Migrate a Single node clustered SharePoint 2010 farm to an un-clustered single node SQL VM (VMware)

Silly as it sounds, yes, we have a SQL2008r2 Clustered SharePoint farm with only one node. We did intend to have 2 nodes but due to costs and other projects taking priority it was left as is.
So our current setup is an SQL cluster (1 node), 2 App servers (VM’s) and 2 Web servers (VM’s)
We have decided to virtualise the Database server (to be SQL2008r2 un-clustered) to take advantage of VMware H/A etc.
I’ve had a look around and seen the option to use SQL aliases but I’m not sure that’s the best option. I was thinking of rebuilding the DB server but was wondering if there is any other options
Has anyone done this before? Any tips/advice to migrate or otherwise get the SQL DB virtualised would be greatly received.

Hi, yes that's correct, but my query really is about the SharePoint side with regard to SharePoint and maybe using SQL aliases.
My current setup is
shareclus
= cluster (1 node – sharedb (SharePoint database server))
shareapp1
 = application server (LB)
shareapp2
=  application server (LB)
shareweb1  =  WFE (LB)
shareweb2  = WFE (LB)
and would like to go to
sharedb01vm = SharePoint Database server
shareapp1
 = application server (LB)
shareapp2
=  application server (LB)
shareweb1  =  WFE (LB)
shareweb2  = WFE (LB)
So at the moment the database is referenced in CA as shareclus. If I break the cluster, shareclus will not exist so I don’t think I will be able to use aliases(?) but I’m not sure.
Can anyone help?

  • Random users receive an unexpected error when trying to access SharePoint 2010 farm.

Over the past few months we had occasions where established users trying to connect to my production SharePoint 2010 farm receive a correlation error page when trying to access the farm. I have two WFEs load balanced and the errors show up on either so it
doesn't happen on just on or the other. Specifically today it was three users in one office  out of about 15 that were affected the rest were able to access the farm without any problems and there were no other reports from other offices. Each time the
user can eventually get in without any outside intervention it just seems to fix itself after a few hours. Each time it happens I search the logs for the CorrelationID(s) and everytime I see the same set of errors in the ULS logs. I also go check the Windows
Security logs to make sure they connected to the server okay. I've confirmed that the Web App's PortalSuperUserAccount and PortalSuperReaderAccount are both set correctly. Just looking to see if anyone has experienced this and figured what was happening and
    how to fix it.

  • Added a content database from Company A's SharePoint 2010 farm to ours

I have added a content database from a company (Company A) that we are acquiring. The sent it my SFTP, we downloaded it, added it to the sql db, and I added it as a content database to a SharePoint 2010 farm  at our company (Company B) that is built
to the exact build that Company A's farm was built to.
Presently, the database resides in our Development Environment which is a single server that interacts with SQL, which resides on a different server.
If I copy the URL for the site collections from the Company A's DB (from the site collection list), the content renders perfectly, but  when I attached the database to a Web application that was tied to a host header with an IP address on the DNS Server
here, at company B, the content doesn't render at all. The only thing that happens is that I am asked to enter my credentials. None of the farm credentials or my credentials (all domain users) work.
I have made myself via the farm administration password the owner of the site content, but I must be missing something, because I get this error from the page when I try to render it:
<b>Error message 401.2.: </b> Unauthorized; Logon failed due to server configuration. &nbsp; Verify that you have permission to view this directory or page based on the credentials you supplied and the authenticatio methods enabled
    on the web server.
I am wondering if this has something to do with the origin of the content, due to the fact that it was created on a different farm under completely different credentials and what I have to do to get it to work outside of the server as content
    under a new Web app.

    Hi,
    Do you have any update?

  • What are the steps to change existing sharepoint 2010 farm database server to a new server

    Hi
i have a sharepoint 2010 farm and backend with sqlserver2012 standard edition on windows server 2008 r2 server
now what are the steps to if  want to  connect this farm to a new sql server 2012 on windows server 2012 server and remove this existing server
    adil

    You have two options:
Use a SQL Alias and you will then need to swing all databases over to the new SQL Server
Don't use a SQL Alias and swing all but the Configuration and Administration databases to the new SQL Server, and individually re-configure Service Applications/Web Applications to use the new SQL Server. This will force you to keep the old SQL Server around.

  • Sharepoint 2010 farm full backup

I do full backup to sharepoint 2010 farm, in logs write
Estimated disk space required: 94,251 MB.
    Backup
    Backup Method: Full
    Top Component:
    Configuration only: False
    Progress updated: 5
    Backup threads created: 10
at the start of the backup is the approximate size of
94,251 MB (about 92.05 GB), and in the end
    all backup files weigh
19 GB. At the start and at the end of
    all sizes backup files
    do not match. Why?

When you take backup, it require double size of the backup which is actually there, after this the compression happens.

