Mapping artwork onto 3D shapes

How do you map artwork onto an extruded shape?

drag the artwork to the symbols palette first. then you can choose it and the surface you want to map it to in the Map art options for the 3D effect.

  • How do I update Album artwork onto my ipod.....

How do I update Album artwork onto my ipod after i have found the artwork and added it to my itunes?
i tried to just plug in my ipod and sync. it but that didnt work.

*Why is artwork not showing on my iPod when it's there in iTunes?*
iTunes will display a cover in many of it's views provided at least one track from the album has embedded artwork. The iPod appears to load only the artwork from track one to create the cover flow and album views which means that it can sometimes fail to display art for albums even when you can see the art in iTunes. Further, when tracks are played on the iPod, artwork is displayed if and only if it exists in the currently playing track, so track one may show art while track two does not.
*How to find tracks without artwork*
To find all the tracks without artwork so that you can update them you can try http://www.stum.de/itunes-find-tracks-without-artwork/ for Windows or http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=trackswithoutartwork for Macs. Use Google, Amazon, Discogs etc. to locate relevant images. Ideally these should be square, 320x320 pixels or above and borderless to give the best results in the various menus. If you have artwork for some tracks of an album, but not others, find the album in the main music folder, select a track with artwork, right-click (Option-Click for Macs) on the art & click copy, then select all the tracks of the album, use CTRL-I or Command-I to *Get Info* and then paste the image into the artwork box.
I say 320x320 because I believe (from using TouchCopy) that it's the size used in the iPod cache so if you're going to crop or resize you might as well work to that size. Otherwise 200x200 is probably good enough.
    *Rebuild artwork cache*
Sometimes the artwork cache becomes corrupt and fails to show correct artwork, even when this is properly set up in iTunes. To rebuild the artwork cache, connect your iPod to iTunes. Locate the iPod in the Sources pane on the left-hand side, then select the Music tab. Remove the tick from *Display album artwork on your iPod*, sync the iPod, reselect the option & sync again.

  • How can I paste album artwork onto iTunes album that is not available on iTunes. I have tried Command c the v and dragging but it doesn't work.

I have just purchase a new imac and want to insert album artwork onto itunes. This is not available on itunes store. I have tried the command button with c then v and this doesnt work. i have also tried dragging the picture but that doesnt work. Any advice please?

I have the same problem but your advice did not work for me. Pehaps I do not understand your directions. What do you mean by "go to where you saved the album artwork"? I never had any problem adding new artwork until I installed iTunes version 11.1.3 (8). Now I can't add new artwork anymore. Is there a special file in this version of iTunes where I should be saving the artwork I want to add to make it work? Before I could save it anywhere.
If you downloaded the artwork from the Internet. It'll be in your downloads folder. Open the folder, and "drag" the image from the folder to the Artwork box in the Info pane as shown:
When you see the "+" you know it's ready to drop, and it will add the artwork to ALL selected tracks as soon as you click "OK".

  • Mapping Graphics onto 3D objects

    Hi,
am trying to figure out if it is possible to map an image onto a fairly complex 3d shape then unfold this graphic, in the same way we unfold the material to fabricate the structure we are making. I work for a company that specialises in architectural structures made using fabric.
the simplest example of this would be a globe, which i know can be done using the 3D filters in illustrator. unfortunately the shape we are looking at is anything but a ball, cylinder, cube or simple revolved shape.
    anyone have any ideas?

No. Illustrator is not the correct program for that. It's 3D Effect is for doing simple extrusions and revolves to create things like extruded text and simple spot graphics. It is not capable of complex 3D modeling, surface joining, etc., and is not able to unfold and flatten its surfaces. Nor do you have much control over where individual surfaces break.

  • I have drawn some maps in pages using shapes and arrows. When I delete a shape a little grey dot appears that cannot be deleted. Any ideas?

I am using shapes and arrows to create concept maps in Pages. After saving the document I have opened it again and tried to make changes.
When I delete an arrow or shape a grey "Do not" sign pops up. It cannot be highlighted or deleted. My map now looks like it has grey measles.
    Any idea what is happening?

    Hi Kiku,
Select all the objects that you want in your map.

  • Map artwork to a 3D object

This question was posted in response to the following article: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/illustrator/cs/using/WS714a382cdf7d304e7e07d0100196cbc5f-642ca .html

Do it the other way. Make the corrugations by means of gradients at the back of the artwork you want to map to the object and set the overlying stuff to multiply in the Transparency panel to pick up the light and dark of the gradient. Something like this
It will take a little experimenting and you can make several symbols to map to the different sides.

