Migrate from whs11: how do non-domain backups work?

Hello, I'm looking at moving from whs11 to wse12r2. The main question I have is how do I handle backups for non-domain joined machines. Is this supported/seamless?
Thanks.

Hi,
Do you mean that you want to migrate the backup saved on whs11 to wse12r2 and the backup can still be restored by the wse12r2? If so, you cannot use the backup because System State Recovery is only supported on the same operating system instance. It is not
supported on a reinstalled operating system on the same or different hardware.
For more detailed information, please refer to the article below:

  • New iMac, migrated from macbook and now mail won't work. Tried re-installing operating system, still doesn't work. Can anyone help me to get mail working? thanks

I just bought a new iMac and I thought that it would be simple to migrate from my MacBook.
I have a time machine back-up so I decided to migrate using that. Everything seemed to instal pretty well with the exception of mail.  To begin with I had 2 mail icons, then I started to read some forums and checked that i had the one I wanted in the applications folder, deleted the other and then downloaded the new operating system.  Mail had to be force quit first and even when the download was complete Mail still wouldn't open or run. The only thing I can do is compose a new message, but I can't see my inbox at all.
It's really frustrating and I would love to know in a simple step by step guide how to get mail up and running with my existing migrated emails in it.
If anyone can give me some advice that would be great.
    thanks in advance.

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    First, empty the Trash.
Triple-click the line below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 -o -acl \) 2> /dev/null | wc -l
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
The output of this command, on a line directly below what you entered, will be a number such as "41." Please post it in a reply.

  • Migration from PC Vista to Macbook Air not working

When I try to migrate following the instructions I've read and using the Ethernet adapter I bought yesterday, I get into a vicious password request cycle on my Macbook. It doesn't seem to like either my account password or my MacBook password and asks me to reset my password. I did the reset, but it didn't like that either. Fortunately, my original pw still works. Are there some simple migrations for Dummies instructions somewhere that don't require me to know all the Apple vocabulary?

    Hi kimbakar,
I'm not sure which instructions you've read for how to migrate, but there are several articles that may help.  Check them out.

  • Migration from Sky to BT Infinity has it worked fo...

Losing the will to carry on...
Put order in beginning of may, initially given date of 22nd May, had many many changes of date every few days, lots of letters from BT and Sky confirming new date. Currently sposed to be 17th June as long as that lasts.
I have phoned a number of times to get assurances that it will be migrated on the date they said, no reasons why not, no problems with the order, the next day the dates move despite that, I have complained twice and got the same poor response of everything checks out.. this seems to be a theme on the forums, should i just cancel or will it one day move successfully
Its the worst customer experience I have ever received and I have a feeling its going to get worse.. what bugs me most is lack of a coherent explanation why!!
I had the same poor experience when cancelling BT Sport and I was told I wouldnt have to pay the 15 quid again to resubscribe which was a lie, a complaint didnt lead to any resolution just a confirmation that my previous order was cancelled and they couldnt do anything.. in fact as I write this I wonder why I am bothering considering a move to such a crackpot company....

  • How does iCloud app backup work?

So I am backing up my app data to icloud. Two questions. One, if I delete an app, will I be able to retrieve the app data from icloud and resume my game with the same progress? Two, how often does my ipad back up the app data, and does it do it on its own?
    Thanks!
    -24

iCloud does not back up the apps themselves. You can always re-download any app from the App Store (as long as it remains available there which is why I recommend keeping a copy in iTunes on your computer). Some apps safe progress to iCloud, some save to other systems. Check with the developer of the apps you use to find out what your options are.

  • Can someone tell me how licensing of Domain Controllers work?

I am still a little new with the licensing of certain things.
I know about Cals and the concurrent sessions but does this apply to domain controllers?
I thought i would just need a single license for the
Server 2012 install promoted to DC
There will be nothing hosted on this box except AD, DNS and DHCP.
Do i need a CAL for every computer in the AD domain?, for every user? both? what?
There are close to 200 computers in our little domain, so do i need 200 cals because all they are doing is that will authenticate against the domain controller?
or what, how does this work? I haven't been able to get a straight answer looking around online since DC's are kinda special cases.
Chaos causes progress, Order inhibits it.

