  • Help on Wiping My Mac Book Pro and Reinstalling

I got a new Mac Book Pro in January.  It is running Lion and OS 10.7.2.  When I got it the Apple Store transferred all my settings, files etc from my previous Mac Book Pro (running Snow Leopard).
Since getting my new Mac the battery life is terrible (lasting about 2-3 hours after a full charge just when browsing the internet), I constantly get the spinning wheel for what have never been demanding operations in the past, and if charging, my Mac sounds like it's about to take off! It's so noisy (I think it's the fans inside)!
My assumption is that in moving everything over, disk errors may also have been moved over.  Fixing them in Disk Utilities hasn't worked and so I think it would be worthwhile wiping my whole machine and reinstalling everything.  I am unsure however quite how to do this.  What I could do with easy to see steps please!  I also have some other questions to go with the reinstalling:
    1. I currently have Microsoft Office on my Mac.  If I wipe my machine will I be able to reinstall Office again (bear in mind I had it installed on my old Mac so I don't know if there's a limit to the number of machines you can have it on? Do I need to uninstall it first so as to de-register it?  Or do you never need to de-register the product?
    2. What's the best way to reinstall my files and folders?  I have a time machine but if I back up from my time machine will it bring back the former file corruptions?  Is it best therefore just to drag and drop files off the latest time machine onto a freshly set-up Mac?
    3. Is there anything I need to do/any information I will need for this process?
    I really appreciate the help!

I had an issue where I had to wipe my mac as well. What you have to do to format the hard drive and reinstall is this:
Restart the computer while holding down the option key. Choose the recovery disc. Find the main hard disc and hit format. Then you can reinstall Lion via the internet, it takes a while though, my computer took 5 hours or so.
For your first question, if you got the family version of office, I believe you have 3 computers you can authorize it on. If you are not sure, look it up in the apple store.
For the second: Time machine would probably be your best option, but I would reccomend restoring from a backup before you were having problems, and restore that one (put new files you need on another external or a digital-online storeage site such as dropbox.) To restore a backup, restart your computer and hold command+R and select "Restore from Time Machine Backup" (for more information go here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427 )
I don't believe tere is anything else you need to do, but I am new to macs, so I may not be the best source, but this is what I have found/have had to do.

  • Why did my Mac book pro 2012 literally slow to a crawl overnight?

    Hello,
Im new to Mac products so bear with me
I'm running an OS X 10.9.1 13 Mac book pro with 4 GB of memory. I can usually play video games, and edit videos with it. And overheating has never been a problem.
Today alll the applications are taking 30-40 seconds to open and even longer to click between tasks. Sometimes i see a beach balll, but generally the notebook just seems to not respond. The boot time seems to have increased too.
Disk check - Hard drive scan showed no problems and I have over 30% Disk space left
Disk repair permissions - It took about an hour and repaired some stuff. But still slow
    Activity monitor
    kernel_task 1.9% and activity monitor 0.6%
    user % 0.3, System 0.5% and idle 99 %
    Read in/sec 0
    Read out/sec 0
    Physical Memory: 4GB
    Memory used: 3.46 GB
    File cache: 1.52GB

I heard some people could interpret this. I'm currently using a library PC cause typing on my Mac would take eons......its that slow
    can anyone help?

Please don't post "etrecheck" output in a reply to me. I have no use for it.
    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a few minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.

  • Which is better - Mac book pro or air book ?

Which is better a Mac book pro or an air book.  What is the pros and cons in using ??

It depends on your preference and how you will use it. Example, if you're a designer, engineer, doing a lot of video editing, sound editing, then you'll appreciate the horsepower the Pro which means "Professional" can offer you. If you're a student, or someone who'll be using primarily for document making or presentation, then the Air would fit you, plus a bonus with the name Air which means "ultra light". The big difference though is the processing speed of the two laptops. The Pro uses full processor speed, while the Air for thermal concerns uses a slightly slower processor.
Good Luck picking the one which will suit you

  • Hi, I'm considering gettting a mac book pro. I've been a pc user. I want to know anyone's opinion on the mac book pro compared to a pc.

I'm considering buying a mac book pro. I want a few opinions about the mac book pro compared to a pc. I've been a pc user. How do you rate the mac compared to a pc?

