Message sort order

I want to change the default message sort order so messages are listed by most recent first, instead of oldest first in the mailbox.
I've been reading about modifying the message list here:
http://docs.sun.com/source/816-6010-10/uicst.htm#13511
and just want to confirm that if I modify the meSortOrder variable in the main.js file, will that change the default message list for all existing mailboxes displayed in webmail?
Also, does anyone know for sure whether the variable to list the newest messages first is meSortOrder=last or meSortOrder=L ???
My system specs:
iPlanet Messaging Server 5.1 Patch 1 (built Jun 6 2002)
libimta.so 5.1 Patch 1 (built 06:07:28, Jun 6 2002)
HP-UX wwcc B.11.00 A 9000/879 674411361 two-user license
Thank you - Forrest

Yes, thank you Jay - and I am working towards that now - in part due to the information you shared.
But the question I am faced with will remain, can I change the default webmail message display from "oldest first" to "oldest last" on the system level. And at this time, I'm not sure if a newer version will change that default.
So, from what I've read, in part from this Messenger Express customization guide:
http://docs-pdf.sun.com/816-5986-10/816-5986-10.pdf
you need to change the SortOrder variable to 'last' in the main.js.
From my tests, this does not work. There seem to be preset variables options, and 'last' is not one of them. However, there are two more variables that look like they could affect this change: 'sorting' and 'orgSort'. Does anyone know how to change this setting to have the newest messages displayed first?
Thank you,
Forrest

    When i iMessage from my iPhone and return to my mac, i often find that the newer messages in a given conversation are shown above te older one! this is weird. this happens all the time with atleast one contact. whats going on?

    Hi,
    This issue seems to have existed since iMessages Beta in Lion.
    Mostly it effects the synced messages that arrive on the Mac after you have been using another device to have the conversation.
    In the document about the OS X 10.8.4 update Apple suggested they had "fixed" one cause of the issue.
    However the app itself did not receive an update suggesting the change was to the support side of things.
    The messages that are synced do not appear to use the Time Stamps of the iMessages when they were sent (and shown in the conversations) but these do not seem to arrive from the iMessages servers in the same order.
    It is also clear that fresh iMessages arrive Instantly and therefore out of order if the sync is still catching up.

  • Mail Message list sort order for Applescript in ML

    Hi All,
    I recently upgraded from SL to ML. I'm having a few issues with an applescript i use to flag/unflag emails for later handling.
    Basically, the script does the following:
    - get the message list from one of the inboxes/smartboxes. These are ordered by time and grouped by thread.
    - compare one message with the next one
    - if some criterias are equal (thread ID, subject, ...) then the second email is unflagged
    - repeat until end of list.
    It was working fine in SL, as a result, i only had the first email of threads with a flag, so the others could be forgotten.
    In ML, it looks like even though the emails are displayed in a specific order (date/thread), using
    messages of first message viewer
    does not fetch the messages in the same order, so matching cannot happen.
    Is this the expected behavior in ML ? Is there anyway to have the list of messaged sorted as displayed ?
    Thanks
    jm

    I found a workaround, though there must be something neater.
    I added this before my script
    tell application "System Events"
              tell process "Mail"
                        tell menu bar 1
                                  tell menu bar item "View"
                                            tell menu "View"
                                                      tell menu item "Sort By"
                                                                tell menu "Sort By"
                                                                          click menu item "Subject"
                                                                end tell
                                                      end tell
                                            end tell
                                  end tell
                        end tell
              end tell
    end tell
    then the same except "Date" instead of "Subject".
    My script does what i want now.

  • Any way to Restore Last Manual Sort Order or Prevent from being Overwritten accidentally?

