Method of navigating inconsistent among Final Cut and Soundtrack Pro

I'm quite annoyed that navigation along the timeline is not the same in Soundtrack Pro as it is in Final Cut. Is anyone else bothered by this? Have you ever read a good explanation?
John Link

It certainly would. Adobe pulled down a lot of their software so they could rewrite it from scratch, to make it work uniformly. Maybe Apple's heading the same way in the background. Ever use Color? That too has entirely different origins and a completely different UI and workflow.

  • Final Cut and Soundtrack Pro

Just recently upgraded to Lion and having issues now with FCP and now Soundtrack Pro. I never had any problems until the upgrade, also noticed that my Quicktime Pro is gone, which I used all the time for making flv files for my website for all those in the world who insist on not loading QT on their machines. I am having to use QT 7.6.6 to do that and my flash files are doing strange things.
    http://homepage.mac.com/ote_productions/Malcom.html
Yes, it's supposed to flash like that because I degraded the footage, but not that bad. It has never done anything like that before.
Another problem I'm having is I have a Macbook Pro hooked up to an old 20" Apple Cinema Display DVI late 2005, I never had issues with it, but now when I got to full screen on my FCP it is making strange lines in the footage as it play back. Never did this before, when I display on the 15" laptop monitor, no issues.
Soundtrack Pro crashed on me 3 times this morning, never does that.
Anyone else having any problems? I'm afraid to upgrade to the new FCP because of what I"m reading online about it. I think Apple needs to release a fix for this or are they trying to force us to use the new version and not worried about the old version? I am a professional who using these apps daily to do my job and it is causing me time that I am losing money on.
Please fix Apple we depend on these apps to work. Wish I had not upgraded to Lion now!

Why are you being forced to use the new version of anything... including the operating system?
If you are a professional then you always stick with what works and/or use what it takes to get the job done.
STP is not supported under Lion, it's been discontinued, EOL.
I worry about you Mac folks.... the days of auto-upgrading to the latest and "greatest" are over, "It Just Works" only pertains to iMovie, Garageband and apps included with the OS.
Apple is a hardware company, their software is designed to sell hardware, Lion requires more memory and processing power as does FCPX.

  • Final Cut to Soundtrack Pro Audio Drift

I have Final Cut Pro 7 and Soundtrack Pro 3 (the latest ones) and I can't figure out why when I send my audio to Soundtrack Pro the edits are off. I'm using multitrack multitrack project and exporting from Final Cut, but my in point on my audio clips changes to a little earlier and ends a little earlier. It's like it's drifting. I'm using aif files. Everything seems normal. I thought this version of Final Cut Studio would enable me to easily do this.
    Any ideas?
BTW I am running Snow Leopard, but that should be a good thing right?

You are pushing the envelope working in fcp6 in Mavericks.  Did you do a clean install of Mavericks and FCP?  That's usually the way to get a stable system.  Here's a user tip on Installing OS and FCP

As a workaround, can you just save an aiff in soundtrack pro and bring that in to fcp?

  • Live capturing from Panasonic AG-HVX200 using Final Cut and MacBook Pro

Does anyone know if the MacBoko Pro using Final Cut can capture live 1080i video from a Panasonic AG-HVX200 to an external firewire hard drive?

Great info. I'll get on those other forums.
Not that it is an 'issue,' but to answer the question I was INITIALLY thinking of getting a laptop just to capture video, and edit on my desktop. But I see that the advice of getting the biggest baddest laptop would be a better idea and I've read others say that being able to edit 'on the road,' is a great potential.
I checked out the only tested and approved by Panasonic Firestore and it's the FOCUS FS-100 that comes standard with a 100GB hard drive that provides 1.5 hours of DVCPRO HD recording time with a list price of $2,195.00.
(If using PAL, you need the PAL version)
Other than the valuable other forums mentioned here, I found a good site for FAQ's for the Mac/AG-HVX-200/FCP, at: https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/support/cs/csregistp2m/ep2main/faq/p2faq .htm
These FAQ's, above, say that "going directly into a PC is possible, but it may fail to record some frames per second. This depends on the performance of PC. So we do not recommend this method."
There is a rebate if buying the USA warrentied camera before the end of the year: a free 8GB P2 card (advertised as a $1,200 value)
I think this answers all my questions about this topic. Thanks everyone for the info and the patience.
P.S. - There is a free contest, BTW, to win the biggest badest laptop, the 17"-MacBook Pro, at http://www.pcmag.com (of all places!)

