Making Preferences Stick

I keep setting my preferences in Adobe Reader 10.1.1 for [Page Display > Page Layout > Single Page Continuous].  However, every time I launch Adobe Reader, it reverts to [View > Page Display > Single Page View] even though the preferences still indicate my setting.  This is very annoying.  How can I fix this?  Or is this a bug in Adobe Reader.

Settings in a PDF document's Initial View tab of the PDF's Document Properties trumps Reader / Acrobat Preferences.
Within the Initial View tab a page layout and magnification can be specified.
Note that you'd need Acrobat to view the Initial Tab in a PDF's Document Properties.
Be well...

  • Making image stick to one element of a movie

    Hello everyone,
I'm just starting with Adobe Premiere and have come across a big challenge for me now.
I have a very short movie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqG6yLnzBR8&feature=youtu.be and a small thermostat on the wall.
THe thermostat becomes bigger and bigger, simultaneously circling. My task is to add a company logo at the bottom of that thermostat.
Obviously the logo must stick to that thermostat and circle with it so that nobody notice that its an applied layer.
Is it possible to achieve that in Adobe Premiere?
Thank You for any piece of advice.

  • Keys are sticking on a bluetooth keyboard

How do you take apart the wireless bluetooth keyboard to clean it? Some keys are sticking after it was cleaned.

I used some commercial workstation/keyboard spray cleaner. Previous to that some coffee has been spilled on it. However, I was able to lift some keys up a little and that seems to have broken whatever was making it stick.
I was wondering though, just in case something did happen that I needed to get into the keyboard, how I could take it apart.
    Thanks for the response.

  • Credentials Not Sticking

We've had our iTunes U site up and running for a few weeks now so we could demo it to various groups. Now that I'm finally getting ready to really build out the site, I can't get any of the new credentials that I'm making to stick. Whenever I log in as a user who should have Edit access under these new credentials, it never gives me access to see the corresponding course. The icon just doesn't show up. Here's a sample of a credential that works:
    CLASSAdmin@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:uh.edu
    Here's a sample of a credential that doesn't:
    AthleticsAdmin@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:uh.edu
The structure for where the course pages should be are the same: they're both on the main welcome page. At the main welcome page level, every user has download permission. On the course pages themselves, I've set it up so that the area administrator has access to Edit. Course A, which I set up a few weeks back using the CLASSAdmin credential is working fine. The one I set up yesterday with the exact same permission scheme for AthleticsAdmin is not. Any ideas?

Not sure what's fixed, but seems to be working now. Thx.

  • Preferences not honored

I find a web page showing Flash content (since Macromedia has
yet to provide a client-side utility for configuring their Flash
Player AX control). I right-click and hit the Advanced button which
opens a new browser to Macromedia's web pages that display the
configuration manager. I then go under the Global Storage Settings
Panel and set to zero the cache size for local .sol cookie files
from sites and also enable the option to Never Ask Again. Sounds
good in that sites won't be able to leave their .sol cookies on my
    host but it doesn't work.
As a test and after setting the cache to zero (so supposedly
no .sol cookies will get left on my host), I visit a test site (
    http://www.mystrevelation.com/).
I click on the Skip Intro to get to their next page. Then I do a
search on .sol files on my host and lo and behold there is
    "C:\Documents and Settings\<myProfile>\Application
    Data\Macromedia\Flash
    Player\macromedia.com\support\flashplayer\sys\#mystrevelation.com\settings.sol".
I exit the browser (IE) figuring that maybe the .sol file is
allowed as a per-session cookie and that it will get purged when I
exit the browser. Nope, that site-specific .sol cookie file
    remains.
So much for the Flash Player complying with its own settings.
I have also noticed that eventually those settings are completely
ignored and set back to their install-time defaults. After a few
months when the topic of .sol cookies comes up again, I look at my
preferences and none of them are set the way they were and instead
    are back to their defaults.
A similar problem is that I will clean up the directories
where some .sol cookies were saved after setting the configuration
to delete all those sites. Under the Website Storage Settings Panel
panel in its configuration manger, I deleted all sites. Yet when I
    look under "C:\Documents and Settings\<myProfile>\Application
    Data\Macromedia\Flash
    Player\macromedia.com\support\flashplayer\sys", there they are
again when I next visit a page with Flash content. There are no
.sol files within them (i.e., they are empty) but all those
directories get recreated for sites that had previously save .sol
cookie files on my host. Yeah, like I really want to want disk
space in the file system to restore empty directories, especially
when I am zeroing out the Flash cache and not allowing any site to
save the .sol cookie on my host. While 9 of these empty directories
get recreated, only 2 are listed under the Website Storage Settings
Panel panel. Well, they aren't all empty. My ISP's home page
(www.comcast.net) uses Flash and leaves a .sol file under
    "C:\Documents and Settings\<myProfile>\Application
    Data\Macromedia\Flash
    Player\macromedia.com\support\flashplayer\sys\#www.comcast.net\settings.sol"
(but I'm in the browser while posting this message so maybe it
doesn't get deleted until I finally exit the last instance of IE).
The settings won't stick for long. .sol cookies are still
getting put onto my host. Directories (mostly empty) are getting
    recreated for prior visited sites.

