Many distinct values vs. few distinct values
Hello,
If I have a table with many millions of records and I query this table with a where clause on a column with a few distinct values, would it perform faster than this column with many, many distinct values? If so, could someone please help me understand why? The where clause would be like this simply:
where column1 = 'xyz'
Could you please answer for the cases where the column IS and ISN'T indexed?
Thanks!

Distinct Count of Non-null Values
I have a table that has one column for providerID and then a providerID in each of several columns if the provider is under a particular type of contract.
I need a distict count of each provider under each type of contract for every county in the US.
distinct count is almost always one more than the actual distict count because most counties have at least one provider that does not have a particular contract and the distict count counts the null value as a distict value.
I know I can alter the fields to have a zero for nulls, ask for a minimum count and then subtract 1 from the distict count if the minimum is zero, but I hope there is an easier way to figure distict counts of non-null values.
any suggestions?
Thanks,
JenniferHello,
*I need a distict count of each provider under each type of contract for every county in the US*
To the above requiremetn,
I will suggest the following approach.
Use group expert formula for country, contract and provider.
Now you will have the hierarchy to which level you want to apply distinct count. You can do it as suggested by ken hamady.

Grand Total with few NULL values in column.
Hi All,
In my requirement, I have few null values in the column and I have to show those null values as it is( can't use IfNull function).
Can I able to grand total in such scenerio..?
I am using OBIEE 11.1.1.3
Thanks,
ArchieHI Archie,
Are you using the "Grand Total" option that comes with the view?.I don't think there will be any issue , it will ignore the null values while calculating the total.

COUNT (*) tells how many rows are in a group. It has nothing to do with any values in any columns.
I think you want COUNT (DISTINCT sal) in this case. It will tell you how many different values of sal are in the group.

For some business requirements, users want to extract values from a multi-value enabled lookup column
and add items to another list based on each separate value. In contrast, others want to find duplicate values in the list and merge associated values to a multi-value enabled column and then
add items to another list based on the merged value. All of these can be achieved using SharePoint Designer 2013 Workflow.

Things to note
Steps to create Workflow
How to
extract values from a multi-value enabled lookup column and
add items to another list based on each separate value using SharePoint Designer 2013.
For example, they have three lists as below. They want to
extract values from the Destinations column
in Lookup2 and add items to Lookup3 based on each country and set Title to current item: ID.
Lookup1:
Title (Single line of text)
Lookup2:
Title (Single line of text), Destinations (Lookup; Get information from: Lookup1 in Title column).\
Lookup3:
Title (Single line of text), Country (Single line of text).
Important action
1. Loop Shape: SharePoint Designer 2013 support two types of loops: loop n times and loop with condition.
Loops must also conform to the following rules:
Loops must be within a stage, and stages cannot be within a loop.
Steps may be within a loop.
Loops may have only one entry and one exit point.
2. Utility Actions: It contains many actions, such as ‘Extract Substring from Index of String’ and ‘Find substring in String’.
Three scenarios
We need to loop through the string returned from the look up column and look for commas. There are three
scenarios:
1. No comma but string is non-empty so there is only one country.
2. At least one comma so there is at least two or more countries to loop.
3. In the loop we have consumed all the commas so we have found the last country.
Things to note
There are two things to note:
1. "Find string in string (output to Variable:index)" will return -1 if doesn't find
the searched for string.
2. In the opening statement "Set Variable: Countries to Current Item:Destinations" set the return
field as "Lookup Values, Comma Delimited".
Steps to create Workflow
Create a custom list named Lookup1.
Create a custom list named Lookup2, add column: Destinations (Lookup; Get information from: Lookup1 in Title column).
Create a custom list named Lookup3, add column: Country (Single line of text).
Create a workflow associated to Lookup2.
Add conditions and actions:
Start the workflow automatically when an item is created.
Add item to Lookup2, then workflow will be started automatically and create multiple items to lookup3.
See the below in workflow History List:

