Making Claim Chits in InDesign

I'm trying to construct a document that's basically a claim chit/coat check in InDesign: I want to run them off, 3 per page on 8.5" X 14" paper.  I need to be able to place, twice, on each form, a unique 4-digit number (so that when someone leaves something with me, I can match the numbers up: one it the claim check/receipt, one is my copy).
I considered making a very large document (cause I'll need at least a couple hundred of these) and just starting the page numbers somewhere in the 1000-range, but since I need 3/page I doubt that will work. (I also considered using Acrobat to just print 3/page of the correct (4.5 X8.5 inch) document, but that could get tricky.
I could also generate a text-based list of numbers and just load place cursor/flow it all together, if each number is listed twice in the list.
Is there an easy way to do this?
Thanks.
I've realized I can do this with a data merge, which seems the simplest path to take, unless anyone can come up with a better idea.
Thanks!

CS -- through the PageMaker Plugin Pack -- and all following CSes (CS2, CS3, CS4, ... until Adobe runs out of imagination) all support paragraph numbering. So presumably, the easiest way is to let ID itself make the numbers.
.. if each number is listed twice in the list...
Make two separate stories of the numbered list
If that fails (I dunno, perhaps they didn't count on numbers in the thousands ...) you can always use the most simple spreadsheet to create a plain text file with all numbers, or run this little javascript... (hmm -let me think)
numberOfEntries = 1000;  // Whatever...
a = app.selection[0];
if (a.hasOwnProperty("baseline"))
var theStart = prompt ("Starting number", "1000", "Enter starting number");
if (theStart == null)
  alert ("Ha ha.");
else
  theStart = Number(theStart);
  str = "";
  for (i=0; i<numberOfEntries; i++)
    str += (theStart+i)+"\t"+(theStart+i)+"\r";
  a.insertionPoints[-1].contents += str;
} else
alert ("Please place your text cursor inside a text frame first");
It will insert each number twice, with a tab inbetween.

  • When making a PDF in Indesign CS5 crashes?

    Is there any way to reset the PDFs Presets in Indesign. The High Quality PDF (that is a preset already in Indesign) started to crash ages ago. I just made up new PDF Presets. Now it seems that when making PDFS whether Press Quality or the ones I have made myself it crashes. I launch Indesign then can make a PDF but then when I open another document it crashes again? Any help greatly appreciated

    Please see Adobe Forums: InDesign CS5.5 Not Responding for directions to to produce a Hang report, then a forced crash and report, and put both of them on Pastebin.com, not here, and put links to both of them here. We may be able to pin down the problem from the reports.
    I'm about to quit for the day, so either someone else will help you, or I'll pick up again in the morning.

  • Making a net in Indesign?

    Is it possible to make a product net in Indesign CS5?
    What would be the best way to create this template?
    I have to design an accurate box cover with images and text on, and all the tabs ect.
    The only way I can think of is by making all the different areas and tabs and joining it all together?
    But that is going to be really long...
    Hope someone can help me out,
    Cheers

    Help those of us who are jargon challenged in the packaging industry and tell us what a product net is.
    Seems to me that a box cover starts life as a flat sheet and would b similar to designing any other die-cut and folded piece. You can do that in Illustrator or in ID. I would start5 with the documetn size large enough to hold all of the various panels and tabs when unfolded, then add guides and create the various panels. You may have to rotate a few frames as you go. You can also create each panel as a separate file and place into a larger file, but that seems like a waste of time to me unless you are working with a template where much of the design can be static and you need only change one or two panels per product.
    You should add a die-line to the file, usually on a new layer, and it should use a dedicated spot color so it outputs separately, and be sure to select it and open the Attributes panel so you can set it to overprint or it will leave a knocked out shadow of itself in the printed art.

