Mcfee Software has detected viruses and trojans

Bought laptop 2 days ago and installed McFee software (as recommended). McFee scan says computer is virus free and no problems found.
Problem is I have various warnings on pop ups saying system has up to 23 viruses and trojans detected "system is about to crash".
Anyone know what is going on?

Just out of curiosity, who recommends you to install McFee?
I dont know what is wrong there but maybe this McFee has detected some Toshiba specific stuff and has identified them as virus. I dont know what is listed as virus.
Contact McFee manufacturer and ask for help. Toshiba doesnt support this third part software.

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed one or more of the common types of ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it. It's been reported that some variants of the "VSearch" malware block access to the page. If that happens, start in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime, then try again.
Back up all data before making any changes.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, ask for further instructions.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. It may have come from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
Malware is also found on websites that traffic in pirated content such as video. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

  • What should I do if my imac has a virus and my email has been hacked

what should I do if my imac has a virus and my email has been hacked

when you say your email has been hacked... Do you mean that people are telling you that they are getting emails from you that you never sent?
It is possible that it is a virus, but also it could have been due to a phishing scam.
Another possibility could be that someone is using a script or program that uses your email as an Alias (Mask) to cover up who the email is really being sent from.
As far as what to do if you think you have a virus, just make sure your software is up to date by clicking the () in the upper left and then click 'Software Update'.
You can get virus scanner software, and antivirus programs as well as Rudegar said as well.
Is anything else behaving abnormally other than your email?

  • Keep getting error message that iphoto has detected inconsistencies and needs to rebuild

while adding photos to library keep getting error message that iphoto has detected inconsistencies and needs to rebuild the library..how do I fix?

    By rebuilding your library.
Back up your iPhoto library before you do that.
If iPhoto is open, quit it.
Hold down the Option and Command keys while you open iPhoto (click the iPhoto icon in the Dock).
The Photo Library First Aid window opens.
Click "Rebuild database" and click the "rebuild" button.
If this does not solve the problem, see "option 2" in Terence Devlin's post here:

How can I reset my Mac to default settings? Or how can I reset it to a prior date? My Mac has a virus and I would like to get rid of it. I would appreciate your help concerning this matter.

To restore it follow these instructions: What to do before selling or giving away your Mac.
    Before you do the above check out the following;
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Problems
If you are having an immediate problem with ads popping up see The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide, AdwareMedic, or Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac - Apple Support.
Open Safari, select Preferences from the Safari menu. Click on Extensions icon in the toolbar. Disable all Extensions. If this stops your problem, then re-enable them one by one until the problem returns. Now remove that extension as it is causing the problem.
The following comes from user stevejobsfan0123. I have made minor changes to adapt to this presentation.
Fix Some Browser Pop-ups That Take Over Safari.
Common pop-ups include a message saying the government has seized your computer and you must pay to have it released (often called "Moneypak"), or a phony message saying that your computer has been infected, and you need to call a tech support number (sometimes claiming to be Apple) to get it resolved. First, understand that these pop-ups are not caused by a virus and your computer has not been affected. This "hijack" is limited to your web browser. Also understand that these messages are scams, so do not pay any money, call the listed number, or provide any personal information. This article will outline the solution to dismiss the pop-up.
    Quit Safari
Usually, these pop-ups will not go away by either clicking "OK" or "Cancel." Furthermore, several menus in the menu bar may become disabled and show in gray, including the option to quit Safari. You will likely have to force quit Safari. To do this, press Command + option + esc, select Safari, and press Force Quit.
    Relaunch Safari
If you relaunch Safari, the page will reopen. To prevent this from happening, hold down the 'Shift' key while opening Safari. This will prevent windows from the last time Safari was running from reopening.
This will not work in all cases. The shift key must be held at the right time, and in some cases, even if done correctly, the window reappears. In these circumstances, after force quitting Safari, turn off Wi-Fi or disconnect Ethernet, depending on how you connect to the Internet. Then relaunch Safari normally. It will try to reload the malicious webpage, but without a connection, it won't be able to. Navigate away from that page by entering a different URL, i.e. www.apple.com, and trying to load it. Now you can reconnect to the Internet, and the page you entered will appear rather than the malicious one.

