Messaging Multiplexor

We are running SunOne Messaging and Directory (Both version 5.2) We have a multiplexor/front-end server on a DMZ to enable access from the internet.
The problem is the first time that you logon nothing happens. From the logs the last thing that you see is
post /login.msc HTTP/1.0
It then waits (about 10 minutes) before it comes up with
username plaintext sid=jaehjgad proxy to mailstore.ourdomain.com
It then sits there doing nothing. If you then refresh the page and put your login details in again it goes straight into your email.
Can anyone explain this behaviour?

Store and Multiplexor are both on 5.2 Patch level 1.21
ulimit -n gave 256 for both boxes - we will swap that over tonight

  • Sun One Instant Messaging Multiplexor

I have instaled the Sun One Instant Messaging in a Windows 2000 server with service pack 4, few days passed when sudenly the service start to fail because of the multiplexor service unexpectedly terminiation. The event log shows this information:
    date: date
    time: time
    Type: Error
    User: N/A
    Computer: Server
    Source: Service Control Manager
    Category: None
    Event ID: 7031
Description: The Sun ONE Instant Messaging Multiplexor service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 60000 milliseconds: Restart the service.
I hope someone could help me and tell why is this happening,

Do you hgave a multiplexor log file (mux.log)? What happens if you start the multiplexor by hand? Here is how:
stop the multiplexor, start the server, then from the promt:
    cd <installdir>
    cd bin
    multiplexor -c <installdir>/config/iim.conf

  • Use messaging multiplexor to redirect to non-sun imap/pop3 servers?

Can the Messaging Multiplexor be used to redirect an IMAP/POP user to a non-Sun messaging server? For example, could we use the multiplexor to establish a single server name for IMAP/POP3 clients, but have the multiplexor redirect specific users to an MS Exchange back-end over IMAP/POP3? We will have identical usernames and passwords on the Sun Directory Server and in Active Directory.
    Thanks much!
    Craig

It can be done. You will need to "provision" all your users in LDAP, just as you would for Messaging Server. Put the Exchange box in as "mailhost".
Then, you will need to have MMP know what commands Exchange offers, so you can restrict MMP to showing just that subset of the protocol. Check the MMP doc for how to do that.

  • Where can i get the time stamp in Messaging Multiplexor's log?

i have modify the loglevel to 10,but i can only find the date informatioin in mmp's log like this:
    20060317 000000 PopProxyAService.cfg (sid 0xd100c4) USER login
which is the "time" stamp and what's it means?
i have read the Administration Guide/Reference,but didn't find session abt it.
where can i get some documents abt how to read the mmp's log file?
    thx!

  • Multiplexor ssl

    hi
I have one machine with pop multiplexor installed (messaging 6.1), i want to set up pop with ssl.
    i did the following
    1) i installed a certificate using the console.
    2) cd msg_svr_base/config
    ln -s /var/mps/serverroot/alias/admin-serv-instance-cert8.db cert8.db
    ln -s /var/mps/serverroot/alias/admin-serv-instance-key3.db key3.db
    3) i edited the PopProxyAService.cfg file and uncomment
the relevant SSL settings like the manual said.
    4) i edited the AService.cfg file and add |995 after the 110 in the ServiceList setting.
    5) start-msg mmp
but i can start the ssl service.
i look at the logs files and i get the following.
    20040618 183334 /opt/SUNWmsgsr/config/PopProxyAService.cfg ASockSSL_Init: PK11 auth failed to Server-Cert
    20040618 183334 /opt/SUNWmsgsr/config/PopProxyAService.cfg Messaging Multiplexor (Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 6.1 (built Apr 28 2004)) started
any idea of what could be the problem

Sorry to open this old case again, but I'm having the same problem. But all the things said above seems to be OK...
each time I start the mmp, I get this in the logs (pop and imap) :

I'm about to open a case to the support team, but I'm checking here in case someone would have a hint...

  • Problem Connecting to Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 6.2-3.05

    Hi All,
I am trying to connect to Sun Messaging Server from my program. Till now I tested the program against all other popular IMAP servers with out any problem. I have set the debug to true. I am not able to figure why the connection is getting reset. Any help would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks in Advance

I vaguely remember that there was a Messaging Server bug that
caused it to fail because JavaMail was sending it two packets
containing the data but it was expecting all the data to be in one
packet. I thought JavaMail was fixed to send it one packet, to
avoid the bug, and I thought the server was fixed as well so be
sure to check for relevant patches. And be sure you're using the
    latest version of JavaMail.
If I remember correctly, telnet was batching the data for the entire
line and sending it in a single packet, which is why it worked when
    using telnet.
You might try a network protocol analyzer (sniffer) like snoop on
Solaris or tcpdump on Linux to see exactly what packets are being
    sent.

  • Re: Getting the updated unread message count...

    I assume you're opening the folder read/write.
The IMAP protocol may allow the behavior here to be server-dependent.
What IMAP server are you using?