  • Error while making an epub from InDesign CS4

    I'm trying to make an epub from a book pallette in InDesign CS4. I get this error message:
    Could not find required entry in archive: OEBPS/\QBones%20cover%2015%20ePub%202.xhtml|\
    so the document won't open in Stanza. Although it will in Adobe Digital Editions and in calibre.
    Any body get this error message? Am I clicking a wrong button somewhere, or is there something wrong with my file?
    I'm also having trouble getting the export settings right for the type, and still need to learn how to build the table of contents.
    with hope and thanks,
    Linda

    I am having the exact same problem.  When exporting a book from CS4 only the TOC and the first Chapter or section export correctly.  Inside the epub file everything seems configured correctly but all the chapter or sections after the first are xhtml files without any content, just the initial structure of an ordinary xhtml file.
    Anyone have any answers to this?  If we can't get the export from book option working it basically makes InDesign useless for Epubbing things.  Which makes me think this isn't a common problem or if it is there is a solution.
    Help!
    Oh, and I am using the ME edition of CS4 in case that matters, though I don't see that it should.

  • Problems making a PDF from Indesign CS5

    Hi friends. I have recently switched to CS5 and I find that I usually need to close the program and then reopen it before I can make a PDF. It says it is working in the background but all it does is spin without creating the PDF. Anyone else having this problem?
    TED

    I have been reading this thread and am very confused about the assertion that somehow a problem encountered in the initial release of InDesign 7 will require any user "to pay more to get a fix!" There is no known fix at this time, for free for for any charge. And Adobe does not charge anything extra for the dot releases with the fixes for problems reported by users or discovered internally.
    If someone on this thread really believes that they were given that type of misinformation by someone at Adobe, please contact me off-forum (click on my name for my e-mail address) with particulars (when and who told exactly what with regards to obtaining a "fix") and I will gladly follow-up on this ASAP.
    BTW, contrary to assertions made here, yes, testing was done with PDF export both internally within Adobe and with a reasonably large group of pre-release external testers. The problem did not come up even with very complex InDesign documents hundreds of pages long. That doesn't mean that there isn't some problem that really needs to get resolved ASAP, but rather, despite attempts to provide wide test coverage, there are circumstances (including user-specific configurations, drivers, OS versions, etc.) that simply cannot be unmasked until literally thousands of users get their hands on the software. Adobe makes the best effort to respond to these issues as quickly as possible of course trying to make sure that any "fix" doesn't break other features.
              - Dov
    PS:     Update - at least one beta tester did in fact see this problem but the InDesign team wasn't able to reproduce the problem at that time. We will make sure that they are very aware that the problem, if not easily reproducible in our labs, is very real and needs fixing ASAP.

  • Making a pdf from InDesign to insert into an email

    Hello,
    I made a pdf file from an invitation I made in inDesign. Using the macs entourage program, I inserted it as a picture file so it would show up in the email, more like an html page. In the mac it opens ok, but window users can't see it. Does anyone know if there is anything I can do to make it show up in outlook on the PC?
    thanks!!!
    barbara

    Hi Bob,
    Your idea worked perfect...everyone was happy with the quality...
    I never actually write on the Windows side, but I figured in this case I would try.
    I will reference in the future should I try this again. Not sure how to link to it, but I will take a look at the site, I am sure its here somewhere ;-)
    thanks for your help!!!

  • Problems making coupon box in Indesign CS4

    I'm new to Indesign, in fact I'm using CS4 at the public library until I can afford my own copy.
    While creating an ad, I made a coupon box.  But the color of the dashes changed colors
    as they went around the box.  On the right it was black but on the left hand side of the box,
    it had turned white.
    Any idea what I may have been doing wrong. I had to get the ad out so I managed to fix
    the problem another way but I'd like to know how to head off this problem in the future.

    Bob,
    That must be it.  I haven't done much with gradient and I can't see that
    it's used in this instance.  But the coupon colors are four or five shades
    depending where on the box it is so that makes sense.  Thanks!

