Memory and Spinning Beachballs of Death (SBD's)
I'm not sure if this is the right place to put this question, but here goes. For a while now I've been encountering intermittent SBD's. It happens with multiple applications, so I'm having trouble narrowing down exactly what the issue is. One thing I tried was having my Activity Monitor set in my Dock so I could monitor Memory Usage, but I'm not sure how to understand the graph. I've got over a gig of RAM, yet the Monitor consistently shows only 91.47 MB or so of my Wired Memory being used and 4.91 GB of Virtual Memory. VM is slower than WM, right? Do I need to install more memory? How can I tell? Just trying to figure things out. Thanks!
You can tell better by looking at the pageouts in Activity Monitor.
You can tell how many swap files by going to the finder and using the Go To (command + shift + g)
/private/
then look for /vm directory
1GB is not a lot. In fact, the 'sweet spot' for G5s is more like 1.5GB - for "lite" use apps.
OS X will try to use all of your RAM for caching to improve performance. you should not be concerned with it being used, it would be worse if it sat unused, and 'going to waste.'
the Virtual Memory you see is just an address space, "allocated" but not used.
You should though be concerned with free space, accumulation of cache files (Safari and Camino can eat up 100MB and more).
Get yourself into doing daily backups; run Disk Warrior before and after; and do a backup-erase-restore from time to time. And generally keep it maintained.
Corrupt prefs? Disk Warrior and TechTool Pro, and Applejack
Bad RAM? Memtest and Rember
corrupt directory? Disk Warrior

IMac i7 Freeze and spinning ball of death
Hiya
My iMac i7 froze me out this morning while I was using a USB memory stick.
The window went all corrupted looking and the spinning ball of death appeared.
How do you restart with a wireless keyboard and mouse, when nothing is clickable. (other than turning the power off) ? :-/Press and hold the power button until it turns off, then start it again.

Daniel1.> Great, that's not the problem then.
2.> I thought all G5s came with an AHT CD, but maybe not, insert your Install DVD & then go to the startup disk Pref Pane and see if Hardware test is an Option.
3.> Welll, pick just one Application, say Console>Logs>/Library/Logs>Crash Reporter>Safari Crash.log, see if something like this shoews...

i hate to drive on Unix code. Apple expect to make that easily friendly use .
The Simple Apple way would be to do an Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.
Then perhaps reinstalling other APPs if needed. -
Recovery with InDesign6 and spinning ball of death
This morning the power went out while I had been working in InDesign and Illustrator.
I came in and saved the project before the back up power went out but did not get the Mac powered off completely before the back up power stopped. When the power came back on, I restarted the mac and Indesign, and my project is now constantly getting the spinning ball of death; I can't even open the file even though it says it was saved. ALL other programs are fine. Just problems with indesign.
I have reset the SMC and did a disc check on the hard drive and the disc utility said everything was fine.
PLEASE HELP! I am freaking out about my project!!
Thanks.No. Placing pages will not help.
Try exporting a file that will open to .idml (see Remove minor corruption by exporting). I suspect, though that tehre may be program damage from the crash. Have you verified that you can create a new file and add pages?
If the .idml doesn't work, the next thing to try, if the new file is editable, is to creat a new file the same size as the one with a problem, then rename Master A to something you are not using in the problem file. Open the Paragraph Styles panel and from the flyout menu choose Load Paragraph Styles and choose the problem file as the source. Import the Basic Paragraph style and tell ID to use the incoming style.
Next, go back to the problem file and select all the pages in the Pages panel and opent the panel flyout menu. Choose Move Pages... and for the target pick your new file. Put the pages BEFORE page 1 so they don't switch sides.
In the new file, delet the last page which is now an extra, and see how it works. -
FCPX and spinning ball of death
Ever since I "up" graded to Mavericks, FCPX has struggled, my whole computer slowed down drastically so much that I had to take it
to the genius bar. Five "geniuses" tried to figure out what was wrong for SIX HOURS!
Continually assuring me this was not usual. Yeah, right. Across the internet the spinning ball of death with FCPX and Mavericks is pretty well known.
The only solution they offered was to wipe my drive. After six hours and NO other solutions, I conceded to the murder of my computer, backing it up, of course.
FCPX seemed to work temporarily after that, but as soon I got into serious editing it went right back to taunting me with endless rainbow balls spiraling whenever I needed to simply look at a clip! Or event!
It worked FINE before Mavericks!!!!!!!
I regret the upgrade...
I hope you fix this because jobs are on the line here.... And sleep is necessary for an editor to do her job.Could not agree more. Trying to prepare DVDs of dance student evidence for assessment of final grades. Needing to select material from various clips all in same event to illustrate key points for each student (a perfectly reasonable editing task). ALL clips have been optimised and all copied into the library. Almost every time I need to preview a new clip (i.e. skim from one clip into another) I get the beach ball and have to wait minutes.
I tried raising this as a bug (I am a developer) and got brushed off with the "not enough information" reply, because I cannot find any of these problems reported in the system logs.
Everything was working really, really well before Mavericks and 10.1 - I think someone re-wrote things for the new MacPro but broke it for iMac users. Not a good way of persuading me to buy a Mac Pro, by the way. -
Mac App Store and spinning ball of death!
When I try to purchase an app on Mac App Store, i get the "Spinning ball" for ever.
I have to Force quit the Mac App Store application.
I can sign in on Mac App Store, browse the applications but unable to buy or download anything.
All is fine using iTunes to buy an application or download a free app.
Here is a console log of the problem showing an error when trying to download from Mac App Store

