MBpro to Older TV

I have a macbook pro, with the DVI output on the side.
I was wondering:
1) is there any kind of cord that would go to RCA video (JUST yellow, I don't have composite inputs)
2) is there a cord that'll work for the MBP like there is for ipod's that will connect out of my "audio" output to my tv's input?
Thanks in advance.

What is the difference between analouge and optical audio?
Hmm, entire books have been written on that question.
In a simplistic explanation, the MBP headphone jack combines 2 functions. Analog audio, where the electrical signal is the same shape as the sound waves it reproduces on something like your earphones; and right down the center of the jack is a red light emitting diode that can blink rapidly to transmit a computer data (digital) version of the sound wave. Instead of earphones, you need a corresponding optical digital INput that can translate the light pulses back into continuous electrical versions of the sound wave for analog listening on earphones or speakers.

  • Yet AGAIN! "You can't open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto"

I have read every thread on this topic I could find in these forums, and tried most solutions, and I still can't get iPhoto to work.
Equipment:  MacBook Pro June 2010, OS 10.6.8.  Bought a Macbook Air February 2012, OS 10.7.2
Not sure why, but I can't open iPhoto.  Here's what I have tried.
Original message on MBPro:  "You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto".
    1.  Tried to rebuild library as per this thread https://discussions.apple.com/message/8429269#8429269.  I get the list of checkboxes, but when I hit "okay" I get the same "you can't open your current photo library ..." message again.
    2.  Ran software update - no sign that iPhoto is out of date.
    3.  Copied new version of iPhoto from brand new MBAir to MBPro, replacing older version .  Got same "you can't open your current photo library ..." message again.
    4.  Tried to rebuild library using new version of iPhoto - guess what - same message.
    5.  Downloaded free trial version of iPhoto Library Manager as suggested in the thread referenced above.  The dmg loads to my desktop just fine but nothing happens when I click on it -- this has never happened before.  Perhaps it is looking for iPhoto, which of course I can't get to work.
So I have been unable to access my old iPhoto library with (sob) thousands and thousands of family photos in it.  I run TimeMachine on to an external hard drive every hour so I hope that if my iPhoto library is corrupted, there is a safe copy on that external drive ...
Between this hassle -- hours of time wasted -- and recent debacle of upgrading iTunes which erased my library and all of my playlists, which also took hours and hours to restore ... my 25 year devotion to Apple products is taking a major hit.  I'm getting very weary of heart-pounding fear every time a new software upgrade arrives ... but that's a topic for another time. ;-)
Thank you very much indeed for all suggestions.

I'm going to start from scratch as  the link you references is very, very old.
Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and try to create a new, test library and import some photos. If you are able to then the problem lies with your current library. If you get the same message then maybe the iPhoto application is the problem.
Try the following again:  make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy)  of your library and apply the three fixes in order as necessary.
    Fix #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your HD/User/Home()/ Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your HD/User/Home()/Library /Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #3
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If all of these fail there's one more option:
Start over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1.  Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
    2. Open the library package like this.
    3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    4. Drag the each subfolder in the Originals folder (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the entire Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.

    Hi
My am using a 2008 MBP which appears to have difficuoly in loading programs,  Or even at log in!   Please advise.  BTW I ave removed old binary files etc with no difference noted.  That Beach ball is driving me mad.
Can amyone suggest a reason for this?  Ot is it wear amd tear (!!) - it is 4 years young.  I adore it.
Thank you and apologies for ignorance in advance!

note  --       My Imac which I left happily at Snow Leopard is still faster than the MBPro and older!

    Metacalf,
I have the same model MacBook Pro as you, and I’m running OS X 10.9.4 on mine without problems. I’d highly recommend that you upgrade your RAM; our model can work with 16 GB of RAM when Mac OS X 10.7.5 or newer is installed. I’ve got 8 GB in mine, but I’m not doing any video editing; you’d probably find 16 GB to be best. If your video editing is disk-bound, then you’d also benefit by replacing your internal HDD with a SSD.