         Help!
         I'm constantly accidentally overwriting painstakingly created manual sort ordering (sometimes hours but more often months of accumulated work) in folders with files numbering up to 1,000, when i, however breifly, switch to another sort ordering (size, date modified etc) to check something, immediately forget that i'm in another sort order, and, unthinkingly (actually i guess i'm thinking of a lot of other things) drag a file to another position, this immediately destroys any past manual sorting i've established, overwriting it with this new inadvertent manual ordering.
         I've tried CommandZ (edit undo) but that only undoes my last rating or labeling, i've rushed to force quit Bridge through the activity montior hoping i will catch it before its overwritten, but obviously i am not as fast as a computer, and i don't think this has ever worked.
    Is there any way or any script someone has written to formally save a manual sort order? Is there anything i've missed to attempt restoring it? Has anyone, repeatedly foiled by this, written something that would give a warning and require confirmation say for instance, if i tried to drag or move a file while in another sort ordering (this seems like something that should have existed the minute the opportunity was given to create manual organization). Would anyone be willing to?
         Seriously, me forgetting almost every time isn't going to change and, more vexingly, it's even happened when i didn't mean to move anything but fumbled momentarily while in another sort order. I think most people might forget because (in the context of computing) we are conditioned to expect a warning if something we have just created is about to be written over or discarded, and since there is no option to formally save a manual ordering we have just created.
         Also, if this was in the real world, moving a single file would not reshuffle everything on your desk. If i had the option to formally save a manual organization i would NOT forget to do this and would use it, as i've wished for one every time spent a while rearranging files. Knowing how easily all the hours (much less months and years of cumulative work) of organizational work can be accidentally lost makes working within Bridge unpleasantly anxious.
          I'm literally willing to do anything including installing some sketchy 3rd-part scripts (though honestly i have no idea what that means or how to do it). I extentively use and rely heavily upon this function so this is a fairly serious Achille's heel. It's like watching your incredibly important meticulously constructed house of cards collapse with a careless but innocent sigh, or like having the equivelent of a not even charming cat dance across your keyboard during a live concert, etc etc....
         Also it is not usually appropriate, given the context, to batch rename everything to preserve a manual ordering w sequence numbers, etc. Often the filenames are considerably (but necessarily, to connote important differences) long already, and when i have to rearrange things in the future would have to do that each time, etc, etc, making for even more unwieldly filenames that didn't have any substantive information at the beginning. I'm looking for a way to make this function (manual sort ordering), well, more functional, secure and stable, the workarounds i've considered cause too many additonal problems.
         Thank you in advance for any help you may be able to offer, and as this is my first attempt to use the forums as i live on a boat with no regular net access, would appreciate any forum etiquette corrections, and advance apologies for any misspellings, dyslexic and spellcheck does not seem to work in this interface. next time will edit in external wordprocessing program beforehand,
              li'l mc szpf
         PS i'm on a 27" mac w CS4 Design Premium, w up to the minute OS (10.6.8) and Adobe software updates installed recently (i do not often move the monster but this week was housesitting w net access, so she has had all recommended shots and vaccinations....)
         PPS I know most of y'all might be running the newest and the latest of everything, but, i'm fairly certain this is still a problem in recent versions as this has happened to me at school where all the macs are running cs5. Though if it's been addressed somehow in cs6 would update entire suite just to fix this one problem in Bridge. I've tried many searches and found nothing relevant or wouldn't bother the considerable expertise and resources of an official forum, was extremely hesitant to ask (feared getting snapped at for unwittingly broaching forum etiquette) but it is truly the bane of my considerable Bridge existence, so was willing to risk the imaginary censure and opprobrium....

