Master Node on RAC

Hi,
Just would like to know, how to know which node is the master on RAC, is there any command for this?
cheers
fzheng

One way to find that information is to look at the log file $ORA_CRS_HOME/log/`hostname`/cssd/ocssd.* files, you would find something like this:
ocssd.l05:[    CSSD]CLSS-3001: local node number 1, master node number 1
ocssd.l05:[    CSSD]2007-02-08 13:58:44.508 [507920] >TRACE: clssgmEstablishMasterNode: MASTER for 21 is node(1) birth(6)
ocssd.l05:[    CSSD]2007-02-08 13:58:44.508 [507920] >TRACE: clssgmMasterCMSync: Synchronizing group/lock status
ocssd.l05:[    CSSD]2007-02-08 13:58:44.514 [507920] >TRACE: clssgmMasterSendDBDone: group/lock status synchronization complete
ocssd.l05:[    CSSD]CLSS-3001: local node number 1, master node number 1
ocssd.l05:[    CSSD]2007-02-08 14:01:46.236 [524304] >TRACE: clssgmEstablishMasterNode: MASTER for 22 is node(1) birth(6)
ocssd.l05:[    CSSD]2007-02-08 14:01:46.236 [524304] >TRACE: clssgmMasterCMSync: Synchronizing group/lock status
ocssd.l05:[    CSSD]2007-02-08 14:01:46.241 [524304] >TRACE: clssgmMasterSendDBDone: group/lock status synchronization complete
But, this information is not really not that critical for ongoing operations or regular maintenance.....and just informational for all practical purposes.

    Hi,
There is no such thing as "master node" in RAC configurations. All nodes are equal.

A network fluctuation shouldn't give reboot like this. Then why oracle design like this way? Is this a bug? My oracle version is: 10.2.0.5.0
Could you tell me the other possible situations when 1 RC instance reboots other RAC instacne.

What you are describing is the expected behaviour: if your interconnect fails, you will have a node eviction. Releases < 11.2.0.2 evict a node by reboot, which can fix the problem: the NIC may come up correctly when the machine re-starts. Releases >= 11.2.0.2 can often evict without a re-boot. But either way, if your interconnect goes down, a node must be evicted to prevent uncoordinated disc writes.
If you are interested, you can find some discussion and demos of this in a series of webcasts I've recorded,
Free Oracle Database Tutorials for Administration and Developers
If you really don't like this behaviour and the problems are transient, you can try 'raising the CSS MISSCOUNT parameter.

  • Master node

    Hi,
I am reading 'Advanced RAC troubleshooting' written by Riyaj Shamsudeen and have some questions about the wait event 'gc current/cr grant 2-way'.
    It says:
    CR – disk read*
    Select c1 from t1 where n1 =:b1;*
+1 User process in instance 1 requests master for a PR mode block.+
+2 Assuming no current owner, master node grants the lock to inst 1.+
+3 User process in instance 1 reads the block from the disk and holds PR.+
Why the master node is inst2? I think if no current owner, inst1 should read the block from the disk directly and it will be the master.
If only one block is read from the disk and the object which the block belongs to is never read, how to define the master node? Is it the requesting node?
    Please help me.
    Thanks.

    Hi
Master node is determined by no of time particular node accessed particular block.Which is accessed more will be master node for particular block. As I believe
Wait event gc current appears when request goest for current mode means for updation of blocks.
cr grant 2-way appears when same blocks is modified in two nodes.
    Correction is highly appreciate.

  • Identify the OCR master node for 11.2

My customer is on 11.1.0.6 RAC DB with 11.2 CRS+ASM and interested in finding  "OCR master node" at any point time.
I noticed that one way is to identify the OCR master node is to search
    $ORA_CRS_HOME/log/hostname/crsd/crsd.log
file for the line "I AM THE NEW OCR MASTER" or "MASTER" with the most recent timestamp. Does this applicable 11.2 Release ?
and what are the other alternate ways to identify master node.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
as it was mentioned before, you can use the RAC FAQ Oracle Support Note to determine the masters in a RAC system. Except that this note would not elaborate on the OCR Master that you are asking for (OCR Writer as it is called in the documentation these days) in this context.
However, your command to check $ORA_CRS_HOME/log/hostname/crsd/crsd.log works and the message is pretty much the same in 11.2 as it was pre-11.2. However, note that only checking the CRSD.log may not always tell you the OCR master all the time. Reason: The CRSD.log is used in a rolling fashion. Once the log entries have reached approx. 50MB, it is rolled over to crsd.l01 or something like that and a fresh crsd.log is used. 10 archived logs are maintained.
For an average cluster this will last for a while, but in general, there might be a time when all these logs have been used and the OCR master has never been changed. In this case, you cannot use the logs anymore. Luckily, you should not have to find the OCR Master all the time. Why are you interested in knowing which node the OCR Master resides on all the time?
At least, you should therefore cat all crsd.l* files under the respective directory on all nodes to determine this. But again, that should not be necessary.
    Hope that helps. Thanks,
    Markus

  • Changing Cluster Master node

       Hello,
I have two nodes rac setup. I just need to change the master node to different node in the cluster. How to change the master node?
      Please help me out.