  • Connecting and older AirPort Extreme to my MBPro Retina (MBPr)

I have a older AirPort Extreme ( the round white saucer type) maybe 2005? Was give to me by a friend. I am trying to hook up the AirPort E and the airport Utiltiy see it. But when I click on the base station I get this "This version of AirPort Utility doesn’t support this base station. Go to AirPort Service and Support for more information. Also in the AirPort Utility page it shows the world glob that has a green light and then down from that my AirPort Extreme and it has NO green light.
I have click onto the support link and downloaded the utility 5.6 but that can't be intalled. It tell me it's not supported by any of the drives or something like that?
My intenet, I use AT&T 2wire & the Ethernet cable connect to the AirPort E. I can print with USB connect to my MBPr but not via Wifi. I can print from my iPad using a Handyprint app.
What I like to do is print wifi without haveing to use the USB and I like to set up my AirPort E basestation. Can anyone help me? I don't really want to buy a newer basestation. I was never able to print via wifi on this MBPr and even before i used the handyprint app. However, I have print via wifi on a PC with the basestation hooked up just like I have hooked up with on my MBPr.
I hope you can understand my question, I am not very good at posting my question. New to the Mac world. I also look for support in the forms but could not get fine what I need.
Thanks ahead of time for any help!

Just another reason to never use an Apple router. All other routers I have ever heard of use a Web Browser to do all configurations. I have a router I bought in the early 2000s that I can still use if I like, actually several of them.
Leave it to Apple to restrict access to older Airport base stations making people that think they need to buy a new Apple router to go with their Apple computer.
Just give that Airport base station back to your friend or stick it in a closet. You don't need an Apple router. Any router will work, or should work, with any Apple computer or other Apple device.

Yes... but I have come across some setups that came with a native SL (and even one Lion!) installation.. that somehow had a corrupted or older Prokit installed for some unknown reason... and given it's a quick fix to try.. I thought I'd mention it..
I frankly don't think it is entirely a Prokit issue itself, but it wouldn't do any harm to try and install v7 just in case it is part of the problem...
    +1 on the UAD stuff....
Also, at the time it crashed... according to the logs...the OP was running Ableton Live at the same time, presumably rewired with Logic... so add all that together with UAD plugins... and that's quite a load on the system...

  • Which MBPro setup w/ext. display do I want?

I recently purchased a 15" early 2008 MBPro (glossy) at a great price but my sister just asked me to pick out a new Mac for her. I therefore get a second chance at deciding what my own optimum system is as she will take my several week old MBPro if I choose to go with another system for myself.
My use is primarily digital photography. Also light video conversion and editing, general productivity, web development/maintenance, personal stuff like web surfing, e-mail, flight sim, i-chat, i-tunes, and so forth.
I just had a real look at the new aluminum MBP 15" and was impressed with it. I find the ability to use the new Apple LED display particularly attractive, as this monitor has been well reviewed and is attractively priced. Is this a good choice for calibration for color accuracy, or should I go for something like the NEC 2690 WUXI, which features high bit lookup table and calibration solution (for about $400 more)? If the NEC is better, I might as well stick to the early 2008 MBPro, possibly changing it for the matte screen version (available now at big discount). If the new Apple LED display will give as good or better performance for digital photography, then it might behoove me to go for the new MBPro as this monitor offers some nice features and would be seamlessly all-Apple. The total cost for either choice works out about the same.
To summarize, my choices are either spend more money on the NEC monitor and less on the blowout early 08 MBPro, or spend less money on the Apple LED display and more on the late 08 MBPro. The older MBPro also has an additional slight advantage over the new one in that it comes in a matte screen version. Any insights appreciated as I need to move on a purchase decision. Thanks in advance for comments!

