Mbp random shutdowns. out of ideas. didnt pay $4000 over for this garbage.
So i had my 1st gen cd mbp for over a year now. almost a year and a 1/2 in fact. I forgot to buy app. Bad mistake, because its super unreliable now. 3 months into ownership, fans stopped working, magnetic catches fail to work so i cant shut my mbp. So i brought it to the service centre. they said there was a screw stuck in the fan which resulted in it not turning. *** did that screw come off? He said he had no idea. Fantastic.
My problem was fixed, but wif it came another problem. my top case was severely misaligned. alot of gaps all over. I brought it to another service centre who claimed they ordered a top case for me, and they would replace it free of charge. And they did, but it didnt resolve any issues. Still alot of gaps. I was told "its like that". I had enough of waiting so i just forced myself to live with it. Get this; i had to live with imperfections on an high end premium mobile computer which cost me over $4000 bucks. Garbage.
Fast forward to abt 2 months ago, my warranty had ended, but the gaps were getting worse. As it was a problem that had existed in the days since my laptop was covered, i called Apple and asked nicely if there was something they could do about it, since it was an issue that was left unresolved from many months back when my warranty was still valid. No problem they said. I was a happy man, for awhile, as you will soon find out why this happiness was shortlived.
I should add at this point, that my mbp has been on the receiving end of a stick of kingston 1gb ram(bumping up my system ram to 2gb) and a replaced battery, and that its working PROPERLY
So i brought it in to 1 of the service centers, and i was quite suprised to discover they actually replaced my top and bottom case. There were still gaps.. but minimal. The CSO told me the same thing; there are bound to have gaps once an mbp has bene taken apart and put together again. Garbage isnt it? I didnt fork out big money for imperfection. But then again, as i said, the gaps were quite minimal and it was on a level i could accept. So i signed for it and i was on my way home.
Since then, i have been on the receiving end of many many many random shutdowns. iStats showed a very high 128deg. c @ heatsink B while the rest of the readings were pretty normal. and then the whole thing would shut down. @ times heatsink B readings were not available on iStat. Sometimes heatsink B disappears altogether.
So i took it back, where after subsequent diagnoses by the techies, said that it was the result of a faulty battery. I told them i had no problems whatsoever before i brought my mbp in.. but they said they were very sure it was a faulty battery. What timing right? Well they gave me a new one free of charge, because i was under the battery exchange program. So, i am into my 2nd battery of my 1 and 1/2 years of mbp ownership.
So it looked ok the 2nd time i brought it back home.. but now its still developing sudden shutdowns. I really dont know what to do now. its not OS based as it happens both in Xp & OSX. It happens whether the power is plugged in or not.
Can it be the ram? But i swear it has not been giving me any problems before.
Seriously can anyhelp? Any suggestions? I cant be going back to the service centre everytime it happens. I need my mac everyday for sch work and etc etc. i am really not compelled to yell @ Apple over the phone. Nobody deserves to be yelled @ for something they didnt do....
Thats what i am doing now. I took out both rams and reinserted. And you know what... it seems fine now. Its like a very irritating bee-otch of a girl friend. 1 moment all nice and sweet. The next shut on you like never before

It also happens when I'm charging my phone, and also the battery percentage doesn't show that correct battery level not unless I turn off and on.. I tried rebooting the phone but it doesn't seem to work for me, random shutdown still happens..
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off