With Mac's, there are less software and hardware choices, Apple almost demands you upgrade the operating system (paid) annually now, then inflicts all sorts of unexpected UI changes etc., and breaks your third party software/hardware.
With Windows you might have malware, but on Mac's the pain comes with constant OS X upgrades and bricking of third party software, it's like Apple has no stability.
DRM is becoming standard issue, you can't install OS X on your own via the disks, it has to be downloaded from Apple now.
OS X is turning into iOS that's all controlling, all Apps are copy protected, open source software is not allowed.
Hardware quality is mixed now, 13" and below have cheap low res glossy screens like any other $400 Walmart PC, the 15" and up high res anti-glare are very nice models.
OS X is just a paint job on hardware with Apple "oh a new OS!", it's not a stable long term operating system in the sense that Windows versions are which you can set it up, make a backup and go on nearly forever.
At least with Windows one can reinstall the OS and get updates for 10+ years, all one has to do is buy quality long lasting hardware from a huge choice of vendors.
So value wise, hardware and software choice, 3D gaming, business world, standardization etc., Windows 7 is pretty sweet now. Vista and XP of course were terrible.
Apple's OS X Lion is terrible, it's the beginning of the end, a transition to locked down iOS X on Mac's and Apple's exit from the "computing" market into something only for consumers only really based on the closed iOS concept. They are really going overboard on this, pushing the App Store in your face when you do searches and everything.
The "candy like" OS X interface gets kind of tiring, it used to be we could avoid a lot of it, but now Apple is pressing it more into one's faces.  So forget having a professional or mature look about OS X anymore.
The App Store is like something made and to appeal to children and Toy Story cartoon watchers, not appealing to mature serious people.
OS X is pretty and all, the high quality screens of Mac's make OS X look nice and attractive, but I also run Windows 7 on my Mac and it looks just as great, Windows also has a more mature looking UI.
All in all there is really no advantage to getting a Mac over a PC anymore, since with Win 7 Microsoft provides the free Security Essentials and System Restore to make disks and images to restore one's own machine themselves easy as pie.
I'm a long time Mac user, from day one, because Mac's were innovative and more secure than Windows, however Apple has tarnished that image when I found out they were not issuing security updates for older OS X versions and not fast enough for Java, (they control) which resulted in a 600,000 botnet of Mac's called Flashflake.
Sure finally Apple issued a security update for 10.5 users, but on Intel processors only, not the zillions still on PowerPC processor Mac's.
Apple is so much about change to sell hardware that they burn bridges behind them, hopefully that will change now under Tim Cook's rule, (Steve Jobs died) I suspect it will.
Apple's OS X market share has been decreasing, not because Apple isn't selling things, but rather a larger portion of it's users are now using iOS devices instead of Mac's.
Before iOS arrived, it was 10% of users on OS X/Macs, now it's 4% iOS and 6% on OS X/Macs as recorded outside of China's Great Firewall.
I guess the positive thing is, I've only got one piece of malware on my Mac's in 24 years, however I've spent about 10x more for my computers over the years than my PC using friends have because of all the Apple hardware and OS X changes draining my wallet.
For instance they changed video out from DVI to Dual DVI, to Displayport to something else and now Thunderbolt, it's just insane you can't go back into a Apple store and pickup a piece of hardware anymore or older OS X, they start pumping you to change this or that and don't tell you what's it's really going to cost in the end to upgrade everything.
I swear they want us to turn over our machines every two years now like a iPhone or something.
If your a smart PC user, you know then what hardware to buy and how to reinstall Windows yourself, I don't see why you would give up so much hardware and software choice to use a locked down, DRMed Mac that's designed for newbies and children mostly and exiting the "pro" type market more and more every year.
If you think my compaints about Apple above pale in comparison to your experience with Windows 7, then by all means get a Mac, bring a fat wallet and they will be all over you like any high end fashion or Gucci store would.

  • MAC BOOK PRO OR I MAC

today i want to purchase either an i mac or macbook pro. please help me to choose one. my main interest is to work with photos. if mac book pro is capable of dealing with high end software like adobe photoshop cs6, is it preferrable to buy it or should i go for I mac? please tell me

iMac has a big screen is is capable or Phot Editing, iMovie, watching movies, view images in larger screens.
iMac can hold better memory better.
    Pros:
Attractive, sleek, and solid industrial design.
Quite fast. In addition to fast processors, currently shipping "Mid-2011" and "Late 2011" as well as discontinued "Mid-2010" models all have "dedicated" graphics for improved performance compared to some earlier models as well.
All 21.5-Inch and 27-Inch models have beautiful LED-backlit displays created for optimum use with 16:9 high-definition video.
RAM is very easy to upgrade and the processor in some models can be upgraded as well.
Dual-layer DVD write support, 802.11n, and Firewire "800" standard in all configurations (the current "Mid-2011" models support "Thunderbolt" as well).
Official dual display support and built-in iSight for easy video conferencing.
SD Card slot standard in all 21.5" and 27" models (the previous "Mid-2010" and current "Mid-2011" and "Late 2011" models support the more advanced SDXC standard as well).
    Reasonable value.
    Cons:
All-in-one design limits internal expansion. Apple provides no support for end-user upgrades beyond RAM.
The hard drive in 20" and 24" models is difficult to upgrade and even more difficult to upgrade in 21.5" and 27" models.
The processor, likewise, is difficult to upgrade yourself in all models and apparently blocked in others.
Glossy display in all models. Discontinued 20-Inch models have lower quality 6-bit displays with more limited viewing angle.
Keyboard design is polarizing -- some will like it, some will not.
Depending on the desired configuration, it may be less expensive to purchase an Intel-based Mac mini.
Limited legacy support -- uses "Rosetta," no support of MacOS 9/Classicapplications.
SD Card Slot on 21.5" and 27" models is placed awkwardly close to the optical drive slot on the right hand side, which makes it easy to mistakenly stick an SD Card in the optical drive.
Premium compared to generic "white box" PC
Macbook Pro is very helpful when you have a business and need to use it a lot on the go such as business, vacation and more. But the case is that MacBook Pro is a lot likely to get stolen if you leave it alone.
MacBook Pro 2012 is new and has better technology