I've never seen a way to do that for a Mac that shipped with ML. The very first thing I'd do with such a new Mac is clone the hard drive to an external drive and then never touch that partition for anything but to boot to in order to clone it back to the main drive as a "fresh" install.
You can use Disk Utility to create a clone, or either of two excellent third party choices; SuperDuper! and Carbon Copy Cloner.

  • Hi. I setup an external hard drive on my AirPort Extreme to act as a central disk for multiple iPhoto libraries. I have a new iMac with iPhoto '11 and an MBPro with iPhoto '09. I'm getting an error message saying different versions. Ideas?

Long title. Sorry. It pretty much explains the situation. I'd like to have all of my photos from two (ultimately three) computers on this central file and be able to access them from any of the computers. The error message I get when I start up my MBPro is: "You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto" and, "You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto." It then forces me to quit iPhoto. I have tried the suggestion of holding down the opt key on iPhoto startup, but it doesn't seem to help.
    Two questions:
Can I store multiple iPhoto libraries on the same central disc?
If so, how should I address the error message?
    Thank you!

Hey Kappy, thank you for your help! Yes, I can open both libraries on the iMac without problem. I am still confused why the computer that created one of the libraries cannot open said library after it was moved to the external disk. Why is the iPhoto format not readable by all versions across the board?? The reason I'm pushing the issue is because in my household, we have an older MB, my wife's MBP, my MBP and now a new "family" iMac. The MB (circa 2007) has an old version of iPhoto, the two MBP's have iPhoto '08 and the new iMac has '11. It is my goal to have all of the photos that we've accrued over the years, located centrally, and accessible from all of these computers. Is iPhoto the most appropriate program, or would Lightroom make more sense?

  • Workaround for dropping signal in MBPro and A Extreme Basestation

I've been struggling with an erratic signal in my MBPro 2Ghz 2 Mb, week 15, when used with wireless networks. I tried most of the workarounds posted elsewhere and nothing seem to work. In my case, I would acquire a wireless connection, and then I would watch the signal drop in level, then rise, then drop. Eventually, after the computer was put to sleep, it would never reacquire the network. With the Airport Extreme Base station (v5.7), this was most annoying. I changed all possible settings and preferences, zapped PRAM, reinstalled the system, tried all channels, interference options, etc. I tried with the MBPro literally underneath, a couple of inches away, from the base station, and I could always reproduce this. I set my PowerBook G4 15 1Ghz Ti next to it, and it worked flawlessly, the signal level steady as it could be at max.
I then thought it could be a problem only when in 802.11g mode. So I switched the base station to only work in 802.11b. Voila! Everything is good, the signal is now at max and steady. Wake from sleep now acquires the network fine too. I then switched the base station back to 802.11g/b mode, and the problems came back again. Then, I tried switching the base station to 802.11g alone, and again all was good! In my case, it seems that setting the base station to work only in 802.11g or 802.11b instead of in mixed mode solved all my connection problems.
I have now been running a couple of days without a hitch. I am not sure why working on a 802.11g/b mixed setting would cause problems. There are four computers connected to this base station. Two have Airport Extreme cards, two are older macs with airport (802.11b) cards. In this setup, and maybe someone may correct me if I am wrong, the whole network reverts to work only at 802.11b. So I am not sure why setting it to work only on 802.11b solves the problems for the MacBook Pro.
Any clues why this could be working?

I can confirm this as well. I'm a networking engineer by trade and I use a Juniper Networks NetScreen 5GT Wireless for my home AP and Router/FW. When it's operating in 802.11b/g mode, for some reason, my 15" MBP (brand new) would get ~20-30% packet loss to the WAP itself. Same MBP on an Ethernet connection to the NetScreen gets 0% loss. Sitting my MBP right next to my IBM ThinkPad, same wireless SSID and network (802.11g) the MBP would get the 20-30% packet loss with the ThinkPad getting 0%. I changed the AP to 802.11b ONLY or 802.11g ONLY and the MBP get's 0% packet loss. Turning on debugs on the AP indicate heavy errors when it's in a b/g mode ONLY on the MBP.

