Microsoft Access + Mac

I have a teacher who is asking if he can purchase Microsoft Office with Access for his Mac. Has anyone got an answer? Or, better yet, is there a Mac software that is comparable to Access or File Maker Pro but easier to use?
Just picking your brains. Thanks.

Hi Chris,
the Office for Mac package does not include Access http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/Office2008/default.mspx
FileMaker Pro is the quasi-standard database on Mac OSX.
OpenOffice http://www.openoffice.org/ contains a database app which might be worth a look.

Stefan

Running Windows or using a suite such as Libre Office. It is similar to Office 2007 for Windows, but runs on a Mac, and contains a database manage that is Access compatible.

How can I use Microsoft Access on my Mac Pro?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Microsoft Access isn't available for OS X, so you can't use it. If you need it, you have to install Windows on a virtual machine.
On a virtual machine, you can install the Windows version you most like and the Access version you need, so you won't have any problem using it. You just need a full Windows version with its DVD or ISO image and product key, and an application like Parallels, VMware Fusion or VirtualBox to create the virtual machine. If you want to save money, System Builder versions are cheaper and you can find them at Amazon or NewEgg.
As you have a Mac Pro, I suppose you won't have any problem using a 64-bit version, but it's important you have enough memory. Open  > About this Mac, and check how much memory you have. I recommend 4 or 8 GB of memory at least.
After installing Windows on the virtual machine, you will be able to install Access there.
There are applications for OS X that allow you to run Windows applications without having to install Windows. Those apps often fail, so I don't recommend you to use them

Restore from the backup you had prior to installing Mavericks.
However, the upgrade should not have altered your partition scheme. Did your erase and format the drive prior to upgrading?

  • How do I run microsoft Access 2010 on my mac book pro?

I own a mac book pro running OS X and I need to have microsoft word 2010, excel 2010, powerpoint 2010 and Access 2010 for an online computer course.  All of the Microsoft Office for Mac programs that I have seen do not include Access.  Is this correct?

  • Is there a version of Microsoft Access for the Mac computer

I was wondering if there was a version of Microsoft Access for the Mac computer.  Most of the databases I have on my old computer are in Access and I need to be able to open them on my new Mac Book.

Full Disclosure as per Apple Support Communities terms and Conditions: I am affiliated with the site linked to in this response.
Although Access for Mac isn't available, there are some apps which allow you to open Access databases on Mac. They don't allow you to access forms, reports and VBA modules but they do allow you to visualize the data. Although this isn't perfect, they're far easier and cheaper than having to install Windows on your Mac and then install Access if you only need to view Access databases.
Which one you use really depends on what you need to do. They can be summarized as:
MDDB ACB Viewer - Probably the best of the lot as it open both old and new Access files and exports to Apple Numbers
MDB Tool - Very simple to use but not for Access 2010+
MDB Explorer - Exports to SQLLite but requires an upgrade for Access 2007+ files
ACCDB MDB Explorer - Very limited editing of databases but supports multiple ACCDB databases
MDB Lite - Only works with Access 2003 files but very easy to use
Hope this helps as a basic overview of the main tools available but if you you can find a more in-depth look at Access for Mac software here.

Tryd to use FMPRO migration but had no luck. Id love to switch to a new mac book, but i run my business s/w in MS ACCESS.
    Thanks Joe

You can migrate all your data to Filemaker using
    http://www.fmpromigrator.com/
Or link Filemaker to ODBC with Actual Technologies ODBC plugin:

I spent a lot of time trying to find a solution before buying.  I did not try the launch terminal solution....
I will check back so I can find out what to do should this happen again.
More possible bad news.  If you had followed what fane_j had asked you to do you might have found out it wasn't microsoft's fault for your problem and wouldn't have had to spend $150.  Because while you may have an Office that works, fane_j was not suggesting a solution but probing for a trojan (google "flashback trojan") that has been crashing powerpc code which is what Office 2004 is.
So if you do have the trojan, while you can run a version of Office, the trojan may still be in your system since installing a version of Office isn't going to remove it.  So I'll make another request.  Launch Terminal (in your Utilities folder) and copy/paste the following line into the terminal window and hit return:
    defaults read ~/.MacOSX/environment
If you see anything other than a "does not exist" error message you almost certainly do have the trojan and post the results in this thread.
The choice is yours.  You can ignore this and take the risk.  Or do what has been requested.

