Mavericks network shares disapear

We are having major issues with out Network shares. They are not only slow enough to cause productivity issues with in our entire Mac users running Mavericks, Drives and folders are disappearing from within the mounted drives. Have tried various work arounds to no avail...Please need help with this. I have been all over the internet and it seems that this is an issue for a lot of people, and no one really has any answers.

It seems that I found a workaround for the problem (it is still a bug in my opinion):
here is my mounting-script that works well:
delay 2
tell application "Finder" to open home
tell application "Finder"
          try
                    mount volume "afp://username:password@mynas/share1"
  delay 1
                    mount volume "afp://username:password@mynas/share2"
          end try
end tell
tell application "Finder" to close home
I have it in the login-items.
It basicly does the following: Open the finder with the home-view. Then mount the two shares. After that closes the finder window.
(Replace username:password with the credentials needed to mount the share, "mynas" with the name or adress of the server and "share1", "share2" with the acutal name of the share.)
The 2 seconds delay at the beginning is not really needed I suppose but since the script works I'll leave it there.
In order to see the shares in the favorites section of the finders sidebar you have to drag them there once by hand. Afterwards they will show up there everytime the particular share is mounted.
The trick is to open the finder window before the shares are mounted. When the script does this they will appear in the sidebar. I think there is the problem. When the script mounts the share without displaying the finder window, they will not show up in the sidebar. It is a bug introduced with ML.

How can I make OSX index a network share for spotlight?
I am using a QNAP NAS with SMB network shares, which I mount with OS X Mavericks. They are not searchable, as far as I know because of the indexing of network share is by default not activated.
To force the OS to index them I activated this via mdutils. But this is no solutions. This makes spotlight to index the share once. But I want spotlight to index it always and keep it up to date. I have a huge amount of documents & fotographs, which is very difficult to manage without being searchable.
Unfortunately the only solution I found in the www was the mdutils-way, which seems not to work, maybe only works not for me.
    I would appreciate any assistance,
    Thank you,
    Stefan

My thanks to everyone who has contributed to solving this problem here.
It appears that there still is NOT a good, reliable solution.  Please correct me if I'm wrong.
I did find this on http://jonathansblog.co.uk/how-to-enable-spotlight-indexing-on-a-network-drive:
    ===================================
To enable spotlight indexing on a network drive:
    # mdutil /Volumes/name -i on
To disable the indexing of a connected network drive:
    # mdutil /Volumes/name -i off
To check the status of indexing on a connected network drive:
    # mdutil /Volumes/name -s
    ===================================
And, I found this on the Synology NAS forums:
    cd /Volumes
    mdutil shareName -i on
    mdimport -Vp ./shareName
where shareName = name of your share
I have used the mdutil /Volumes/name -i on, and it seems to work.
But, if I understand it correctly, it is a one-time indexing -- the index is NOT keep up-to-date with changes.
So, how can we keep the index up-to-date?
My thought was to schedule a Terminal file to execute each night with the mdutil code.
Would this work?  If so, how would you setup a scheduled run?
Would it have to be done on each Mac that accesses the Share?

  • Finder crashes when trying to connect to network share

    Hi!
I've just upgraded my Mid 2012 MacBook Pro to Mavericks, and found that Finder always crashes when trying to connect to my office network share via an IPSec VPN connection. It's a Synology DiskStation NAS, so i have the options to connect via AFP or SMB, however both result in the same, the crashing of finder. Even after i relaunch it, i can't open finder, and can't even shut down or restart my system (only by holding the power button for 5 secs...)
At first i thought it's the result of the latest Little Snitch version, but the problem remained after completely removing Little Snitch.
Unfortunalely i won't be able to try connecting to the NAS on the local network until monday, but i'd really appreciate if someone could point me to the direction of some solution as this way i can't do any of my work.

