MB5,1 MiniDP to VGA max res 640x480

Hi
I am using a MiniDP->DVI to drive my 24" monitor, no problems running 1920x1080, however, when i need to run presentations on a projector, i have bought a mini-dp->vga, using the latest BC drivers, i cannot get it to run any higher resolution than 640x480. I have tried the nvidia beta drivers for the 9400M gpu, it would be nice to get some apple feedback on this issue, since it seems as if i'm not the only one having this issue.
I am using Windows Server 2008 as OS.
MB5,1 Unibody

hey,
there is no solution yet. but another thread with people having similar problems.

  • MiniDP to VGA Adapter - screen flickering, even after Firmware Update

    Hello,
concerning the MiniDP to VGA Adapter, I'm experiencing the same issue many other users are complaining about: When hooked up to my 22" external LCD, the screen goes black from time to time. After 1-2 seconds it's back to normal; still enervating though.
    Model:
LG L227 WTP-PF (@1680x1050 + max. colors; only available refresh rate: 59,9 Hz)
    MiniDP-VGA Adapter Firmware: 1.03 (current)
    Mac OSX 10.5.6
MacBook Pro 15" Unibody (Late '08)
Apple Software Update says I'm up-to-date on the software side. I've read that the low refresh rate could be responsible for this. Only problem: I can't change it in System Preferences/Monitor settings. Other options than 59,9Hz are greyed out.
    Any solution to this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Tobi

I've got almost exactly the same set up, only with a Samsung display, and I too have found that the recent adapter firmware update has not done the trick.
However, since you have a PRO, you are (maybe) in luck. The PRO has two graphics options, the 9400M (which is the same as in the MB) and the 9600M GT. You switch between these by selecting "Higher Performance" or "Better Battery Life" in the Energy Saver System Preferences.
I have found that by selecting "Higher Performance" I do not get the screen blanking at all. It is slightly annoying that when taking my Mac on the move, I have to switch back to "Better Battery Life" (and hence log out) if I want to get the most out of my battery, but it is the only way I have found of ensuring a screen-blanking free experience when sat at my desk using the external display.
    Hope this helps.
    Ade
P.S. I have a LG LCD HD TV too, and don't find I have the problem with either graphics card when using this. I only connect at "something x 768" to the TV, whereas the 22" monitor is "something x 1050", so maybe there is a problem with the 9400M driving higher resolution displays? I presume it can drive Apple's own HD displays ok though....?

  • No HDMI or MiniDP-to-VGA output, but HDMI-to-DVI is okay

I purchased my Mac Mini almost a week ago and I've been having strange issues with getting my various monitors to work with it.
I don't own any Thunderbolt or native MiniDisplayPort monitors, however I do have a number of VGA monitors, as well as some HP LP2475w monitors which have VGA, DVI (DVI-D and DVI-A), HDMI, and DisplayPort inputs.
When I have OS X installed on my Mac Mini, the Apple MiniDP-to-VGA adapter works with my VGA monitors, but only when OS X has loaded. My monitors all say "no signal" during the boot-up phase. However I had no problems when I connect my LP2475w monitors to the Mac Mini via the HDMI-to-DVI adapter: I see the grey screen during bootup, can see/access the boot menu, and everything works fine.
Today I purchased a HDMI cable to connect the Mac Mini to my LP2475w monitors to see if that would work. Well, it does work... almost, sometimes, but not most of the time.
When I use a direct HDMI connection my LP2475w says there's no signal, unless I plug the cable in during the text-mode portion of Windows' bootloader (under Boot Camp). As soon as Windows loads, or during the grey-screen bootup section my monitors all say there's no signal. There is nothing wrong with the cable or my monitors.
    Here's a table:
    Connection
    Can see boot screen/boot menu
Can see OS X (when loaded)
    Can see Windows (when loaded)
HDMI from Mac Mini to LP2475w
    No
    Not tested
    No
HDMI-to-DVI from Mac Mini to LP2475w
    Yes
    Yes
    Yes
MiniDP-to-VGA from Mac Mini to VGA monitor
    No
    Yes
    No
So what's going on here then?
Has anyone else had the same problems as me?

