Media manager shifts timecode on long clip copies

We make sub clips from an hour long show daily, then consolidate these sub clips using media manager to be their own master clips. Then we(theoretically) delete the entire hour show and work only with the clips we want. This has been working great for small clips of a few seconds, but we are finding that longer clips (4-5 minutes) have timecode shifts creating nightmares for our finisher.... big shifts of 20 seconds and more.
Has anyone else had this issue?

You are taking a 720x486 clip, and blowing it up to 6 times the size, and trying to retain some semblance of quality...YES the MM will take 16 hours. It takes time to do this. Want to cut this time? Get an HD capture card and capture the footage via the card, upconverting it as you capture. Then the process is real time.
Top end machine or not, you are asking a lot, and it will take time. This isn't a 10 second or 2 minute clip...it is nearly an hour long.

  • Using Media Manager to Cut up Long Media Files

After reading the chapters in the manually quite thouroughly, I still can't make Media Manager to do what I want it to. I need several long media files broken into smaller files, for use in soundtrack pro.
I captured 17 Tapes worth of footage from start to stop, and then logged them and turned individual shots and taks into subclips. After importing each subclip into SoundTack Pro, I realized that it will import the entire original media, and not just the sub clip, thus I decided that I needed to break up all my actual media files, into smaller files. (If there's a way around this, seeing as how working in SoundTrack with an individual Takes audio is my goal, I'd love to hear about it)
So, I tried to use media manager. I set it up with "use existing" media selected, "Delete unsed media from selected clips" selected, "base media files on" set to clip names, and did NOT select duplicate selected clips and place into a new project. I did NOT use handles.
After it was done processing, it did not break the files into individual takes (the way the subclips were made) like I wanted it to. It did break the files down smaller, but it includes multiple takes and multiple shots in each file.
Can someone please point me in the right direction as to what I need to do? Or, if someone can show me a work around for the using subclips in SoundTrack pro (I know this is not the SoundTrack pro Forum) then I would do fine using the clips how they are.
    Thanks for your time.

You really need to go to the Final Cut PRO forum.

  • Media Managing to Prores for 5d clips on mixed timeline

Hi, I have a largish project (1TB footage) whitch is mainly SD but I have some 5d & Sony Ex footage.  The majorety of the timeline is SD but there is a little 5D/Ex whitch is native footage and has to render (it is a SD timeline).  Is there a way of converting the 5D/Ex clips I have used in situe (i.e. not having to convert the clip and redo cut).  I know I could just convert the whole timeline into prores but this is a feature doc and would take a long time and use a lot of disk space.  Also I am not ready to media manage for grading/sound edit (it is still a rough cut).
The reason I ask is I know this can be done with Avid if I consolidate.
    Any ideas?
    Ben

Move the clips you want to convert to their own video track.  Duplicate your sequence, delete the SD footage and media manage what's left.  Then replace the original tracks with the Mediamanaged tracks.

  • Media Manager mangled my slo-mo clips

I used Media Manager for the first time to copy a project and it mangled all of my slo-mo clips. I had several clips that were set at 30% and after I opened the newly created project, all of the slo-mo clips had random speed settings from 90% to 250%.
My project timeline is hosed. What happened?

You might be able to see my ignorance in this but what if I sent the sequence to Color and then rendered out the clips to the other drive. Would that work? There aren't any stills or graphics in the timeline. Just text that I'd be willing to redo anyway.