  • Do i need anti-virus and trojan etc. protection?

i am new to mac's and just wondering if i need some software or something for protection from the internet. i know on my old PC i needed all the protection i could get, but I don't know if leopard already has something to protect my computer? and if i need another program, what should i use?
    Thanks

Mac OS X by design is probably more secure than Windows. There are no known viruses (and I mean this in the strict sense of the definition of virus) that affect OS X today.
That's not to say there will never be, and that's not to say that things like Trojan Horses (things that, if you run them, will cause damage to your system) don't exist. Because I could write a 1-line shell script that would delete your entire home folder, and I could write a little app and a few lines that, if you entered your password, could send an email to every user in your address book with a spam. If you the user okay that, I can do anything I want.
So what does this mean? It means you can use anti-virus or other "protective" stuff, or you can exercise a modicum of caution and do without. Personally, I'm in the latter category, as I think that type of software causes way more problems on the Mac than it solves... but I can't always recommend it for everyone. I know I get emails from my mom (who uses a Mac) about once every 4 months asking about some bizarre behavior she's seeing and whether it means she has a virus (she doesn't). For her, the peace of mind of having AV may be worth it (to me, if not to her )

  • I cannot download iTunes. It gets completely loaded and then says that itunes has a virus and was deleted. I uninstalled itunes and it still will not download it. Any suggestions??

I recently had a virus on my computer and took it into the shop to have it repaired. Ever since, I have not been able to open iTunes. So I uninstalled iTunes thinking that I could reinstall it and it would work. How ever wrong I was! It will download completely, but then it says that itunes had a virus and was deleted. I don't get how it could have a virus if its not on my computer??? I'm extremely frustrated!!!!!! Please Help!

iTunes, if downloaded from Apple, has no virus.
Turn off the security software on the computer temporarily.  Ultimately the security software needs to be updated or replaced with a software package that works properly.

  • I can't log out of my iTunes on my old laptop because it has a virus and won't turn on, and this means i can't add/sync new music to my iPod on my new laptop.

it's getting really irritating since i now have an awful lot of CDs stacking up since i can't add them to my iPod, any suggestions on what to do WITHOUT erasing my iPod content?

Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
Here are some general guidelines. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickYourMac.” First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickyourmac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickYourMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickYourMac.” If not, open “BrickYourMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button.
You may have to log out or reboot in order to complete an uninstallation.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase your boot volume and perform a clean reinstallation of OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" that purport to remove software.

  • Help! Safari keeps telling me my Mac has a virus and now the back button won't work. Do I really have a virus and what should I do to fix the problem?

Yesterday my MacBook Pro began running slower and now Safari continues to be redirected to a page saying 'WARNING: Your PC maybe INFECTED. Call TECH SUPPORT at 800-797-0153 to clean your computer. www.consumeronlineservices.com'.
The back button in Safari now refuses to work, and I'm unsure if this is a problem with Safari or my laptop (honest to God, I know nothing about computers). Anyways, I tried to call the number given, but there was no answer, and I'm assuming this is the actual virus itself.
How can I get my laptop running back to normal? Is there a way to check for a virus and remove it?
    Thanks!

Do not respond to that message. There are no known viruses on OSX systems. What you are seeing is a total scam.
Open Safari then go to Preferences>Privacy. Remove all Cookies and Website data. Set the Block Cookies option to Block 3rd Parties and Advertisers:

  • Sophos found a virus and trojan in Time Machine backup. What to do?

I ran Sophos Anti-Virus last night and it found two Windows viruses (one of them is Troj/20120158-P, a trojan, the other is Mal/TibsPk-A, a "malicious behavior" type). Both are attachments on emails that are in Time Machine only. Obviously I'm not worried about them affecting the Mac, but I'd like to avoid accidentally sending them to some poor victim who's using Windows.
I can track down the files by going into the drive and manually deleting them, but would that mess up Time Machine? Is there a better solution?
    Thanks!

You should never poke around in your Time Machine backups to delete files in the Finder. That can damage the backups. You also should make sure that Sophos does not attempt to quarantine files from your Time Machine backup. In fact, you probably should ensure that Sophos (and any other anti-virus software) never touches your Time Machine backups in any way, even just for scanning. Let Sophos do its job of keeping the malware off your main hard drive, and leave Time Machine alone to back up freely without interference.
As for how to handle those e-mail messages in your backups, I would just leave them. They're not doing any harm there, and there's almost no chance that a chain of circumstances would arise that would result in you restoring those messages and then sending them to a Windows user. They will eventually be removed from your backups, when the backup drive fills up and Time Machine has to start removing the oldest deleted files from the backup to make room for new stuff.

  • My new iPhone 5 has a virus or trojan. IT IS NOT JAIL BROKEN!

My phone starts to open and close apps on its own. When I press a key an unrelated key responds. The settings area has locked me out of the reset area. I can not close apps. If I turn the phone on and off, this is all sometimes fixed for a short period of time. I have rest set the settings when I can get in. I have the security code on. Can apple look through my apps and find out where the virus/trojan is coming from and get rid of it? I have erased all of the content on my phone and started over. How do I prevent this from happening again.

If it's not jailbroken, then it's not infected.
From your description, you may have a defective touch-screen. Take it to the Apple Store and have it evaluated.