Just a quick heads up. I finally managed to resolve the issue. It seems that mavericks doesn't handle the MTU of the vpn connection correctly, so i ended up modifying the MTU on the VPN gateway.

  • Network shares disappear from desktop

    Hi,
I have searched but cannot find a thread which outlines the problem I am having.
I have a 40 strong iMac network with 2 Mac Mini servers.  All iMacs are running Mountain Lion (10.8.2) with the Mac Mini's running Mountain Lion (10.8.2) and Server (2.1.1).  I have a number of network shares defined which are hosted on a Pegasus array connected via a thunderbolt cable to one of the Mac Mini's.  The shares mount as part of the login profile for each user.
The problem I am having is that the desktop icons for the shares randomly disapear from the desktop.  This typically happens to 2, 3, or 4 of the shares but never all of them at once.  When I go into the Connect to Server option in Finder and connect to the server hosting the shares they appear as available for connection (i.e. they are not greyed out as if an existing connection exists with the share).
As a general rule, the end users leave their machines on overnight and don't usually shut them down.
Can anyone shed any light as to why these shares seem to be randomly disconnecting / ejecting?
    Cheers,
    Tzukius.

    Kevin,
All shares are done via AFP.  When I look at the stats on the CPU on the server app it is hovering around 3-5% for a 4hr average.
One thing I have noticed is that on my machine I never lose the connections, co-incedentaly, my machine never enters sleep mode whereas the other machines are set to sleep after 30mins.  I'm starting to think that this may be the cause of my problem, even though the ethernet interface is used for connecting the machines to the network and not the wireless connection (I had read on a couple of other threads that this can cause the disconnection of network shares).

  • Backing up network shares

The school I work for uses a large number of Network Home Directories for Students. Our 350 students share approximately 150 MacBook Airs and iMacs, with each student using a network account to log in.  I've load-balanced the student accounts across 4 Mac Mini servers acting as file shares (with twin 256gb SSD) and 1 aging 2009 Xserve.  In years past, the student home directories were hosted on RAID volumes, providing data redundancy in case of a drive failure. With the Minis, however, this is not the case. Each mini has 2x256gb SSD drives: one drive is reserved for OS/Apps/Server Data and the second drive will be used exclusively to handle student home directories.
I have a fifth mac mini with a 4TB Pegasus Thunderbolt RAID 5 that I would like to use as a backup server for these Home Directories. I'd like to use some combination of rsync/automator/ical to schedule these backups to happen nightly (like, between 10:00pm and 5:00am).
    I was thinking that:
BackUpMini would need to mount the network shares of each of the 5 file servers:
         /XServe5/Home Directories/students a-g
         /Mini1/Home Directories/students h-l
         /Mini2/Home Directories/students m-o
         /Mini3/Home Directories/students p-s
         /Mini4/Home Directories/students t-z
BackUpMini would have the RAID mounted with a volume called "Home Directories Backup" with unique directories
         students a-g
         students h-l
         students m-o
         students p-s
         students t-z
An rsync script would copy each source folder to its corresponding target volume on the RAID.
    Does the logic seem sound?
If so, does anyone have any advice on what a script should look like to handle this all in one shot?
    Thanks for any feedback,
    Christopher