  • Cloning SharePoint 2010 farm with everything same

    Hi,
I have one SharePoint 2010 farm running live with SQL server 2008 R2. SharePoint is in one server, Active Directory is in one server and SQL database is in another server. I am creating a clone of the existing SP farm.
I have created a private network where all 3 clone servers are connected (SP, SQL and AD). Before that, I have updated windows server 2008 R2 with latest updates and service packs. I have prepared the AD server, SQL database server and SP server within the
private network with same name, same IP address and everything same as my production server where production server is live. I have installed SP and connected with SQL database and AD with only the configuration database i.e only Central Administration is
    running now.
Now I am wondering what will be the next procedure to-
    1. Install Nintex Workflow, MS Office Webapps and other related software in SP server and update all with latest packs.
    2. How to deploy the SSL certificates.
    3. How to restore the farm database.
    4. How to update SP with latest packs OR any other issues may arise during this process.
Because, i want to keep my production server live while I prepare the clone environment.
    Please give some advice.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
I have restored the farm backup and trying to access my web applications. I have two web applications one is Extranet and another is Intranet with SSL.
    When I request for Intranet:-
It asks which authentication I want and display a drop down list where only Windows Authentication is there; there is no login prompt for AD users.
    When I request for Extranet:-
It shows An unexpected error occured.
I get the following error in the event log-

  • Migrate a Single node clustered SQL SharePoint 2010 farm to an un-clustered single node SQL VM (VMware)

Silly as it sounds, we have a SQL2008r2 Clustered SharePoint farm with only one node. We did intend to have 2 nodes but due to costs and other projects taking priority it was left as is.
We have decided to virtualise the Database server (to be SQL2008r2 un-clustered) to take advantage of VMware H/A etc.
    Our current setup is
        shareclus
= cluster (1 node – sharedb (SharePoint database server))
        shareapp1
    = application server (LB)
        shareapp2
    =  application server (LB)
        shareweb1  =  WFE (LB)
        shareweb2  = WFE (LB)
and would like to go to
        sharedb01vm = SharePoint Database server
        shareapp1
    = application server (LB)
        shareapp2
    =  application server (LB)
        shareweb1  =  WFE (LB)
        shareweb2  = WFE (LB)
So at the moment the database is referenced in Central Addministration as shareclus. If I break the cluster, shareclus will not exist so I don’t think I will be able to use aliases(?) but I’m not sure.
Can anyone help? Has anyone done this before? Any tips/advice to migrate or otherwise get the SQL DB virtualised would be greatly received.

I havent done this specifically with sharepoint, but I dont think it will be any different.
Basically you build the new VM with the name sharedb01vm. Now when you are doing the cut-over, ie when you are basically moving all the databases, you rename the servers.. ie the new VM will be renamed as Shareclus and the old cluster can be named anything
    you like .
At this point the sharepoint server should point to the new VM where you have already migrated the db's.
Another option is to create a Alias in the sharepoint server "shareclus" to point to sharedb01vm.
I have seen both of this in different environments but I bascially dont prefer the Alias option as it creates confusion to people who dont know this.

  • Sharepoint 2010 farm Sql cluster

    hello,
i have sharepoint farm with 3 server ( Web front , Sql , search server )
can i make sql cluster to sql with 3 sql server or it be must before begin install sharepoint farm
    thanks
    Nour

Your question isn't very clear but i think i understand.
You have an existing farm with a single SQL server.
You want to upgrade your single SQL server to a clustered SQL installation.
Doing so is not easy, you can't upgrade a single server SQL install to a clustered install as far as I know. You'd need to re-build the SQL server as a single node cluster and add the new servers to make the full cluster before moving the SharePoint databases
    over.
In addition you'd need to use SQL Aliases to point to the new clustered SQL address. If you've already used them then that's great, if not you'd need to use the old, single server, address as the Alias address and point it to the cluster.
In short: You can do it later but it's quite tricky and best done before you install SharePoint.

  • Data Migration from MOSS 2007 to SharePoint 2010

    Hi,
We have done a migration project for one of our client.
This migration was done from MOSS 2007 to SharePoint Enterprise Server 2010.
After the migration was completed we developed lot of new webparts, lists ,application pages in this newly migrated farm in SharePoint Enterprise Server 2010.
However the entire project took around 1 year due to some unavoidable delays. During this one year our client was using MOSS 2007 sites for there work. hence the data in MOSS 2007 farm/sites was continuously updated.
Our client needs to go live in next month and also needs the sites/lists/libraries which are migrated in new SP 2010 farm to be updated as per the MOSS 2007 farm.
Kindly suggest best possible way to achieve this data migration since last 1 year from MOSS 2007 to newly migrated SharePoint Enterprise Server 2010 farm.
Kindly note we have done lot of customization and new developments in newly created SP 2010 farm.
    Thanks and regards,
    Amien

    Hi there,
If you have already taken care of customization on SP2010 server. Then use any of the migration tools available in market to migrate data to target SP server.
Content Matrix gives free 25 GB to migrate your SharePoint data (https://www.metalogix.com/Resources/Promotions/Content-Matrix-Migration-Express-Download.aspx).
If you don't know what is changed in last 1 year, then best thing to do is add new content database and migrate your data into it.
    Hope that helps.