Edit: the preferences were ghosted because of the renaming of the app. Un-renaming the app and they're back. The preferences stick on a new admin account.
if the preferences stick on the new account the problem is local to your main account. it could be some corrupt cache or preference files although I don't know which ones.
    It seems so.
Locking the files did not work.
i suspect it did. when you lock those files, the system can not change them and whatever changes are made from software system preferences are not written to the hard drive. do the files remain locked when you log out/in?
    This is what I did.
    1). Uncheck setting.
2). Quit and reopen SUPP. The setting is still unchecked. It appears that my settings have been saved to disk.
    3). Quit SUPP
    4). Lock the com.apple.SoftwareUpdate plist.
5). Open SUPP. The offending preference has reset!
6). Quit and open SUPP. Offending preference still on.
7). Uncheck preference with file locked.
8). Quit and open SUPP. Unchecked preference still unchecked.
9). Log out and in. Preference rechecked.
So you see, locking does not work. It appears that the act of locking the plist actually resets the preference, or causes SUPP to revert to different version of the plist which is wrong and which is not set by the Software Preference Pane GUI.

  • Another Newbie, how can Mac OSX Server help my School?

Hi all, the school where i work has just taken delivery of 11 brand new macs. 8 iMacs, 2 MBP's and a mini. What i'm interested to know and if anybody is just prepared to bullet point, is how we can really benefit from this software.
Clearly it's going to be tricky administering 11 macs individually, so maybe sacrifice the mini to become the server. Heres some basic questions and if anybody has any other comments they can add from experience i can approach the school with my findings?
    1) Can multiple third party software installations be initiated. i.e. we have Adobe CS3 can a multiple install be initiated over the network or would all machines have to be updated individually.
    2) A big concern is storage, if a server is used can files be stored locally on the machines or would they have to be stored on the server, Xserve isn't on the cards unfortunately. Is it like a windows server where the profile is stored on the server and then just downloaded to the appropriate machine. For the meantime we ideally need to store locally or on firewire drives to keep storage issues to a minimum. It's no problem making students stick to the same mac if we can make this happen.
    3) Could backups be initiated from all machines to some sort of storage facility.
    4) I'm guessing it's easy to lock machines down, it seems very easy to do on standard OSX so i'm guessing it would be even easier on server.
Being a school i would be grateful for any advice or recommendations on how administering this small network would be easiest done. I'm an experienced mac user but no in a network scenario, i am however keen to learn.
    Thanks in Advance

Hi, I'll give a go at answering your questions.
First, how tricky it will be to administer 11 macs individually truly depends on your users. I've setup offices where the employees were intelligent people who weren't interested in hacking around on their machines, they just did their work. All their user accounts had admin privileges (along with an admin account on each machine that only the appropriate people knew the password for) so they could easily change preferences and do updates, etc. I barely had a problem with them. If you have a group who are all into surfing naughty bits and bittorrenting and other things, then you'll need to lock them down. If you are going to lock them down, you can still do it without the aid of a server by having an admin account on each machine, but you will have to touch each machine periodically to install updates and such. If you do go with server, then you can manage a lot more centrally. By the nature of you having 11 machines and the limit of OS X client of only 10 file sharing connections at a time, you're almost forced into OS X Server and the Unlimited version at that.
    1) Yes you can initiate software installations simultaneously, but it will require you to capture and package those installations, and use something along the lines of FileWave, radmind, Apple Remote Desktop, etc. to perform the push. For the number of users you're dealing with, it's probably much easier to host the installer on the network, and screen control each system and run the install (along with entering the serial numbers for each one). Any future updates could be easily performed with a terminal script and access to the updater files.
    2) You can store your files anywhere you want, locally or on the server (or even on a NAS). Obviously it makes sense to host them on the server (or other central location) if they are collaborative files (ie., everyone works on them or needs to see them). Your question about the windows profiles doesn't make sense with the storage part, but you can choose how to run your server/client model. You can have roaming profiles where the users' home directories are stored on the server and they can login from any machine. Or you can have individual machines and the server only authenticates the user for access to mail/file/whatever services.
    3) Yes. Either by using Time Machine if it gets fixed in 10.5.2, Retrospect (which I don't trust and haven't for years), rsync (which is free and built into the OS and is cross platform so you could even back up Windows clients), or some other commercial client like PresSTORE.
    4) Yes, as I stated above you can lock down the client machines and of course server can be locked down to avoid people from messing it up.
I know you mentioned an Xserve isn't an option, but how about a MacPro tower? In your situation, I would setup a MacPro with a single 2.8Ghz Quad core chip, Unlimited MacOS X Server, 2GB RAM, and 2 x 500 GB SATA drives for $3648 (cheaper if you get the drives from elsewhere). If there's the chance you could migrate other school services to the new server (email, websites, shared calendar, jabber server, etc.) you could upgrade the processor and memory (RAM can also be had cheaper from a 3rd party). You setup the two drives in a mirror RAID for fault protection and it would contain your OS and your file shares. Then get 2 external firewire drives, at least 500 GB each. Configure your network backups (and the server itself) to backup to an external drive, leave it attached for a week, and at the end of the week, eject the drive, disconnect it, and plug in the other drive (both should be named the same). Then take the first drive off-site (to another building on campus, etc.). Repeat every week. This gives you a rotating off-site backup. If even that is not an option, the mini could be the server, but you definitely want to max the RAM, and buy one of those nice mirrored RAID enclosures from OWC as your main drive, along with the 2 externals for rotating backup.
I hope that's answered some of your questions, feel free to ask more if need be. May I ask where you are located? If by some amazing chance we're close by, I might be more of a help. Take care and good luck.