So a few thoughts that may help you down the right path.
First, if you are equally distributing your 350 students across the 5 servers as seen here:
         /XServe5/Home Directories/students a-g
         /Mini1/Home Directories/students h-l
         /Mini2/Home Directories/students m-o
         /Mini3/Home Directories/students p-s
         /Mini4/Home Directories/students t-z
We can assume a normalization of there being 70 home folders per server.  (Obviously, the number of students in the T-Z is likely less, but we will stick with the averages).  If this is the case, you might be running a real tight ship when considering that a 256 GB disk will provide an average of only 3.65 GB per student home folder.  Not knowing the age or the work content, this could be very tight and may result in some issues, especially if you are not redirecting cache and temp files.  Consider that each home folder, without user template modification is 8.3 MB before logging in.  Once logged in, the home folder can triple without launching a single app.
Again, you have the experience so I trust you ran the numbers.  I know however that I would be very concerned about a volume so small.
So now to your question.  Yes, rsync can do this very effectively.  The 3.1.1 release has been very good.  Add the creation times and extended attribute patches when you compile.
And, assuming that you are looking to do a nightly sync, then your strategy makes sense.  Plus, you should not be concerned about bandwidth.  After all, the rsync will occur in the evening when no one is using the network.  The rsync should also push the data over ssh, not by mounting AFP/SMB shares.  Tunneled over ssh is faster, does not require the Finder to be active, and can easily be automated via cron or launchd.  Simply exchange your ssh key and your backup system will function fully automated.
Also, if all of the machines are integrated into the same domain, you can even push all permissions.  If you opt to do this, rsync should connect as the root user (must edit sshd.conf) so that you can traverse all the folders, avoiding permissions lockout.  In theory, if you do this right, you will be able to move the backup volume to the failed mini, remap the net home mount, and pick up right where you left off.
And remember, the minis can be link aggregated to support more network bandwidth.  I remain a fan of the USB to 1000Base adaptors since it leaved the TB port open.  But Thunderbolt to 1000Base will work just as well.  Talk to your switch team to enable 802.3ad link aggregation on the switch and you can run the minis at 2000Base.  For the $40 cost of an adaptor, this extra speed is really a bonus.
Oh, one other tip about rsync.  I've gotten into the habit of wrapping my rsync script into a conditional.  What I learned (the hard way) is that rsync does what you tell it and does not question.  This can be devastating...  So I've been doing my rsyncs like this and I sleep better at night:
    #!/bin/bash
    ## Base Variables
    # I define a date stamp with something like:  theDate=`date +%m_%d_%y_processName`
    # I will define a log path so I can change it easy:  baseLogPath=/Volumes/Backup/Library/Logs/
    ## Confirm that Source is Present
    ## Assuming I am triggering this from the backup server, I will first confirm that the source is visible.  If it is not, I run the risk of deleting all my content
    volumeSane=`ssh [email protected] "test -e /Volumes/Data/.rsyncTrigger && echo 1 || echo 0"`
    if [ $volumeSane = 1 ]; then
    # run the rsync only if the source volume is present
      (rsync -avX -e ssh "[email protected]:/Volumes/Data/SharedFolders/" "/Volumes/Backup/SharedFolders" --delete --stats >> ${baseLogPath}${theDate}.log) >& ${baseLogPath}${theDate}.error
    elif [ $volumeSane = 0 ]; then
    # don't run if the source is missing
    # I also like to do a osascript -e "display notification \"hey it failed\""
echo "source volume not present -- exiting" >> ${baseLogPath}${theDate}.error

    Hi,
    >>If this happens a user had to Close his Citrix session and start a new one, until the drives disapear netx time.
When the drives disappear, are we able to access the network shares via UNC path? Besides, check event logs to see if some related events were logged. Moreover, if we use anti-virus software, we can try to disable it to have
a check.  In addition, for this involves third party product, it's also recommended that we contact vendor support to see if they can provide some suggestions.

  • Multiple Users Mounting the Same Network Share?

    Hello, first time posting...
I'll cut right to my main question: Is it possible, on OS X v10.3.9, for multiple users to simultaneously connect to the same network share?
Here in my office, we have a single Mac that is used by multiple people throughout the day. It has two accounts on it, 'Communications' and 'Studio'. 'Communications' is an Admin account that is used by a co-worker who spends the most time on the Mac. He created the no-limitation 'Studio' account for the rest of us to use.
There is a certain Windows network share that we both frequently use. We've found that if one user connects to the share first, the other user will not have access to it; using 'Go -> Connect to Server' will result in the share being greyed out in the list, and the share will not show up in the Finder.
However, there is one way around it. If Studio connects to the share first and then Communications (the admin account) attempts to make a connection of it's own *through a shortcut on the dock*, then a 'clone' of the share will be created on Comm's desktop, with a "-1" after the name (though it might be some other number).
This may sound like I've answered my own question, but what I'm looking for is a way for the non-Admin account to access the share after the Admin account already has (so that we don't have to log-in and disconnect Communications everytime Studio needs to manage files on the share).
We have Thursby Software's DAVE installed on the Mac, but I'm not sure how it fits into all this.
    Any thoughts, suggestions or advice?
    Thanks.