  • Newbie - Need help for making object selections in InDesign CS2

    I am an old PageMaker user and am having difficulty getting indd to make multiple object selections.  Is there someone out there who would be willing to do a private discussion so that I can make progress?  So far, I have been unable to select multiple objects to copy or move.  I do not understand how indd works.
    Thanks for any assistance

    There are basically two ways to select multiple objects, as explained above. Either "marquee" using the selection tool (black arrow) by holding down the mouse button as you drag throught them (same as Pagemaker, except everything you touch will be selected rather than having to completely surround it), or to hold Shift as you click multiple objects, also the same as Pagemaker.
    If this isn't working for you, there may be something else happening. First, are you using the Selection tool? The white arrow is the Direct Selection tool which is used to select the content of a frame, the frame path for editing, or any node on any other path for editing. The only time the Direct Select tool will select an entire object is if it is part of a group.
    Next, is the object locked in some way? Pehaps the entire layer is locked, or the object is locked individually. I find it easiest to identify locked objects by opeing the Layers panel in CS5 or CS5.5, it's less easy in earlier versions which don't have the expanded Illustrator-style layers panel. In earlier versions, though, you should be able to select an individually locked object, but not one on a locked layer, though you will not be able to move it. In CS5/5.5 there is a preference for whether you can select locked objects, and it is off by default, which in my opinion is a poor choice if you work with legacy files or templates where things are locked to prevent shifting.
    Perhaps these unselectable objects are on a master page. Since CS4 objects on a master page have displayed a dotted edge when frame edges are showing. It's possiple to confuse this with the slightly heavier dashed line used to denote the bounding box of a group until you get used to it. Unlike Pagemaker, if you need to select a master object, it can be overridden onto the document page by holding Cmd (Ctrl) + Shift and clciking on it.
    The last possibility is there is actually something wrong with your installation of ID. If you run Windows 7 or Vista it could be a problem with large fonts (see http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/403/kb403039.html). Otherwise it's most likely corrupt preferences and you should read Replace Your Preferences
    It would help us help you if you tell us your OS and the version of ID you are using.

  • Making website in Indesign CS 5.5

    Hi,
    I am a big lover of Indesign.
    I have read most of articles people saying not to create website in Indesign, but i dont agree with them i started making my website in Indesign CS5.5 .
    I am facing one problem "How to center the website in center of browser as most of the website open".
    Website size is 1024 x 768. And i have exported html and swf file and uploaded both files in ftp.
    My website is www.pixeltodot.com. I am still in process of making the website, but if anyone can help me would be great.
    Rohit

    Most Flash developers use swfobject to load a flash site. Here's the download and documentation page:
    http://code.google.com/p/swfobject/wiki/documentation
    swfobject makes it easy to add alternate HTML content, which can help with SEO.
    To center a SWF you can define a CSS style then wrap the SWF in a div. So the style to center both horizontally and vertically a style would be defined inside the head tag like this:
    <style type="text/css">
    #wrap {width: 1024px; height: 768px; margin-left: -512px; margin-top: -384px; position: absolute; left: 50%; top: 50%;}
    </style>
    And then you wrap the content after the body tag with this:
    <div id="wrap">
          your content here
    </div>
    Your site loaded in less than 2 secs for me, but there's nothing in the display of the site that couldn't be done with HTML. The only reason to use Flash is for effects and interactions that can't be accomplished with HTML and scripting.

  • Help. Why has the end content of my Indesign file disappeared?

    Hi. I'm using Indesign 5.5 on a Windows 7 PC.
    I'm currently making an epub in Indesign. It is a long flowing document on a single page. I'm separating chapters with Style headings.  I've been slowly going through it and adding the image files. I've reached page 66 and the end of my document is missing. I've gone back through earlier versions and in each have seen that there is a little bit more of my text. Very puzzled I tried to copy the missing text onto the end of my current document and it doesn't appear. I'm now wondering if there is a 66 page size limit?
    If there is what can I do to complete my epub. Start a new file for the second half of my book and somehow merge them?
    Any help appreciated as this unforseen problem is like a kick in the guts.
    Thanks.

