Microsoft Word crashes as soon is it is clicked on

Microsoft Word crashes as soon as I open it on one of our teachers' MacBooks running OS X 10.6.1.  It bounces in the dock for several seconds and the gives and error report.  The report can be seen below.  Any ideas?  Thanks in advance.

Hi all--this worked for me:
1. Uninstall Office using the Remove Office program.
2. Remove (trash) the microsoft folder from the fonts folder. Then delete the word plist from your user library preferences folder.
3. Run disk utility to repair permissions and restart.
4. Run Snow Leopard cache cleaner and do a deep clean on the cache of your system.
5. Run Easy Find to find "fontcachetool" (it's an invisiable file, so make sure you enable easyfind to locate invisible files. Trash the fontcachetool file once it's located. Note: I actually had two of these files, and I trashed them both.
6. Restart.
7. Run disk utility to repair permissions again, and restart.
8. Install Office 2008.
9. Do NOT open any Office programs, and restart.
10. Install SP 1 (note: I installed this from a disk image. My previous attempts to use the automatic check for updates "feature" in Office to download and install the program did not work--believe me, I uninstalled and reinstalled Office three times before performing the tasks I am listing here. You can download the disk images of the SP here:
SP 1 (12.1.0): http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=395D1487-A3A6-4106-A0F8 -4D6E1D6D89D2&displaylang=en
SP 2 (12.2.0): http://support.microsoft.com/kb/973254
Update 3 (12.2.1): http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.mspx?pid=Mactopia_Office2008&fid=9730452B -E6AD-4330-93E4-57F66293BF1C#viewer
11. Restart
12. Install 12.2.0. Restart.
13. Install 12.2.1. Restart
14. Repair permissions.
15. Restart.
So far so good. I hope this helps.

  • Microsoft word crashes when I open a file or try to save document

Every time I try to open an existing document or save a new one Microsoft word crashes.  I am able to start a new document but if I try to save it all of the action/editing buttons fade/unhighlight (save, print, quit, copy paste, etc) and I am ubable to do anything.  However, most of the buttons in view, history, bookmarks, tools, window & help still work.  Then I have to force quit because the option to quit is no longer available.
Please help.  I can no longer open & create new documents

Are you using Office 2004 and did you install the recent security update? If so then open Software Update and download and install the new security update version which should fix the issue.

  • Microsoft Word crashed. what to do?

Microsoft Word crashed. what to do?

It depends on whether or not Microsoft word crashes every time you open it.  If it only crashed one or two times force quit the program.  You can also command q the program.  Reopen the application and if it still does not work then uninstall the application completly.  You can back up any documents you have by putting them on an flash drive or an external drive.  Then reinstall the appliaction.  This would all be one way to do it but I do not neccesarly reccomend unistalling it becuase you might have to pay for the program again when you reinstall it.  If I were you I would download the new version of the program first before deleting the old one.  Then if you do have to pay for the download you can cancel it and find a better solution. Hope this works!

  • Microsoft Word Crashing in Notebook View?

I own a MacBook Pro, currently am using Mac OS X 10.5.8 (& will be updating to Snow Leopard soon..). I am a law student and use Microsoft Word on my Mac every day, specifically using the incredibly helpful "Notebook" layout in order to take down lectures & cases, and frequently, Word crashes, at very random & unspecific times, asks me to send a perfunctory crash report for their customer service and closes down, requiring me to save my work at a ridiculous rate because I never know when Word, in Notebook layout, will crash.
It is extremely frustrating because I don't use Word save for its Notebook layout, which is a godsend to me as a student and I do need it to work reliably. Can someone give me some help? I would appreciate any!
    Thank you so much!!!
As a corollary I understand some people here are serious experts, and I am quite new at this - I apologize if this has been posted somewhere else, but to the best of my knowledge a thread of this kind was not present anywhere else in the Discussions Forum. Thank you again for your help, I sincerely would appreciate if anyone would help me solve this interminable problem with MSWord - Notebook Layout.