Thank you for your helpI finally got it to work.
My problem was Spotlight !!!!!!!!
I disabled a while ago Spotlight upon an advice that when you use Logic Pro on a professional basis like I do, it was better to turn off Spotlight. To do so I used Spotless.
I turn it back on and gone was my problem not being able to download anything from Mac App Store.
Hope this work for others. -
System Preferences and spinning beachballs
I have noticed that system preferences is getting slower and slower
I have Yosemite on an 2011 Mac book pro
I get a spinning beachball for a good minute before an item loads, and sometimes it cannot even be loaded
I also got a spinning beachball both on Mavericks and after a new install of Yosemite , not just with System Preferences, but quite a lot generally and have had the macbook at a genius specialist who thought a fresh install would solve that and the issue of there only being about 2 per cent ram available.
I only ever have a couple of applications open at any one time, e.g. Notes and Evernote
I am wondering whether these issues might be related to an installation of Word for Mac....don't know if anyone else suspects microsofot software as an issue......
I use Pages normally and Word for Mac occasionally, but it keeps crashing and creating error reports and recovered documents (as Microsoft always does - this is why i bought a Mac ).
Thanks for any ideas

Spinning wheel of death while using photoshop, chrome and spotify
I have a fairly new MacBook Pro which – on a bad day – keeps showing me 5x a day the spinning wheel of death for about 15 min, then it catches up again. the programms which are mostly unresponsive are photoshop, Chrome, spotify, skype.
I tried lots of possible solutions mentioned in the forum but none of them really helped. Does anybody have an idea what could cause the trouble?
those are the data of my mac according to etrecheck:

I am having exactly the same issue (same programs too, but mainly Chrome and Spotify).
Glad to hear your issue was fixed..... I don't use Sophos so I'm guessing I'm going to have to troubleshoot my machine.
I may just try posting what you did to see if I get a response ...
Could you tell me how / where you actually got all of that data on your MBP so I can do the same for mine?
Thanks!

What is the cause of the Spinning Wheel of Death (SWOD) and how can we fix it?
What is the cause of the Spinning Wheel of Death (SWOD) and how can we fix it?
I get the SWOD using Safari, Mail, Google chrome, Firefox, Mathematica, and other programs. This cannot be a browser plug-in issues as other forums suggest. I suspect a windows process at the root but I don't enough to know how to trace. Does anyone know what's causeing this epidemic?I'm having a similar problem. Someone PLEASE HELP!
I'll start with just an example of what I've been facing. During the composing of this post, when I switched from Firefox to Word, I had to wait 60 seconds before the spinning wheel stopped and I got a cursor. I then copied one set of Etrecheck results, switched back to Firefox, hit Command-v to paste and had to wait 45 seconds or so for the spinning wheel to stop. And the paste operation didn't paste until I hit Command-v again (with no wait this time).
Here's what I've done:
I tried three times to run a scan with avast! and all three times the scan was unable to complete.
I restarted holding down Command-r and it found and fixed many permissions, but found no problems with files.
I ran Etrecheck in a "Safe Boot" and in a normal startup and there were two things that were tagged as "[failed]" in the normal startup:

Fresh Install of Yosemite and still spinning beachballs...
Hey all, I've been having this spinning beachball issue for a long time now and it's really annoying. I just did a fresh install of Yosemite. My Mac Mini downloaded Yosemite from the Apple servers. I just turned on my Mac Mini to test it out and the spinning beachballs are back...
There must be a way I can fix this without erasing the whole drive and installing each app one at a time...
Could someone please help me?
Thanks for any help! Here it is:

