Mechanics of reference counters in GC?

I was thinking about Flash GC the other day and came up with a question about how reference counting would work in the following 4 class scenario (assume GuiMain is the movie's document class):

When the Button2 and Test instances are created in Button1, I would expect their reference counters to increment. The question is, do their reference counters decrement accordingly when the Button1 object that created them is removed from the display list and nulled out? I tested this code and the event listener in the Test class does seem to shut off, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it or the Button2 instance are eligible for GC. Even if they were, it might only be under Mark and Sweep, which is slower than reference count-based GC.
One obvious solution would be to have the Button1 class remove listeners from/null out references it makes when it is time for it to be removed like so:

but in a real program, where I may be working with multiple references to the same object from different classes (via passing in the original references in constructors) wouldn't setting the reference in one class to null cause the value of all other references to the same object to also become null? That would certainly be undesirable...
The main question is as follows: when the only reference to Button1 is nulled out, do all the the objects it references have their reference counters decremented (either immediately or when the Button1 object is garbage collected)?
Also, is there a way to view all instances of an object that exist in real time and/or their reference count values through the Flash debugger?  A detailed profiler like that would really help in figuring these questions out...

to answer the last bit, flash builder premium has a good profiler and you could also try Monster Debugger - its free and i think it has a profiler

  • WMI Class Reference for Dynamics CRM Performance Counters

    Hello,
    I am trying to monitor a MS Dynamics CRM 2013 instance using the
    Performance Counters provided. 
    I will be writing VB Script to collect the performance counter data via WMI. 
    I couldn't find out the WMI class reference the Dynamics CRM 2013 performance counters.  
    What I meant was, some thing similar to the 'Windows Server Cluster' Object and Performance counter class, as given below.

  • How do you use the counters on board

    I am involved in the development of a LabVIEW VI for the acquisition and processing of signals generated by a chip under test; my application provides two signals having the waveforms sketched in the attached figure.
    With reference to this figure, I should generate a digital pulse just after a pulse on signal 1, also in case of no pulses on signal 2.
    I am using the board PCI 6110 with LabVIEW 6i: I tryed to use the counters implemented on the board to generate my signal. My idea is to count the pulses of signal 1 with a counter and, if it is possible, to reset the counter on a rising edge of the signal 2. By so doing, when the counter assumes the value “2”, it must generate an impulse. Unfortunately I have not su
    cceeded to implement this procedure.
    Please, could you suggest me how to implement this solution, or, if this is not possible, any other procedure to accomplish the required task?

    I've tried to think of a method to implement this for a while, but the one fundamental obstacle I keep coming across is that it seems the system must have a deterministic output. (It has to identify the gaps and generate the pulse while on the fly.) It is easy to acquire the two signals and even determining when the gaps occur. The problem is getting your software to recognize this and generate the output fast enough. You could possibly do this with a LabVIEW RT system.
    On the other hand, I have thought of a way you could do this with a 660x counter/timer board using quadrature encoder position measurement mode. The problem with the 6110 is that it's counter/timers do not support this mode. With the 660x board in encoder position measurement m
    ode, you can wire signal 1 to the source (which increments the counter) and signal 2 to the z-index (which resets the counter to a specified value). You would have this specified value set to be 2 less than the terminal count. If you recieved two signal 1 pulses without any signal 2 pulses, the counter would reach terminal count which triggers a short pulse to be generated on the output and this could be your output signal.
    If you do decide to go this route, our technical support can assist you further with this after you have the hardware.

  • Version 4 Error: Expected Container, found Object Reference

    We're in the process of upgrading our sequences from 3.5 to
    4.0 and for the most part, everything is seamless.  However, there is one situation I’ve found
    that throws a RTE in 4.0 but works fine in 3.5. 
    When calling SetPropertyObject on an object reference, the following
    error is thrown:
    Parameter 'newValue': Expected Container, found Object Reference.
    -17308; Specified value does not have the expected type.
    Attached is a sequence snippet illustrating this
    behavior.  The last step should assign
    the variable in Parameters with the name in TempStr (“Fred” in this example) to
    the first element in the TraceObjRefs array (an array of object references).  
    What is really confounding is that this works as expected in
    3.5.  Any insight as to what changed or
    what’s the best way to work around this?