  • New to Mac.  How to use legacy SCSI devices with MBPro?

If I have, say... an older external SCSI tape drive, how could I make it work with my new MBPro?

*My (PC formatted) iPod is set to manual sync already, but will my new Mac know that when I first connect it*
Yes it will, the iPod retains it setting no matter what computer it is connected to.
*The version of iTunes on my Mac is the newest but there's a slightly older version on the iPod. Is this a problem?*
You don't have any version of iTunes on your iPod it has it's own software, you only have iTunes on the computer.
*How can I save the music and video on my Mac while I import my iPod's contents? (Where do I move the file? How do I prevent multiple copies of everything*
You don't need to do anything with the music that is on your iPod, you can select what content you want Senuti to copy back so there's no reason you should get duplicates.
*Will photos and games on iPod transfer too?*
I don't believe Senuti will transfer games, if they were purchased from iTunes the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
Senuti will not transfer Photos. There are various programs out there for recovering photos from an iPod, have a look at the ones below. If you search the internet you can find more. Just be aware that what you'll be recovering will be photos optimised for the iPod so they won't be the same quality as the original full resolution versions:
iPod Photo Liberator Mac & Windows

  • Will the Cinema Display work with an older MacBook Air?

My wife has an older MacBook Air (circa late 2009) with one USB 2.0 port and one Mini Display port. Will the Cinema display work with this model Air?

It looks to me like the cinema display is a DVI connection.  If  you have a MiniDisplay port to DVI adapter that connected the MBpro to the display then you have everything you need.  (plus a DVI cable).   The MDP adapter plugs into the Thunderbolt port of the MBair.

  • Are drivers available somewhere for older hp designjet

I have an older HP design jet that works just great with my pc.  Would like to plot using my MBpro, but HP doesn't have a driver.
Any ideas where to turn to?

You'll probably need to post the specific model of DesignJet you have before anyone can offer suggestions. If HP doesn't have drivers, it's not likely that you'll find any, but post the model and perhaps you'll get lucky. I'd suggest posting in the Mac OS X forum, though; this forum is intended for old, pre-G3 Apple hardware, and as such doesn't get a lot of traffic.
    Regards.

  • Is the current 15" MBPro 2.3/16/512 compatible with OSX10.6.8?

My other Macs and software are all using 10.6.8, and it would be simpler for me to use 10.6.8 on a new MBPro rather than shift everything to the current OSX.

A Mac is never able to start up an OS that is older than the one that it shipped with. I can't think of an exception to this rule.
10.6.8 was a very good, stable OS X but I think the current Mavericks is the best one since then.

Is this an older "round" version of the AirPort Extreme? If yes, it is true that AirPort Utility 6.x no longer supports the older AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express models.
A model number......located on the bottom of the Extreme or on the side of the Express would be helpful to confirm what you have.
Apple probably does want you to buy a new AirPort Extreme.
The workaround might be to use a Mac or PC running a 5.x version of AirPort Utility.
A more complicated workaround would be to install AirPort Utility 5.6 on Mountain Lion.  This is not supported by Apple......it does work for me.....but may not work for you. See this article for more details:

  • Complicated Problem with Aperture/Older Macs

Hope someone can help me figure this out?   I will try to be as concise as possible.
I have a 2006 Mac Pro that will only run as high as 10.7.5 and will NOT run Aperture 3.X   On that Mac I have Aperture 2.X with over 4K images.
I also have two MBPs.  One is a Mid 2010, on which I stupidly loaded Mavericks without realizing how it would screw up working with my Mac Pro.  The other is a brand new MBP which has 10.10.X on it.  So far, I have not even moved my aperture library to this new MBP.
So; I am stuck in a seam here.  I can't run Aperture 3.X on my Mac Pro, but I can't run Aperture 2.X on my older MBP. I can't upgrade my Mac Pro, but have already upgraded past point of no return on my older MBP.    I have a somewhat large (30+gig) aperture library in Aperture 2.X I want to preserve of course.
I have read everything I can find about Apple moving to one platform i.e. Photos from both Aperture and iPhoto, and have read that I will be "fine".  Whenever someone tells me I will be "fine" I start to worry.
If this is understandable and someone can help, I appreciate it.
    Thanks