Lookup3:
Title (Single line of text), Country (Single line of text).
Lookup2:
Title (Single line of text), Test (Single line of text).
Important actions
"Call HTTP Web Service"
action: In SharePoint 2013 workflows, we can call a web service using a new action introduced in SharePoint 2013 named Call HTTP Web Service. This action
is flexible and allows you to make simple calls to a web service easily, or, if needed, you can create more complex calls using HTTP verbs as well as allowing you to add HTTP headers.
“Build Dictionary"
action:
The Dictionary variable type is a new variable type in the SharePoint 2013 Workflow.
The following are the three actions specifically designed for the Dictionary variable type: Build Dictionary, Count Items in a Dictionary and Get an Item from a Dictionary.
The "Call HTTP Web Service" workflow action would be useless without the new "Dictionary" workflow action.
Things to note
The
HTTP URI is set to https://sitename/_api/web/lists/GetByTitle('listname')/items?$orderby=Id%20desc and the HTTP method is set to “GET”. Then the list will be sort by Id in descending order.
Use Get
d/results(0)/Id form
Variable: ResponseContent (Output to
Variable: maxid) to get the Max ID.
Use Set
Variable: minid to Current List:ID to get the Min ID.
Use Copy from
Variable: destianation , starting at
1 (Output to
Variable: destianation) to remove the space.
Steps to create Workflow
Create a custom list named Lookup1.
Create a custom list named Lookup2, add column: Test (Single line of text).
Create a custom list named Lookup3, add column: Country (Single line of text).
Create a workflow associated to Lookup3.
Add a new "Build Dictionary" action
to define the http request header:
Add a Call HTTP Web Serviceaction, click on
this and paste your http request.
To associate the
RequestHeader variable, select the Call action property,
set the
RequestHeaders property to
RequestHeader:
In the Call action, click on
response and associate the response to a new
variable: ResponseContent (of type Dictionary).
After the Call action add Get item from Dictionary action to get the Max ID.
Add Set Workflow Variable action to get the Min ID.
Add Loop Shape (Loop with Condition) to get all the duplicate titles and integrate them to a string.
Create item in Lookup2.
The final Stage should look like this:
Start the workflow automatically when an item is created.
Add item to Lookup3, then workflow will be started automatically and create item to lookup2.

cancel). I only found this out when recreating your workflow on a similar, but much more complex list set.
To resolve this issue, I used another utility action (Extract Substring from Index of List) to clear out the whitespace. I configured it as "Copy from
Variable: Countries, starting at
1 (Output to Variable: Countries), which takes care of this issue in those few cases.
Otherwise, WOW! AWESOME JOB! Thanks! :) -
Accessing values during runtime in value mapping
Hi all,
We have a specific requirement , where in we have a set of fields coming from the source system. All the fields have values expect few. The few which don't have values are reserved for future use, and for each source field there is a corresponding target value and we need map them.
We have used value mapping here, but it doesn't work for fields which don't have values.
We have thought of accessing the fields which do not have values, dynamically or at runtime by connecting the database of the source system.
Is it possible to do this, if yes, please provide with your inputs and alternatives.
thanks,

[10g] Way to find least value greater than a value?
I have a simple (I think) question ...
Part 1:
Is there a way to determine the least value, among a set of values, that is greater than 0?
A couple of examples:
Set of values:
{0,1,2,3}
Return value:
1
Set of values:
{0,5,10,20,100}
Return value:
5
Set of values:
{1,4,9,11}
Return value:
1Part 2:
Same thing, but greater than some given value, not necessary 0.
Set of values:
{0,1,2,3}
Parameter value:
2
Return value:
3
Set of values:
{0,5,10,20,100}
Parameter value:
2
Return value:
5
Set of values:
{1,4,9,11}
Parameter value:
2
Return value:
4In particular, I'm looking for an efficient way of doing this. I believe I can do it with a set of CASE statements, but it gets really complex the more values you are comparing.
My first thought was to use the LEAST function, but that doesn't allow me a way to use a parameter.
Any suggestions?-- this section has been edited
And that's basically where I was heading. I was hoping there was a less complex way to do it... somehow replacing any zeros with an impossibly large number, without using case statements (something equivalent to the NVL function, but to replace any value with another), so that they'd never be less than anything, and then I could just use the LEAST function. The only way I can think of to do that though, would be to convert the numbers to strings, use REPLACE, and then convert them back to numbers, which doesn't seem less complex than the CASE statements, and most likely is worse performance-wise.
For example:
SELECT ord_nbr
, seq_nbr
, time_spent /
CASE WHEN comp_qty <= plan_qty
AND comp_qty <> 0
THEN comp_qty
WHEN comp_qty > plan_qty
THEN LEAST ( TO_NUMBER(REPLACE(TO_CHAR(ord_qty-scrap_qty),'0','999999999'))
, TO_NUMBER(REPLACE(TO_CHAR(plan_qty),'0','999999999'))
, TO_NUMBER(REPLACE(TO_CHAR(comp_qty),'0','999999999'))
ELSE 1
END AS unit_time
FROM ord_detail
;-- end of section edited (I posted before I had fully gone through the solution provided)
I checked the data, and though, theoretically all values could be zero, there are no instances where that happens. I think that, in the case all values were 0, I'd just want to use 1 instead.
Side note on the "big" problem behind this question....
My ultimate problem, (and if I end up needing help with that, I'll start a new post for it) is that the quantity data in our system has a fair amount of junk in it...values that can't be true. With this solution, I would assume that in any case where the quantity complete at a given step of a process is less than or equal to the quantity planned to be complete at that step, the value is good, which is not necessarily a correct assumption. Then, only in cases where something can't be true, like when quantity complete > the quantity planned, are when I would intervene with this solution to make a "best guess" at the correct value. There a few things related to this that I have to determine before I can figure out my next step.
We have another database (so we can keep things straight, I'll call the database I've been querying up til now DB1, and this other one, DB2) that has much more reliable quantity data and step data (sometimes it has steps that aren't in DB1) but its structure is complex, I'm rather unfamiliar with it, and it does not have time spent data. Additionally, some products have all their information in DB1, and none in DB2.
So my options are to:
1) ...try to learn the structure of the other database, find the data I need, and query both databases together, using this thread's solution to resolve any questionable data that does not exist in both systems, and skipping any steps that occur in DB2, but not DB1 (since they won't have any time data, which is ultimately what I'm after)
2) ...try to come up with a method to pre-"scrub" my data in DB1, based on some logical assumptions and looking at all steps in an order, so that I can then just query the scrubbed data...
3) ...use the solution from this thread, and assume that the bad data isn't enough to significantly impact my calculations...
What I wouldn't give for a single system with all good data!