SOLVED - I purchased a third-party MiniDP to DVI adapter instead and it works a treat.
Quite what the difference can be to a supposedly passive adapter I'm unsure - but glad it's fixed anyhow.

  • My Macbook Pro (Mid-2012) won't connect to an external display using my MiniDP to VGA Cable.

I'm on a Macbook Pro (Mid-2012) on Mac OS X 10.8.3 (currently downloading the update to 8.4). When I plug in my Mini Displayport to VGA adapter to my Mac, the screen flickers blue for a second and the Display Settings window detects the other monitor and allows me to rearrange the screen, but it does not project anything onto the other monitor. However, I tried connecting an Apple Thunderbolt Monitor to this computer today, and it worked. This wasn't a problem before, as I was able to connect this Mac to other LCD projects before. Furthermore, I don't think it's an issue with the adapter either because it's relatively new. I also tried plugging in the adapter of another Mac (which was working fine) into my Mac, but it didn't work either.
    Here's what I've tried:
    1. Restarting the computer with everything plugged in
    2. Pressing Command + F1 when it's plugged
    Any advice would be helpful!

    Hi lancekatigbak,
If you're having issues with the display out on your MacBook Pro, you may want to take a look at the troubleshooting steps in the following article:

  • Dual 30" at max res

I have a MacPro (Mid 2010) with the graphics running on ATI HD 5770. I have 2 30" cinema displays which I want to run in dual monitor mode @ 2560x1600. But when I try to, the one connected to the mini display port (5770 has 1 DVI and 2 MDPs), runs at a lower resolution. What should I do to run both at 2560x1600 together?
    I found this: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB571Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=MTA4MzU1ODY
    Will this solve the problem?
Or if I buy another 5770, can I connect the 2 Displays to the 1 DVI port on each and still run in Dual-monitor mode?

DisplayPort and its Mini variant use a different native protocol from DVI. A simple adapter can force the DisplayPort into "Dual-Mode", which produces a good approximation of Single Link DVI/HDMI.
Single Link DVI/HDMI is generally only good for up to 1920 wide. For wider, you need Dual Link, and a simple adapter will not suffice. You need an "active" "powered" converter, such as the US$100 Apple one referenced. There are also some third-party ones available for less, but be sure they specify "active" or "powered", and state that they support Dual Link and/or greater than 1920 width resolutions. If there is a USB on the computer end, it MUST be plugged in to provide additional power.

  • MacMini to VGA monitor via MiniDP- VGA converter.

    Hi everyone,
I want to connect Mac Mini to the old VGA monitor. I'm using converter from MiniDP to VGA. When computer starts i see the startup screen on the monitor but then it disappears and no signal message comes. After that when i connect a HDMI TV to mac mini it shows. So i guess that the mac mini switches video output from MDP to HDMI soon after startup. How could i solve the problem?

SOLVED - I purchased a third-party MiniDP to DVI adapter instead and it works a treat.

  • External MiniDP/TB to VGA Adapter Issue

    Hi,
I work for a university in the classroom technology department. We have over 220+ classrooms on our campus utilizing technology. We utiltize a handful of models of projectors as well as VGA switchers/control systems.
It seems recently, in (so far) 5 of our classrooms, Mac laptops (faculty personal laptops) and a desktop (permantly installed in one of the rooms) are no longer connecting to our external displays. All Macs involved either have 10.8.5 or 10.9+.
Thankfully, in all situations so far, an "active" miniDP to VGA adapter fixes the issue. Most faculty own the Apple branded one, which unfortunately is not "active".
And the strangest part, some of these same laptops work in some of our classrooms. So I know it could be some component of our systems and something with how the latest OS versions handle the "handshake" between computer and display...
Here's how all of our systems hook up:
3 Devices (usually PC, Laptop, Doc Cam) ---> 3x1:2 VGA switch/splitter ---> 1 output to monitor, 1 output to projector
The VGA cables are normally from Monoprice.com which have served us amazingly well for years.
Any input would be helpful and appreciated. We'll continue testing for other similarities between rooms.
    Oh the world of technology
    -Tony

    Hi Greg,
Typically when colors are off or alignment is off centered there's usually a bent or missing pin somewhere. Each pin carries a specific color and signal between the machine and the monitor. I'd inspect each pin on the cable from the monitor and make sure that everything looks aligned and normal.