After upgrade to Mavericks I have to shutdown using the power button. Any fix for this?
I have a mid 2011 iMac, just upgraded to OSX Mavericks. It will no longer shut down using the menu. I have to push and hold the power button. This sometimes results in a very loud "snap" from my machine. Tried reinstalling but still does the same. Any fix for this? If not, how do I redownload Mountain Lion?
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful. -
MBP random shutdown even with power cord plugged in
My MacBook Pro (original) has now randomly shut down 5 times since I installed 10.5.6 the week before Christmas. 4 of those 5 times happened with the power cord plugged in, the green indicator light on and the installed battery fully charged. I have two batteries and it has happened with each of them at least twice. Yesterday I got my first shutdown while on battery only. After each shutdown I was able to restart the computer and it operated normally, even the one on battery only.
These shutdowns are fast and complete. There is no warning of any kind. The screen just goes blank. It is not sleeping, there is no pulsing light on the front. Using the start key begins the process from scratch with the Apple "startup chime."
The occurrences have gotten more frequent. The first two were within 24 hours of when I installed 10.5.6 and they happened within several hours of each other. Both of these were with the power cord attached and fully charged batteries. I swapped the battery after the first one. When it happened again, I swapped them again.
The next time I had the problem was 1/30 (last Friday). The only significant software installation I had done between installing 10.5.6 and then was to install iLife '09 on 1/28. All software updates had been installed in a timely manner. Friday the laptop was plugged into external power and the battery was fully charged, but I don't know which battery was installed.
2/1 I had an issue where my computer couldn't locate the OS file on startup so I did a archive and install. It operated normally since then until yesterday, 2/4 when I had two shutdowns. The first I had the computer on external power and a fully charged battery. The second was the ONLY time I have had the shutdown occur while on battery power only. I was on a flight when the second shutdown occurred. I had used all the power in the battery that was installed when the first shutdown happened (down to about 11 minutes remaining). I then swapped batteries without shutting the computer down. The system rebuilt itself normally and I began working on iPhoto. About an hour later it just shutdown. I was able to restart the computer normally and used it for another 45 minutes or so before I shut it down for landing.
I called Apple Care this morning and they advised me to get an appointment with a Genius. I resist being without my laptop but will try this and let them look over the console log to see if they can find anything.
I have done all the basics, reset the PMU, zapped the PRAM and repaired disk permissions. The next thing I am going to do is to calibrate both batteries. I doubt this will have any impact on the issue because most of the shutdowns have occurred with external power connected. I just haven't done this in a while.
Any ideas out there? Anyone have a similar problem?
I have another issue on my Mac Pro since installing 10.5.6 and my wife's iMac G5 has a completely different issue since installing 10.5 (I didn't install this OS until last week so I could get the new iLife on it). Seems like this latest OS version is a bit buggy or at least incompatible with a lot of Apple's products in different ways.
Fight On!UPDATE:
Service was due and now that I saw the machine fail 4 times in a day doing the same process I knew I could duplicate the issue on demand. That's a big bonus.
Called Apple Care yesterday morning and the guy I spoke with read over the notes on my case after I told him what happened the day before (black friday, 4 shutdowns). While he didn't transfer me to a Product Specialist, he did talk to one for quite a while (I was on hold for about 20 minutes while he did this). He said I could ship it to Apple and they would look at it or I could take it to an Apple Store or Authorized Service Center. Thinking this was the next step I had secured a time at the Carlsbad Apple Store for late that afternoon (my usual & closest store, Escondido, was booked all weekend). They told me to take it in and reference the case number. The Product Specialist thought it sounded like a logic board and would duly note that diagnosis in the case history.
After the conversation ended I decided to make sure I could cause the failure. So I started the process (threw out the face.db from the iPhoto Library package and opened iPhoto whereupon iPhoto begins a scan of the images for faces. Having over 12,000 images gives it a lot of work). This time I decided to monitor the workings of the laptop using iStat Pro (freeware widget download & I recommend making a small donation it's so good). I kept track of the processes at 5 minute intervals, the CPU usage, numerous temps AND the fan speed. The latter seemed to be the critical. Shortly after the fan speed got to 4700 the shutdown occurred. It took 36 minutes from the time I started. The fans kind of confirm to me that it could be the logic board.
I took the laptop to the Apple Store and started the process in front of the "Genius." He read through the case as well as the printed copy of this thread and other notes I brought from previous shutdowns including the data I mined from iStat Pro. He was unimpressed and thought it was a non-issue. I guess that's only fair because I was unimpressed with him. He figures it's my system because of a software conflict somewhere. His answer was to do a clean install and reinstall all the software from the original disks. I told him I have spent over 50 hours on this issue to date and that what he was suggesting would take at least that much and guarantee nothing if it's a database issue...duh! Disagreement. Oh, and he also doubted it would fail just from making it work.
43 minutes after starting the process, well after my "Genius" went home for the day (I was his last appointment), the failure occurred. The "Genius" he handed me off to was working with someone else next to where I was sitting. When the fans hit 4700 rpm I told her it was going to happen soon and as I finished my sentence the failure occurred! Cool.
They have the machine and I'll let you know what they do.

MBP Random Black out Screen [ONLY ONLINE]
Hello everyone,
My Macbook Pro Early 2011 15 inch i7 with 8GB RAM at the moment is experiencing some trouble. When I'm watching videos online, the screen goes black after a few minutes. I know that the Early 2011 are famous because of faulty Logic Boards, but I don't know how to make the Hardware test without the disk.
And also, this problem started when I updated from Mountain Lion to Mavericks. When the blackscreen started, I rebooted the PRAM and SMC, but sometimes it didn't do the trick, and It stayed for hours to the system booted. After I Downgraded from Mavericks to Mountain Lion, this issue didn't happen for 3 or 4 complete days, and it happened again now in Mountain Lion. So, Hardware or Software issue?
Well to summarize:
PROBLEM: Blackscreen only when watching videos or anything flash format on the internet.
SYMPTOMS:
Blackscreen Only Online When Watching videos that are in flash format, or any page that has something inside of it that has flash format (Example: Simulators Online).
Not rebooting: Persistent Blue Screen or No Safe Mode booting or After PRAM or SMC Rebooting no booting.
QUESTION: Hardware (Logic Board) or Software Issue? You have the problem as found in this -> https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4766577?tstart=0 - thread. Give it a glance and you'll see that many others are having the same problem with 2011 15" and 17" MacBook Pros. Basically, the solder on your GPU to logic board has cracked. In the end, you won't be able to boot at all (if you've not already reached that point).
Some people have been lucky enough to get a free logic board replacement. Unfortunately, many people have also gone through 3-4 logic boards and the problem is never solved. A replacement logic board is not a 'fix.' The only fix that seems to last any time is a BGA reball of your GPU. Lot of those repair shops around the world - make sure that you choose one who has at least a one year warranty. There is a list on Facebook of reballers across the globe -> http://on.fb.me/WaxddM.
Good luck,
Clinton