I did run a protocol trace.
I started the 2nd program mid-way the 1st program had run. The protocol traces they both generated were identical (with no difference at ALL!!)
Here is the trace (I could not make much of it :( )

    ok,let's discuss with data.
i want to migrate another domain "soft.com" to my current Messaging Server,
i have created the new host domain : soft.com ,and the user "testmail" belongs to that domain.
the following show the process of my login.
220 ESMTP Messaging Multiplexor (iPlanet Messaging Server 5.2 (built Feb 21 2002)
    helo soft.com
    250 mail2
    auth login

    mail from:[email protected]
    250 2.5.0 Address Ok.
    quit
221 2.3.0 Bye received. Goodbye.becase i start the ssl connection for user to send and receive mail ,so i have to use mmp as smtp/pop/imap proxy. i don't want the user of domian "soft.com" need modify any of their mail client after the migration ,that means, the user of domain "soft.com" can login use "testmail",but not "[email protected]".
    i don't know whether i have described my question clearly,thanks for endure my lame english~ ! :)

  • Email authentication problem on only some of Verizon's servers

I use Eudora 6.2.4 on an iMac Core 2 Duo 2.0 20" (Al) Macintosh running OX 10.5.5.  Like many others (see one thread each under FiOS Internet and High Speed Internet and Dialup), since about mid-November, I have been receiving intermittent (about 10% of the time) authentication errors when Eudora checks for new mail.  I have 3 VZ e-mail accounts and one at my employer; the errors occur only on the VZ accounts.
I've used the freeware app Eavesdrop (http://code.google.com/p/eavesdrop/) to observe the TCP conversations between Eudora and the server. The VZ server offers SASL CRAM-MD5 PLAIN, and Eudora uses CRAM-MD5.  I see the challenge from the server, Eudora's response, and the server's authentication-failure response.  Since the response is hashed, I have no way of telling if Eudora is sending the correct response, but it works most of the time.  (After it fails, Eudora then assumes its stored password is NG, discards it, and prompts me for it on the next mail-check, which is just a bit annoying.)
Here is an example of a successful mail-check:
    +OK Messaging Multiplexor (Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 6.2-6.01 (built Apr  3 2006)) <[email protected]>

    -ERR [AUTH] Authentication failed
You'll notice that the VZ server identifies itself at the onset of each conversation, including a build ID and date, followed by a timestamp and a server ID (e.g., vms109.mailsrvcs.net).  I'm in eastern Massachusetts, and when my client connects to incoming.verizon.net, one of a pool of V servers responds.  I've observed about 15 different servers, of which two (vms171011 and vms171013) show "6.3-7.04 (built Sep 26 2008)" and all the others show "6.2-6.01 (built Apr  3 2006)".  Furthermore, I observe that vms171011 and vms171013 consistently give this authentication failure for CRAM-MD5, but all the others (with the older build) consistently succeed in authenticating my accounts.
I called FiOS Support, and the CSR took down took down some relevant info, said she'd pass it on the the e-mail folks.  Within 2 hours I got a call from a Verizon tech.  He said they "knew" about it and that it was a Mac problem.  It wasn't specific to VZ, and it occurred only on Macs.   He had no explanation for my observation that mail-check authentication works with 13 of VZ's servers and consistently fails with two which have a later build version/date, but he believed it was consistent with it being an Apple problem.  So naturally he was off the hook.
He referred me to an Apple Support Forum discussion to back up his position.  I hadn't seen (or thought of looking in) the Apple forums, so I had a look and found a total of 5 threads under "Mail and Address Book".  Of course, these deal with Mail.app, .  Comcast as well as VZ.  This is the lengthiest of them:
      http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8478765#8478765
These Apple discussion threads and the two Verizon Forum threads all mention Macintoshes, which lends credence to the tech's assertion that it's a Mac problem, not Verizon's.  I've found one that seems to depict the same thing on a PC (http://groups.google.com/group/comp.mail.eudora.ms-windows/browse_thread/thread/b426c0ca59841ca9), but it's not conclusive.
I don't know what PeeCee users use for a mail client or what method they use for authentication (the POP3 protocol, as amended, has several possibilities).  My Eudora app has settings for "Password", "Kerberos", and "APOP", but VZ doesn't offer Kerberos, and Eudora seems to ignore the APOP setting, so it uses only the CRAM-MD5 method, so I'm stuck.  I can't disprove that this is a Mac-only problem, but I can't understand why the CRAM-MD5 authentication always works with 13 of VZ's servers and always fails with 2 others (which happen to have a different build version/date).
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

With the help of a Windows-using friend, I have additional evidence that the mail-check authentication problem is NOT Mac-specific, but also can be shown to occur with a POP3 client (the final version, Eudora 7.1.0.9) using a secure authentication method (APOP) on Windows (XP Home, SP 3).  He had been observing no authentication problems, but investigation showed that his authentication setting was for "Password", which uses the basic (and very insecure) USER/PASS messages.  His Eudora does not allow CRAM-MD5, but it does have APOP authentication, which is another secure method that also uses the MD5 algorithm to encrypt the password.
When he changed the setting to use APOP authentication, he observed the same behavior that I've reported above:
       - with most of the VZ servers (e.g., vms095.mailsrvcs.net, vms104.mailsrvcs.net) that show "6.2-6.01 (built Apr  3 2006)", the authentication succeeds
       - with vms171011.mailsrvcs.net and vms171013.mailsrvcs.net, which show "6.3-7.04 (built Sep 26 2008)", the authentication fails.
    See examples below.
Here's a successful mail-check (these excerpts are from the Eudora log; I've edited his username):