    We are seeing something similar in TS 4.1.
    We have a container with subproperties which are also containers (of the same type actually). Technically, this is an array, we are using the container to be able to address by name. When I extract one of the sub-properties either by GetPropertyObject or by GetNthSubproperty and then try to assign it to a container of the same type, I get the error "Expected container, found object reference".
    I attached a sequence with some experiments, using the NI_Limits type  and found a solution: the Evaluate method seems to actually copy the values from the source container to the target; but only when it is not called as "PropertyObject.Evaluate()" but stand alone.
    But I did not quite understand the mechanics of the aliases. In the sequence, I create an alias, as indicated in the previous posts. Then I can apparently not change that alias again. I used the "Data" member in the NI_Limits container to differentiate between the individual containers.
    After the second SetPropertyObject, the value stays the same as before. But when I then change the value in one of the source objects, the other changes with it.
    So I am not quite clear what an alias actually is and what its effects are.

  • SSAS performance counters do not appear in Internet Explorer

    I created a few SSAS memory related performance counters (eg MSAS 2008:Memory\Memory Limit Low KB, \MSAS 2008:Memory\Memory Limit High KB etc) to monitor memory and saved it as .html (as I have done previously).
    When I open this .html file in IE 11, these performance counters do not get loaded.
    My machine details are as follows
    OS: Windows 8 (64 Bit)
    SQL Server 2008R2 (64 Bit)
    IE (i believe) is also 64 bit. For reference my IE 11's version is 11.0.9600.17126IS. 
    Previously these used to work and now only the SSAS counters do not seem to load. 
    Any help is appreciated.

    According to your description, you created a few SSAS memory related performance counters and save it as .html, and then open this file in IE 11, the issue is that these performance counters do not get loaded, right?
    In your scenario, you said that you IE is also 64 bit, are you sure about it? Normally, we run IE 32 bit. On 64-bit versions of Windows, there is a separate link in the Start Menu to Internet Explorer (64 bit). If there is no mention of 64-bit in the About
    IE screen, the 32-bit version is opening.  Here is a similar issue with yours, and the reason is related to the version of IE, please refer to the link below to see the detail information.

  • How to generate and output 3 TTL square waveforms with different pulse widths using counters of NI 6034E

    I just have a few questions.
     I am using the NI 6034E DAQ board in order to
    generate simultaneouly 3 different TTL digital signals, with different
    pulse width, and output these TTL signals to an external circuit that I
    am using for this application.
    The following pattern of the TTL pulses will look like this:

    what I understand,  I have to use the 2 counters, Ctr0 and Ctr1, to
    generate the TTL pulses that I desire, because the DIO lines are
    software timed only and I will not be able to produce a deterministic
    output period using these DIO lines.  Am I correct?    Also, do I have
    to use a separate counter to generate a separate TTL digital pulse.  I
    need 3 different TTL pulses and there are only 2 counters for this DAQ
    device.  The three generated TTL signals will be feed to an external
    circuit.  Concerning the hardware connections for my application, I
    assume that the generated TTL signals will be output from
    GPCTR0_OUT(pin 2)  for counter 0 and GPCTR1_OUT(pin 40) for counter 1
    of the NI 6034E. Is this correct?  Is there any way that these TTL
    signals can be output from three DIO lines(DIO0...2).

    The NI 6034E is a multifuntion DAQ device, this means you have:
      (2) counters
      (8) DIO lines (software timed)
      (16) AI, single ended
      (0) Analog Output
     You have a couple choices here:
       1. Software timed digital output of all three signals, max 1khz loop rate, non-deterministic.
       2. Hardware timed digital output of 2 signals, max 20Mhz.
       3. Hardware timed digital output of 2 signals and software timed digital output of 1 signal.
       4. Find another NI MIO board such as the NI 6251. This board will do 10Mhz pattern generation for (8) DIO lines.
    For the hardware connection, you are correct, the output for the counters will be taken from pin 2 & pin 40.  Here's the pinout for the NI 6034E for reference:
    The output of the Counters can be routed to some of the PFI's or to the RTSI connector. You can see this in MAX

  • How fast and accuracy of the FPGA's clock reference

    I may need to make a application as below, but the requested accuracy is around 10ns. Can FPGA help on it? I am new newphie on FPGA.
    - Triggered by an external pulse and start a accurate number counter for a high frequency clock signal(Maybe 100MHz)
    - Triggered by another external channel to stop the counter and lock the result.
    - From the lock result, calculate the time duration from the 1st to 2nd trigger.