  • Setting up columns to remain in same position when the window is opened

Does anyone know how to save column preferences after they are customized in Mac Mail, Itunes, or any file or folder in OS 10.4? I called Apple care and they didn't know. For example, when I set up my incoming e-mail columns spacing in that window, when I quit mail and then reopen the columns settings are not the way I set them up. I've noticed that this happens in any of the columns after I go to view columns in the menu bar, set up my and customize preferences of what I want to show up and the width of each column, yet there seems to be no way to retain the settings. I have tried quitting the program, closing the file or window, restarting the computer etc, but when I return the same old default column settings appear, or appear differently than I left them. Anybody know how to 'save' column preference settings so they stay the way I left them when I closed the window, or if this is a poor software design in OS 10.4????

Making folders stick to columns and keeping the width & height is easy.
Hold down your option key when you adjust them.
With one exception and that's your Hard Drive (at least for me it is).
My Hard Drive will retain its width & height but not the column width.

  • [Solved] Gnome-mplayer configuration?

Hi all. i am trying to configure mplayer, specifically gnome-mplayer to play dvd's but it doesn't seem to work. If I run
    mplayer dvd://
things run fine, however I am trying to set it up so anyone in the house can just go to gnome-mplayer and start playing a dvd from there. When I try to configure gnome-mplayer through Preferences in the menu, it doesn't stick. So I tried looking into configuring it through the file at $HOME/.mplayer/config and then trying to play the dvd through different gnome-mplayer options through the "Disc" menu, but it doesn't play. The man page is a little daunting and slightly confusing as well, for example I don't know what it's talking about when it mentions "gmplayer," also there is no "gui.conf" file anywhere by default as far as I can tell. The wiki page says nothing about gnome-mplayer which doesn't help either.
Reading from the man page, if I had to take a guess I have to create a section
    [gnome-mplayer]
and put the options for it under there. If I had to take futher guesses, all the options that say "Mplayer Only" on the man page won't work with a GUI such as gnome-mplayer? I need someone to point me in the right direction.

So the preferences in gnome-mplayer live in RAM without being written to a file? See if there's some permission problem preventing it from making the preferences stick, because this sounds like a bug.
Oh and gmplayer is a crappier GUI that used to come with the mplayer package. You can try it by recompiling with --enable-gui.

  • Doesn't retain any settings

My Safari 3 Beta (S3b) doesn't retain any settings... homepage, window size, bookmarks, tab settings (anything in the preferences for that matter) when I close and reopen S3b. I posted a bug report, but anyone have any ideas here?
    Joe Mac
    WinXP SP2

fairly experimental advice, since i've only had the puppy installed on belladonna for a few ... hours, it would be still ...
... but let's check to see if this is an issue with damaged preference files.
    Quit Safari.
in XP, the Safari preference files live in the following two locations:
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Apple Computer\Safari
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\Safari
You might have to turn on "Show hidden files and folders" to find the preference folders (Application Data and Local Settings are "hidden" folders). Right-click "My Computer", select "Open", go "Tools > Folder Options". Click the "View" tab. The "Show hidden files and folders" radio button is in the center scrolling panel.
("username" here is the name of the user account on the PC that you're getting this problem in. for example, on belladonna "username" = "owner".)
drag those two folders to the desktop, and then try launching Safari again. (that should rebuild your preference folders.)
do changes to your preferences "stick" now, with fresh preference folders in place?