  • Sending a Subclips audio from Final Cut to Soundtrack Pro

After reading the manual very carefully, I am still unable to send audio to SoundTrack Pro Effectively.
When I have Several clips in a sequence (or even just one) I can select "Send to Multitrack Project." However, even when selecting a single clip from either the browser, or on the timeline "send to audiofile project" is always greyed out, and at this stage in my audio work that's what I need to do! I'm trying to remove background noise, and do other various post work to individual clips.
I have discovered that if I unlink the audio and video, I can send either the right, or left track of the audio to SoundTrack Pro as an audiofile project. The audio was recorded as mono on two tracks and captured on an XL2 as DV Footage.
Can someone please point me in the right direction as to what I need to do? Thanks.

    Jonathan:
You can only send single tracks to "audio file projects."
Try saving the two tracks you want to send as a stereo pair.

  • Final cut w/ soundtrack pro

When I try to send audio from a clip to Soundtrack pro, my "send to Soundtrack as an audio file' is greyed out. I can only send as a multitrack project. Why? and what should I do?

Do you have more than one audio clip selected? You can only send one audio clip at a time to STP as an audio FILE project. Any more than one is a Multitrack project.

  • Where to buy more cinematic musics for Final cut's SoundTrack???

I love the cinematic musics included in garageband and soundtrack like
there's this piano song called "Newborn"
    Others are like
    -Broadcast News Long
    -Celestial Body Long
    -Investigation Long
    -Medal Ceremony Long
    -Piano Ballad
In Garageband these are in the Jingles section and in SoundTrack they are also somewhere in there
I'm not exactly sure where they c ame from but i bought 2 jampacks for garageband way back, so they may be from there or where already in garageband. Anyways, these are the kind i want. I want lots, of course i'm willing to buy them online. But is there a site that sellls those kinds of cinematic short music compositions?
I have Final Cut and SoundTrack 1.5

    hey there jonsondonson,
you can use Acid loops in GB & ST/STP, they have samples from their CD collections for listening to on-line, but i don't know if they're downloadable.
    see this link: http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/loop_libraries/?keycode=7777-4701
    good luck.

  • Final Cut and TOD

    Hey everyone,
I've started using Final Cut, and I'm told the best codec to import for my purposes is DV. I've been using a JVC Everio HDD which creates TOD files. I started using two different programs, one to convert TOD to MP4, and then from MP4 to DV, but so much quality is lost. Is there a converter for Mac that will bridge TOD to DV without having to spend $30 on shareware?
    Any ideas?

That's strange. I went to this webpage:
    http://everio.jvc.com/specifications.html
and that says that the Everio records to AVCHD. You're saying it doesn't, so that leaves me confused.
You read the chapter about using Log & Transfer to bring the files into Final Cut, right? That doesn't work? It's not talking about streaming the video/audio. It's talking about a file from the camcorder's HDD that is imported via Log & Transfer, not Log & Capture.
Are on the same page of the playbook now?
If using L&T doesn't work with the Everio, that's that. But based on your reply, I'm not convinced you've tried the right method. Maybe you have, and you're just not communicating it so I get it.

