Disappearing PDF file after saving work in Acrobat Pro 9?

I use Acrobat Pro 9 to do markups. Some of the files may be as large as 2,000 pages. At various points, I save my work. Sometimes, however, I save my work, close the program. I come back later and discover that the PDF file that I working seems to have vanished. It's not in Recyle Bin and searching for it, does not bring it up. There isn't even an icon. When this happens, all that remains are aabxxx 's in Recent Places. Sometimes if I am lucky, I can somehow generate another PDF file. Sometimes not.
I know that it is possible I could strike the wrong key and not save my work. But this has happened often where that something else be the reason.. I have looked for solutions to this problem in the past and have not been able to find any.  I currently am using Windows 7 with IE9
    Any ideas? Thanks.

Thank you for your help and suggestions. I put in the browser info, but I wasn't sure if that would be helpful. I have a lot of problems with IE9 and using Microsoft Word and Excel.. MS Office 2010 is 64-bit.  The version of Windows 7 I have is 64-bit. What happened is that I began working for this one publisher, AA9 was the version in use and that was I was instructed to use It was also just before the release of AAX.
Do you think that the 32-bit/64-bit difference is what could be causing the issue?
I put off going to a new version because of the cost and the fact that I wouldn't have time to learn the current version. I have a lot of projects right now and scheduling is tight.

  • Form created in Acrobat Pro 8 not editable in Acrobat Pro XI

I created several forms in Acrobat Pro 8, using LiveCycle Designer. I upgraded to Acrobat XI a few days ago when I learned it was unstable under Windows 7. I am now finding I cannot edit my existing forms in Acrobat Pro XI because it doesn't include LiveCycle Designer. This has apparently been moved into a separate product that will cost me another $300. Moreover, I can't seem to save my existing forms at Word documents to re-import them into Acrobat XI, so I can re-create the forms from scratch. I suppose I could print and scan them, but that will result in a less legible form.
This loss of functionality and cross-compatibility between versions is disturbing. I feel I have just paid $200 to get less functionality than I had before.
It also appears that the most expedient method for creating new forms in Acrobat XI is to upload them to FormsCentral. I am reluctant to upload these to a third-party server, and resent being required to do so in order to maintain any functionality.
Is this an ill-planned marketing strategy to get people to buy another software package (which isn't happening in my case), or is there some work-around I am not seeing here?

To create a form in Acrobat, you first create a PDF that you will be adding form fields to. Normally yo'd create the source document in a program like InDesign or Word, convert to PDF, and place the form fields where they need to go. Acrobat includes a Form Wizard that can attempt to add fields where it thinks they should go, but I rarely use it, preverring to add the fields manually. To do this, select: Tools > Forms > Edit
and you'll be switched to form editing mode. At the top you'll see the various form field tools that you can use to add fields to the document. This type of form is known as an Acroform, as opposed to an XFA form (static or dynamic) that LiveCycle Designer creates.
Acrobat 11 comes with the FormCentral form creation application that allows yo to create forms that can be used with the FormsCentral service. It allows you to export a form to PDF, which can be further edited in Acrobat. FormsCentral can also work with a PDF form (Acroform) that you create entirely in Acrobat.
I think an Acroform is the more versatile type of the three mentioned since they have the widest support in the PDF viewers that are out there, but which you choose depends on your needs. Each have their advantages.

  • How to export a Form edited in LC Design to still be editable in Acrobat Pro

First off, I’m a new to Forms and how they work.
I created a PDF Form in Acrobat Pro from an existing Word Document. The Form was setup with some functionality like automatically assigning the current Date in a field for when the document is accessed.  It consists of 3 signature fields, and was setup to auto populates the signature dates when the person signing captures their name. Each signature block also has code to auto generates an email to be sent after signing. Everything works fine one the From.
My Problem is that I now need to add extra columns and text onto the Form. Unfortunately Acrobat Pro does not allow me to make the content changes required. So I imported a copy of the Form into LC Design and was able to make the required changes. But now none of the functionality seems to work. And when I save it and open the PDF in Acrobat, as soon as I try to Edit the Form it want to re-launce the LC Designer.
I either need to get the functionality to work through LC Designer, or have a way to make the form work again through Acrobat Pro.

    Hi George,
thank you for your suggestion. I was not aware of this option. I've tried it and it does seem to be the option with the least amount of work to keep the functionality of the form in tact. I only need to make minor ajustments to the Field locations now but the code and everything else seems to still be in place.
    thank you once again.

  • Support for PDF form editing in Acrobat Pro XI and futire versions?

Will Adobe Professional continue to support the creation and editing of PDF forms after Forms Central? Can I import my Forms-Central PDF forms into Acrobat XI? What are the plans for future versions of Acrobat Pro - any cancellations planned for forms-features?

    >. I understand that this LifeCycle Reader Extensions allows for such a result
    That's correct.
    >but I have not clue how to add this funtionality to my already created PDF?!?
LiveCycle Reader Extensions is a product. You buy it. Note that the
price is "on application" and varies with your company's needs, but is
typically either tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars. This is to
offset the "lost sales" of Acrobat which people would otherwise have
    to buy to save forms.
    > I have downloaded the trial version Adobe LifeCycle Designer 7.1 (which appears to have full functionality for only 60 days)in hopes to just add this capability
There are many products with LiveCycle in the name from Adobe. That's
    a different one.

  • Save form in Reader AND allow users to edit in Acrobat Pro

I have to create a generic form that I can pass on that allows somoene to edit/customize the form for different clients. However, the end users also have to be able to fill in the form and then save that form locally. It seems to me that Acrobat Pro and Reader are cancelling each other out in this regard. I can set up the form just fine in Acrobat Pro, but when I enable the "Save" function for Reader, I can't edit the form anymore in Acrobat Pro.
Full disclosure, I'm still on Acrobat Pro 7 (I had to use a co-worker's Acrobat Pro 8 to set the "Save Form" function for Reader). Have the later versions of Acrobat Pro fixed this issue?

Or You could let the end users without Acrobat use the free PDF-XChange Viewer to fill out and save the form.
    http://www.docu-track.com/
(Strange that it is so hard for Adobe to meet this simple need to fill out and save for common users with only the Adobe Reader - with out any "hanky panky" applying with Acrobat)