  • ARTWORK ONTO IPOD

    Hi all
can you tell me how to put artwor onto my ipod 5 gen, have downloaded to itunes and harddrive artwork, have ticted boxees in catagory to allow artwork to go to ipod but is not happening
    many thanks
30gb video 5 gen   Windows XP

i have found that with itunes 7 and artwork added manually will import onto my ipod with no problems. the arwork itself it stored on each track as part of the i.d tag of something, however it you use the new fangled "get artwork" button on the advanced menu at the top of itunes then the artwork appears on all of the albums that you have that itunes has in it's library(nothing owned by sony for instance, they are soooo bitter) providing the album name field is correctly entered.this works fine up until this point.it even looks good in the new viewer.
However if you try to import any tunes with artwork found by itunes onto your ipod then the artwork disappears! very annoying. i spent and hour and a half on the phine with apple support who assure me that they are investigaing this. i await response... oh and the nice new artwork viewing type menus don't work when browsing ipod songs. i think that we may be seeing itunes 7.1 fairly soon(well alright, ihope)

  • Pasting a mask onto a shape

I am trying to copy a mask from one shape (creatied in Motion) to another shape(also created in motion). Shape 1 is in Group 1, Shape 2 is in Group 2. When I select Shape 2 and paste, it creates a new layer for the mask within Group 2, and doesn't paste the mask into Shape 2.
Am I missing something? Its been know to happen...

OK, did a little experimenting. I CAN paste the mask onto a video layer. just not a shape layer. Can't drag and drop, either.
I was able to go into my source mask, select all the points (what a hassle!), copy them, then go to the destination shape, create a temp mask with the mask tool, then select that mask and paste the points from my other mask. That worked, but not fun. Not sure if this is a bug or not, it didn't crash or anything, its just something that doesn't work. Well, doesn't work for me....
    Thanks!

  • -50 error when trying to get Album Artwork onto iPod

Has anyone had the issue of getting an "unknown error" -50 when trying to sync Album Artwork? I have searched for a similar problem and have found nothing. The art work used to work on my old machine. I have recent change computers, but I moved all my music over to the new machine without any issues. Any insight would be helpful. Thanks.

  • Pixelated gridlines when using mapped artwork.

I am trying to make a globe using a Equirectangular Vector Globe and a set of grid lines using the grid tool.
I set everything up and set it all as a symbol.
Do my half circle and revolve it, map the art work and size to fit.
However when I look at my grid lines at 100% they are pixelated. At 300% they are not.
ANy ideas what may be causing this?
I can get screen shots if needed to explain further.
    Thanks in advance.

Photohsop gives you the most accurate preview at 100% because you are displaying 1 pixel of data to 1 pixel on your monitor.
Illustrator translates the vector data to pixlels to display. In your case you have some curved lines, and illustrator has to figure how to dispaly this. Antialising helps alot to provide you with nice curved lines, but when the lines are at 100% the monitor only has a few pixles to display that line, at 300% view there are atelast 3x as many pixels to display the thickness of the line.
Imagine you had some graph paper, and could choose a color for each sqaure and had to draw a stroked circle. The more squares on your graph you have to dispaly taht stroke, the less staircased ti will look.
So no worries your lines are vector, and will print better than they look on your monitor, thanks to the higher resolution of your print device (espeically when you go to plate) in comparison to your monitor.

  • CS5 3D Questions - Twisted Figure 8 Immersion of a Klein Bottle

I need a 3d representation of a twisted figure 8 immersion of a Klein Bottle. That is a torus made from a figure 8 cross section rather than a circle cross section, with a 180 degree twist from start/finish to where the torus joins back on itself. The final image can be recognized as a mobius strip made from tori, or as an immersion (similar to projection) from 4d space it is a solid with only one surface (inside and outside surface continuous) and no edges - a special case of a Klein Bottle.
Don't worry about the math if that is not your thing. You can get an idea of what I am trying to achieve from the Illustrator and Photoshop files in the zip file found at:
    http://www.atwoodglass.com/temp/klein.zip
The final image needs to be an ellipse rather than a circle and needs to be stretched out so it has a lot of empty space in the middle. It also needs surface texture and certain surface features.
Originally I tried to do it in Illustrator using the 3d capabilities there. I did it using 3 tori with a clipping mask and layering to get the front torus to appear to join the middle torus then to join the back torus. I could get the proportions right, But as soon as I tried to map artwork onto the shapes I immediately ran into what seemed to be insurmountable stitching and shape problems. See the klein.ai Illustrator file from the zip file link above for the proportions I am trying for.
Next I tried Photoshop's 3d capabilities. It was surprisingly easy to get some form of twisted figure 8. The surface texture works perfect. I can do the surface distortions I need using the repoussé tool Internal Constraints. The problem is I can no longer get the overall proportions correct. See the klein.psd Photoshop file in the zip file link above for how a simplified version looks so far.
Is there any way to stretch the 3d mesh out like a rubber band such that the hole in the center is larger without the diameter of the figure 8 solid itself expanding?
The repoussé widget for choosing a point around which to bend the figure 8 360 degrees into a torus only allows points within the figure 8 itself. Essentially I need to bend around a point outside the figure 8.
Illustrator allowed this using the “Offset” option of 3d Revolve. But I can see no way in Photoshop.
Is there any way to distort the 3d image into an ellipse while maintaining the same cross section proportions of the figure 8 torus itself?
I can of course put the 3d mesh into a smart object and then scale just vertically. However, this of course also scales the cross section of the torus itself, not just the overall shape of the torus.
In Illustrator I achieved it by setting the 3d Revolve perspective to zero (no perspective) and then rotated the torus in the horizontal plane to appear as if it was an ellipse.
In Photoshop I can find no way to change or remove the perspective of a 3d object. When I rotate it in the horizontal plane the further portion becomes smaller and the closer portion becomes larger. Which of course is what perspective does in the real world. But not what I want here. If I use rotation in the horizontal plane I need either a zero perspective angle. Or the object as very far away and viewed through an extreme telephoto camera would also compress the perspective.
Or just being able to distort the mesh into an ellipse would work too. But I can not figure out how to do that. As far as I can figure, repoussé Constrains only allow me to work internal to the shape, not pull a section of the mesh as a whole.
I am sure I will get several answers along the lines of “I need to use a better 3d program”. If possible I need to use tools I already have. I do not have the money to buy an expensive 3d tool right now. I tried Blender but I think I need at least a week of going through tutorials just to get the hang of Blender's capabilities.
    Thank you,
    - Timothy Atwood