  • Losing out custom metadata info of few documents of a document librarby when migrated from MOSS 2007 to Sharepoint 2010

We have recently migrated from moss2007 to sharepoint 2010.We have a document library containing large no. of documents in it  & for those documents there are some custom metadata columns apart from OOB library columns . We have user content DB attach
migration and after that we can see blank value under the custom columns for some records. However interesting point is we can see this metadata is showing for few documents.
    Please suggest.

    Hi,
What is your Office edition? When we create a managed metadata column in a Document Library, it will prompt that ‘Earlier versions of client programs might not support this type of column’. You should use Office 2010 to edit and create a document then save
    to document library .
For detailed information ,please refer to this article:

  • Termstore changes are not getting reflected in the list items in SharePoint 2010 farm environment

    Hi,
I had created managed metadata with termstores from central admin. Then I had created one list in which added a column of type managed metadata using the managed metadata which I had created. And also added few list items to this list.
The problem is that after updating a termstore the changes are not reflecting in the list items which were added before the update.
I have referred the following links:
    http://www.paulgrimley.com/2011/02/managed-metadata-changes-not-applied-to.html
    http://davidfrette.wordpress.com/2010/05/26/taxonomy-update-scheduler%C2%A0timer%C2%A0job/
According to the links we need to run Taxonomy Update Scheduler on the server for updated termstore to get reflected. After running
this scheduler on development environment changes are getting reflected but not working on the production environment.
    Kindly help!
    Regards, Shruti

You should check the obvious.  You made the change in dev, but did you make the change in production too?  And, is the term you updated, actually the one that you are looking at in the list item?
There is not much, if anything, that can go wrong with that timer job. so I'd guess that the term you are looking at is not the one you think you are updating.
If you have double checked everything (the term is is in fact the same term id), then you may have something erroring in the update process.  In this case, you should check the ULS logs for any errors.

  • SharePoint 2007 Migration SharePoint 2010 Documents Broken Link Issue

    Hello All,
I'm in the process of doing a SharePoint migration from 2K7 to 2010 (different platform).  In SP 2K7 I have several thousands of documents. I have approx. 5K documents with anywhere from 1 to several links (http, https) that
will break after the migration.   Are there any Best Practices to deal with this issue?  Any information at all!!!
    Thanks

    Hi,
There are a lot of resources out there for migrating from MOSS 2007 to SharePoint server 2010. You need to have at least SP2 for MOSS 2007 installed on your WFE server. After that you can check the status of your farm running
    stsadm -o preupgradecheck.
I have published a checklist for migration, check it out:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/checklist-for-migrating-from-sharepoint-2007-to-sharepoint-2010.aspx
This technet link provide you with a comprehensive guide:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc303420.aspx
The best approach is to set up a separate SharePoint 2010 farm and the perform a database attach migration. You simply take a backup of your content database and the restore it to your new SQL server, then attach it to a web application you have created.
See the checklist I have provided above.

  • What needs to be done to rebuild a current Sharepoint 2010 Server farm to work as a Sharepoint 2013 Server farm?

    Hello Community
Currently I have a Sharepoint 2010 Server farm.
One server contains the database and DNS server
because it is the the domain controller.
The other server Contains the Sharepoint 2010 Server software
and is the the application server where applications such as Metadata,
UPs, etc, reside (including web applications with sites built with the UI).
Now I am going to change to Sharepoint 2013 Server because currently
there is no newer version of Sharepoint available.
I am ready to rebuild the current Sharepoint 2010 farm configuration into
a Sharepoint 2013 Server farm from scratch.
The question  is what do needs to be added and\or changed to make the current
Sharepoint 2010 Server farm configuration work as a Sharepoint 2013 Server farm?
        Thank you
        Shabeaut

There is no direct in-place uprade method for SharePoint 2010 to 2013. You need to create a new SharePoint 2013 farm from scratch and attach service and content databases to upgrade them. Check out Upgrade
to SharePoint 2013 for more information about the process.
If you have another server, you would install SharePoint 2013 on this. If you don't, you'll need to remove SharePoint 2010 from your existing server and then install SharePoint 2013. Check out Hardware
and software requirements for SharePoint 2013 before starting to make sure your server meets the minimum requirements for SharePoint 2013:
Web server or application server in a three-tier farm
Pilot, user acceptance test, or production deployment of SharePoint Server 2013 or SharePoint Foundation 2013.
    12 GB memory
    64-bit, 4 processor cores
    80 GB for system drive