  • Microsoft Access on a Mac

I’m look to buy a new laptop and I think I’m going to buy a Mac. I see that I can run Microsoft word and excel but can I run Microsoft Access on a Mac?

MacBig is correct... You can install Windows on a separate partition on the Mac's hard drive. You can then boot into Windows and install any of your PC software to use (including Access). I use Access on my MacBook Pro and it works perfect. I also use Flight Simulator X and it works great.
When you turn on your MacBook, you can choose to boot into Windows or Mac OS X. If you buy Parallel's software, you can boot into Mac OS X and then run Windows (and Access) in a separate window within your Mac operating system (have both operating systems running at the same time).

As Office for Mac doesn't include Access, I'm not at all sure you can.
You could try Open Office, NeoOffice or Libre Office (all free, open source) and see if their database applications can do it.

  • Can you run a program that uses Microsoft Access on a Mac?

    Hi,
I'm relatively new to Mac so pardon any ignorance...
I want to run a program called LTV on my Mac and it's based on Microsoft Access - I have installed the latest Microsoft for Mac on here and just realised for some reason it doesn't include Access - why not?
I tried to open LTV and it told me I should get the MDB extension from the app store. I did that, but the interface for the program is whack compared to what it looks like on a PC.
Any suggestions or background to this issue?
    Thanks.

You could always install Parallels and run Access under Windows?

  • Installing Microsoft Office:mac 2004 Student and Teacher Edition

I am trying to install Microsoft Office:mac 2004 student and teacher edition.
I don't know how to achieve this.
I have tried the Office Setup Assistant but it says "You can't open the application "Office Setup Assistant" because PowerPC applications are no longer supported.
So, I assume I have to do the "Drag the Microsoft Office 2004 folder to your hard disk to install all Office components" option.
Being very new to iMac, my question is, "Where exactly do I drag it to?  Which icon along the bottom or should it go somewhere else?
    Any help would be great
    Thanks

It will not work with Mountain Lion. You need Office 2011 for OS X.
Office 2004 and Other Applications Don't Work in Lion/Mountain Lion
If you have Office 2004 which is a PPC-only suite, it will not work in Lion/Mountain Lion. You need to upgrade to Office 2011 - Mactopia - or you can try the freeware suite, Libre Office, that is functionally similar to Office 2007 for Windows except it works on Lion/Mountain Lion.
You may want to consider as well:
These two suites are similar to Libre Office but not as current or as well-supported:
    NeoOffice
    Open Office
And, then there is Apple's iWork suite:
Pages - word processing and layout
    Keynote - presentation
    Numbers - spreadsheet
Each can open and save Office compatible files. They may be purchased separately via the Mac App Store for $19.99 each.
As for other software, any PPC-based software will not run in Lion or Mountain Lion because Rosetta is no longer part of OS X. You will need to upgrade to Intel versions of the software.
(Access to the Mac App Store requires Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or higher and an Apple ID.)

  • Appleworks Database vs. Microsoft Access

I currently manage my database on a PC with Microsoft Access. I would like to switch the data to my new iMac (1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo, OS 10.4). Can anyone tell me more about the database program in Appleworks? Can you customize the fields (to include more than just the basic name, address, etc fields) or are they pre-set? Also, can you create searches within the program (ie to find a record based on a last name)? I am trying to avoid buying FileMaker Pro because of it's higher cost. Any information and details about the program's capabilities would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

Yes, you can do all of those things: define fields including name, type..., and you can create/save searches on the database. To see examples of people doing these things do a search in Google using a phrase like:
    appleworks +database +tutorial
You're probably aware of this, but I'll mention it just in case: AppleWorks is no longer bundled with any Macs, and must be purchased separately.
Also, AppleWorks has a flat-file database. This is basically a single table of records. However, Access is a relational database and creates multiple tables of records which can be linked together using key fields. If your Access database is a relational database then you will have to redesign it work in AppleWorks. That is, collapse it all into one big table. If you're reasonably serious about databases, then you'll find FileMaker is a better choice. It is a relational database very similar to Access, and will create smaller more efficient databases than AppleWorks. NB There are other relational databases available on the Mac too. So search VersionTracker.com for the alternative products.
Lastly, AppleWorks will not open your Access database. You will have to save the data from the Access database into a tab-separated value text format so it can be imported into AppleWorks. Because you're saving the data into a text format you will not be able to use the screens you've created in Access, and will have to recreate them in AppleWorks.