    That is a good question, to do this requires two functions and a restart of Bridge all done automagically
    Copy and paste the script into ExtendScript Toolkit
    This gets installed with Photoshop and can be found:-
    PC: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Utilities
    MAC: <hard drive>/Applications/Utilities/Adobe Utilities
    Start Bridge
    PC: Edit - Preferences - Startup Scripts
    Mac: Adobe Bridge menu - Preferences - Startup Scripts
    At the bottom click the "Reveal Button" this will open the folder where the script should be saved.
    Close and restart Bridge.
    Accept the new script.
    To use:
    Tools - Backup Manual Sort
    This will backup the hidden manual sort file .BridgeSort to .BridgeSortSave
    Tools - Restore Manual Sort
    This will copy the .BridgeSortSave back to .BridgeSort and will close and restart Bridge so that the manual sort is restored.
    if( BridgeTalk.appName == "bridge" ) {
    var backUpManSort = new MenuElement( "command","Backup Manual Sort", "at the end of Tools" , "backupms" );
    var RestoreManSort = new MenuElement( "command","Restore Manual Sort", "at the end of Tools" , "restorems" );
    backUpManSort.onSelect = function () {
    var fileSort = new File(app.document.presentationPath +"/.BridgeSort");
    var fileSave = new File(app.document.presentationPath +"/.BridgeSortSave");
    if(fileSave.exists) fileSave.remove();
    fileSort.copy(fileSave);
    fileSave.hidden=true;
    RestoreManSort.onSelect = function () {
    var fileSort = new File(app.document.presentationPath +"/.BridgeSort");
    var fileSave = new File(app.document.presentationPath +"/.BridgeSortSave");
    if(!fileSave.exists){
    alert("No backup file exists");
    return;
    app.document.sorts = [{ type:"string",name:"document-kind", reverse:false }];
    if(fileSort.exists) fileSort.remove();
    fileSave.copy(fileSort);
    fileSort.hidden=true;
    app.document.chooseMenuItem("mondo/command/new");
    app.documents[0].close();
    app.document.sorts = [{ name:"user",type:"date", reverse:false }];
    Hope this works for you.

  • Photoshop CS3 web gallery bugs(?); vanishing metadata, bad sort order

    Running OS 1.5.4 on 24" Imac, I'm attempting to generate a "horizontal slideshow" from bridge-selected files in Photoshop CS3.
    [Sounded like the problem in this post: http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b5a9fe/2 but on re-reading I've decided it's different so I'm giving it it's own thread, with more detail...]
    Here's my experience:
    1) Description and title show up for a second on the first slide, then revert to just the blank template on that and all subsequent slides (title: [blank] description: [blank]....
    Hitting "refresh" produces the descriptive metadata for a tantalizing moment, then it' s back to the blank template for this and all subsequent slides. It does this both for Safari and Firefox.
    You can view this behavior in a slideshow at http://oasisdesign.net/projects/earthtoilet/
    If it asks for a password, use---
    user:earthling
    pass: draf1 )
    "preserve all metadata" is checked.
    I've tried all combinations of checking/ unchecking "title, description, filename" for labeling...also, making slideshows with just one or two slides to reduce the chance that it's a weird character issue of the type some other folks have experienced...
    2) additionally, the web gallery is not respecting the manual sort order in Bridge, which is the source of the files. The help files say the slideshow should follow the manual sort order in Bridge.
    3) Finally, metadata entered in bridge metadata tab sometimes vanishes, sometimes metadata entered in file info wouldn't show in the metadata tab.
    Thanks for your help!!
    Art
    BTW, here's the related issues I found:
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b5a9fe/2
    ...After some investigation, I found that the descriptions were disappearing only for photos that had a Return / Line Break in the description. If you go back and make sure all of your descriptions are a single line, it works fine....
    =Don't have line breaks, nor "and" nor &...
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3bff9de1/0
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3bd62ec3/0