I agree that Mr. Lloyd has offered some good conservative advice. But this is a complicated problem. Since you do have a new MBP running Yosemite, I would suggest that you update to the latest version of Yosemite on this new MBP and then purchase the latest (and apparently last) 3.6 version of Aperture and 9.6 version of iPhoto that will be offered in the App store - and then download both Aperture3.6 and the latest version of iPhoto 9.6 to your new Yosemite MBP.
Then go back to your mid 2010 MBP that is running Mavericks, and update that platform to the latest version of Yosemite. Then you can download the latest version of Aperture 3.6 (since you just purchased it for your newest MBP) and iPhoto 9.6 to your updated Yosemite-running 2010 MB. Then you can easily convert your old Aperture 3.X libraries on that 2010 MBP (now Yosemite-running) machine to the latest Aperture vers 3.6 and iPhoto vers 9.6 that you have previously purchased, downloaded and installed.
As for the "ancient" Aperture 2.X library images on your ten year-old MacBook, I would leave them where they are on the machine - carefully backed up and verified on at least one external drive. Since you cannot update that old MacBook to a current viable version of OSX Yosemite, you obviously cannot use the latest version of Aperture or iPhoto on that machine either. BUT, I do believe you can still download a more current (but older) version of iPhoto to your old MacBook, which would then allow you to convert your old Aperture 2.X libraries to newer iPhoto libraries which you could then export and convert to currentiPhoto 9.6 version libraries that you have already installed on your current OSX MBPro's. And once you have created an iPhoto 9.6 library - you can immediately open that iPhoto 9.6 library in the latest Aperture 3.6 version.
IMHO, it is always easier to try and keep all your multiple mac platforms updated and running the same OSX  - and updated and running the latest versions of all important cross-platform software.

  • MBpro kills Netgear WGR614 network connection

Hi, I'm new to the mac but quite experenced in networking with Windows.
I've a brand new MBpro-intel and from the beginning I have trouble with my Netgear router WGR614v3. It's my first Mac.
It worked perfectly with several XP machines but connecting the MBpro wireless causes a complete kill (i have to reset the router by the button).
Most of the time it happens over wireless connection.
I've tried both secure (WEP) and unsecure login to the wireless network.
What hapens is depending from the site I visit, several work ok, but when I visit http://www.macmiep.nl/ (a perfect site for mac dummies) the
site will open, but scrolling true its menu kills my netgear.
After that networking doesn't work anymore, even on other windows machines the Netgear connection falls down.
Frustrated by this unsuccesfully searching hours and hours for a sollution I connected the MBpro wired, directly to the Netgear.
It seemed allright for a few hours, but suddenly same problem occured, netgear killed...
Can someone give my any clue what to do?
I've allready updated software, also from 2007-001 but still no luck.

Interesting. I found thay Linksys products have been the most unreliable for me. The wireless router I had had problems with signal strength dropping to zero, Macbook Pro losing connection and unable to restablish, the network information in the router wouldn't show all connections (I was trying to troubleshoot my problems and couldn't), etc. On my older wired Linksys router, I was unable to do a firmware update and it would time out when I tried connecting to the internal setup functions to look at logs and make setup changes. I had one Linksys cable modem go bad (though the second one has been fine). My luck with Linksys has stunk so I don't recommend them as an alternative to Netgear.
I now have a Netgear FVG318 wireless router. It has been flawless so far, though I've only had it a few weeks. Plus it has 8 wired ports versus the 4 that most others have. Most of my stuff is hardwired and I max out a 4 port router.