    You need to back up and learn some basics before you get to far into ePub. (Sorry to be blunt)
    - Click the red overset symbol to load all the overset text.
    - Add one page to the end of the document.
    - At that new page, Hold the Shift key while clicking inside the page margin to flow all the overset text, adding new pages as needed. (You should see the laoded curser change appearance when the shift key is held)

  • Please share your experiences moving from Quark to InDesign

    My company's design group is pushing to move from Quark to Indesign, starting with one of my projects, which is our largest (400 pages), highest profile document (it is currently in Quark, and the plan is to pour the text and graphics into InDesign). Our schedule is very lean--leaving little room for surprises. None of the compositors in the design group have used InDesign. They are expected to recieve some formal training--but only about 1 week's worth total over a period of several weeks. I am all for making the transition to InDesign, but feel that the wiser path to take is to start on smaller and less high-profile documents that have more time in the schedule for the learning curve. However the design manager is adament that the transition will be problem-free. My experience is that any transition like this has bumps, and most are unexpected, and create havoc and panic. This document has only gone to print on time once (in 10+ years)--with me managing the project and with much sweat and tears. My hope that this year we could go to print on time AND do it with less wear and tear on all who work on it. I just don't think this will happen making this tranisiton now. Can anyone share their experiences when they made the transition?

    Everyone else has had really good advice about starting with a 400 page doc, particularly if it's complex. If it's just text with a couple illustrations every 4 or 5 pages, it might be do-able, but if it's a complex document with lots of stuff on every page, it could be tricky.
    Try this link for the official converter's guide.
    http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/indesign/articles/indcs3ip_quarkmigration.pdf
    Some practical tips for the beginning XPress converter that I learned the hard way...
    - Cmd-shift-click pulls stuff off the master page.
    - The lack of master anchors may limit your ability to accomplish certain master page layouts (with prelinked text boxes) that are easy to do in XPress. Everyone here will tell you to simply use the margins to control your text flow, which may or may not work well for your particular case.
    - Always scroll around a document by holding down option+spacebar. This insures that you will get the scroll hand tool every time instead of accidentally inserting a zillion spaces into your text.
    -Cmd-shift-A deselects everything in a text box so that you can select another tool. There is no next/prev tool shortcut, but rather keys for each tool. (T is text, A is the white arrow, V is the black arrow)
    - You "thread frames" rather than "link text boxes" despite how I wrote this. :)
    - Don't set text wrap to effect only the stuff underneath in the prefs because...
    - All text should go in a separate layer on top of the graphics layer because...
    - InDesign dynamically resolves transparency effects at print time, which means if part of your text is layered under a transparent element it may get rasterized.
    - If you need to get text to show even when it's on top of an object with a text wrap, select the text box and check the "Ignore text wrap" option.
    - Overprint Preview is your friend. It'll help show you all those things that you didn't notice were going to print strangely before you commit them to print. (Overprinting white type, etc)
    - When you're just starting out, so is the Flattener Preview because you will start to get a feel for what is going to be bitmapped and what won't.
    - XPress documents imported into InDesign should always be exported as Adobe InDesign Interchange and reimported one more time. .inx is the equivalent of the "thumb-nail drag" trick in XPress to clean up a document that is acting funny.
    - XPress documents with placed EPS files may come in with the "Non-printing object" attribute checked on some of the EPS graphics. There's a script floating around that Dave Saunders wrote to fix this. Also, turning Overprint Preview will help you spot this (look for the disappearing objects).
    - If you are placing EPS objects, be sure to set your import options to "Render preview from postscript" or your previews won't look right and/or may be deceiving.
    - Don't every base your paragraph styles off of "Basic Paragraph Style", because if it ever changes in another document your type will suddenly change when you paste it from one document to another.
    - Don't base anything off of "Basic Object Style" for the same reasons.
    - Your defaults change whenever your change the options in a palette/panel without anything selected. Curious why every new object you draw comes in with a drop shadow or a 3pt rule, for example? You accidentally set those options with nothing selected.
    - InDesign's paragraph composer may drive you (or your proof-readers) wonky because it will change the flow of text paragraph-wide if you redo a line of text. You can either adjust it for decent text flow and leave it alone OR turn it off by basing all your stylesheets on single-line composer. People in here will largely recommend option one, but if it doesn't work for your stuff, don't be afraid to disable it.
    - Make sure to upgrade to the latest CS3 update, because CS3 v5.00 had some fairly crashy behavior.
    - If CS3 feels really sluggish, try turning off page previews in the Pages palette.
    - CS3 and OS X 10.5 are not fully compatible yet.
    Best of luck! It's not really that big a change, but everything is slightly different so expect a bit of time to really get your feet under you.

