Managing Users Across Numerous Servers

Hey all, got a question.
I have 6 servers that my company uses to host all of the media we use on a daily basis. We're tightening security around here, so I'm setting them up to allow each of our 80 users to admin their own passwords. Seems simple, yeah?
Well, I first tried to set up an Open Directory server to do the user and password managing. It is/was a 10.5.2 Server. All of the servers pointing to it are 10.4.11. Worked okay when I first implemented it, but then crashed and burned horribly. Got some really cryptic errors on the 10.5 side, and it basically stopped working. Because we can't afford ANY downtime at my company, I scrapped it, and am doing it on a server level.
I have the first server up and working. Everyone has a login, and everyone can admin their own passwords. So, this leaves me with five more servers to set up.
I don't really want everyone to have to go through the same steps to changs their passwords for every one of those.
I know that you can export user lists from the WGM, but it doesn't retain passwords.
Any thoughts on how I should proceed?
Thanks in advance!

The "Password Server" you are looking for is there in the Open Directory Master.
Set up the user accounts, including user-changeable passwords on the Open Directory Master, and Mac OS X Server software will do all the replication and updating to all the other Open Directory Replicas. You only need enter the User Info once, on the Open Directory Master, and it will be quickly and automatically replicated to all the Open Directory Replicas. The users can change their passwords and any other attributes at will, and all User info on all Servers are updated quickly. (With six servers, you can set it to be essentially instantly.)
For this to work as expected, the User Accounts should be created with Workgroup Manager in a Network Accessible Shared Directory that has a Network Mount record. Then the Users are Network Users, rather than Local Users, and can log in from any Server or Workstation and use the resources their Username and Group allows them.
Six servers could easily support login (but probably not the file volumes you are serving) for over a thousand Users. There is no way a person could keep that much info updated if the account info had to be manually replicated. For your network, you would be using features developed for Server networks with thousands of Users, to service your handful of users.
This Open Directory Master/Replica setting only refers to Open Directory info. There is no need for any thing to be manually replicated on each Server. They can and should have their own unique information in other areas.

  • Splitting up a job for 140k+ users across multiple servers

    Hello,
    I am pretty new to Powershell and want to learn more about scaling stuff and just started working with jobs.
    In this particular case I am just doing mass enable or disable at a per user level.  The other script I need to do this with grabs and checks values on around 6000 distribution groups and using the current values and type it creates new commands
    to add/remove certain users or permissions in bulk with Invoke-Expression.  I *think* it would probably be best in my case to run these across servers as well.
    Basically what I am looking at is:
    Using one large list/array, counting it, splitting it, using the resources it has available with jobs.
    One of the problems I have had with this but seems I have mostly figured out is how I combine or 'foreach' several different values that may need to be applied to separate objects on certain servers with certain users and certain attributes.
    Last night I ran the first script that could do that but it took me awhile and looks like a wreck I am sure - but it worked!
    Now to tackle size.
    Thank You

    Hi Paul,
    looking good so far. Did a little rewrite of what you posted:
    Function Disable-Stuff
    Param (
    [Parameter(Position = 0, Mandatory = $true)]
    [string]
    $file,
    [Parameter(Position = 1)]
    [ValidateSet('CAS', 'MBX', 'ALL')]
    [string]
    $servertype = "CAS"
    # Collect server lists
    $servers = @()
    switch ($servertype)
    "CAS" { $servers += Get-ClientAccessServer | Select -ExpandProperty name }
    "MBX" { $servers += Get-MailboxServer | select -ExpandProperty name }
    "ALL"
    $servers += Get-ClientAccessServer | Select -ExpandProperty name
    $servers += Get-MailboxServer | select -ExpandProperty name
    # Remove duplicate names (just in case)
    $servers = $servers | Select -Unique
    default { }
    # Calculate set of operations per server
    $boxes = ($servers).count
    $content = Get-Content $file
    $split = [Math]::Round(($content.count / $boxes)) + 1
    # Create index counter
    $int = 0
    # Split up task
    Get-Content $filepath -ReadCount $split | ForEach {
    # Store file content in variable
    $List = $_
    # Select Server who does the doing
    $Server = $servers[$int]
    # Increment Index so the next set of objects uses the next Server
    $int++
    # Do something amazing
    # ... <-- Content goes here
    Disable-Stuff "c:\job\disable.txt" "CAS"
    Notable changes:
    Removed the test variables out of the function and added them as parameters
    Modified the Parameters a bit:
    - $file now is mandatory (the function simply will not run without it)
    - The first parameter will be interpreted as the file path
    - The second parameter will be interpreted as Servertype
    - $Servertype can only be CAS, MBX or ALL. No other values accepted
    - $Servertype will be set to CAS unless another servertype is specified
    you if/ifelse/else construct has been replaced with a switch (I vastly prefer them but they do the same functionally
    I removed the unnecessary temporary storage variables.
    Appended a placeholder scriptblock at the end that shows you how to iterate over each set of items and select a new server each time.
    I hope this helps you in your quest to conquer Powershell :)
    Cheers,
    Fred