Converting 11 digit value into 18 digit value by filling from left to right
Hello Experts,
I'm a newbie in ABAP-coding. I didn't found anything in the forum, so I'm sure somebody could give a little help. I would like to concatenate value into field name "mat". The input length is 11 the output length should be 18. Could you please look at the code belove:
data: c1(7) value '10000002',
c2(3) value '001',
c3(1) value '0',
mat type /BI0/OIMATERIAL.
CONCATENATE c1 c2 c3 into mat.
write mat.
CALL FUNCTION 'CONVERSION_EXIT_ALPHA_INPUT'
EXPORTING
INPUT = mat
IMPORTING
OUTPUT = mat.
But is not giving me the correct result. I've defined a field "mat" which has the same proerty as 0MATERIAL and length = 18.
After concatenating values into mat, the result should be 10000002001 (length = 11).
But I would like the result to be showing from left to right in this way: 000000010000002001 (length = 18)
Could somebody tell where the problem could be?
Many Thanks
MamadouThe probelm appears to be with
mat type /BI0/OIMATERIAL.
I changed it to
MAT(18)
and got
000000010000000010

Pass javascript field value to ABAP field value
Hi all,
how can i Pass javascript field value to ABAP field value and utilise that value within layout.since you are new here, may i suggest you to search the forum, before posting a question. This has been discussed many times here.
to set a js variable value to a ABAP variable value, you cannot do it on the client side, your page has to go for a server rountrip so that the value can be set into a ABAP variable.
for this we generally follow the approach of setting the js variable value to a hidden html element (input type=hidden) and submit the form, and then in oninputprcessing retrieve the value from the form field and set it to a ABAP variable.

How to access a value from "List of Values" by giving a name?
I have a "List Of Values" defined in my BI Report. It comprises list of label-value pairs.
I have defined a parameter :p_Value for the above "List Of Values" defnition. this parameter is used in datasource sql defnition to filter the query results. I configured a template which has a table that shows all the parameters used for filtering query results. If I give <?$p_Value?> in the template then the parameter value is rendered on it. But I want the "name" of the parameter and not the value. Can anybody tell me how to access name of the parameter which refers to one of value in "List of Value" defnition?option 1:
Can you get the value from the DB in the report sql ?
You have the code, inside the report query, if you can get the decoded value form that
option2:
create another paramater, LOV and query, and make it as hidden, and use the first :param_1_value in the lov query in the second param and decode the value.
Now , you can refer the :PARAM_2_value in template which will have decoded value. -

How do I know if I can convert a String value to an int value or not?
Hi,
I want to know how to make the judgment that if I can convert a String value to an int value or not? Assume that I don't know the String is number or letters
Thank youEncephalopathic wrote
Again, why?One of the problems (have been dued) in my codelab asks us to write a class as follow
Write a class definition of a class named 'Value' with the following:
a constructor accepting a single integer paramter
a constructor with no parameters
a method 'setVal' that accepts a single parameter,
a boolean method, 'wasModified' that returns true if setVal was ever called for the object.
a method 'getVal' that returns an integer value as follows: if setVal has ever been called, it getVal returns the last value passed to setVal. Otherwise if the "single int parameter" constructor was used to create the object, getVal returns the value passed to that constructor. Otherwise getVal returns 0.
The setVal(int y) returns nothing, so how do I know whether it has been called or not?

Mapping multiple source value to one target value in value mapping
Hello experts,
In my scenario, i need to map more than one source value to one target value in value mapping. Like:
1 TenderPickup
2 TenderLoan
7 TenderPickup
101 TenderPickup
102 TenderLoan
107 TenderPickup
But when I enter the same target value for the second time and try to save it, it gives me an error saying value mapping already exists.
But this should logically be allowed. How can this be done. Please provide a solution.
Thanks,
YashHi Prabhu,
When i right click on the target field, it gives me only 3 options:
1) Insert Row
2) Delete Value Mapping
3) Value Mapping in all agencies
I dont see nay option for duplicating rows.
What I hae done is in ID i clicked on TOOLS and then VALUE MAPPING. I checked the option "Value Mapping Agencies" and gave my source and target agencies detials. Then i clicked on DISPLY and in the next page I have 3 columns - Value for <source agency>, Value for <target agency> and Group name.
When I give duplicate values in the column Vlaue for <target agency>, it doesnt allow me to and if i right click in this column, i get the above mentioend options.
Please point out where i m going wrong.
Thanks,
Yash