    Hi,
Master Node not exist on RAC and I have pretty sure you are not talking about "OCR Master", you are talking about RESOURCE MASTER.
The only thing closest to something like a "Master" is that only one node has the role to update the Oracle Cluster Registry (OCR), all other nodes only read the OCR.
However this is just a role, which can easily switch between the nodes (but is normally fix as long as the responsible nodes lives).
This node hover is then called OCR master.
How do I change node which hold  "OCR Master"?
You can't decide that and you can't change that manually the Clusterware do it automatically without human intervention.
OCR Master is not a MASTER NODE it's only a role.
    Good answer here:
Re: Identify the OCR master node for 11.2
Re: which node will become master
Please don't confuse the concept of MASTER OCR with RESOURCE MASTER (e.g Data Block).
All nodes hold MASTER RESOURCE, because that I said : all nodes are equal.
With "billions" of data block spread out in memory of cluster (SGA Instances), one node maintains extensive information (i.e Lock, Version, etc) about a particular resource (i.e a data block).
So, one node has master resource of data block "data_01" the other node has a master resource of data block "data_02" and so on. If a node which hold master resource fails (shutdown) GCS choose other node in the cluster to be a MASTER Resource of that particular resource.

  • ASM instances on 2 node Oracle RAC 10g r2  on Red Hat 4 u1

    Hi all
I'm experiencing a problem in configuring diskgroups under +ASM instances on a two node Oracle RAC.
I followed the official guide and also official documents from metalink site, but i'm stuck with the visibility of asm disks.
I created fake disks on nfs with Netapp certified storage binding them to block device with the usual trick "losetup /dev/loopX /nfs/disk1 " ,
run "oracleasm createdisk DISKX /dev/loopX" on one node and
"oracleasm scandisks" on the other one.
With "oracleasm listdisks" i can see the disks at OS level in both nodes , but , when i try to create and mount diskgroup in the ASM instances , on the instance on which i create the diskgroup all is well, but the other one doesn't see the disks at all, and diskgroup mount fails with :
ERROR: no PST quorum in group 1: required 2, found 0

NOTE: cache dismounting group 1/0x6F88595E (DG1)

    any help would be appreciated
    thanks a lot.

  • Error when adding a new node to RAC 10g

    Hi all,
I have a RAC 10g environment test in Linux Red Hat Umbreakble 5 with two nodes. This RAC is fine on 2 nodes.
I want to add a new node (rac3) of the following way:
    - The node 1 (rac1) is started and the instance ORCL1 is online.
    - The node 2 (rac2) is offline. i.e the machine is off.
    - The node 3 (rac3). The machine is on and already configured
So that when I execute the CRS_home\oui\bin\addnode.bat on node 1 and put the information of node 3 (Public node name, Private node name, Virtual host name) and press next I get the following message:
    OUI-35000: Fatal cluster error encountered (PRKC-1071 Nodes rac2 did not respond to ping in 30 seconds) - Sure: The machine is off;
My question is: Can´t I add a new node on RAC if a node is off ?
    Anybody can help me.
    Thanks.
    (Wander Brazil)

    Interesting question.
You might have better luck getting an answer if you ask where people discuss RAC, instead of asking where people report documentation issues. (Go to http://forums.oracle.com and scroll down to 'Grid Computing' to see RAC forums.)

  • Help needed in deleting nodes from RAC database

Our DB is 10g RAC database and the servers are Window 2003 server. Initially the database was configured to have 4 nodes. For some reason we stopped the instances in the first two nodes and the current database is running on node3 and node4. I queried the v$thread view and it shows 3 records. Thread 2 is closed and disabled. Thread 3 is open and public and thread 4 is open and private. Now we need to disconnect nodes 1 and 2 from RAC db and cluster ware (We use Oracle cluster ware) and plan to use those two servers for other purposes. Although I read through the Oracle doc regarding deleting node from RAC “11 Adding and Deleting Nodes and Instances on Windows-Based Systems” and wrote down the steps we need to take but I am still not comfortable in doing it since it is production env and we don’t have any dev env to practice those steps. So I would like to borrow your experiences and your lessons learned while you were doing those. Please share your thoughts and insights with us.
Thank you so much for your help,
    Shirley

what's your full version? I can warn about specific issues in 10.1.0.3 and 10.2.0.1 - for example, in some cases (depending on how the listener was configured), it will be impossible to delete the listener for the deleted node. Known bug.
To avoid many many known bugs, you may want to upgrade to at least 10.2.0.2 before removing a node (from my experience, this is the first stable RAC version).
In any case, deleting a node is a rather delicate process. I really really recommend practicing. Take any pc/laptop, install VMWARE, define two virtual machines, install RAC and remove one node. It will take you an extra day or two, and could save your production.