    Hi,
Open Finder window and go to ...
    Home_Folder>Library>Preferences>com.microsoft.office.plist
Drag this file to the DESKTOP, don't trash it jet.
Now try again Microsoft Word in Notebook view.
If it stays stable than you can trash the file you drag on your desktop.
If Microsoft Word still crash on the Notebook view than drag the ...
    com.microsoft.preference.plist to the desktop.
If you do this than ALL you Preferences in Word will be gone.
Do you have a backup from the system or the Preferences Folder?

  • Microsoft Word crashes after upgrade to Mountain Lion

I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion on my 2011 Mac Mini.
Since the upgrade, microsoft word 2011 keeps crashing when trying to save a NEW document. It saves fine an existing document but would not save (or save as) a new document. I have also installed the latest software update from microsoft.
When I log into another user account it works fine, so it must be in my user's account.
Any idea on what to do ? the microsoft forum does not offer any help on this specific matter except changing user account !

I'm having this exact same issue too, and this is my third attempt to get things working again now :( what was weird was (before I also tried to start all over with a fresh win install) I were able to boot up the bootcamp install via VMware Fusion :S I've just did a startup repair with restore and it seems to have kicked some bad things out and lets me boot in again. I think I'll make a restore point and then install the driver one by one instead, and if things then blows up, I'm hopefully able to restore back.
But this issue is pretty pretty bad.

  • Microsoft word crashes on yosemite

    Hi,
I'm a student, currently using microsoft office for my thesis.
I upgraded the software to OS X Yosemite and I was trying to continue to work on my thesis using microsoft word.
However, this program keeps crashing few minutes after opening the document.
Is anyone experiencing the same problem?

I think I may have found a fix from one of the Yosemite beta testers who experienced the same problem (yes, both companies apparently knew about it before the launch!). It is simply a matter of taking the document out of full screen mode before closing it. I just did this with each open document, and did not get the error message. I will inform the group if it starts happening again.
You can find the beta discussion thread here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2011-macword/unable-to-clo se-ms-word-document/149dd908-b419-4418-949a-6f9657209edb?auth=1

  • Microsoft Word crashing/lag time switching between apps

My Microsoft Word suddenly started crashing constantly. Everything is up to date with both Word and Mac software. Now, I'm starting to experience a lag between trying to highlight a word—same delay is happening when I go between applications. I have OS X and Word 2008. Thoughts?

I have the exact same issue. Whenever I switch to another app via the Dock, cmd-Tab, or clicking on another window, after a few seconds iPhoto crashes with no errors in the log (just a crash log). I had iPhoto Library Manager rebuild the library of 12,000 photos which took most of a day and had to restart through several crashes. The rebuilt library worked, but isn't really acceptable since it changed all the key photos on my events, lost all my facebook albums and slideshows, and seemed to ignore a few days of recent organizing and labeling.
It seems like some idle process (detecting faces maybe) is kicking in whenever iPhoto goes in the background that causes it to crash when it's backgrounded and idle.
The thread that crashed in the crash log is pretty uninformative:

  • Microsoft Word crashes frequently, especially when saving

I "upgraded" to Mountain Lion about a month ago, and now Microsoft Word is extremely unstable. It crashes constantly, especially when I hit Save. I have to force quite the program and restart.
I have an iMac with this information:
    24-inch, Early 2009
Processor  2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)
I am running version 14.2.4 (120824) of Microsoft Word for Mac 2011.
I would be fine with getting rid of Mountain Lion if that will make Microsoft Word stable again. I rely on Word and it has become unusable on this computer.

Hello, truthfully that's way to much info to hunt through, might Open Console & copy/paste the clues when a crash actually happens.
    Other than that...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.

  • Microsoft Word crashes when Mac is coming out of sleep

On both Microsoft Word 2008 (and Excel) I get crashes whenever the Mac comes out of sleep mode or I unhook my extra monitors. This is on Yosemite, 10.10.2, but goes back for quite some time, and I am running on MBPro Retina 15" first gen. It seems like a rendering issue if the screen buffers get changed around in some way. Has anyone encountered this at all?