  • Ripping dvd footage to Final Cut and re-exporting to DVD

    Greetings,
I'm taking footage off of various dvd materials with the intention of bringing them into final cut and re-exporting an edited product onto dvd. My method has been, thus far: to rip whichever chapters I'm looking for using Mac the Ripper, bring the chapters (VOBs) into MPEG Streamclip for 100% quality conversion to the 'Apple DV - PAL' setting, and then bringing those files into final cut for editing. However, it seems no matter what my export setting is, I'm getting quality loss on the finished product - a bit of pixelation (most evident on high-def televisions), etc. Converting the .VOBs to an Uncompressed setting wouldn't work as I'm working with hours of accumulated footage and the space it would consume wouldn't be a possibility. What I don't understand is why, when I burn a cloned dvd using Mac the Ripper there's hardly any quality loss at all, but here I'm getting quite a bit. Is this due to a re-compression happening somewhere? And is there any way of getting rid of it? Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank You.

There is about four or five generational losses in your workflow.
There isn't a way around that.
Use the original footage to preserve quality in the process.
Plus, why is MacTheRipper necessary with non commercial DVDs?

  • I open final cut and...

    I open final cut and...
Hello, i really need help here! I open final cut in the brand new lion and what happens is that the program seems to go to an invisible window… when i open mission control it is there, but if i click in it… gone again! anyone?

Yuck, sounds pretty frustrating. I would start by doing a split half troubleshooting approach.
Using this method: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4740 I would hide all projects and events
Launch FCPX and see if it works correclty.
If it does, start by moving projects back one by one, quiting and launching FCPX between moves.
It may be a corrupt or bad project. Then do the same for events.
If you narrow it down to one event or project, starting removing files inside those folders to figure out which one may be causing the issue,
    Good Luck!

  • Final Cut and After Effects "file is busy"

    Hello All-
I am running Final Cut Pro 5.1.4 and After Effects 7.0.1 Pro (on OS 10.4.8) and I have a question. I have a series of After Effects animated DV Quicktime clips edited together in Final Cut, and when I make changes to the After Effects project files and try to rerender, I get an error:
    After Effects error: unable to overwrite - file is busy (delete) (-47) ( 3 :: 3 )
It's like Final Cut is "holding onto" the files and not allowing After Effects to rerender them. If I close down Final Cut, I can rerender just fine, but this gets real annoying closing it down and restarting it every time I need to rerender a clip. The problem is, because of my workflow, I need to do this dozens of times a day with clients in the room and I'm spending a lot of time closing and restarting Final Cut over the course of a day... is there way to do this without closing down Final Cut?
I assigned After Effects to be the "External Editor" for "Video Files", and used Final Cut's "Open In Editor" command. It sends the quicktime file to After Effects (not exactly what I want) and you would think that at this point Final Cut would have relenquished its access to the file so that I could rerender in After Effects, but nope, I still get the error. I have tried this with the User Preference setting "Always Reconnect Externally Modified Files" both on and off, no difference. I have also tried "Embed Project Link" in After Effects's quicktime output options, but this didn't help anything (I believe this only affects other Adobe apps).
The weird part of this is that when I drop a Photoshop file onto the Final Cut timeline, I can do "Open in Editor", it throws it to Photoshop, I can alter it and save with no problem, and pop back into Final Cut and it will be updated. But no such luck with Quicktime files and After Effects.
Let me know if there is a solution to this, or if I am stuck having to shut down Final Cut every single time I need to rerender one of the After Effects animation clips in the timeline.

What i have to suggest is more of a work around than it is a solution. i've had this problem off and on as well. What i do is add a number to the name of the newly rendered file, (ie. "monkey_throwspoo2.mov") import that file into FCP, open it in the viewer, and then copy it (apple + c). Provided it's the smae length as the previous file, you can right click on the previous file in the timeline and paste attributes, making sure to click on the content button for video (and audio if there is any). This should replace the old file in the timeline with the new one. Granted, you end up having a bunch of files that you're not using, but it's faster than restarting Final Cut (and looks more like it's something you're doing on purpose rather than a problem with the program to your clients). Hope this helps.