  • How to keep the Zoom level in Safari 7?

There is only one big win that's making me stick to Chrome over Safari: The zoom.
In Chrome when you zoom in a page (With Cmd +) the zoom level is stored in the cookies, or the history, or somwhere, and it stays the same level when you open again that page in another tab or if you close and open again Chrome. This simple feature makes it tremendously comfortable to navigate in big and wide screens.
This feature by itself is going to keep me using Chrome instead of Safari with all the new fancy and cool stuff they added in the new Safari 7. And yes, there is a "Trick" by using a .css style sheet customed to make a default zoom in all pages, but it's not good enough because some pages need different level of zoom.
So please, someone, make Apple correct this issue. It should't be complicated, it's as simple as that Safari remembers the latest zoom level you left in a web.
Because I believe that if people are leaving Safari behind is because it lacks this simple tools that make life much easier. And I believe it's in Apples philosphy to make technology to help people, isn't it?

It never worked the way Chrome works in Safari 6 either, but at least Safari 6 remembered the zoom level you'd set in a particular tab. With Safari 7 Apple has made the situation even worse. Now after setting the zoom level you want, it's forgotten when you click on a bookmark, and the page reverts to actual size. It really is infuriating having to zoom in all the time, and the CSS trick and the various zoom extensions don't work properly. Safari is all but unusable for me because of this issue. I've complained to Apple many times about it in the past, but now I've given up believing it'll ever change. It seems that Chrome will forever conquer Safari thanks to an easy-to-fix issue Apple refuses to fix.

  • HT2506 Change the Thumbnail view in Preview (Mac)

    Hi everybody!
I am wondering if there is the chance to change the thumbnails view  in order to display pdf pages on two or more columns, the same as in acrobat it is increasing or decreasing the size of the thumbnail window or zooming in/out in the same window.
    Thank you for your support!
    Best regards!

Minimally, are you aware that Artists view has an Artwork Size slider under the View Options menu item?  These preferences stick with the application.
I mucked around for a while before I realized that View Options items change for each view.  Still smallish in the Artists right column at maximum, but better than nothing, and I would have expected to expand the graphics view all the way up to a full window in Albums view, which doesn't seem possible.
Also, I noted there doesn't seem to be a way to view full size album art other than selecting the art icon of the currently song, up at the top.  Still there under Get Info in the song record but I couldn't figure out how to view anything larger but through the icon at the top.  Not a big deal overall, but I have occasionally opened multiple album art and tiled them to check details side by side.
Alsoalso, I thought I could put the album art full screen like an audio slide show and blot out the background, but that seems to have disappeared.  Again, not that important to me, but odd.

  • Is there any way to see unread mails/chains with unread mails on iPad?

I use iPad with MS Exchange and have many emails and have not found a way to work with chains with unread emails. Is there a way to do it? Maybe together with MSE?

In Finder, just drag the divider bar further to the right while holding down the option key to see the full label (using the 'option' key will make the width preference stick).
On the desktop icon, hold down 'contro'l and click on the icon. Choose 'Show view options' then make the grid spacing larger.

  • Broken "H" Key

OK, so here is the problem. A few months ago, I had a problem with my "H" key and it kept sticking.. I brought it to the genius bar where the guy popped it off, removed whatever was making it stick, and then put it back on. Ever since then, it seems that the key likes to pop off my itself. It doesn't come completely off, but the right side will come up and then I will have to press it down to snap it into place. This will keep it for a few strokes and then up it pops again. Clearly the guy at the genius bar did something and I'm not too happy, but is there anything they will be able to do if I bring it back to the apple store? It will have to be a different store since I currently live in a different state than the one I originally brought it to. Thanks!

  • Show ONLY my INBOX, not underlying folders

How do I get one-click access to my INBOX, without the underlying folders?  Currently the hub shows all of my unread emails in the main view, including all of the unread emails that were automatically filed in other folders (due to Outlook rules I have set up).  In order to access my inbox only, I have to click on my email account, and then drop down to the Inbox, and that resets itself to the main view every time I leave it.
I have rules set up in Outlook for a reason - I don't want to be bothered with less important items until I need to action them (sometimes 50 or more emails a day!).  The rules allow me to do this, but the Hub circumvents it and shows these emails to me anyway. I get why the Hub is there, and I get that many users will like this feature, but I need a way to have my INBOX ONLY preference stick, so I don't see these already-filed, but unread emails until I need to.
    Any suggestions??
    Thanks!

In your Settings >Accounts >your-email-account there is a setting for "Edit Email Folder Settings. Open that up and uncheck the folders you don't want to sync.