Spinning Cursor of Death on all actions and apps
I now have the spinning cursor of death on all apps all finder actions in snow leopard
over last 3 months, OS periodically dumped bluetooth, resetting the Sys management controller fixed this, also zapped the pram twice in this time. in the last 10 days had to do this every 5 days.
All actions are extremely slow, spinning ball cursor on all apps and icons bouncing in dock for long time, all apps slow in operation, the command F is also very slow, if backing up to usb drive doing any other tasks is almost impossible
1. booted from external HD (Backup'd with Chronosync) drive and ran disk utility to repair permissions 3 times. Although it states the permissions are repaired on the 3rd time it was a repeat of the first. So it appears it is not repairing the permissions at all
2. reset system management controller
3. zapped pram
account - admin ( only used for installing apps). My user ac and a 2nd user account set up for family visitors. This ac hadn't been opened for 9 months and I found couldn't log in - froze twice forced restart - also to log out and login to any other ac took 3 min, normal 15 secs. Deleted the family ac and login returned to normal on other ac's
4. booted from installer disk and ran disk repair, aok, and then permissions repair twice.
5. booted from installer disk 2 and ran apple hardware test aok
Been thru the apps folder and deleted any app no longer required and deleted prefs from the prefs folder as well as well an any other orphan files.
appeared to be working ok until boot next day same problems, re-booted in safe mode and tried using firefox and then opening excel, same problem, deleted firefox and all accompanying files. Rebooted and problem worse than ever. OS is unusable. Currently working from chronosync bootable HD from last bootable backup 12 days ago. ( files backed up daily)
I would like to avoid erasing the HD and clean instal if possible I have 400 GB of data - The latest updates are installed on everything
Any help as to what to do next would be appreciated

Sounds like malware, boot drive failing, bad sectors or OS x is messed up.

Apple changed some things under the hood, so it's going to show certain Disk Uitlity permisisons fixes over and over, that you can ignore.
2. reset system management controller
3. zapped pram
not applicable in your case, but it doesn't hurt.

Well copy that 400GB of User Data to another drive, as to fix your issue may require a erase and install to fix the bad sectors issue.
Run through this list of fixes, wipe and install is last and if that still gives you problems then it's a bad drive.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
This will fix the bad sector issue if you just want to jump and do that.

I also suspect because your using Chronosych, that it's not doing something right and/or OS X is getting confused with the two boot drives.
Once your fixed up, use Carbon Copy Cloner instead and make sure to name the clone something differnet.

One morning a week ago I got the "White Screen Of Death" and my desktop imac wouldn't load so mac support told me I had to erase my history and upload imac again. We went through every senario to get it to work to no avai. I had a snow leopard disc so I uploaded that as well. In the last few days I click on my mouse and I get the "Spinning Ball Of Death" most every time I click. It lasts for about 5 - 20 seconds every time. I am not a "techie" at all. Is there any way to stop this. I am not sure what could be causing this. I erased my browers cache on Safari and that didn't help. I also turned the comp. off then back on and that didn't work either. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Step by step how to's? I am not totally ignorant in computer speak but not an expert by any means. Thanks!
Greetings,
What do you mean by "events to update"? Do you mean invites to new events or changes to existing invites?
Troubleshooting:
1. Your profile indicates you are running 10.6.7, 10.6.8 is the current version Apple > Software update.
2. First make an iCal backup: Click on each calendar on the left hand side of iCal 1 at a time highlighting it's name and then going to File Export > Export and saving the resulting calendar file to a logical location for safekeeping.
3. Remove the following to the trash and restart your computer:
Home > Library > Caches > com.apple.ical
Home > Library > Calendars > Calendar Cache, Cache, Cache 1, 2, 3, etc. (Do not remove Sync Cache or Theme Cache if present)
Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.ical (There may be more than one of these. Remove them all.)
---NOTE: Removing these files may remove any shared (CalDAV) calendars you may have access to. You will have to re-add those calendars to iCal > Preferences > Accounts.
3. Launch iCal and test.
Hope that helps! -
I use Preview to edit photos, and would like to know if there are any updates to this program in the works. It seems Apple is constantly updating its software, except for Preview. I find it crashes all too often, and also takes forever to "catch up" with me (as in spinning beachball of death) when I'm editing a lrge amount of photos. Yes, I know I should be using Photoshop or somesuch, but it's just too **** confusing, and I don't have the time to figure it out. Thanks!!
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful. -
Somebody help me My Mac is lagging big and whenever I click on something it just goes to the spinning wheel of death I can't do anything I need help
What model year Mac and what version of OS X are you running.
If this is on an older Mac with standard Rotating HDD it could be a sign the HDD is either to full of data or it is starting to fail. It could also be caused by 3rd party software you've installed. -
i have a brand new macbook pro that i was doing a data transfer via firewire from an old macbook, it got stopped/cable pulled out, now have spinning wheel of death that wont stop, how do i reboot/stop the wheel of death and start again? (this time il use time machine transfer)
Just power off the machine(s). Shut them down. Migration Assistant gets 'stuck' sometimes - best way to migrate really isn't over Firewire, though it will certainly work, but with both machines hardwired via Ethernet to the same router. You can use a TM backup, too, of course, provided that it's recent. Which is the best? Your choice. I've done it both ways and have a preference for MA, but TM restore can be a bit faster and less quarrelsome.