  • Using still images with Final Cut (and the apple suite in general)

I have had a re-occuring and long term problem that has caused me many lost hours of head scratching and work arounds, and as of yet I have not been able to come up with a good solution.
Its to do with integrating still images with the Final Cut suite.
If I receive a high quality image from a client to use in their video and I then try importing it into Final Cut and animating it, it always ends up looking like a pile of ahem. Often I will get "swimming" lines appear across fine detail on the image, and parts of it will flicker as it moves across the screen. For instance, if I have a picture of some blinds or other fine detail (especially horizontal and vertical lines), when I add a grow and throw movement to it the detail will become very noisy - buzzing and flickering like mad.
I have found I can counter this by resizing the image in photoshop to a resolution closer to SD video (700w or 500h) - but I always end up losing detail, and the flickering and noise is only reduced, not eliminated. Other things that have helped are blur effects applied at a very low level, like 0.5 blur, so its not noticeable visually, but Final Cut seems to treat it differently and quieten the noise and flicker down.
However, all of these workarounds are ultimately still giving a reduced quality product.
Also, this problem is not necessarily constrained to Final Cut, I am currently fighting DVD Studio Pro because it is murdering the text quality in a stills slideshow I am creating - and in this situation there is no animation being applied. No matter what file type (psd, jpeg, tiff, png...) or size I output the text and images from Photoshop in, the moment DVD studio pro gets hold of it, it turns to cripe.
For a while I was putting it down to the fact that I usually edit in SD (PAL) formats, and there just wasn't the resolution available to reproduce fine detail. However, I do often see other people achieving pin-sharp fine detail on still images and text in SD formats (the Apple templates are a good example)
So, my question to you, oh great and high boffins, if you are dealing with still images and text, how do you do it? How do you work around any noise problems you have, and how do you produce those pin-sharp images (both moving and still) I see in other professional productions?
    Quad G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

still images with too high a resolution will always cause problems. this is due to the detail of the image being finer than the scanline of the tv can display ... obviously this will caise the image to flicker as these details alternately appear and disappear as and when the scanline can display them. as you have discovered, the answer is to apply a very small blur, the effect being that the detail is spread by the blur such that the scanline can dislay it correctly.
text issues are often rooted in the same problem ... unless the text is placed very carefully (whole even number on the y axis) then the quality may be impaired due to the resulting interlacing/scanline issues

Your media is stored in Final Cut Events folder > "name of event"  > original media. The Final Cut Events folder is in your movies folder or at the root level of an external drive if you are using one to store your media. Simply open iMovie and under file menu select import movies. Navigate to the original media folder and import your clips to Imovie event library.

  • Hi, I downloaded the app for macbook "Lens Flare for Final Cut" and I've struggled a lot to install this app at final cut . Someone could help me ? i´m from Mexico i speak spanish

Hi, I downloaded the app for macbook "Lens Flare for Final Cut" and I've struggled a lot to install this app at final cut . Someone could help me ? how i can install this app in Final Cut? this app cost me money and not is working to me, i am disappointed sorry if a write bad, i´m from Mexico i speak spanish

This is a user2user board for FCPX - maybe better you discuss your issues with the makers of that 'plug in'
Seems for me a  bit 'fishy', isn't it? - other professional plug-in makers deliver with an installer... That advice at AppStore, how to install it, is ... rare:
How install it ? – click the launch button. Motion 5 will start itself. When Motion is open click save as. Write a generator name - Lens Flare and choose category RGB HOUSE or make it. Click Publish and you are done. If you don’t have Motion 5 look at support site - how to install in FCP.
How it works ? – In Final Cut Pro you will find in Generators RGB HOUSE group, where will be Lens Flare. Drag this generator above all clips in timeline. When it’s there remember to change blending mode to Screen (in video section). You can adjust color, steak color, glow, intensity, scale - apacity and blur of artifacts, position. Any parameter could be stored as a keyframe, so You can easily animate the flare.
so, I don't speak Spanish, lets have some fun with translate.google...:
Hope it makes at last a little sense... I don't trust these automatic translators
(the German translation is ... awesome funny!)
Finally: it's from 2012! Needs probably an update - contact the dealer!