    Hey Christian,
    I wonder about the accuracy you have stated for the FPGA Clock. In reference to what time the accuracy can be given as 250 ps? When dealing with the accuracy of my counters, I always assumed that the accuracy is the same as the real time clock (200ppm / 35ppm). If the accuracy is 250ps per cycle, it would be equal to an error of 1 %... or 250 ppb in one second. Both does not occur realistic to me.

  • Measure frequency with 2 counters

    I'm measuring a digital frequency signal using a PXI-6602 module using the 'high frequency with 2 counters' method.  From the examples I have found, it seems that you specify only the counter which is doing the measuring and the measurement time.  How does LabVIEW know which counter is used to generate the HF pulse reference train, for example:
    ctr 0 - measuring 200kHz signal
    ctr 1 - generating  50kHz signal
    Do I independently set up and start the ctr1 generation, and as log as it starts before the measurement commences, does LV then sort it all out without any other input?

    You should connect the signal (whose frequency needs to be measured) to Ctr-1, and there gonna be an internal connection between the output of the first counter and the gate of the second counter (as described here).

    When looking at the "Blocks" column, is that value really bytes and not blocks? The reason I ask is that in the autoreply section, I have the following data:

        Failed                         0           0           0If I divide 25356 by 214, I get 118. According to the Reference manual the default MTA BLOCK_SIZE is 1024 bytes. Could I get some clarification please? I'm also getting similarly strange numbers for the ims-ms channel. My goal is to get a handle on weekly incoming mail delivered to users' mailboxes, ie the ims-ms channel.

    If you're looking for weekly statistics, I would suggest parsing the log files, rather than trying to colledt data from the "counters".

    What counters -show shows you is indeed "blocks", by default those are 1k in size, yes. So your average message could be 118k in size. Not unreasonable.

  • Using reference counter with 6602 board

    I want to control a 6602 card in a Labview application so that I can count events in channels 1-6 depending on a reference counter in channel 0. I've set up channel 0 to count from a fixed value down to 0, and I am using hardware triggering to start all counters. Now I need something like a stop trigger to stop my event counters simultaneously when counter 0 reaches zero.
    I tried to use counter 0 output as a gate for the others, but without success. Unfortunately, the help files for the TIO counter VI's are pretty lousy (nudge, nudge), so I'd be grateful if someone could give me a hint how to solve this problem.

    Nice name I think your idea about using counter 0 output as the gate signal is the right idea. However, I would make sure to configure a couple things. The first thing I would do is configure counter 0 output for toggle mode. This means when the counter rolls beyond zero it will toggle it's output. I would alsoe configure the output to be configured as high-to-low logic. Then I would connect it to the gate of all the other counters (make sure to configure a gate on each counter). The gate should initially be high on each counter since the output of counter zero should be high. Then when it rolls or reaches terminal count it will toggle the output which will gate each of the other counters.
    Anyway, not sure i

  • How Do I Keep 2 separate counters in sync.

    I plan on using the new PCIe-6351 X Series hardware which incorporates 4 counters. The current code example enclosed works fine. My problem is, I need to measure position using the linear encoder task and get my instantaneous velocity (v= d/t) using the period task inside a correlated time reference. With the current code, each timed loop is out of sync so my position/period measurements are not synchronous. Is there a way to configure DaqMx to run these counters in a single synchronous timed loop? If so, how is such a configuration arranged?
     I am able to get the velocity using just the data from the linear encoder task, but this requires an additional software routine and my measurement accuracy suffers. It would be advantageous to incorporate an instantaneous velocity reading using the period task.
    If a new example configuration of DaqMx could be provided, that would be great.

    Try sharing the sample clock between two counter task or you can set then to start at the same start trigger.

  • MAX 2.0 recognizes my PC-TIO-10 but I cannot use the counters with MAX.