Bizarre. It turned out I could merge them, but only in to the mapped drive - L: - and only by explicitly clicking on the drive icon - if I typed L:\series in to dialog box it converted it back to \\nas\share\series... Not helpful.

  • Error Message When Importing Bookmarks From A Network Share

An error message is generated whenever I try to import bookmarks.html from a network share on kubuntu. This same operation is sucessful on the windows version of firefox.
    To replicate:
The bookmarks.html is created by Firefox 3.68 on windows 7. And is saved to a network share location. When trying to import this file into firefox 3.6.8 on my kubuntu 10.04 machine, I get the error message/window titled: remote files not accepted. The message states: You can only select local files.
If I copy bookmarks.html local to the kubuntu machine, it imports without error.
On windows, I can import bookmarks.html from the network share without error.
Does anyone know why I can't import across the network on the kubuntu version?
browser being run on windows 7:
    Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2.8) Gecko/20100722 Firefox/3.6.8
browser being run on kubuntu 10.04:
Firefox 3.6.8 Mozilla Firefox for Ubuntu canonical - 1.0.

It appears to be any remote file, not just the bookmarks file. When trying to upload a file to a website, firefox threw up the same error:
error message/window titled: remote files not accepted. The message states: You can only select local files.
So what is it about files that are sitting on a server, firefox and kubuntu that causes this? I don't get the error message when using win7 on the same files.

  • Window 8.1 system unable to access network shares via VPN connection

Is there something inherent to Windows 8.1 that prevents it from accessing shares on a domain?
I know that it cannot join a domain, but does that also mean that it cannot access shares which are on a domain?
My problem is that I have several user that are running windows 8.1 that are connecting to our network via a VPN.
The users have domain accounts but their computers as windows 8.1 cannot joined to the domain.
So to access network shares they have to use their domain credentials to create a VPN connection.
Once connected the user can RDP to systems on the domain using their domain accounts, so I know that their user names/passwords and permissions are correct. They can access these systems using the computer name, so I don't feel that I have a DNS issue.
They can see the shares on our file server, but when they try to access their departments shared file, they receive an access denied message. There are a few shares that are completely wide open, shared to all users and all departments but they cannot access
    those shares either.
You can ping the file server, from the the client when they are connected to the VPN but you just cannot access any of the shares.
    So...
I am thinking that it has something to do with windows 8.1 and not being able to join a domain, but I cannot find anything to explicitly support this thought.
Other users running a variety different OS (windows 7, OSX, Linux) can all access the shares without any problems via the VPN, so I am a little stumped.

I have done some more testing and oddly enough I can map a drive if I use the IPaddress, but not the computer name, when checking the check box "connect using different credentials"and providing they users domain credentials.
This seems to point to a DNS issue, one would think, but I can hit the file share server by name \\fileserver.dev.lan
I can see all the shares, so dns seems to be fine right?
So I don't understand why I can map a drive using do the IPaddress and not the machine name, but yet I can see and ping the server by name?
When I try to create a mapped drive by machine name I receive the following message:
    Windows cannot access \\fileserver.dev.lan\all
You do not have permissions to access \\fileserver.dev.lan. contact your network administrator  to request access.
But if I use the \\x.x.x.x\all using the very same user and password I get connected with no problem.
This only seems to happen on windows 8.1, which leads me to think that has something to do with OS.
I am thinking about upgrading to windows 8.1 pro, but I don't want to go though the hassle and expanse is the OS is not the problem.

