MIDI/Audio setup

Hi everyone,
I hope someone can help me. I am struggling to understand how to record the output of my MIDI synth (MOTIF ES-8) into a track in Logic. I have the Martin Sitter videos and books, but he doesn't seem to address this particular (and probably very common) procedure.
I know there is an External Instrument plugin, but I understand the better way is the more traditional use of an Input, Aux, Buss etc.?
The problem is that I still don't get how to use these types of tracks to achieve my goal.
I would like to be able to record a MIDI track like normal. Then after I have my song ready, bounce the entire thing out to an audio file.
I would be grateful if anyone could tell me how to setup my Audio Objects to allow me to record MIDI as audio.
Regards,
Ken

Ken,
The thing that's necessary, is to get the Motif's
audio output into Logic.
So you would need to plug the audio outputs of the
Motif into 2 inputs of your audio interface.
This part is correct. I will say that.
Now this part,
Using an Input Object in Logic, you could then
monitor the Motif through the output object of
Logic.
Stereo Input Object 1-2 is inputs 1 and 2 from your
audio interface. Input Object 3-4 is inputs 3 and 4
of your interface...etc...
So now, when you are finished with your song, as long
as you bounce in Real time, the motif's output will
be visible to Logic's Output Object, and therefore be
included in the bounced audio file.
Hope that helps...
This is may or may not be correct. I personally have never
heard of this way of getting a keyboard sound into Logic.
That in itself means nothing since, there is much about
Logic I do not know. I am just going on what I learned
in the MacPro Video Enviroment series. In 47 lessons
on the enviroment, not once did they suggest this.
though they did mention what I am going to suggest,
that you create a mulit intstrument object in the enviroment
so that you can access all your keyboard sounds from
inside of Logic. This takes a little work, (in your case
very little) but when it's done it is easy to call up any
bank and patch. You can record to Logic in midi and
then it will be routed back to his keyboard automatically.
After running cables from his keyboard audio out to his
audio interface ins, he just sets up an audio track to record
the output of the keyboard. You can even skip recording
the midi if you just want to record audio from the ES.
Recording the midi first has definite advantages (easier to edit).
I even found a multi instrument environment layer with
documentation from Yamaha so you do not have to do the
hard part of setting up the 500+ names of the patches or
the tracks in the arrange window.Looks like this is your lucky day.
The environment LSO is here...
http://members.cox.net/fortunately4u/MOTIFES_SequencerKit.zip
I made a video tutorial on setting up a external multi
instrument in Logic. That can be found here....
http://www.easy-sharing.com/515936.html
You probably wont need the video but in case something
is not clear, you can refer to it.
I know this works since I did it for my Motif.

  • AUDIO SETUP ASSISTANT GONE

I noticed that I can no longer use the core audio setup assistant in express 8. In 7, I could adjust the amount of tracks, buses ect. They have apparently got rid of that feature in 8. So now I have 64 buses and instead of setting the record max time at around 15 minutes in 7, I now can record for over 400 minutes. That seems a bit overkill. Is there a way to cut this back to about 8 buses and 24 audio tracks and 16 midi and 16 instrument tracks in the setup? OR is adjusting those settings no longer available?

Those setup options are in System Preferences, under the Apple menu.

  • Getting GB started - Midi Audio error

I'm getting the -possible conflict, midi audio device- type error on starting GB. I've googled lots of ideas on fixing this but nothing has helped so far. I'm installing on a 933 G4 that has had Pro Tools HD installed, but is now thoroughly removed. And I've tried moving/removing anything else music/midi related but still to no avail, plus the usual repairing permissions etc.
Are there any reliable answers to this kind of problem. Any ideas welcome. Very keen to try out GB!

    Hello fellow Applelonians:
I see that a lot of you are having a problem opening Garageband. You may want to try these steps listed below.
1.Click Finder > Applications> Utilities. Click the Utilities to open it.
2.Go to the bottom of the directory and locate “Disk Utility” and double click it.
3.If you have more than 1 hard drive on your system, select the primary one or the disk that Garageband is loaded on.
    4.Now click “Verify Disk Permissions”.
5.Two messages should display and they are:
    - Verify permissions for Macintosh HD (or the name of your hard disk will display
    here...).
    - Permissions verification complete. The privileges have been verified or repaired
    on the selected volume.
6.Now this part is complete and for now minimize the size.
7.Go back to the Utilities directory (Step #1) and this time double click “Audio Midi Setup”.
8.The “Audio Midi Setup window opens.
    9.Verify the following:
    - System Settings:
Default Input is set as Built-in Audio
Default Output is set as Built-in Audio
System Output is set as Built-in Audio
    Properties For: Built-in Audio
    Clock Source: Internal Clock
Now go to the “Audio Input” section:
    Format: 44100.0Hz 2ch-16 bit
Move the Volume Slider to your personal preference.
Now go to the “Audio Output” section:
Source – this would be your own personal choice
    Format: 44100.0Hz 2ch-16 bit
    10. Now go to the top of the window and click the “Midi Devices” tab.
    11. Click “Audio” and a drop down option called “Open Aggregate Device Editor” should display.
    12.Open it.
13.Check boxes should display. Select all of them and then close the window.
    14.Now open Garageband.
Let me know if this worked for you. Now you should know that our setup is most likely more advanced then what you have, so your individual results may vary. Also, if this process doesn't work for you the first time and please don't panic! Go to the link below, download “Soundflower”, reboot and try the steps again.