    MAX 2.0 recognizes my PC-TIO-10 board and can even run the test panel. However, only the digital I/O channels are available for configuration. Why is this? Would be nice to configure the counters too.

    You can test your counters of the PCI-TIO-10 in MAX when you click on the Counter IO tab of the Test Panel. You can test Pulse Train Generation, Single Pulse Generation, and Simple Event Counting.
    If you want to test Pulse Train Generation, you can set the frequency and the duty cycle. If you want to test Single Pulse Generation, you can choose the pulse delay and width. If you want to test Simple Event Counting, you specify what your Source is and make the physical connection, if necessary.
    You didn't mention what version of NI-DAQ driver software you are using. The latest version to support your board is NI-DAQ 6.9 which does use MAX 2.0.
    If you are not seeing the options I mentioned above, then perhaps you installed on top of an older version of NI-DAQ, causi
    ng conflicts in the software. In that case, you want to uninstall all references to NI-DAQ to clean your machine and then do a fresh install of NI-DAQ 6.9.

  • Need help with counters on PCI 6221 (37 pin)

    Hi all,
    I have a system with a PCIe 1429 connected to a Basler A504 camera and a I use a clock generator (SRS CG635) set at 3.9 kHz to trig the image acquisition.
    On the same system I need to add a PCI 6221 37
    pin to acquire :
    - 2 AI at 39 kHz, synchronized with the image acquisition. (10 AI sample for each image)
    - 1 counter to measure a frequency
    Since the accuracy of my 3.9 kHz clock is much higher than what I have on the DAQ board, I figured a nice option would be to have a retriggerable DAQmx task that generates 10 pulses at 39 kHz for each pulse received from the clock and then use this to trigger the DAQmx AI task.
    Of course this can only work if the "trigger" sources that I define for these two tasks don't take the two counters I have on the board.
    So let's describe the DAQmx tasks :
    - here's the one that generate the 39 kHz on counter 0, from the 3.9 kHz that I input as a trig source on PFI 4
     - here is the analog input task for which I set the trigger on PFI 6.
    Question is : can I "softwarely" tell the board to route the output counter (Ctr0) to PFI 6? And if yes, how?

    Sorry, no can do on the counters.  The M-series boards would use up both counters for the task of generating a finite pulse train so there'd be no counters left for freq measurement.  From what I've read, the newer X-series boards only use 1 counter for finite pulse trains (and also have 4 total available.) 
       FWIW and for future reference, software routing of signals *will* work though there are some restrictions on which signals can be routed to where.  The M-series boards are generally very flexible though, and you can double check the routing options in MAX.  Also, in general, there's no particular problem running 2 tasks of the type you proposed simultaneously.  Note though that the term "trigger" has a more specific meaning in LabVIEW-land than it may have in normal life.  Here you were using the counter output as an "external sample clock" which is distinct from using it as a trigger.  Triggers initiate tasks, then sample clocks cause samples to be taken during them.
    Anyway, here's a possible workaround which doesn't require you to generate any counter pulses, so you can perform your freq measurement and still have a spare counter left over.
    1. Configure your AI task to use the external 3.9 kHz signal directly as its sample clock.
    2. Also configure your AI task so that the channel list contains at least 10 duplicates of each of your 2 AI channels, along the lines of "ai0,ai0,ai0,...ai1,ai1,ai1,..."   Or you could alternate them back and forth if you want.  You'll have to trade off the importance of the time difference between the two AI channels vs. the risk of the crosstalk-like effect from mux'ing back and forth on each sample.  Myself, I'd probably make a channel list with 12 dupes of ai0 followed by 12 dupes of of ai1 and later ignore the first 2 conversions on each channel just to be more sure the ADC has settled after muxing between them.
    3. Finally configure your AI task to use a specific timing for its "convert" or "channel" clock.  Since the timebase for your AI board is independent of the more accurate external 3.9 kHz clock, you should err on the side of caution.  For example, supposing you were going to take exactly 20 scans within each sample interval, I'd pick a convert clock rate that's a bit higher than the apparent minimum of 20x3.9kHz=78 kHz.  Probably something in the 80-100 kHz realm.

    When I make a Reminder in Outlook on my pc,  would like to see that on my Iphone.   How can I do this ?
