McAfee frequently warns me that Firefox is trying to accept incoming connections from the Internet and asks me whether or not I want to allow or block this - what is this all about?

I cannot find any reference to this sort of activity by Firefox on your website. It is an '.exe' program location and McAfee warns me that "Hackers can use programs to steal your personal information or hijack your PC".
Can you please confirm that these incoming connections are legitimate Firefox activity, and if so please explain what they are, why they are required by Firefox and why there appears to be no reference to this activity on your website. Many thanks.

Hi Cor-el,
Thanks for your response.
No, unfortunately McAfee does not give any more detail as to the origin of these incoming connections - is there a way to find out from McAfee?
I would have thought that Mozilla Firefox should have the answers, but I have been unable to find any reference to this issue on their website, Help section etc.
Could it be the way my Options are configured? - although I've not changed them from the Default settings as far as I can remember.
Cheers,
GWhatsitworth.

  • I just got a new Mac Airbook with MAC OS 10.6.8 and now every time I load Firefox, it tells me it was downloaded from the internet and am I sure I want to open it. How can get rid of that message?

I know this is a standard MAC message but I never got it with Firefox before changing computers. I also downloaded Firefox 5.0 and it is still doing it.

Thanks, Jim, for taking the time, but the reply is unfortunately vague in the exact area of my confusion!  "you need to copy that file to your new computer..."  Well, the Import/Export instructions make it seem as if the two computers should be able to communicate this file thru wifi, but that's the linkage I can't seem tocreate with Import/Export.  Should I instead email a copy to myself (thats what applecare suggested)?  Copy it to and from a thumb drive?  But then place the file where?  And the article was helpful, but should I be trying to move the Library file or the Library.xml file (as iTunes Help suggests)?  Sorry to be so clueless about it...I suppose I buy Apple in the hopes of not having to think about this stuff, which approach seems not to be serving me well. Thanks again for your time!

As mentioned, starting with version of Premiere Elements that is being used and the computer operating system on which it is running are important in generating troubleshooting strategy.
But, the description of what you wrote caught my attention with the words "trying to start" and mention of need for Internet connection when you knew one existed. What was the exact full message from the program in this regard?
Depending on further details from you, you may have run into the same issue that I did recently. I have written about the experience including the remedy
ATR Premiere Elements Troubleshooting: PE12: Sign In Failure (Connect to Internet or Fix Computer Clock)
The answer for me was to update the Adobe Application Manager as per the input of an Adobe Staff member. Details in the above blog post.

I created a book on iPhoto. I click on the buy button, and I get a  message that says Connecting with a moving blue striped rectangle. I am connected to the internet and I have made books before without any problems. I have tried for the past two weeks at various times and I get this same message each time. Any ideas about what is going on?

First confirm that you can create a PDF file of your book as described in this Apple document: iPhoto '11: Preview a book, card, or calendar before you order or print it. Post back with the results.

  • Updated firefox, now I am unable to connect to the internet via mozilla but other browsers still work

When mozilla asked my for an update several months ago I chose to skip the install and wait. Did the install soon after and firefox stopped working even though my connection to the internet is fine. I uninstalled mozilla firefox, used another browser to access the mozilla website to reinstall firefox. This fixed my problem and firefox was working again, until another update came along. This time attempting to uninstall and reinstall did nothing. Once again I am left using another browser to use the support forum and firefox is not working. Please help!!

That is an indication that a firewall is blocking the new version of Firefox. For details see [[Firefox cannot load websites but other programs can]].

  • "Firefox" is an application which was downloaded from the Internet - Open?

Everytime I go to open up programs (for example, firefox) I get a dialog box like this:
“Firefox” is an application which was downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it?
Underneath it says "AppFresh downloaded this file on May 3, 2009". These programs are installed via an administrator, but I don't want to have to click yes every time on my standard account. What can I do?

    Peter:
I don't want to have to click yes every time on my standard account.
As noted in earlier posts, you should get that message the first time you launch firefox or any other downloaded application. If you get the message each time, for some reason the computer thinks it is the first time you are launching the application. Are you sure that the application is installed in the application folder? Or are you launching from the .dmg each time? If you are,
double click on the .dmg file.
When it opens drag the icon to the Applications folder and it will be permanently installed. You will need to authenticate to install, but you should not have to authenticate each time you launch the application.
Drag any icon that you have in the Dock to the Desktop
    Then launch the application.
If you want to keep it on the dock click and hold on the icon
Select Keep in Dock in the pop-up menu.

Try this support document http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694 and look at this section.
Unable to contact the iOS software update server gs.apple.com
Error 1004, 1013, 1638, 3194: These errors may be the result of the connection to gs.apple.com being redirected or blocked. Follow these steps to resolve these errors:
Install the latest version of iTunes.
Check security software. Ensure that communication to gs.apple.com is allowed. Follow this article for assistance with security software. iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting security software issues.
Check the hosts file. The restore will fail if there is an active entry to redirect gs.apple.com. Follow iTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting to edit the hosts file or revert to a default hosts file. See section "Blocked by configuration: (Mac OS X/Windows) > Rebuild network information".
Try to restore from another known-good computer and network.
If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.

  • Could you please tell me why as a Brit resident in Japan therefore having a billing address that is Japanese is forced to only get service from the Japanese online store? Is there not some way of allowing me to select movies and music to buy and download

Could you please tell me why as a Brit resident in Japan therefore having a billing address that is Japanese is forced to only get service from the Japanese online store? Is there not some way of allowing me to select movies and music to buy and download from other stores. Why do am i forced to try to nread Japanese when I have selected English as my language. The price for Downloads is no different and even if it was I am happy to pay. This also applies to Movie rental which is crazy and extremely restrictive. I a supposed GLOBAL community why does Apple do this.

You can buy ONLY from the itunes store of your country of residence (As proven by valid billing address of credit card) and ONLY while inside the borders of that country.
These are the terms of the itunes store.

  • My ipod 5th gen says it is connected to the internet and i can go on apps that require an internet connection but whe i try to use the weather or another app that uses your current location it cant find me???

My ipod 5th gen says it is connected to the internet and i can go on apps that require an internet connection but whe i try to use the weather or another app that uses your current location it cant find me???

If you open the Maps app where does that say you are located?
For location the iPod uses the location of nearby routers that are in Apple's database of routers and their location. Thus it appears that Apple's database is incorrect. You do not have to be connected to the router, just within range.
Apple periodically updates their database based on information they obtain from iPhones, The iPhone has to have turned on the option to send info to Apple. no one has found another way to get the location of a router added/corrected.
You can confirm that by going to well-know place with wifi like Starbucks or McDonalds

    Hi Patrick,
I'm starting to think it's either an AirPort card issue or something to do with the Mac OS. I have stopped using wireless as much as possible in my home (have wired up several new Ethernet outlets), and it sure is nice having Internet run at the speed it's supposed to all the time, and with no drops. Might be something to consider.
    In the meantime:
Open System Preferences > Network > select AirPort > click on Advanced > TCP/IP > Configure IPv6 > Off > OK > Apply > Turn AirPort Off > Turn AirPort On
    Open System Preferences > Network > select Ethernet > click on Advanced > TCP/IP > Configure IPv6 > Off > OK > Apply
(FOR LION: If you can’t see an option to turn ipv6 off, set it to link-local only.)