  • Managing the Principle and Mirrored DB's across 2 Servers.

    We have mirroring set up across 2 servers with a witness server.  A1, A2 and W1 respectively.  We have 16 Databases.  Can half of the DB's on A1 be the Principle, while A2 is the Principle for the other half?   Basically
    I want to understand if I can sort of balance the DB's across the 2 servers.  Some DB's being Principle on A1 and others on A2.

    Hi,
    Yes, you can configure some DB's being Principle on A1 and others on A2. Because Database Mirroring works at a database level.
    Please note that on a 32-bit system, database mirroring can support a maximum of about 10 databases per server instance because of the numbers of worker threads that are consumed by each database mirroring session. However, these restrictions
    do not apply on 64-bit SQL Server systems.
    More information, please see:

  • IPTV load balancing across broadcast servers.

    I know that across Archive servers in the same cluster that IPTV control server will load balance , is there is a similar function with Broadcast servers. I know broadcast servers use a different delivery mechanism (Multicast). We have multiple broadcast servers that take in an identical live stream, but the only way to advertise thru a URL is a seperate URL per server. Is there some way to hide the multiple URL's to the client population?

    No. There is no way to load balance across multiple broadcast servers for live streams. Since this is going to be multicast, there should not be any additional load on the servers when the number of users are more.

  • Security info propagation across weblogic servers

    Hi,
    I have a requirement wherein my biz layer needs info abt logged in user profile. the web layer authenticates user using weblogic internal ldap and calls session bean of biz layer. In the biz layer i m able to retrieve the loggedin userid using sessionContext.getCallerPrincipal(). But i do need more info like user_preferences,emp_id as well. Is there a way of setting these attributes in Context obj which gets propagated across weblogic servers transparently. Otherwise i need to modify all my session bean api to accept userPreferencesDTO as additional parameter.
    Please advise,

  • Manage windows across multiple displays?

    Anyone know of a solution to manage windows across multiple desktops? I was thinking of something similar to the ability to have certain apps open in certain spaces, as you can do in the Spaces preferences. I frequently use mirroring of my displays and then revert back to having both displays have separate desktop (its a HTPC mac). A script to move all windows back to the main display after I revert back from mirroring would be great.

    Actually, if you don't mind having two copies of the content files on the computer (one set for each user account), using home sharing between the two accounts to transfer the music into her account might be the best way to go.
    For the basic technique, see Chris CA's post:
    iTunes Home Sharing now works between users on same computer
    Once you've got the connection set up and you're in her account, when displaying the library you're transferring music from (the library in your account), for your later transfers go down to the bottom of the screen and in "Show:" select "Items not in my library".
    Once your music has transfered across to her library, she can delete the music from her library that she doesn't want. (That shouldn't affect the music in your library.)
    If you add music to your iTunes library, you can do the same to bring her library up-to-date with the new stuff (or vice versa, if she gets music into her library that you'd quite like in yours).