    OK...here's the hack I used to get around what I'm now totally convinced are program bugs and shortcomings relative to advertised functionality, for anyone else who has to deal with this, followed by my (suggested fixes to Adobe)...
    1) Sort everything the way you want in bridge.
    2) Make meta descriptions w/o weird characters (a warning here would be helpful)
    3) Use "batch rename," with "copy to another folder" to give the images totally plain vanilla, DOS-style file names (001.jpg, 002.jpg...). This solves most filename issues and the works around web gallery's failure to recognize bridge sort order in one go. Note that you can irrevocably screw up the names of all your original files if you're not very careful to COPY at this step.
    ([a] make the bridge sort work directly, as advertised, por favor. [b] add an error message or warning about file names such as 006-(2).jpg causing malfunction. A compassionate, low-effort short-term patch for Mac users of web gallery, especially since bridge generates that particular sort name itself invisibly and automatically if you move a file with the same name into a folder)
    4) Use "white on black" instead of bug-ridden "horizontal slideshow" (horizontal slideshow should be fixed or deleted from the next version...multiple slideshow options would be awesome, as they advance automatically at the max rate the user's bandwidth allows, a very attractive feature)
    5) Restrict all images to the same height so users can click *in the same spot* to advance the 200 images with less carpal tunnel (the advance arrow should *always* be in the same spot, for every web gallery, IMHO)
    Web galleries are a fantastic tool for sharing information easily...I hope to see some evolution in those great automatic updates someday...

  • Itunes sort order different in playlist

    I'm having a weird sort order problem... in one playlist - I have the column "album" sorted. The songs names (under "name") for one album sort just fine - the names are "ep 1", "ep 2", "ep 3", etc. and appear in that order.
    However, if I click that album column to sort by "album by artist" - the song order changes. now they are seemingly random (although I imagine there has to be a reason behind the order).
    The sort order of those songs is even different *in another playlist* - ie, they are not even in the same "random" order they show in when I sort them by "album by artist" in the other playlist above. They're in a "different random" order.
    Any ideas?
    Message was edited by: AppleJason

    That's helpful for my issues with iPhone, which are yet another variation on what I'm talking about - but in going through the article, I couldn't find anything that pointed to why my "name" column is not sorting properly for the same artist album.
    Selecting all the songs in that album, get info --> shows the artist, album artist and album names (both album artist and artist are exactly the same) - so my point is there are not some kind hidden character problem - or they wouldn't match and therefore the fields would be blank.
    If the "album by artist" is the primary sort, what does itunes use for the secondary column to sort? This should help me answer the problem.... it sure doesn't look like "name" column is used as 2nd... because it's not sorted!

  • Sort order in an interactive report

    In APEX 4.1 I am trying to create an interactive report based on a table that's similar to the following:
    id - number
    colA - varchar2
    colB - varchar2
    colC - date
    colD - varchar2
    In the IR, I'd like to have break on column A so that the report displays as follows:
    colA
    id, colb, colB, colC, colD
    I want the sort order for column A to be based on the ID column, but I find that APEX displays it in alpha order based on the value for column A. I could include the value for ID in the break, but since it only has meaning inside the database, it leads to confusion among the users. I read some other posts where people have included the ID field and then used javascript to hide it in the report. I was wondering if there might be an alternative solution.

    AT USER-COMMAND.
    CASE SY-UCOMM.
    WHEN 'BACK'.
    IF SY-LSIND = 5.
    SY-LSIND = 1.

  • Sort order of documents in a collaboration  room

    hi everybody
    i have a collaboration room where documents are stored in it. the sort order of my folders in the collaboration room is determined by the names of the folders.
    now there are many folders in folders and at the bottom-level-folder there are the documents stored. these documents are sorted by the names of the documents too.
    now my problem:
    the sorting of the folders by name is OK, but at the bottom-level in the bottom-level-folder i need the documents sorted by "modified"-date (for all users). How can i easy made this change? (hope not to make a new layout set...:-() can you please post a guidance?
    thank you for your help!
    flo

    thank you for your feedbacks...
    the suggested solutions are not bad but i have this problem:
    in the collaboration room we use two layout sets, one for the users with write-permission (layout set FileExplorer) and one for the users with read-permissions (layout set AnonymExplorer).
    in the collaboration room the folder-structure for documents should be sorted by folder-name but in the bottom-level-folders, the documents should be sortet by modified-date.
    now the problem is, that i can assign only one layout set to a folder, that would mean, that the users with the read- and write-permissions both would have the same view...
    do you see another solution?
    please help!