  • Recommend midi/audio interface

I am just getting back into home recording and have the following setup:
    Mackie 1604VLZpro mixer
    Akai S5000
    Various keyboards
    Effects.
    Guitars
    Vocal mic
I want to purchase a suitable midi/audio interface to work with my G5 DP1.8 / OSX 10.3.9. I am thinking of buying Logic express or pro, haven’t decided yet.
Can anyone recommend a suitable interface that would work well with my setup.
Could the audio, guitars and vocals, be routed back through my mixer independently once recorded into logic?
    Cheers
    Rob

Check on the Alesis io14 or io26 -- I read all the forums and this one is coming up as the best, especially at the price. Also recommended by my pro audio guru friend (not a salesperson). I bought it and it worked immediately with my MacBook Pro.....for both audio and MIDI. It's in your price range, and believe me the io26, in particular, is a lot of high-end audio for the money. It's light, compact, but most of all it has some of the best components and construction you can buy.
The following link is to a Harmony Central pro review of the io26. Review is located at http://acapella.harmony-central.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1562285
It's a long thread, dating back to its introduction in March, 07, and there is some discussion of early problems with certain computers and sequencing software. If you read through the entire thread you'll see they were resolved and that the reviews are very, very positive---especially the pro audio review by the Harmony Central reviewer.

Hi i upgraded from lion to mountain lion to day on my mini mac,Since the upgrade i am no longer getting sound through my HDMI cable which was working fine on lion Checked the midi audio settings and system preferences to out on HDMi nothing no sound whats so ever.Any one any ideas?
I use a samsung TV for my monitor via HDMI.Tried all the system Audi setting nothing .Head phone and internal speakers are fine.

Similar issue; Audio was working fine on Lion, now not on Mountain Lion. Have a Macbook Pro early 2011 with AMD Radeon HD 6750M, connected by thunderbolt through a Lacie LBD to a mini-displayport to HDMI adapter (n.b. same problem when not going through the LBD) to a Pioneer VSX 521 AV receiver. For me when I go into audio Midi settings all the volume sliders for the displayport device are greyed out and at zero. But when I click 'configure speakers', it's able to send out the test signals to each speaker. Part of the problem could be that I'm not getting the option to put out 6channel sound, only 2 or 8 channel. Since my system is Dolby 5.1, and I only have 6 speakers, I would have expected the 6ch option to be available. But I imagine there's more to it than that. Elsewhere someone has suggested playing with Remote Interactive over HD on an Onkyo device; I'll see if there's something similar on the Pioneer that can be changed. Any other suggestions welcome.

Check your connections.  I had the same problem where my side speakers didn't work in 5.1 but did in 7.1, leaving me with two more nonexistent surround speakers.  I had the speakers plugged in incorrectly.  You might not be as slow as me however it doesn't hurt to make sure.

My midi/audio interface ( Edirol PCR1) will not interface with Yosemite 10.10 and Roland have no driver update, is there any fix for the problem or is the end of the line for this device.

Same problem here, what a shame as this has been my favorite portable keyboard for ages. Whenever I see one in a store(very rarely) I'll grab it.

  • [SOLVED] Audio setup troubles with usb headphones and built-in sound

    Hello,
I Just started using Arch about a month ago after going through many Debian and Ubuntu variants.  After all my frustrations with apt pinning to get working 10bit video playback, only to have everything else uninstalled by crappy dependency checking, I am extremely happy with how easy it was in Arch.
Now I am having difficulties perfecting my audio setup.  Almost everything else is set up to satisfactory levels but I have yet to bring the sound to the same standard.  With just ALSA my built in audio works, but defaults to the unused hdmi on my nvidia graphics.  I have managed to get it to switch at some point but with ALSA alone I could never get my usb headset to work at all.
By using pulseaudio as well I was able to get simutaneous playback, which is ideal, but had choppiness and other issues with just the usb headset.  I followed some instructions found on the arch wiki and other places on the net for choppiness in both ALSA and pulse and tried the fixes listed in various combinations.  I ended up with outcomes such as pulse not starting, no sound at all, creepy ticking in usb and perfect sound on speakers, and my current situation of perfect sound on speaker and acceptable but tinny sound on usb which degrades over time requiring restart.
Is anyone able to give any advice or point me to any guides I may have overlooked?
Setting up sound from scratch is something I have never done before coming to Arch, so I don't know what commands are useful for audio specifically, but learning is one of the reasons I decided on Arch. As for commands I do know, lspci and lsusb, relevant entries are as follows:
    spricc ~ $ lspci | grep Audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 05)
01:00.1 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation GF104 High Definition Audio Controller (rev a1)
Bus 004 Device 003: ID 1532:000e Razer USA, Ltd
USB device is a Razer Megalodon headset, NVIDIA Audio is of no interest to me, unless it is not what i think it is.
Thanks to anyone who takes the time to read this.