  • IMac 21,5 2010 3,06GHz Second screen no max resolution

    Hi there,
I have an iMac 21,5 3,06Ghz 2010-model. And an LG Flatron w2261VP. I want to connect this LG to my iMac, but when i do it gives a max res. of 1600x1200. This is not the native res. for this screen, the native one is 1920x1080. But when i select the 1600x1200 the screen goes black and says "out of range". However, when i connect the LG screen to my MacBook Pro 13" 2010 the screen automatically uses the 1920x1080 resolution and works flawlessly.. The resolutions i can select on my imac for my LG are: 640x480, 800x600, 1012x768, 1152x870, 1280x768, 1280x960, 1280x1024, 1344x1008, 1400x1050 and 1600x1200
I'm currently using the 1400x1050, can't select the higher one; screen goes "out of range"
    I use a mini-displayport to VGA adapter.
My question is: Is it even possible to use a second screen with my iMac? Why does it work with my MacBook Pro and not with my iMac? Is it a bug? Do i need a DVI of HDMI? Anyone else suffering this problem?
Your help is very much appreciated!

Are both in Extended Desktop Mode?

  • Mac Mini refusing to support res greater than 1280x1024

    Hi,
I'm trying to set up a Mac Mini for my family, and have been having trouble getting both XP (via bootcamp) and Leopard to support my 24" monitor's native widescreen resolution of 1920x1200. When I go to the Display setup menu the max res it lets me select is 1280x1024. I've searched google for a solution but can't seem to find any... I've connected the monitor using a DVI cable, but using a VGA/D-SUB doesn't seem to make any difference.
In XP I've upgraded the graphics display drivers to no avail.
    Can anyone please help?
    TIA.

    Thanks for the reply.
It is indeed a brand new Mac Mini with Leopard running on it. The monitor's an old, discontinued LG L2320T. I can't really tell whether it's being detected properly or not (can't find a mention of the name/model anywhere except the profile name seems to have been set up correctly). I'm pretty sure the TFT's max/native refresh rate is 60Hz, and I've left it as such (had some issues when it was accidentally set to 75Hz). The monitor definitely does 1920x1200 in XP (we had it hooked up to a windows box before).
Sorry I don't really know much about Macs at all... Hopefully this'll shed some light?
    TIA

  • Thoroughly confused about supported resolutions using MDP to VGA adapter

I've read many posts on the topic and I still have no idea what is correct. Some people claim the max res for this adapter is 1600x1200 while others claim they are getting 1920x1200 with it. I have a 24" HP LCD that has VGA and HDMI as the input choices. HDMI limits the res to 1920x1080. Will this adapter run the HP @ 1920x1200 (native resolution) or will it limit it to 1600x1200 ? BTW this is being used on a late 2008 unibody MacBook. Thanks

Problem solved. I picked up the MDP to VGA adapter and was able to use the monitors native res of 1920x1200 but the flicker and wavyness made it impossible to use. And yes the adapter had the current firmware. But what I discovered in the process was that in mirror mode I am unable to drive the monitor at optimum resolution. With that in mind I tried the MDP to HDMI adapter again, unchecking mirror mode, moving the Finder bar to the external display and SHAZAM. I have a rock solid display external display now running at 1920x1200 : )

  • VGA-cable to connect iPad2 and beamer

iPad2 with Keynote is a wonderful tool for presentations using a beamer.
Who can give advise which 15-pin VGA-VGA cable best to use to connect iPad2 and beamer over 10 to 20 meters?
Does the high performance cable SVGA-SVGA work:
    - Max. res.: 1920 x 1080p
    - SVGA 15-pin Male to Male
    - 2x ferrietkern
    - AWG 28
    Thanks for your help.
    Eric Sessink

As of now apple has stopped this. We can all give a feedback for this to apple so that after getting a huge amount of feedback about this they may rethink once to implement it back.