  • Clip Import and Media Manager

Prior to moving to my MacPro and using Final Cut Pro, I used a PC and Adobe Premiere Pro to capture several reals of tape resulting in over a hundred clips in AVI format. I'd now like to import these clips into FCP to begin actully working on these projects.
However, when I import the clips I get a "Media Warning Message" that tells me the clips are not optmiized for FCP either re-capture the clips (not practical) or use Media Manager to "...create new copies of the files to improve their performance for multi-stream playback."
I've tried to make sense of the documentaton on Media Manager and how it applies to this message but can not quite get a handle on what I'm supposed to do.
So, any help or suggestions would be greatly apprecited. (Fortunately, I only have two project that I have to do this for.)
    Carl

My apologies for the long delay...I finally figured out that when I installed FCS I got QT Pro. Today I tried a conversion of one clip from my old AVI files. So, my next question is the format and process. It looks simple enought: open the AVI clip and then export it. For two clips I used the settings "Movie to Quicktime Movie" and "Most Recent Settings". Is this what I'm supposed tobe doing? And, I again apologize for these very basic questions.
    Thanks,
    Carl

  • Media Manager grabs full capture files

    Hi All,
I'm attempting to archive a finished project comprised of ProRes clips. Typically, I've done this by using Media Manager to copy just the clips used in my timeline, and then backing that data up. However, for some unexplained reason, when I select my timeline in the Browser window and open up Media Manager, there's virtually no difference between the "Original" bar and the "Modified" bar, regardless of whether I check "Delete unused media" or "Include master clips outside the selection". It seems to be trying to include ALL of my source media in this managed version, which is befuddling.
    Any suggestions??
    josh

    Awesome, that would be great.
It's the strangest thing. I have a 3-hour long program feed in DVCPRO HD 1080i60 that was used for b-roll on a project (not the best source, I suppose, but it's all we had), and when I try to media manage it copies the entire master clip, even though that option isn't selected. I'm copying only the footage used, like you mentioned, with 2 second handles, but it still copies the master clip.
I've tried making the clips independent and subclips, I've trashed my preferences, I've copied the sequence into a new project and even brought the original footage into a new project as well, but Media Manager always brings along the master clip.
Does it just not work with files that big?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
    jesse.

  • FCP6 BIG PROBLEM - Media Manager Speed change from FCP5.1.4

    Hi!
We have problem using a media manager project from FCP5.1.4 in FCP6. Almost ALL clips with speed change are messed up (all new speed around 1% to 7%). This is really a problem for us, since we always do media manager of everything we do to be able to go back and make changes.
We have 2 MacPro 2 x 2.66Ghz, 8GB RAM, 10.4.9, Quicktime 7.1.6, FCP6, Decklink HD extreme or AJA Kona LH (with the latest driver).
We tryed with different format: HDTV 1080i50, DVCProHD 720p59.94, SD Uncompressed 10bit, .... always the same problem.
Is there a new way to use the MM in FCP6?
    Thank you!

Hi! And thanx for the tip.
But we use Media Manager everyday with speed change WITHOUT any problem (with FCP 5.1.4).
We already try something similar, we copied the good clips (with speed change) from the ORIGINAL timeline to the media manager one, deleted the bad clip (with the wrong speed change) and pasted the good one in there place. Then we reconnected those clips with the MEDIA MANAGED one. We get a warning that the IN and OUT of the media are not the same, CLICKED continue and everything is always (well 95% of the time) OK.
SO yes, we have the solution, but it's really really long and painful, especially with multilayered sequences.
Right now, when I open any Media Manager in FCP 5.1.4 (created with FCP 5.1.4) everything works fine. Doing the same thing with FCP6 = speed change problem.
Thanks again, still looking for another solution.

