Manage AUR updates via pacman?

Ok, so there's a program I want, thats in the AUR.
http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=29499  (thats the app)
And after doing some reading this time, I installed base-devel via pacman, then I stopped, because since this is a nightly build, I would want to automate this process as much as possible.
So, in short... since after the package is compiled, it looks like it's install in this example (pacman -U foo-0.1-i686.pkg.tar.gz    ) by using pacman.
Is it possible once installed, then. that when I perform a pacman -Syu, it will check that package for a new version in the AUR?
If that's not possible with the software, is it possible to make a script that will automatically download the new tarball, compile, and upgrade the version via pacman? I'm not very good at scripts yet..
Thanks!

I'll give that a try. I had read through those in the wiki but they all seemed to be able to automate the build system, I didn't see one that would tie updates of the AUR's into the pacman -Syu command. I'll give yaourt a try first and see if that does what I'm looking for.
Thanks again! (and sorry for all the questions, first day with arch, lol)

  • [SOLVED]desktop e-svn updates via pacman, laptop won't update:

I don't understand this. Back in Sept I did an "pacman -Syu" on my desktop. This included updating E17. I know because I made a note of it due to a problem with my preferred themes being incompatable with the new edje format... (I wasn't happy with the themes I could make work, because they didn't make it easy for a keyboard oriented user to see which if any button would be activated by pressing enter. And so I decided to forgo updating my laptop until I had a solution. Recently I discovered the existence of the command "edje_convert" which salvaged my preferred themes. And so I just recently did an "pacman -Syu" on the laptop. But while my desktop is currently at Version: 57289-1 (built Feb 25 2011) I can't seem to get my laptop to update past Version: 50356-1 (built Jul 19 2010)
Both use the x86_64 architecture, So I'm at a loss to explain why "pacman -S e-svn" says it's up to date and reinstalling only wants 13.79MB. Tried it anyway but still at 50356-1...
    Suggestions anyone?

" ahhh DuH! Which way did my brain go?"
You may just have hit on the crux of the problem. A quick peek says that the laptops mirror list was last generated in June of 2010... The desktops was generated in Dec... Will try updating my laptops mirror list. Then I'll post the results.
As to why I didn't think of that, I plead an overabundance of mental flatulence.

Everything was fine until I manually installed package-query and yaourt and now I am unable to update/search/install packages via pacman or yaourt.
Earlier I was having trouble installing the package-query and yaourt packges using pacman so had to install them manually and now it wont connect to the repos.
My eth0 is up, the proxies are set, all browsers work so no problem from the network side.

Once you're done, disable the repository though because everything except for yaourt is out-of-date by at least a month.
Don't ever suggest that. The repo is 100% useless since it is trivial to install yaourt from aur. Also yaourt/package-query in that repo is often broken/outdated.
Also it is not relevant to op's problem anyway. There were some routing issue to leseweb the other day, I also noticed it. Just switching mirror works fine.

  • Cannot install patches via Connection Manager or Update Manager

I tried installing 137 outstanding updates via Update Manager, but they all failed complaining about digital signatures not being verified.
Then i tried using the online "Connection Manager". I managed to queue the 137 jobs no problem, but then they have been stuck in a pending state all day. Is there something else I'm supposed to do?
Is there any way I can just download a patch cluster like I used on all the previous versions of Solaris... it would be so much simpler. :-)

  • Disconnect WSUS server and Process of Approving Updates via Metadata.

    Hi Folks:
I have recently setup 2 WSUS servers.   The first one has connectivity to the Internet and of course has access to Microsoft updates.   The second WSUS server is part of a disconnected network.   Both WSUS servers are supporting client workstations
of various operating system versions.   The connected WSUS server is fairly easy, from a management viewpoint.   I simply check to see what updates are "Needed" and I approve them for download.   However, the disconnected WSUS server
is the one that I need some advice on.   I want to have a fairly simply procedure for the disconnected WSUS server, but here is the procedure that I think would work:
Transfer metadata and updates via disc from the connected WSUS server to the disconnected WSUS server (using documented export/import procedure).
Check to see what is "Needed" updates on the disconnected WSUS server, once the WSUS server has had a chance to absorb all the imported metadata and updates.   This means that the disconnected WSUS server has determined from it's supported
client workstations, what updates are required.
Generate a list of those "Needed" updates in some form, so that I can now approve those updates on the CONNECTED WSUS server for download.
Once those updates have been downloaded to the connected WSUS server, transfer the updates and metadata again to the disconnected WSUS server.   Approve those updates, so that they can now be sent out to the client workstations on the disconnected
    network.
If that is my procedure (can someone like Lawrence Garvin), please let me know, if that sounds correct.   I'm concerned about the double export/import of the metadata and updates.
Also, I'm wondering if it would be better to have separate connected WSUS server for supporting the disconnected WSUS to keep things straight.
    For example:
One connected WSUS servers supporting the set of client workstations, that are on the connect WSUS server's network.
One disconnected WSUS server supporting the set of client workstations that are on the disconnected WSUS server's network.
One more connected WSUS server, that would be used to download and transfer metadata and updates to the disconnect WSUS server.   The advantage in keeping this separate, is that you would never confuse approved updates between the connected network
client workstations and the disconnected network client workstations.  Especially, if they have different versions of software, that require updating.
    Any input would be appreciated.