I used to have the same problem several OS points before and it suddenly stopped occurring. After the last update (10.4.9), it started happening again. Basically, when I close the laptop cover, it goes to sleep. WHen I open the cover, it occasionally remains with the screen black. I can't figure out the cause. I have reset the PMU, NVRAM.
The only other thing that I noticed is that the ENergy Saver preferences are no longer followed on my system. For example, I have the setting to 'sleep' at 15 minutes of idle. It never kicks into sleep by itself.
I am not sure if it has anything to do with the latest OS update. It may be a coincidence. Intuitively, I feel it is a hardware failure, but I am too lazy to test it out. I am waiting to get a new laptop, transfer my files and then wipe the hard drive clean with a fresh OS install to see if the problem persists.
ANyone else having the same problems?

  • Microsoft word crashing constantly

Hi, ever since the last software update my microsoft Word has been crashing constantly. I hate using Pages, and Word is just a better programme. When it works. Anybody experiencing same thing? Any ideas on how to make it stop crashing? I'm a student and it's really affecting my work.
    thanks!

I think, since you are not running lion which is likely not going to work with '08, that you would hopefully get the answer you need at the Office for Mac forums.

  • MICROSOFT WORD CRASHING SEVERAL TIMES A WEEK!!!

MICROSOFT WORD HAS BASICALLY BECOME A LIABILITY FOR ME.  It has consistently crashed several times a week (while working on a single word document and nothing else open but safari).  It sits there stuck for several minutes until I have no choice
but to force quit, and then I lose my work (despite several saves...i can't keep saving fast enough). I've had to re-do work on several documents over the course of the past 2 weeks---time which I cannot bill for.  PLEASE FIX THIS!!!

You should repost your problems with word in the more appropriate Office Community forums, here...

(moving the thread to the 'Where is the Forum for...?) forums as it's off-topic to WGA forums)

  • Microsoft Word crashes every time I open it.

I have a 2012 MacBook Pro using Mavericks and every time I try to open Word the program crashes. This is a very new (as in this morning) problem. Do I need to upgrade to Yosemite for Word to work again? I downloaded the Office software for free from my universities website as a student, and now that I'm not a student anymore I'm not sure how to reinstall the software. The image below is the screen I get as soon as I open Word.

The crash says you have Mavericks, not Yosemite.  10.9.5 is Mavericks, Yosemite is 10.10.
But you don't want to upgrade until you isolate the reason for the crash.  It looks like an incomplete installation of Microsoft Office.
You will need to find the original Office installer disc that installed Office on your machine.  If you never got one, contact the school, or look at these Office alternatives:

  • Microsoft Word Crashes - won't run at all

I know I should post this on some Word:Mac forum but I trust the knowledgebase here more!
Word 2004 on an Intel MacBook running 10.5.8 crashes every time.
I've deleted all Word preference files, identities, etc....didn't fix it.
I've validated all fonts and deleted all fonts with any errors....didn't fix it.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled the software several times.....didn't fix it.
I've run virus checking software and found files with Word viruses and cleaned them....didn't fix it.
    Help.

On another thread, someone with the same problem believed it was a corrupt dictionary. I turned off spelling and grammar checking and it has stopped crashing, but this is not an ideal solution.
The dictionary is tied to the user, because other users on the same computer aren't having the problem, but I don't know where Microsoft has hidden the dictionaries, or how to delete them.

  • Microsoft word crashes on close

Every time I try to close a Word document, the program crashes. I'm a new Mac user with a new Macbook Pro, and I've only had Yosemite. This happens whether I close just the document or close the program.
What's more annoying, every time I open Word, all the previous documents (that apparently never closed properly) open up again. I can save them, at least, so I can get work done. I was hoping the Microsoft update from a week or so ago would solve this, but it didn't. I have uninstalled and reinstalled. Same problem.
    Thanks,
    Rob

I think I may have found a fix from one of the Yosemite beta testers who experienced the same problem (yes, both companies apparently knew about it before the launch!). It is simply a matter of taking the document out of full screen mode before closing it. I just did this with each open document, and did not get the error message. I will inform the group if it starts happening again.
You can find the beta discussion thread here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2011-macword/unable-to-clo se-ms-word-document/149dd908-b419-4418-949a-6f9657209edb?auth=1