  • FCP 6, Media Manager, DualEyes Problem

I've locked picture on a 90 minute feature and I'm trying to export the sequence to an external drive so our colorist can do the grading.
The camera original footage came from various Canon DSLRs. Some of the footage was transcoded (Pro Res 422 HQ) off site and delivered to me. But most of the footage, I transcoded myself, using log and transfer.
I highlight the sequence I want to export in the FCP browser, then right click, but when I click “Media Manager”, nothing happens. The little icon spins for a split second, then nothing.
The same thing happens if I try to open Media Manager from the top menu. Nothing. Won’t open.
Everything in the timeline plays just fine. Exporting the timeline as a self-contained or reference file works without any problem.
It seems Media Manager doesn't like certain clips in the timeline.
I went through the timeline one clip at a time and started to compare the clips MM had a problem with versus those it didn't have a problem with.
It seems the offending clips are all clips that were created in DualEyes, off site, to sync second system audio.
Clips that I synched here, on site, using PluralEyes, do not offend Media Manager.
I don't know that this matters, but...
The offending DualEyes-created files that were created off site include a single, merged file - a video track and three audio tracks (a pair of tracks from the second system audio, and a single track from the camera mic that was used for reference).
One last thing I tried to confirm it was the created-off-site DualEyes files that were keeping MM from working...
I imported two files, residing in the same folder on the HD.
File A had been synched using DualEyes. It has a video track and three audio tracks (one from camera mic, two from second system audio).
File B had not been synched (an MOS take). It has a video track and two audio tracks (camera mic).
I laid both clips in the timeline, next to each other.
If I right click on File A and then click Media Manager, I get an "Error 34" message.
If I right click on File B and then click Media Manager, Media Manager opens normally.
Any idea what's going on here? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    I'm running...
    Final Cut Pro 6.0.6
    2.4GHz 8-Core MacPro
    6 GB RAM
    OSX 10.6.8
    8TB G-Tech esPRO RAID 5 (4.8 TBs used)
    Cheers,
    Jeffrey

I have no idea why this problem is occuring, but you might try deleting the audio from your sequence before doing the media manage.  You could then copy a mixed down track to the media managed sequence if you want audio reference.
Also, select one of the problematic clips and hit command-9 (clip settings) and tell us the settings for the clip.

  • MEDIA MANAGER ISSUE

I am having problems opening the media manager. When I select a sequence nothing happens. When I highlight the clips in the sequence I receive a general error. I am only able to open the manager when I select the captured clips in the browser one at a time or a few clips in a sequence. Is there a way to backup media for an entire project without having to do it a few clips at a time?

I figured it out. I continued to get a general error message when trying to use the media manager on several sequences and clips. When selecting "make sequence clips independant" I was able to use the manager. Go figure

  • Why is Media Manager doing this to me???

    Hi,
I'm trying to get a sequence from DV-PAL to ProRes 422 using media manager but for some reason clips from one tape are being letterboxed in the conversion. It's driving me nuts!
So the original sequence is DV-PAL anamorphic, all clips are DV-PAL with Anamorphic checked. Everything comes through fine except for this one tape. I've created a separate sequence with just one clip from this tape and it always adds a letterbox to it!! If I choose DV-PAL as my destination it's fine but if I choose ProRes or Uncompressed it letterboxes it. I can't see any difference at all between this tape and the others.
    Please help...

Have you tried nesting the sequence before exporting?
also - why not export via compressor?

  • Clips not coming up in Media Manager

I must be missing something... I am backing up a project with Media Manager. I select the desired project's tab. I hit cmd-A. I open MM, it scans for media. When it opens, the summary shows n/a in both Original and Modified. However, if I choose any particular clip or sequence, it shows up in Original and Modified. Also, with other projects, it behaves as expected.
    thanks,

I have a similar problem...but I don't get the first few minutes of video. On my iMac screen, I get that the camera is recognized and blue screen. It tells me onscreen when I am "playing" or "seeking forward" etc., but when I try to "import" though, the "import" button no longer works (it worked 1/2 hour before this). I've plugged and unplugged the firewire cords, turned off the camera, checked the tape, etc. To me, it seems to be a software issue. I just tried it on our Intel Macbook Pro and I have no problem importing the video.
The problem seemed to happen after I imported about 8 minutes of video this morning and then when I stopped it gave me a message I've never seen before (something about "organizing video clips") which like the "letterboxing" message seemed to take forever. Under a time crunch, I attempted to quit iMovie during this organizing process. It didn't happen right away, so I went on to do something else. When I returned, it gave me the options of quitting, saving or canceling. I opted to cancel and continue to import. At that point, however, the import button no longer worked.
I work at a university, so I don't have the install disks myself and wonder if anyone else has had this problem and been able to work around it without reinstalling the software. (I can contact our IT people, but it's a real pain and very time consuming to get them here to reinstall...plus, they are not "Mac people" so they like to give me a lot of c.r.a.p. about how PCs don't have this or that issue...sigh).
    Thanks!