  • 640x480 Desktop Issue

My Mac Mini is plugged into an LCD TV monitor, the max res. it will display is 640x480
My problem is that when I run software update the "I agree" button on the license terms is OFF SCREEN so I cannot click it and proceed.
I get this with many other menus and options.
Is there a way I can scroll the desktop or some software that will allow me to do this.
    Thanks
    Dave

Open the Universal Access pane of System Preferences and turn on the Zoom option under the Seeing pane. Options include automatically displaying the highlighted control and scrolling whenever the cursor is at the edge of the screen.

  • Any hope for my low-res photos?

My husband was a very bad boy. All of our honeymoon photos, and all of our new baby photos were taken at low res (640x480) and I can't get decent quality 4x6 prints. Are there any programs or easy ways to fix the resolution?

Sounds like your hubby was a "very good" boy. Gave you a honeymoon and then a child. This is our only job!
But he didn't read the manual (we don't ask for directions when we're lost, too) and recorded "digital" images that are too small to print.
The "software" to fix them costs more money than your new babies wardrobe and they take a level of skill to use. But it can be done. Ask NASA and the first Hubble images.
Copy and burn your low resolution images to CD. Call around (or online) to find a service that can help.
Obviously any "new" data added to the images will just be "guesses" by the software but many tools do exist to help improve them.

  • Max resolution for QT movies??

I have watched a few TV shows I have downloaded from itues via QT on both my windows machine and my ibook.
My Windows machine I use a 20" Apple Cinema Display and is powered by an ATI850XT vid card.
Since it is a 20" ACD the resolution is 1680x1050.
When I watch a QT show and try to go full screen, the video play back is very pixelated. It still looks a little pixelated when played back at small settings (double size).
However, when I play the same show back on my 12" ibook, at full screen it looks just fine.
Now my 12 ibook of course only has a max res of 1024x768 I believe.
So basically I want to know if QT can not play back at higer resolutions or is this purely a windows and QT issue?

I learned a little hidden secret.
I was watching my itunes tv shows on my ibook and it has an optino for "fit screen" which makes the QT player as large as possible while retaining the aspect ratio of the show.
On Apple OS, it is CTRL 3 to do this. Under Windows QT there is no CRTL 3 option listed.
However, if you do a CTRL3 the screen enlarges to the max size of you monitor while keeping the aspect ratio of the show (4:3 or 16:9) and looks great.

  • [SOLVED] Trying to make Syslinux visually pleasing...

So I setup a dualboot with Arch & Windows 8.1 using Syslinux for management. I read all through the Wiki page, set it up accordingly, and it works nicely.
There's only one thing that really bothers me, and it's the screen resolution whilst in the boot menu. It's not like I'll quit life if I don't work this out, but It'd
be nice to make it look nice. I used to have a UEFI-GPT scheme on my desktop and back then I used gummiboot, and, even though It lacked advanced
configuration and personalization, it was very simple and displayed resolution correctly. It was super bare and super perfect.
On my laptop I'm running a BIOS Legacy-MBR scheme because it came like this, I didn't change it then and it's too late to Zero it all out again.
I'm using Syslinux now; It's just as simple and easy to use, works just as well and even supports a custom background. The only thing that annoys me
is the 640x480 max res. It even has a hardware detection tool, I don't see how it wouldn't automatically set resolution to native screen size.
Is there anyway to set this, or will I have to content myself with the crappy resolution? Here's my Syslinux config file...

Read the wiki. You can set the resolution. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sy … _boot_menu