  • Sort order of Imessages and SMS

    In previous IOS versions, when you deleted a Imessage or an SMS, the sort order of message automatically changed to last date. In IOS 8.1 the sort order
    doesn´t do this, which means that if you delete a message send today and the one before that was sent yesterday, the message is not moved "down" my list and counted as from yesterday it still stays as if it was sent today.
    Could you please fix this.
    Thx (Apple 6 User)

    The issue isn't really the T in The Beach Boys. The issue is the inconsistency between the sort in Finder, the playlist sort in the side bar, and the sort within Music.
    1) If you make a smart playlist The Beach Boys, it will be sorted in the side bar under T, not under B.
    2) If you make a smart playlist 409 (containing The Beach Boys' song 409), it will be sorted at the top before the letter A. In Music, it will be at the bottom, after the letter Z.
    While this behavior may be of long standing, it is still inconsistent. I think we should be given an option as to how we want to sort numbers and punctuation marks. I assume that the american english sort order is not imposed on other language versions of iTunes. It shouldn't be difficult to allow the sort to match the locale of the computer, so that iTunes sorts match Finder sorts.
    P.S. Most of my files are wave files from old records and tapes. I chose to name The Beach Boys The Beach Boys and The Beatles Beatles, i.e., I chose to put one under T and one under B. Only The Band, The Beach Boys, The Who, and The Soul Stirrers were worthy of the extra The, to be sorted under the T's where I wanted them to be (sorry Beatles).

  • AQ Sort Order

    HI
    I am trying to subscribe to a topic with Sort Order (priority,enq_time) using oracle.jms API.Payload type is an ADT generated from jpublisher.Though the same worked with Oracle.AQ API.
    1)After publishing i am updating the priority through sql using payload data.But the subscribing application is always taking enq_time when actually it should be taking priority as first criteria.It is still taking default priority as 1 for all so sorting by enqueue time i feel.
    2)If on the other hand i set different priorities while publishing throgh client itself,subscibing application is picking up correctly .i.e priority first the enq_time.
    Sample code:
    ===========
    // Get topic object
    Topic topic = ((AQjmsSession) aq.session).getTopic(
    DB_AQ_ADMIN_NAME, // Queue owner
    "message_queue"); // Queue name
    // Create topic receiver
    TopicReceiver subscriber = ((AQjmsSession) aq.session).createTopicReceiver
    topic, // Used topic
    "SUBSCRIPTION" + _subscriptionId, // Name and identification of the subscription
    null,// No message selector

    // Receive message
    System.out.println("Waiting 60 seconds to receive message for subscription SUBSCRIPTION" + _subscriptionId + " ...");
    AQjmsAdtMessage adtMessage = (AQjmsAdtMessage) subscriber.receive(60000);
    if(adtMessage != null)
    QUEUE_MESSAGE_CAFU messageData = (QUEUE_MESSAGE_CAFU) adtMessage.getAdtPayload();
    System.out.println("receive() successfully");
    // Print message
    System.out.println("ProductId : " + messageData.getProductId());
    System.out.println("StoreId : " + messageData.getStoreId());
    System.out.println("ProductName: " + messageData.getProductName());
    System.out.println("country : " + messageData.getCountry());
    Note:QUEUE_MESSAGE_CAFU is JPublisher generated class from an oracle object type
    Regards
    Raju

    Answers from Oracle for anyone interested:
    1. Is there any way to determine the enqueue order of a set of messages?
    Enqtime is only to the second.
    (**) Yes the enqueue order is enqtime + step_no. So if you concat it appropriately you will get the right >order.
    2. If using a queuebrowser starting at a message ID, will messages appear in
    actual order even if msgids are not in order?
    (**) The message will appear in the enqueue time order.
    3. Is there any way, preferably a sql query, to determine the messageID of
    the last message enqueued to an AQ?
    You could write a query which would compute the max(enqueue_time + step_no) say something like:
    select msgid from queue_table where expr(enqtime, stepno) = (select max(expr(enqtime, stepno)) from >queue_table); This is true but Oracle forgot to say that the order is guaranted only if the messages are enqueued in the same session!! if the messages are enqueued by different sessions the result is unpredictable (the enqueue time is OK but the step_no is completly wrong, that is we can have different message at the same time with the same step_no)