Opportunity save times out ...Large entries in PPFTTRIGG for this opportuni
Hello,
We are working on CRM Opportunities..
Editing the opportunity is possible, but when this opportunity is saved, it times out..
There are a set of these opportunities for whom it is timing out...
For these opportunities, there are a lot of entries in the table 'PPFTTRIGG' - actions table..
Trying to process the messages using the report 'RSPPFPROCESS' is timing out again for these opportunities
We have action definitions for opportunities (if opportunity has not been updated , opportunity expired etc ) to trigger email alerts ...which are sitting in the PPFTTRIGG table.
Do you know a workaround or a solution for enabling the saving of the above opportunities..
Any advise is greatly appreciated..
Thanks.
Regards,
Monica

You may skip determine of Actions for certain opportunities in the badi's like
CONTAINER_PPF
EVAL_SCHEDCOND_PPF
EVAL_STARTCOND_PPF
This is just an idea, i never tried this, May be you can explore in this angle.

My daughter's ipod. I know little about them.
She will select a song to play and then it randomly plays a different song. Often with the picture for the original song displayed. We've tried resetting and no better.
Is there anything else we can try?
Thanks.Try:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Unsync all music and resync
- Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
- Restore from backup. See:
iOS: How to back up
- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device. -
When I play on some sites I like them to be zoomed out so I can see more at once. But every time I change the screen I'm using it zooms back to the original. Is there a way to save the setting so I don't have to scroll so much?
You can use one of these extensions to set a default font size and page zoom on web pages:
* Default FullZoom Level: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/default-fullzoom-level/
* NoSquint: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/nosquint/
Check that you aren't running Firefox in permanent [[Private Browsing]] mode -
basically the question is the same as the title of the discussion. double sided printing option is grey and unselectable. i can't figure out if it can be changed to on in the presets etc. would appreciate any help. i am using maverick and the brother hl 1110 laser printer.
Hello! I have the same exact problem and tried your suggestion. I can't find a duplex setting

Random Shutdown/Thermal Runaway
Unfortunately, the AppleCare Plan on my iMac G5 (iSight) expired a month ago. Or, to be a little more clear on the irony, a month before I started getting a repeat of a random shutdown issue that I had the machine in for about a year ago. These typically happen when my son is playing WoW or we are watching YouTube vids, movie previews, etc. or just plain using a lot of processing power.

Have tried the standard resets of PRAM and SMU, permission repair, etc. which, though fun, have not done anything to solve the problem.
Any thoughts, suggestions as to what I can do or what can be done now that I am outside the AppleCare Plan would be very appreciated. Other than spend lots of money on a repair of course!

Message was edited by: James SeinesYour power supply is failing, take it in and have it replaced, your symptoms are classic and point to thermal overload caused by the power supply failing.
You might try calling Apple Customer Relations at 800-767-2775 and see if you can talk them into paying for the repair. Be polite but firm and ask to be escalated to the next level. -
Printing is randomly cutting out for some users last few days with no known cause
1. Printers deployed from Server 2008 print server with group policy
2. Seemingly at random, a person will lose the ability to print to the HP printers (all running Universal driver 5.70)
3. Print jobs will enter the print queue, and be immediately deleted. (no errors or recorded events observable)
4. A different user logged into same machine will be able to print.
5. After some (?) time, printing will return to normal.
Been happening for several days now to various people. No obvious system changes or common threads in affected people or systems. I've upgraded to v5.90 of the Uni driver and restarted the server. No additional reports today, but it's randomly occurring.
Any ideas on what could be causing this would be appreciated. Given all the other goofy problems I've had with this print server over it's life, I am tempted to just flatten it and rebuild from scratch. Or Exorcism.
James A. Helfer | COMPUTER SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATOR WTW ARCHITECTS | PITTSBURGH PAHi Jim,
Have we tried to enable the Operational Log in printing?
To enable the Operational Log, do the following:
1. Open
Event Viewer
2. Expand
Application and Services Logs\Microsoft\Windows\PrintService.
3. Right-click
Operational and choose Enable Log.
Besides, Have you checked this printing troubleshooting article? For the other related logs and debugging tools, please see:
Troubleshooting Windows Server 2012 Printing(Same as in Windows server 2008 R2 environment)
Before we start to rebuild the printer, please take a try with the steps mentioned in the above article.
Best regards
Michael Shao