  • WinRMRemoteWMIUsers_ vs. Remote Management Users

    Hi,
    I'm not sure about the differences between these two local groups on a Windows Server 2012 or if they are nested somehow. Membership in one of these group is sufficient to access a remote server via Server Manager. I can see the 'Remote management users'
    group in the PSSessionConfiguration, but I cannot see the WinRMRemoteWMIUsers_. How does it work?
    Many thanks!

    See the following technet info:

    "The WinRMRemoteWMIUsers_ group allows running Windows PowerShell commands remotely whereas the Remote Management Users group is generally used to allow users to manage servers by using the Server Manager console."

  • How can HelpDesk manage users in multiple Organizations in OIM R2

    Hi All,
    I looking to satisfy a requirement for OIM 11g R2 where a helpdesk administrator can only manage users that belong to a particular institution. However, there are approximately 50% of users that belong to more than one institution, where helpdesk staff from each institution should be able to manage the user. Customer is currently
    doing this in Waveset by assigning users to orgs dynamically through rules which allows multiple virtual orgs. OIM unfortunately has no way to assign a user to multiple orgs, making OOTB authorization management very difficult.
    How can a administrators from different org manage same User. If that user belongs to different org?
    How to achieve this in OIM R2?
    Thanks
    Akshat

    Hi Adr,
    I know the OIM Authorization is around the Organization, and a user can present in only one org in OIM.
    I wanted to know, can we force the authorization based on Department/Institutions rather than Org. I am thinking in reagards of OES Authorization policies.
    OIM unfortunately has no way to assign a user to multiple orgs, making OOTB authorization management slightly difficult.
    I am looking to determine the best approach to accommodate this requirement. Due to the high number of users that reside within multiple institutions, leveraging organizations will not work. Asa far i know OES APM should be able to accommodate this, but could not find any solid guidance in the Oracle training or Oracle by Example documentation.
    Any thoughts?

    Abhishek Madan

    Hi Abhishek,
    According to your description, my understanding is that the User Profile Synchronization service stuck on ‘Starting’ or ‘Stopping’.
    Please check whether you installed SQL 2012 Native Client (Pre-requisites) on SharePoint server. If yes, download and install SQL 2008 R2 Native Client from the below location:
    http://download.microsoft.com/download/9/1/3/9138773A-505D-43E2-AC08-9A77E1E0490B/1033/x64/sqlncli.msi
    From the SharePoint server ->control panel -> add/Remove programs , please confirm that the SQL 2008 Native Client is listed.
    Make sure that the farm account is a member of the Administrators group on the server on which you are trying to start the User Profile Synchronization service, then restart the SharePoint Timer Service.
    Set the FIM services to "Local System" before starting the service.
    There is a troubleshooting for User Profile Synchronization Service start issues, please have a look at:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg750257(v=office.14).aspx
    Here are some similar posts for you to take a look at:

  • Sap UM connector 9.1.2 trouble with "SAP User Management User Recon" task

    Hello All,
    i have a problem with Sap UM Connector version 9.1.2.
    OIM version 11.1.1.5
    Windows 2008 R2
    Problem is:
    Then accounts in Sap are created through direct provisioning feature of connector everything works ok (subsequent update or delete an account).
    But if a user account is created in Sap using Sap GUI, scheduled task "SAP User Management User Recon" of connector doesn't create reconciliation event to link user.
    Sometimes it does though, but for one user account created using Sap GUI in OIM created two reconciliation events, so corrsponding user in oim have two records for resource SAP.
    In this reconciliation events, one have full set of attributes (Login, First Name, Last Name, E Mail, etc), another one - just these 3 attributes: IT Resource, User ID, Lock.
    "SAP User Management Delete Recon" scheduled task works ok then user account has been deleted using Sap Gui.
    How one can troubleshoot such behavior?
    Can anyone advise please?

    resolved the issue by updating sap um connector to version 9.1.2.5

  • Manage machines across subnets?