  • Mac book pro don't recognize usb 3.0 devices after installing ntfs-3g

I have installed OS X Mavericks after deleting everything in the hard drive (i.e. complete new installation). It should work fine, nevertheless the problem persist, in my case my mac book pro doesn't recognize a nexus 4 conected to the USB port, but before installing the ntfs-3g software the mac book recgnized that device. So I don't know how to resolve this problem because it hadn't solved even doing a completely new installation of the OS X Mavericks.

I had a similar problem that arose because Apple over-rode the original USB drivers with a kernal extension.
UNloading the extension fixed my problems. Perhaps it will help you.
    In a terminal, type this:
    sudo kextunload -b com.apple.driver.AppleUSBFTDI
If it solves your problem, keep in mind you'll have to do it after every reboot (a good use for command line history.)
If it doesn't, you can put it right back with this:
    sudo kextload -b com.apple.driver.AppleUSBFTDI
Hope that helps. I should also warn you that in my experience, 10.9.3's USB performance is terrible.

  • Mac Book Pro 17" or Mac Pro?

Not sure which one is right for me. I am a photographer and graphic designer (print & web). I want to upgrade from my old iMac Power PC G5. Was thinking that I could get the Mac Book Pro with a separate display and use that for my retouching and InDesign files. That way I can also be mobile on photo shoots and use Capture One for tethered shooting. How can files be backed up by time machine on the MBP without an external hard drive? Is the MBP equal to the tower in capacity for hooking up external hardware such as drives or camera equipment? Is the MBP processor (2.66GHz Intel Core i7) as fast as the tower (Two 2.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Westmere” (8 cores)? Is 8MB of memory enough on the MBP? Please point out any other pros or cons for either computer to help me make a decision.
    Thanks!

    Hi cindy,
    cindy k wrote:

That would work, but there are distinct differences. Quite honestly, the MP is much more capable than the MBP for heavy duty work such as yours, but as you know, at the cost of portability.
How can files be backed up by time machine on the MBP without an external hard drive?
You could partition the internal HD, but that would not protect against several things: if the HD died, both the main partition and the TM backup are gone; if the unit is lost/stolen/damaged, same thing. It's almost putting all your eggs in one basket.
Is the MBP equal to the tower in capacity for hooking up external hardware such as drives or camera equipment?
No, the MP has more connections and bays and potential for expandability.
Is the MBP processor (2.66GHz Intel Core i7) as fast as the tower (Two 2.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Westmere” (8 cores)?
In MacTracker benchmarks, the i7 MBP benchmark is 5423, while the MP with two 2.4 Quads is 12942, so the MP is more than twice as fast.
Is 8MB of memory enough on the MBP?
Given the limitations stated above, 8GB of RAM should be sufficient.
Please point out any other pros or cons for either computer to help me make a decision.
You covered many of the salient points, but potential for expansion is a big one for some people, maybe someday adding a BR burner, adding multiple HDs, etc. I am not familiar with current MPs, but I suspect that given the huge speed advantage, it's going to handle the same tasks much, much faster without breaking a sweat, while the MBP is likely to run rather hot even while lagging far behind.
I think the big decision is speed and expansion vs portability. Good luck to you.
(Was just browsing the MP specs some more; wow, that is one serious machine!)

  • Mac Book Pro Price Drop

Who thinks that when the 17" mac book pro comes out, the curent 15.4" will go down in price. I know that no one really knows, but what do you think?
If it is now $2299 (Canadian Dollars), what would you guess it would come down to?
Personally I don't thaink that it will come down considering that it came out at the same price as the 15" powerbook. but then again, the 17" powerbook came down from about $4000 to $3000.
    Any Ideas?

I so far have had a terrible experience with Apple products. I switched from PCs to Macs. Even my Powerbook had a whine. Customer service is ridiculous. When I wanted to upgrade the hard drive, I had a horrid experience. No one knew how to get it done. Apple store guys here didn't even know that could be done. Let me not get started telling you about how arrogant these Apple folks are.
Upgrading anything is such a pain. Apple certainly doesn't believe in their customers' abilities or they know their products are not robust enough. You have to spend so much on getting upgrades done from these Apple techs who are supposed to be good at what they do. The Apple tech at Compusa where I took my Powerbook to, installed my hard drive and couldn't put it back well. The RAM was not properly put back, screws were switched all over. Oooff! Let me just stop before I get too annoyed and start cursing.