  • Can not print from network share.

When a PDF document is printed from a network share whe're getting this error:
Windows cannot find 'T:\temp\test.pdf'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.
This happens when a user click on the document with a right mouse click and select "print".
But when the users copies it to his desktop and then select print with the right mouse click. The document print as normally. What could be the problem?
we are using adobe reader 7.0.0

Suggest that you check to make sure that you installed Bonjour Print Services for Windows v2.0.2 on the PC.
Run the program and hopefully it will find your printer so you can select it and click to get things going.

  • Data Federator: Access Text file from secured Network Share or Sharepoint?

    Hi,
I am using BusinessObjects Data Federator Designer XI 3.0 Service Pack 2 - 12.2.2.0 (Build 1002172322) and I'm new to DF.
I am trying to use the Text File Datasource type to connect to a file on a secured Network Share and from a Sharepoint 2010 document repository. Is this possible?
I am currently able to use the Text File datasource to read a file from a public network share (
share\public\folderpath\file) or on the local federator machine using the "Local File" connection but cannot put in a username/password for accessing a secure network share. Is there a built in DF username/password that should be granted access to the share?
Neiher the FTP File System or SMB Share seemed like it would work here either.
For the Sharepoint connection, I know that I can make a webservice on a list and connect DF to the webservice, but I want to just connect to the document repository. I was unable to get this to work even with Sharepoint repositories using WebDav since the Local File method did not accept the url string (http://mysite.<org>.com/personal/<user>/Shared Documents). Is there any way to do this without having to change the way the file is exposed on the Sharepoint side?
How is this normally handled? Put the files on a unsecured network share or on the DF server? Import the files into a DB and just use DB connections?
Finally, is there a way to import XLS/XLSX files in DF or only CSV files?  I saw DI has an Excel Adaptor but didn't see anything for DF and when I tried it either could not retrieve the XML schema or reading the file's data failed.
    Thanks alot for the help.
    Kerby

Bump, any help here with Data Federator usage?  Sharepoint, XLS files, or using secured network share?

  • AppV 5: Sequence shortcut to application located on network share

    Hello,
We have an application which is programmed to run directly from a network share.
However, it needs some parts installed locally on the client too, to make it work.
During sequencing using App-V 5.0, I installed the parts necessary on the client, and I created a shortcut to the network path e.g.: \\server\share\application.exe
The sequencing process works fine, and the application gets published correctly to an App-V client.
However, when launching the application we receive an error "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000142). Click OK to close the application."
In Event Viewer we notice following error in Applications and Services > Microsoft > AppV > Client > Virtual Applications: "The virtual applicatoin '\\server\share\application.exe' could not be started because the App-V Subsystem 'Virtual Shell'
    could not be initialized. {error:0x8DC02325-0x52E}"
We notice that the sequenced application shortcut references: "\\server\share\application.exe  /appvve:557B23AE-4942-4E3E-BE5F-1DA010EA7DAE_C7B3C423-6E9A-4CE9-AC18-59C7F18F3FA1"
When launching the application directly (\\server\share\application.exe - without appvve parameter) it works fine (but at that moment it's missing the locally installed client components).
When running the same application with parameter 'appvve', it fails (error message above).
When copying the application to a local drive, it does run succesfully when using the 'appvve' parameter, but unfortunately this is not a supported scenario for the application we're talking about. It has to be run from the network share.
So am I correct to say that App-V does not support running an executable located on a network share in the virtual bubble? Are there any solutions/workarounds to make this work anyway?
I tried mapping the network share to a drive letter, but that didn't help either.