    What steps do I need to take to be able to manage clients across subnets? I need to be able to wake clients that are not on my local subnet (my office is in one subnet and the clients are distributed all over a university campus with subnets that correspond to buildings). Is there anything that I can do to make that happen? My admin machine is using ARD 2.2 on Tiger.2 and the clients are ARD 2.2 Client on Tiger.2. I used to be able to wake the machines to gain access in the 2.0 version of ARD, but not anymore... Help! Please!!!
    Thanx in advance!

    Waking a system requires that the router(s) pass Directed Broadcast, something most network administrators don't want to allow. If Directed Broadcast is blocked, there's no way any software can get the packet through to wake a sleeping system. Perhaps the network admins have made some changes that now block Directed Broadcast.
    If so, and you can't get your network admins to turn that on, the only solution will be to set your systems not to go to sleep except for the monitors.

  • JES Access Manager User Creation for Messanger

    Hi Everyone
    I installed JES 2005 Q4 on Solaris 10 x86 with schema 2 and Access Manager 7. The Directory Tree is as follows:
    Sol1.nucleussoftware.com:389
    dc=nucleussoftware,dc=com (34 acis)
    DSAME Users
    Internet
    People
    Groups
    Client Data
    services
    nucleussoftware.com
    People
    Groups
    o=Netscape Root (3 acis)
    cn=Schema (6 acis)
    cn=monitor (5 acis)
    cn=config (4 acis)
    Organization DN when I ran "configutil" after running comm_dssetup.pl, was specified o=nucleussoftware,dc=nucleussoftware,dc=com
    This is fresh installation and not any migration.
    Now I create user from Access Manager, http://sol1.nucleussoftware.com/amserver
    There are two organizations 1. Nucleussoftware and 2. Nucleussoftware->nucleussoftware.com
    So I have two locations to create users in People.
    When I create user from Access Manager and try to login into WebMail, I get Login Failed.
    But when I open "startconsole" or "mpsconsole" and open Messaging Server Console and in new user's property, Account Attribute, I mark the check box, and now try to login into WebMail, I get error message, "Mailbox is on a different server".
    I am missing one attribute that I used to get with schema 1 on iPlanet 5.2 for any user, Mail Server Address.
    Please tell me the exact method of creating a user for Messaging.
    Regards
    Amit Bist

    Access Manager was never intended to create working mail users. The Delegated Admin package is provided as part of JES, and that's what it is for, to manage users and groups. There's both a web interface, and a command-line interface, "commadmin"
    Or, you can examine the ldap entries for the automatically created accounts, and duplicate that. Messaging doesn't really care how the ldap entries get done, just so that they are done correctly.

  • Manage users and privleges is missing in security tab in rep admin 9.5

    hi not able to see  Manage users and privleges in security tab in rep admin is manage users and privleges in infa 9.5 is shifted to admin console or is it available with both the tools admin console.

    Thanks Neil - Problem solved and I´ve saved a couple of new Applescripts for checking and reset in case (and when) this happens again.
    Lets hope Apple discover the reason for random changes to file flagging and apply to a future update.
    Again, thanks for your quick response.

  • How to uninstall a Greasemonkey userscript in Firefox 3.6.16? Manage User Scripts box doesn't appear as before.

    I need to uninstall an old userscript installed through Greasemonkey. Usually I go via Tools-->Greasemonkey-->Manage User Scripts or right-click on the monkey icon on the bottom left and choose Manage User Scripts and get this large window where I can manage whatever userscripts I have on here, but now I only get the small Add-ons window with the monkey icon last in the row (after Plugins and Installation icons) and the white area below is completely empty (whereas for example under Extensions I can see and handle those). How do I do this/Why can't I get the 'usual' managing window to show??

    I also have this problem and it just started in the last week or so. It seems to be dependent on my home network and the problem only exists with firefox. I have used chrome and IE8 with no issues. I can verify tomorrow that it only exists in my network but one thing I was able to test is that the problem exists even on my linux boot. I am totally dumbfounded with this problem and I can't find anything that will allow the gmail page to load. All other pages I have tried load fine, all be it a little slower than normal but they load. If anyone knows of a difference between firefox and all other browsers on how it goes through the router I would appreciate the info cause I don't know of any differences.
