MBP 17 screen freezes in middle and many languages says restart!!!

I have a Macbook Pro 17inch- bought 3 months ago. This problem just came up recently when I was watching youtube videos and browsing web. My computer just froze and a black translucent curtain comes over it and in many languages says that you need to power off your computer, and then turn it on again.
I'm not sure but this is probably happening after the last software update i did.(updated: 1 week ago, this problem occurred for about 3-4 times in this past week)
I'm glad it didn't happen when I was working on my research paper.
Any ideas mates?

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It sounds like a kernel panic:

Here is another link that might help with troubleshooting:

It's always prudent to boot from your install disc and repair your boot disk after forcing a shut down with the power button. Also good practice to repair permissions after downloading software, although there will be many permissions that do not get repaired.
Good luck!

I wanted to restore my ipod touch 4G, but everytime it is restoring with the apple logo, the screen goes partially white and my itunes says "error 9"... what should i do?
    plz answer me~

    Error 9
This error occurs when the device unexpectedly loses its USB connection with iTunes. This can occur if the device is manually disconnected during the restore process. This issue can be resolved by performing USB troubleshooting, using a different USB dock-connector cable, trying another USB port, restoring on another computer, or by eliminating conflicts from third-party security software.

My iMessage freezes mid-typing, and I have to restart my iPhone 4s to get it working again. What is happening and what do I do?

    Hello cconklinhmb,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like one app is freezing. It looks like you have already done some troubleshooting. Since this is a pre installed app and you have already restarted the iPhone. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.

  • Screen freeze, wifi disconnect, and the only way is to reboot

Each time I use safari, my iPad 2, iOS 5.1 freeze.
Wifi disconnect, and I have to reboot the device.
    Any tips?

Try resetting Safari - though I'm not sure that it will help. I just can't think of what would cause WiFi to disconnect - the screen freeze occuring I can see happening - but the WiFi????
Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Data. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

  • MBP Stutter, Screen Freeze, Won't Boot Now

Today when using my MBP, the screen stuttered and then froze.  I rebooted and it worked fine for the next 4 hours. I got to my hotel, it booted fine and did the stutter again. Now when I reboot it has a hundred really thin horizontal lines on the logo screen and when it tried to load past that, it just stays a white screen. Currently out traveling for work so can't take it into a store. Does anyone have any tips or advice to fix this or know what's going bad?

Horizontal lines then white screen? Logic board, monitor cable.
Have you done a SMC reset yet? however does it default to white screen now permanently?
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
That is likely either the monitor cable, or logic board, possible GPU fault, or the monitor itself.
Yes, you will need an appt. with Apple store for diagnosis specifics as to actual fault.
You have a 1 year warr. on your Air for factory faults / defects due to normal use, ..is it a recent purchase?
Nobody here can give you a cost...if out of warranty, if merely the monitor cable, then it is rather a cheap fix,..... if logic board or monitor, rather costly indeed.

  • Mbp 2011 screen freezes and beeps

My 2011 MBP 13.3 will freeze, displaying short bars across the screen in columns, audio beeps three times in intervals.  I must hold the power button down to reboot.

    Some things you can try:
    1. Try a new user account, create one in System Preferences -> Users and Groups, test to see if the issue still persists in this new user account, this will give us a lot of information. (if the problem is the same or it vanishes, let us know)
    2. Make sure all your software is up-to-date, Apple Logo -> Software update.
    3. Unplug all 3rd party devices, just keep in the necessary, Power, Keyboard + Mouse, no ethernet or external hard drives etc.
    4. Reset the PRAM http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
    5. Reset the SMC http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    6. Boot to the recovery partition (CMD + R on startup until you see a spinning cog with an apple logo, then let go) -> Choose english as the main language -> Choose Disk Utility -> Select your hard drive from the left pane of Disk Utility (NOT Macintosh HD, the one that will look similar to: 1TB ST3200WAJS) -> Select the 'First Aid' tab -> Bottom right of the window it will say 'S.M.A.R.T Status: ________' ... What does it say after smart status?
    7. While still inside the Recovery Partition, select Macintosh HD -> First Aid (tab) -> Verify Disk -> Repair Disk (unless it says the volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK) -> Verify Disk Permissions -> Repair Disk Permissions (if there are differing permissions on the disk)
Let us know if the issue still persists, but make sure you do all of those steps correctly and post back as much information as possible (PRAM takes two chimes at startup, unplug the power cable for 15 seconds, plug it back in, wait 5 seconds, turn on... make sure you follow all articles)
    Good Luck!