You will likely also want to configure your WSUS server to "Download express installation files." under the "Update Files and Languages," setting on your options.
I will unequivocally disagree with this statement, for several reasons:
First, there's nothing that needs to be deployed that would use Express Installation Files anyway. Express Installation Files were designed to facilitate the deployment of Very Large Updates (read: SERVICE PACKS) across slow-speed links by significantly
reducing the size of the binary that must be downloaded by the CLIENT. There are NO service packs in the catalog that won't already be installed on any client system.
Second, in exchange for that ability of clients to download less, it significantly increased the size of the binary that must be downloaded by the SERVER from Microsoft. Express Installation Files will cause hundreds of gigabytes of extra binaries to be
downloaded, which will need to be transferred to the disconnected server. None of which will actually ever be used.
Third, most disconnected networks do not include WAN links, so the primary purpose of Express Installation File is contra-indicated by the very scenario being discussed.
Otherwise by default you might get just an installer downloaded onto the WSUS server and clients might still need internet access to download the actual package contents.
It would seem that you do not correctly understand Express Installation Files.
There is an in-depth explanation of Express Installation Files in the WSUS Deployment Guide. For additional information see
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd939908(v=ws.10).aspx#express
I also would not recommend a internet facing WSUS server just to provide updates to the disconnected WSUS server as that will also need to download a full copy of the content to that server when it is likely already downloaded onto your internet
    / production WSUS server anyway.
Seemingly you are also not actually familiar with the documented guidance for how to manage disconnected networks. An Internet-facing (connected) WSUS server is *exactly* how this is done.
You may also find this part of the Deployment Guide to be useful reading:

  • Efi update via usb flash drive?

I would like to know if there is a way to perform an efi update via a usb flash drive?

tried the latest 2010 build, got the same problem: 'missing operating system' and again in ubuntu the flash drive is an unknown filesystem.
tried again on a different computer and got the same error.. how frustrating!
edit: just to clarify i used the following command 'sudo dd if=path/to/image.img of=/path/to/device' i also changed directory to where the image file is and tried again without absolute referencing the path for 'if=' both of which returned that the command had been completed successfully in terminal.
edit: tried using again with a different USB stick (Maxell 4GB), again terminal returned 'x amount of files successfully copied to sdc1'.
.. something different happened this time, i didn't get the same error as before, instead the text 'grub' appears with a blinking cursor. nothing else.

hi, there, i got my iphone4 updated via wifi n its downloaded, its shows when i check the software update n when i install it, it shows verifying the software n after a couple of seconds comes back with "error while installing ios6" failed so many attempts and even tried to reset the phone, but no use, then i tried latest updated itunes too, can u believe it, it took ages to download n when it was 880mb of the 899mb file, error occured , so many failed attempts, can some one tell me what to do ? are there any issues with iphone4 updates? m scared to update it now, but really wanna get it on my phone.

I have experienced a similar error with the iPhone 4S.  The new version of iTunes will not let me restore the phone, it must be updated and nothing appears to be happening.  Suffice it to say I am not amused.  Apple needs to work this out - I had trouble updating to 8.0.2 as well.

  • 1st gen iPod Touch with iOS 3.1.3 - update via wi-fi?

That's basically it.  I found my old 1st gen iPod Touch and wanted to update the iOS, but I am away from my computer with iTunes.
    I do have wi-fi though.
I tried via Settings->General->Update.  But it doesn't have an update option in settings.
    Anyone?

A 1G iPod Touch can not be updated past iOS 3.1.3.  Only the 3G and 4G iPod touch models can run iOS 5 or later, which added in the ability to update via the Settings app.