I have used a vbscript to start the exe from within the package, install whatever you need, then make the vbs in the installdir locally (c:)
    Dim objShell
    Set objShell = WScript.CreateObject( "WScript.Shell" )
    objShell.Run("K:\Whatever")
    Set objShell = Nothing
Make a shortcut to the VBS and change the icon and stop the capture

  • Crashes when running applications from network share - "Windows cannot access the file for one of the following reasons"

    Hi,
starting a couple of weeks ago, we get the following error(s) when running applications from a network share. We don't know what causes this, we are not aware of any major changes in our network infrastructure or client/Server configuration. We did upgrade
a lot of machines to Windows 8, but the issue also occurs on older Win7 computers.
We figured out a workaround though: The applications run fine when launching from a FQDN share (like
\\share.domain.Company.com) and only cause problems when running from
\\share directly. They have worked fine for years without FQDN though.
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
    >>The applications run fine when launching from a FQDN share
It sounds like a DNS suffix issue. When this issue occurs, please try to ping share on the client, then check if the corresponding IP address is correct. If the IP address is wrong, please adjust your settings of DNS to make sure that the client can resolve
    the share correctly.
If it's very hard to change the settings of the DNS for some reason, as a work around, we can add the entry into the clients' hosts file.
    Best Regards.

  • Creating a symlink directory on a network share to a path below a mapped drive letter, local path, or UNC path does not work

Am I correct in assuming I can not create a `symlinkd` to a network share, local path, or a UNC path on a network share that will be accessible by clients?
    ###Mapped drive letters don't work:
    1) navigate to a network share:
    pushd \\windows2008server\share\
    2) make a hardlink:
    mklink /d test_sharedir t:\directory\
    dir .\test_sharedir
    #Directory of Z:\test_sharedir
    #File Not Found
    UNC paths don't work:
    1) navigate to a network share:
    pushd \\windows2008server\share\
    2) make a symlink:
    mklink /d test_dirunc \\windows2008server\share
    dir .\test_dirunc
    #Directory of Z:\test_dirunc
    #File Not Found
I can create a functional `symlinkd` on a local drive to a mapped drive letter or a UNC path.
    Are my assumptions above correct?
We are in the middle of a migration and have created two symlinkd to UNC paths for shared DLLs, one below c:\windows\system32\ (directing to a share containing 64-bit DLLs) and one below c:\windows\syswow64 (directing to a share containing 32-bit DLLs).
On the file server, we have had a path to 32-bit DLLs (from Windows 7 clients: s:\dll\).  I am attempting to rename this directory so that it is accessible via "s:\dll32\" and would like to create a symlinkd that links "s:\dll" to
"s:\dll32" [again where S: is a mapped drive on a Windows 2008 server].  How do I do this?
    Thanks,
    Matt

    Hello Mandy,
The link you sent me is for Netapp CIFS server daemon contained within DataOnTap (the Netapp OS) to follow symlinks.  I am inquiring about the Microsoft products Windows Server and Windows 7.
To gain a better understanding of the Microsoft Windows Server and client (Windows) CIFS stacks and interaction of the stacks, I have referred to Figure 6 "Server Message Block Server Model" within the following (albeit older) document: http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/8/0/2800a518-7ac6-4aac-bd85-74d2c52e1ec6/tuning.doc
    You will see the following:
I assume that the Windows Server CIFS server service must be "smart enough" to determine that a CIFS client is attempting access to a SYMLINKD and actually fill the request by following the SYMLINKD.  The CIFS server service does not appear
    to operate like this.
    1) Am I correct in my assumption that the CIFS client (redirector) and the CIFS server (server) do not following symbolic links (whether they be file or directory)?
    2) If not, how do I submit a feature request for this so that it can be reviewed and approved or not approved for inclusion/hotfix release?
    Thanks for your time,
    Matt Brown
    [UPDATE]
Note that you can use a `directory junction` instead of using a SYMLINKD, to link to LOCAL resources (source). However, `directory junctions` do not allow access to resources over UNC.

    It should work using Windows impersonation, the "Ego" approach I describe here;