    Hello,
    It's been quit a while since we mailed and I promised to get back on you.
    I've been testing and I'm lost. It looks likes the messages are at random dequeued.
    A user have enqueued different messages.
    The enqueue code is :
    -- Add new request to queue.
    message_properties.delay := pkg_delay_time;
    message_properties.priority := p_priority;
    message_properties.expiration := pkg_expire_time;
    message := proj_batch_queue_ot( p_projectid
    , p_versionno                , p_action
    , p_job_type
    dbms_aq.enqueue( queue_name => pkg_schema||'.'||g_queue_name
    , enqueue_options => enqueue_options
    , message_properties => message_properties
    , payload => message
    , msgid => message_handle
    It is an autonomous_transaction and is commited immediatly.
    The dequeue code is:
    declare
    dequeue_options dbms_aq.dequeue_options_t;
    message_handle raw(16);
    begin
    dequeue_options.navigation := dbms_aq.first_message;
    dequeue_options.dequeue_mode := dbms_aq.browse;
    dequeue_options.wait := dbms_aq.no_wait;
    dbms_aq.dequeue (queue_name => pkg_schema||'.'||g_queue_name,
    dequeue_options => dequeue_options,
    message_properties => message_properties,
    payload => message,
    msgid => message_handle
    The sort_order is priority, enq_time and still the messages are dequeued at random.
    I hope you can help me.
    I would be most grateful.
    Regards

  • How to Control Sort Order of Playlists in iTunes?

    As far as I can tell, somewhere along the way iTunes stopped sorting playlists alphabetically, numbers before letters, and started sorting playlists alphabetically, letters before numbers. Or at least that's how it now happens on my iPhone; I think the change happened with the iPhone 3.0 OS update.
    Has anyone found a better way to set a sort order than by putting "AA" and "AAA" in front of the playlists they want to have at the top of the list? Because that's an awfully inelegant solution -- to my mind, if you have to use a prefix at all, using 01, 02 et cetera was a far better way of doing things. Is there a setting I can tick to go back to the old way? Or, better still, a way to set that sort order arbitrarily, independent of the playlists' names?
    Message was edited by: Andrew Willett

    If you label your favorite/priority playlists as A1, A2, A3...B1, B2, B3
    Then they will sort the way you want (except on the iPod Classic which seems to have it's own sorting).

  • Sort order on reports

    I've encountered a number of report views where the sorting is obviously flawed. For example if I run the Modification Date Age Report, choose the Age Criteria of Month and Year, and try and sort on the Date - it sorts that field in a string sort, not numeric sort, so I get 1/2001, 1/2002, 1/2003, etc. instead of 1/2001, 2/2001, 3/2001.
    Any way to cure or change the sort order behavior?

  • Reminders-sort order of tasks does not sync

    I'm trying to use Reminders on my iPhone 4s, iMac running Mountain Lion and iCloud. Although syncing does occur BETWEEN THESE 3 APPS,
    THE SORT ORDER OF THE TASKS IS COMPLETELY OUT OF SYNC. I need to sort my many to do tasks manually as priorities change
    daily. Therefore it's important to have the sort order (sequence of task items) sync across these devices. I imagine many users would agree with this.

    Just discovering for myself that re-ordering reminders can be achieved - but order is not synced between devices or shared accounts. Which is to say it's about as much use as a chocolate teapot.
    For the record, I have thrown the equivalent of a message in a bottle to feedback - an action for which I believe the acronym is CWOT.
    Also, it seems there's a thing called customer quality feedback...
    Visit our Customer Quality Feedback (CQF) site at: http://www.cqf.apple.com/
    However, it doesn't work...
    Alas, it seems the writing is on the wall for Apple.