  • WiFi MIDI network setup is terribly slow

    Hi all
    What i have:
    1. macmini (late 2012)
    2. ipad 4
What i need - i need to create WiFi MIDI network for some music creation process.
    The problem:
When i open MIDI Studio window and then click on Network - is nothing happened. But MIDI Studio is no responsive. ( i see color-wheel cursor)
    This is long-long-long time.
Then it open window where i can setup network. I press connect to iRom (it my iPad) and waiting again. 5 or 12 seconds before it connect..
    The question:
How can i do that process faster as possible ? Why MIDI Studio all times try to find something.
This is the same iPad and Same macmini all times when i run that. But all times it waiting something, and i waiting also.
How can i speed up that? May be this is WiFi problem and i need some cable?
    Thanks!

    Is problem partially solved:
This is occur because OSX have a two connections in one time:
    1. - wired Ethernet connected to router
    2. - WiFi for connecting to iPad
When i disable Ethernet - the MIDI Network setup work really fast.
But now i have another question: How i can use both Ethernet + WiFi, without this terribly stuck ?

  • Problems with MOTU Audio Setup and Mavericks.

    Hi!
after installing the latest update of MOTU Audio Drivers (v1.6.59200 | Nov. 12, 2013) for some sessions Motu Audio Setup has worked correctly.
Now, after a week or so, it detects the interfaces (by the way a 828vMk II + 8pre, both FW) when I power them, so it fires up as usual; but when launched is not showing any device connected.
I tried to thrash the Audio Devices preference panels, but no result.
Shall I wait for a new MOTU update or is there any other workaround I could try?
    Thanks in advance for help
    Massimo

I had the same problem. The fix after multiple configurations is as follows.
    1) Reset the PRAM and shutdown - this will clear the FW settings
    2) Boot the systems but with on ONE Motu828 powered on.
    3) After the system is up and you can see the one device - power the second device on it the Motu Audio Setup program should see both.
there is some kind of FW race problem. Also, go to preference, turn OFF IPV4 stack from the FW device in NW setting. If I do not do this, I cannot get the system to see the devices and it basically is in some sort of "hung" state.

I also have the radio version of the same game in mp3 format with different announcers for the game. I would like to overlay the radio audio with the television video and keep everything in sync.
    1. What would be a good workflow to achieve this? Can this be done in Premiere or Encore?
    2. I would like to give the viewer the option to watch the game using the TV audio or radio audio. Similiar to a dvd movie with English or Spanish versions. How can i set up a menu option for this in Encore.

  • Audio midi network setup wrong interface

I am having difficulty establishing a wireless MIDI connection between my Macbook Pro (10.8) and my iPad.
When I open the Audio MIDI setup application and go to MIDI Studio and click Network, it detects my iPad, and I can supposedly connect to it, but nothing works. I look at the address which says:
    host-12:5006
    10.211.55.2:5006
    10.37.129.2:5006
However, both devices are on a network starting with 128.237....
When I run ipconfig, i see that these two adresses are coming from vnic0 and vnic1 which I traced back to Parallels.app--they are virtual interface devices for running windows, etc.
Basically, I get the feeling that Audio MIDI setup.app isn't getting the right ip addresses to function.
Or am I completely misunderstanding something here?
    Thanks

You can disable all the Parallels services temporarily by typing the following in Utilities/Terminal.app. It will ask for the root password.
      sudo launchctl stop com.parallels.desktop.launchdaemon
    To enable it again, enter:
      sudo launchctl start com.parallels.desktop.launchdaemon
The background services must be running for Parallels to run so remember they are back on when you're done with your audio session.

  • Network Midi-Audio Midi Setup

I am setting up a second mac to be a Kontakt streaming sample playback machine. I have it working with normal midi, but just set it up last night, after some trial and error, to connect with the Network Midi driver that comes with Tiger. Seems to be working very well, and latency is hardly noticable at all. What I can't figure out (and am asking for help on) is how to set it so that Logic will see more than sixteen channels to it. Kontakt can handle 64 channels, but multi instruments seem to be sixteen in Logic. Any thoughts?

    I did that too :
You create 4 sessions in AMS in each MAC
Each sessions are seen in Logic and in K2 as a midi port
then you connect the 4 sessions (it's a pity that is not saved)
then in K2 you define you want to use the 4 sessions/midi ports
midi channel 1-16 will use the 1st session (A) 17-32 the second (B).... (check it on each K2's slot)
the problem is that you are limited to load 2 GB in K2