Essentially I need to bend around a point outside the figure 8. Illustrator allowed this using the “Offset” option of 3d Revolve. But I can see no way in Photoshop.
There is none. PS auto-calculates the center based on the bounding box. It doesn't even retain pivot points from imported meshes...
Is there any way to stretch the 3d mesh out like a rubber band such that the hole in the center is larger without the diameter of the figure 8 solid itself expanding?
No. You wouldn't stretch, you would have to use an alliptical sweep path and that's only something real 3D programs have...
I tried Blender but I think I need at least a week of going through tutorials just to get the hang of Blender's capabilities.
And you would have the same excperience with commercial programs as well. You're looking for an easy solution where none exists. 3D is complex on many levels and PS pretending for it to be easy by only providing a very, very limited set of tools doesn't change that. That being said, Blender is of course quirky in its own right, but feel free to download trials of otehr tools.... Some of them work for 30days as full versions just like Adobe tools.

  • Illustrator Freezing When Adding Second 3d Revolve

    Hi,
I've been using Illustrator for almost 48 hours now in an effort to make a 3d logo for my next website and everything has been going fine until I try to add a second 3d revolve effect to a globe containing letters. Whenever I do this Illustrator stops responding at multiple points during the process and freezes permenantly when I click ok and the loading bar for "rendering artwork" is halfway through.
I've tried making Illustrator a high priority process in Windows Task Manager, but that does not help. I don't have many other programs running and the ones that are (Firefox, FileZilla, Notepad) don't use up much system memory. When frozen Illustrator only takes up 50-60% of the CPU and about 600MB of memory.
I am running Illustrator CS5 on a Windows 7 PC:
    Processor: Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5700 3GHz
    RAM: 4 GB
The desired end result I am looking for is nearly identical to the following image, but with the name of my site instead of "breaking news":
    http://www.clipartof.com/portfolio/stockillustrations/illustration/3d-black-red-and-silver -breaking-news-globe-212078.html
Is Illustrator capable of making such an image?

...I try to add a second 3d revolve effect to a globe containing letters. Whenever I do this Illustrator stops responding...
It would not be at all surprising for a double-application of 3D Effect to cause it to perform at such a crawl as to make you think it crashed--or to actually make it crash. You're misunderstanding AI's 3D Effect.
Do not apply multiple applications of 3D Effect to the same object. Even if it didn't hang, the results would not be what you expect. For example: Forget about the orbiting text; I'll get to that in a minute. Suppose you just have a 3-character word, "Not", converted to paths. The paths are filled, and unstroked, as they should be. You apply 3D Extrude with no bevel. 3D Effect builds a 3D model of that, and then renders it as a group of flat, 2D paths. So far, so good.
But now you apply 3D Extrude again. By doing that, you've just told Illustrator to apply 3D Extrude to each of those flat 2D paths that make up the rendering of the first extrusion. You are not adding a combination of two 3D transformations, one being the extrusion and the other being a rotation. Even if it did finish rendering, the result would be a hideous mess, not at all what you are expecting it to be.
Your example looks simple, and it would be for any full-featured 3D modeler, and even for Adobe Dimensions, which is what AI's 3D Effect is based on. But AI's 3D Effect is a very dumbed-down subset of that functionality. It is merely AI's long belated answer to the cheezy simple headline extrusions that are common in every cheap drawing program, and even in Office applications. It's technically better than those in ways particular to vector drawing in a Bezier drawing environment, but it's still really just intended for the simplest 3D transformations: Simple extrusions, lathes, and planar rotations of a headline or image; and a limited ability to map artwork onto the resulting surfaces.
Your example requires each text character outline to be extruded (which 3D Effect can do), while also orienting each of those extrusions individually and differently within the same 3D coordinate system (which it can't).
You could very tedously fake the construct you are trying to build by actually extruding and rotating each and every character outline individually, then simply arranging and stacking them on the page so as to merely look like it is one model. But you simply cannot have multiple objects at different XYZ orientations in a slingle model in AI's 3D Effect. That's the debilitating limitation that anyone familiar with its predicessor, Adobe Dimensions, have been complaining about in this forum ever since 3D Effect appeared.