  • Mbp's screen freezes either goes white or bleeds

so i've seen many posts about this problem but i haven't seen any answers yet. my mbp while either gaming or watching videos from time to time the screen will freeze and start to show white patchs on the screen until the whole screen is white or some times it will bleed the picture over the screen. this happens really randomly sometimes it will go for hours without any problems other times even after a hard restart it will happen while booting. is there something i can do to correct this issue or must i take my mbp in and have it looked at. for the cost of this mbp there shouldnt be any hardware issues this soon (purchased august 2010) please help.
**besides these errors i have only good things to say about my mbp

This is a graphics chip issue, typically covered under your one year warranty.  Be sure to buy AppleCare on the machine and register for it, before this July is out.

  • MBP (mid-2009) freezing, slow installations and file transfer

I bought the latest MacBook Pro model and installed Snow Leopard on a cleanly formatted hard drive. I have tried migrating via ethernet and FireWire from my iMac, but the migrations failed either due to freezing (via FireWire after roughly 24 hours of file transfer) or by an error message (ethernet with Migration Assistant).
Only through a Time Machine backup was I able to transfer my account files to the MBP, which again totaled at over 20 hours of transferring. The system was a mess, clogged constantly by freezing and spinning beach balls of death for durations lasting around 10-20 seconds during which music would clip after 5-10 seconds of everything not responding, this being accentuated especially during installations. I decided to format and try anew.
Now I've formatted the hard drive, installed Snow Leopard and will transfer my files manually onto a clean account. Installations take a long time although SL installation is within 30 minutes, iLife took 1.5 hours to install 5 GB. During the installation Safari stopped responding, as did the entire system, and the spinning beach ball would keep spinning. Watching a 480p trailer in Quicktime made the entire computer freeze up (no video/audio) for 10 seconds halfway. Transferring 136 GB (my Music folder) will take around 15 hours according to the estimate after 10 minutes of transferring.
I've sold my iMac now and all I have are the files on my external hard drive. I want to get them onto my MBP ASAP but the slowness is preventing me from doing what needs to be done and it's very frustrating. When I try to boot into Hardware Testing by holding D down the computer doesn't do it no matter what (Application DVD in or not, plugged into power or not). I've tried resetting PRAM but I get the same inaction.
    Any ideas?
Edit: I've done Disk Utility to no avail, it finds nothing wrong.

Installed, still getting freezes with spinning beach balls. Transfer says it would take 1 hour opposed to that 15 hours, but it stops transferring after X amount of gigabytes (from 0.5 to 5), not do anything for a while and then continue, stretching the estimate to over 2 hours after some time. I don't know if this is just with the hard drive.
The freeze-ups are frustrating as **** and make for a very poor experience. Any ideas to get to the bottom of this? I still haven't been able to boot into the Hardware Test no matter how much I try.

  • Downloaded iLife and installed it to get iDVD. iMovie working, Garage Band not installed and my working iPhoto stopped working. Icon where iPhoto used to be now has a white circle with a line in the middle and error message saying  that it is damaged.

    OS X 10.8.4 (12E55)

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Your MacBook Pro came with iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand, and what you did is to install iLife from a DVD having these applications from the Mac App Store.
What I recommend you is to delete the iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand copy you have. To do it, open Finder, select Applications in the sidebar and delete them. Then, open the App Store, go to Purchases and download iMovie, iPhoto and GarageBand. iDVD will be working after doing this