IMHO all this evidence validates my original hypothesis, that two (or more) of VZ's mail servers, which have server builds "6.3-7.04 (built Sep 26 2008)", advertise secure CRAM-MD5 and APOP authentication capabilities, but consistently fail such authentication attempts.  All the other servers with builds "6.2-6.01 (built Apr  3 2006)" handle these authentications correctly.  This has been shown to be the case on both Mac and Windows POP3 email clients.  Email clients that use the simpler and unsecure USER/PASS and AUTH PLAIN methods apparently see no authentication errors on any of the VZ servers.  This strongly points to this being a Verizon problem specific to two of the servers that we see here in eastern Massachusetts.  Others have also observed the same server-specificity; see for example http://eudorabb.qualcomm.com/showthread.php?t=13802 .  This problem has been reported since about mid-November.
Verizon, the ball is in your court.  Find the problem and fix it!

  • Webmail / Messenger Express

    Hello guys,
can sombody tell me. how bring up the Webmail Page ie Messenger Express. i want to send email through webmail, as i tried http://<hostname>:<webmailport> ie 80, but i m not able to browse the Webmail Login Page, I've also checked my HTTP service, its up & running
I can only see the iPlanet Webserver Enterprise edition default page..
    Anyidea ?
Do i have to installed MMP(Messaging Multiplexor ?
    Thanks in Advance.

Looks like you start the httpd daemon from your web-server before you start the http daemon from messaging.
Try stopping your web-server on port 80, the issue /server-root/msg-instance/start-msg httpd
    see if that helps

    Hi Jay,
after using real imap port, instead multiplexor :)) this start to work.
    But,
we tried to move single mailbox and server reported:
Server responded [Server hosting this mailbox is not available]
we repeated same command once again and than mailbox was moved normaly?!
same thing occurs with other mailboxes. some are moved after single command and some after 2-4 retries..
    any idea?

  • Mmp config question

    Hi,
I'm trying to setup mmp to allow remote users to check emails via IMAP and send via SMTP submit. Configuring IMAP portion was clear and works but I'm not sure I understand all required steps for SMTP.
    1. AService.cfg
    default:ServiceList /opt/SUNWmsgsr/lib/ImapProxyAService@143|993 /opt/SUNWmsgsr/lib/SmtpProxyAService.so@587
    2. SmtpProxyAService.cfg

    mmp# mconnect -p 587
connecting to host localhost (127.0.0.1), port 587
    connection open

    helo
421 4.3.0 Service not available now.
Do I need to configure something on the back end?
Is using MMP correct for my purpose or should it be complete MTA? Basicly, allowing remote users to relay.
    Thanks,
    d.

    Thanks for the answer.
    Let me rephrase my question:
To configure a server that will be sitting in a DMZ for the purpose of allowing remote users to check and send emails, one would configure MMP for IMAP access and MTA for
    SMTP submit. Am I correct?
    Thanks again,
    d.
    Before we go any further.
There is ONLY one valid use for the SMTP proxy
included with MMP. Pop before SMTP.
For ANY other use, you should install the MTA. SMTP
proxy is a very, very limited application, and should
not be used as a general purpost smtp relay. It just
    can't handle that.

    Further update...
Got Labview to work on Win XP Pro on a PII 400.
However, the serial rs 232 communication is slow getting a response from our equipment. We communicate at 19200. Tried to remove many of the "services" in xp that seemed irrelovent to our application(as I think most are totally needless) with some improvement. Also, downloaded "serpdrv" files from NI but none of the newer ones listed worked at all. My Labview program tries to communicate about once per second and I get data delay warnings if there is no response after 3+ seconds. Any further thoughts... Thanks"

  • Can't add email to my mac mail account.

I recently started having problems with my mail account.  I deleted the mail folder and started over and now can no longer add any email accounts besides my icloud account.  When I try I get the following message.
Logging in to the optonline.net POP server “mail.optonline.net” failed. Make sure the user name and password you entered are correct, then click Continue. If the information isn’t correct, you cannot receive messages.
My mail accounts still work on my ipad and iphone with the exact same information.  Something else I find strange, when I go to add a new account my old deleted account already appears in the email address section.  Why would a deleted account, presumably one it should n't know anymore come up as a suggestion without me adding it?  Does mail keep a copy of the account hidden somewhere else besides the plist and in the hidden library?
I am at wits end.  I can think of any reason that I shouldn't be able to add the email when all the information is correct.  I have also checked my computer for viruses and malware with several programs, the latest one being SOPHOS.  Any suggestions?