  • Automated Textbox in InDesign CS5 ?

    Hi there,
    I'm currently working on a portfolio in InDesign CS5. I have already made a small version of this portfolio in Illustrator CS5. As for I am a visual artist and most of my work are architectural visualisations, I have a very simple and minimalistic way of captioning my images - the image takes the whole page and a small caption bar on the side gives some title and customer info. Using Illustartor, I could simply lay a solid rectangle effect as a text backgorund, which would adjust to the text, the way I want (e.g. add 10mm on the left, +5mm on the right, ...). It doesn't matter how long my text will be - the 10mm to the left will always be there. It looks like this:
    As for this rectangular backgorund is a real solid shape, it allows further effects (such as shadows) and opacity adjustment.  However, I don't succeed in making the same in InDesign - ist impossible? And if not - how can I achieve that?
    Thanks in advance,
    Helldoor

    If you are using OSX this AppleScript might work. Setup your caption box to be right justified with the right indent you need to clear the margin. Type or paste your caption text then run the script.

  • Tick Marks in Corner of Indesign Document

    Hi,
    I am making updates to an indesign document someone else created. There are two small tick marks in all 4 corners of the page (one vertical and one horizontal). The creater advised they were bleed marks. However, I looked in the Document Setup and found that the bleed/slug are both set at 0pt. I have done a lot of research and digging online without success. I also tried to look at the margins/guides, etc and did have much luck. Do you know what could be causing this? I would really like to remove them.
    Thank you!

    Please see the screenshot. The lines are in all 4 corners.  Thanks!

  • Is there a plug-in for Indesign Interactive PDF buttons which simulates the same control as Acrobat?

    I want to know if there is a third party out there making plug-ins for Indesign CS6 specifically for interactive PDF buttons and forms which allows for better control over text boxes.... ie. date formatting, 1-10 characters per text boxes, etc.

    Not that I've heard of. You'll have to tweak those features in Acrobat Pro.

    HELP!
    I am making a book in InDesign CS5. It contains 148 different ID documents. I'm ready to make my hi-res pdf to send to the print shop, however, each time I try to make it, I get the above error message. It appears to be exporting to pdf all the way through to the last document before the message come up. I have no idea which of the documents was recovered. When I click okay to recover, nothing opens. As a side note, I had no problems with making a lo-res pdf of it.
    Also I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but in the Book palette, I accidentally clicked the box to the left of one of the documents which "sets the Style Source". I didn't want to do that, and I don't know how to get it unclicked.
    I'm not experienced in booking in InDesign, so I don't know what to do next. I saw an earlier discussion about this error message, but I'm not sure it applies, since my InDesign is on my hard drive, not on a server. Its on a MacBook Pro with 16GB of RAM.

    Your suggestion of breaking up the export to pdf into sections of pages was excellent. I don't know why I didn't think of it...maybe because I was in panic mode.
    For anyone else who experiences this problem, I exported 50-page sections to pdf with no problem. I now have 7 hi-res pdfs, but that's no problem. The printer should have no problem dealing with it. No error messages came up.
    The only thing I can think of is that InDesign couldn't export that many documents (148) in the book palette to hi-res pdf, and it has no error message available to explain the cause—either outside ID's ability to process or out of memory, even though I have 16G of RAM.
    Thanks again for your help!