    Hi All,
I get the following error eventhough I have followed the instruction for Solaris R2. The instruction is enclosed. Please Advise! Thanks.
    /app/cluvfy/runcluvfy.sh stage -post hwos -n nod1 -verbose
Result: User equivalence check failed for user "oracle".
    ERROR:
User equivalence unavailable on all the nodes.
    Verification cannot proceed.
Post-check for hardware and operating system setup was unsuccessful on all the nodes.
    =========================
    1. Log in as the oracle user.
    2. If necessary, create the .sshdirectory in the oracle user’s home directory and
set the correct permissions on it:
    $ mkdir ~/.ssh
    $ chmod 700 ~/.ssh
    3. Enter the following commands to generate an RSA key for version 2 of the SSH
    protocol:
    $ /usr/bin/ssh-keygen -t rsa
    At the prompts:
¦ Accept the default location for the key file.
¦ Enter and confirm a pass phrase that is different from the oracle user’s
    password.
This command writes the public key to the ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub file and the
private key to the ~/.ssh/id_rsafile. Never distribute the private key to anyone.
    4. Enter the following commands to generate a DSA key for version 2 of the SSH
    protocol:
    $ /usr/bin/ssh-keygen -t dsa
    At the prompts:
¦ Accept the default location for the key file
    Pre-Installation Tasks 2-11
Creating Required Operating System Groups and User
¦ Enter and confirm a pass phrase that is different from the oracle user’s
    password
This command writes the public key to the ~/.ssh/id_dsa.pub file and the
private key to the ~/.ssh/id_dsa file. Never distribute the private key to
    anyone.
Add keys to an authorized key file: Complete the following steps:
    1. On the local node, determine if you have an authorized key file
(~/.ssh/authorized_keys). If the authorized key file already exists, then
proceed to step 2. Otherwise, enter the following commands:
    $ touch ~/.ssh/authorized_keys
    $ cd ~/.ssh
    $ ls
You should see the id_dsa.pub and id_rsa.pubkeys that you have created.
    2. Using SSH, copy the contents of the ~/.ssh/id_rsa.puband
~/.ssh/id_dsa.pubfiles to the file ~/.ssh/authorized_keys, and provide
the Oracle user password as prompted. This process is illustrated in the following
syntax example with a two-node cluster, with nodes node1 and node2, where the
    Oracle user path is /home/oracle:
    [oracle@node1 .ssh]$ ssh node1 cat /home/oracle/.ssh/id_rsa.pub >>
    authorized_keys
    oracle@node1’s password:
    [oracle@node1 .ssh]$ ssh node1 cat /home/oracle/.ssh/id_dsa.pub >>
    authorized_keys
    oracle@node1 .ssh$ ssh node2 cat /home/oracle/.ssh/id_rsa.pub >>
    authorized_keys
    oracle@node2’s password:
    [oracle@node1 .ssh$ ssh node2 cat /home/oracle/.ssh/id_dsa.pub
    authorized_keysoracle@node2’s password:
Note: Repeat this process for each node in the cluster • How to clone a 2-node ASM RAC db to a 3-node ASM RAC db by RMAN?

We need to clone a 2-node ASM RAC db to a 3-node ASM RAC db by RMAN. I would think this will be about the same as a regular single db procedure by RMAN mostly. However, in 3 node RAC, there will be additional instance thread in redo (thread 1,2, and 3). Questions will be
    1. Should I use CRSCTL to add new instance (3rd)? -- I guess yes
    2. Should I create additional online redo group for thread 3? -- I guess yes
    3. Should I create addition undo tablespace? -- I guess yes
Can any body provide a procedure of cloning the DB?
    Thanks!

Not just easy as next, next, next
    version depenedencies and etc.

  • Migration from Single Node to RAC Node

    Hi,
We are planning to migrate the Database from Single-Node to RAC Node. Are there any checklist list to be considered regarding Performance, System and Database ( or any other topic), before migrating to RAC.
    Thanks

If it is already the same version, you will need to focus any "single-threadedness" of the application like sequences that are mandatory sequential, "semaphore-style" locking etc...
My experience is that going RAC and in particular to ASM can give a performance boost. If it is the same version (11gR2 for example) then any statistics-related performance issues will still be there.

  • Domain Name change on 1 node of RAC

Is there oracle note for changing domain name on RAC?

If your RAC registered hostname + domain, this case like you change hostname
    Check:
    $ olsnodes
    Changing Hostnames in Oracle RAC
    http://www.pythian.com/news/482/changing-hostnames-in-oracle-rac/
1 node of RAC -> you may delete node/change hostname/add node
If domain, not registered in RAC... you may change it ... (no remove node or reinstall RAC)

  • How to sort master-node in master-detail scenario without losing subnodes?

    Hi,
I've a master-detail scenario and want to sort my master node.
How can I sort the master node without losing the detail-subnodes?
If I take a look in class CL_WDR_TABLE_METHOD_HNDL and method  IF_WD_TABLE_METHOD_HNDL~APPLY_SORTING
    Sorting is done by
    - unload node with context_node->get_static_attributes_table into an internal table
    - keeping node state like lead_selection(s) and attribute_properties
    - sort internal table
    - bind internal table to node
    - set lead_selection and properties
    But all subnodes are gone.
How do you sort a master node?
    Thanks and Regards
    Carsten

I think you have to write your own logic for that . May be you can implement IF_WD_TABLE_METHOD_HNDL in your class and extend the current logic to support subnodes.