  • Using Media Manager to Decompose offline clips only (Like Avid)

OK... Here's the scenario. I have a Timeline sequence lasting 10 mins. This timeline has been edited direclty from 20 x 1 hour clips from 20 x 1 hour tapes with timecode. I have stored the media on 2 external FW800 drives but one of the drives has failed leaving me with a timeline with half of the clips missing iy's media. The edit is at a pretty final stage and we need to re-dig the media but want to only re-dig that which is missing.
Using Media manager or any other software element is there a way of batch capturing only the short offline (decomposed) clips from the timeline without re-digising the whole of the 10 hours which is missing from the drives. Also., to make things more complicated, this has to be done automatically i.e. without re-editing the clips from the browser back into the timeline.
I would be most grateful for any help on this matter as this is the only thing that seperates Avid Media Composer from FCP as a proper media manager tool.
    Thanks!!!

haven't tried this but it may be worth some investigation.
try exporting an XML of your sequence and passing that to the director
on the director's FCP setup, import the xml, and in the Import XML... window uncheck the "Override with setting from XML" checkbox, and choose the approriate offline res that matches the directors media.
see if the resulting sequence will reconnect

  • Media Manager Trim changes timecode to Drop-frame.

Have a project with footage shot on AJA Kona Ki at 29.97Psf using Apple ProRes 422(HQ).  Timecode base Non-Drop-frame time-of-day timecode.  Editing in CS6.0.2 on Mac OS 10.7.  Trying to trim project using media manager so that only the used media can get color-graded using Filmlight's Baselight.  Once the project is trimmed and new trimmed media is created, we export an EDL from the new sequence and conform in the Baselight.
However it seems Premiere is changing the timecode of the new clips to Drop-frame timecode.  The EDL seems to reflect this and the Baselight can't conform.  We've imported the trimmed media into FCP 7 and confirmed that it sees the new media as Drop-frame timecode.  What the heck?
Can anyone help to replicate this issue and confirm if we're seeing what we're seeing.  Think it is a huge bug of some kind.  If I can get someone to help confim, I'll submit a bug report.
While on the topic of drop-frame.  Premiere also seems to think is needs to compensate for DF code when you import a sequence from a Premiere project straight into Adobe Media Encoder.  For instance a sequence that is set to start at 01:00:00:00 imports into AME with starting timecode of 01:00:03:15.  Or at least it's always 3:15 off from whatever timecode the sequence is set to start at.  That sounds like the offset needed to compensate for the difference between NDF and DF code.  This makes bringing one sequence in and setting in and outs while in AME a very big pain.  Such as a sequence with 10-30sec spots starting at the even minute.  Can anyone help to confirm this issue as well?

  • Media Manager not deleting unused media from HDV (intermediate codec) clips

I have a project which uses HDV footage which I captured using the Apple Intermediate Codec. I now have a bunch of clips that are very large in file size so I'd like to use the Media Manager to delete all the unused footage from the clips. I have tried countless different selections of sequences, clips in the browser, clips in a timeline etc but can't seem to get the Media Manager to show a smaller file size for the processed files based on 'Use Existing' with 'Delete unused media' option. The two size meters at the top always stay the same. Can the media manager trim HDV/Apple Intermediate Codec footage? If not is there a way to get rid of the footage that I haven't used? Thanks!
    Ben

I've never mastered MM. If I want a small section out of larger clip, I simply just export that section of the clip using 'current settings'.
Hope someone who has tamed the MM beast will step in here and offer you a better way...
    good luck.