There are 200 client OS like Win 7 and Windows 8, correct ?
You need not have licenses for those on DC/server. You just need licenses for Win 7/8 and activate them.
On server you need license as per the config, until unless you are hosting VM machines/servers.

  • Cannot link to PDX from PDF, how do I make it work?

I have created a PDf file with a link box and used the box properties to link to a PDX index.  This works as expected on the machine where the links are created under Acrobat 9 Pro extended.  When I copy the directory structure to another system with Acrobat Reader installed I get the no file assocation error for the PDX file.  I have tried 2 different XP Pro SP3 systems, a Windows 7 system, Acrobat 8.x and 9.3.0, and "repair Acrobat installation" on systems with the same results.     Links in the document to pdf files work and are portable, it is just the link to the PDX that breaks.  I can open and start Acrobat Reader by double clicking on the PDX file.
It has been claimed that this was fixed in Acrobat Reader 9.3.0.  The system creating the document is a Windows 7 64 bit system with Acrobat 9.3.0 Pro Extended, the readers are on 32 bit systems.
I think this has something to do with the Acrobat document not the software. Does any one have any idea how to debug this and get it to work?
    Thank you for your help.

To access the desired PDX file you are opening a PDF where you are trying to link to the PDX.
Instead, use the designed feature provided within Acrobat.
Go into the PDF's Document Properties. Select the Advanced tab.
In the dialog's first (top) pane, for "Search Index", use the Browse button. Locate and select the desired PDX.
Close the Document Properties dialog. Save the PDF.
Now, when the PDF is opened the Catalog index is automatically mounted and available for Search.
As Bill@VT mentioned, the relative locations of all files and Catalog indices must be maintained when relocating to another location.
    Be well...

  • ActiveSync stops working after migrating from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2013

We have started the migration from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2013. We've followed best practices and everything is working great except ActiveSync. I've performed Exchange migrations in the past so this is nothing new for me. I've also been referring to
a great guide which has been a big help,
    http://www.msexchange.org/articles-tutorials/exchange-server-2013/migration-deployment/planning-and-migrating-small-organization-exchange-2007-2013-part1.html.
Once a user is migrated from Exchange 2007 to 2013, ActiveSync stops working properly. Email can be pulled to the device (Nokia Lumia 625 running Windows Phone 8) by performing a manual sync. But DirectPush is not working. The strange part is it's not affecting
everyone who's been migrated. Anyone who is still on Exchange 2007 is not affected.
At first I thought it was our wildcard certificate. 99% of our users are running Outlook 2013 on Windows 7 or higher but we do have a few terminal servers still running Outlook 2010. Outlook 2010 was giving us certificate errors. I realized it was the wildcard
certificate. Rather than making changes to the OutlookProvider I simply obtained a new SAN certificate. Although that resolved the issues for Outlook 2010 users, ActiveSync was still a problem.
Rebooting the phones and removing the email account from the user's device and re-adding it didn't resolve the issue either.
Then I performed an iisreset on the CAS server. This didn't help either. I didn't know it at the time, but I was getting closer...
I tried using the cmdlet Test-ActiveSyncConnectivity but it gave me the following error:
WARNING: Test user 'extest_0d9a45b025374' isn't accessible, so this cmdlet won't be able to test Client Access server
    connectivity.
Could not find or sign in with user DOMAIN.com\extest_0d9a45b025374. If this task is being run without
credentials, sign in as a Domain Administrator, and then run Scripts\new-TestCasConnectivityUser.ps1 to verify that
the user exists on Mailbox server EX02.DOMAIN.COM
I started reviewing how Exchange 2013 proxied information from the CAS to the mailbox server and realized the issue may in fact be on the mailbox server.
I performed an iisreset on the mailbox server and all of a sudden ActiveSync started working again. Awesome!
I can't explain why. The only thing I can assume is when some users were migrated from 2007 to 2013 something wasn't being triggered on the Exchange 2013 side. Resetting IIS resolved the issue. I guess I'll have to do an IIS reset after I perform a batch
of migrations. Disabling ActiveSync and re-enabling it for the affected users didn't help - only the IISRESET resolved the issue.
If anyone has any information as to why this happens, please chime in. Also, if anyone knows why I can't run the Test-ActiveSyncConnectivity cmdlet, I'd appreciate the help.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
In Exchange 2013, the Public Folder is changed to Public Folder mailbox instead of Public Folder in Exchange 2007 database.
Due to the changes in how public folders are stored, legacy Exchange mailboxes are unable to access the public folder hierarchy on Exchange 2013 servers. However, user mailboxes on Exchange 2013 servers or Exchange Online can connect to legacy
public folders. Exchange 2013 public folders and legacy public folders can’t exist in your Exchange organization simultaneously. This effectively means that
    there’s no coexistence between versions.
For this reason, it’s recommended that prior to migrating your public folders, you should
first migrate your all legacy mailboxes to Exchange 2013. For more information about migrating public folder from previous versions, please refer to:

  • Migrating from '04 imac (G4, Tiger 10.4.11, 1Gmem) to new iMac '09

I can't get the two migration assistants to connect since they get stuck in an infinite loop. I saw in one post about upgrading the OS on the iMac but I don't even think I can b/c it's so old. What other options do I have for using the migration assistant.

do both imacs have firewire ports? i think they should, although the old one may only have firewire 400. the new one has Firewire 800 only, I just checked. connect them by an appropriate firewire cable and boot the old mac in target mode (reboot it and hold "t" at the chime". then it will show up as an external drive on the new imac and you can migrate using migration assistant wuth the option to migrate from another hard drive or TM backup.

  • How to request certificate from a non-domain computer

We using a Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise CA to issuing webserver-certificates (SSL). The CA-Server is a member of a AD-Domain and online. Now we want to request certificates from computers like Windows Server 2008 R2 or Linux Server which aren't member
    of the domain.
How we can request certificates automatically with a script remote from these Windows Servers, for example ? Is it possible to use  the "Certificate Enrollment Web Service" without the "Certificate Enrollment Policy Web Service" ?
Is it possible to use certreq in this scenario ?
    Thanks for your help.

Now I have found a solution. Shortly I want describe the way:
    Prerequirements:
    1. ADCS Enterprise Certification Authority is installed
    2. ADCS Certificate Enrollment Web Service is installed on a server
    3. ADCS Certificate Enrollment Policy Web Service is installed on an other server
    Steps to do:
    1. Prepare a request-file for a certificate
    2. On a computer which is not a member of the Domain/Forest of the CA-Service: submit the request to the CA and receive the issued certificate. The following command have to written in one line without line breaks.
      certreq -submit
        -Username {domain}\{username}
        -p {password}
        -PolicyServer "https://{FQDN CertificateEnrollmentPolicyWebService-Server/-Alias}/ADPolicyProvider_CEP_UsernamePassword/service.svc/CEP"
        -config "https://{FQDN CertificateEnrollentWebService-Server/-Alias}/{CAName}_CES_UsernamePassword/service.svc/CES"
        -attrib "CertificateTemplate:{TemplateName}"
        {Enter Path and Name of the Request-File}
        {Choose Path and Filename for certificate}
       Sample:
       certreq -submit
            -Username contoso\Serviceaccount
            -p P@ssw0rd
            -PolicyServer "https://CAPolicyEnroll.contoso.com/ADPolicyProvider_CEP_UsernamePassword/service.svc/CEP"
            -config "https://CAWebEnroll.contoso.com/IssuingCA1_CES_UsernamePassword/service.svc/CES"
            -attrib "CertificateTemplate:MyOwnSSLTemplate"
            request.req
            sslcert.cer
    3. Now you can find a file with your requested certificate locally in path you have choosen for the certificate-file.
I hope this will be helpful for other people enrolling certificates on non-domain member computers.

how to recover my backups?? i used migration assistant but none of my old files showed up. I backed up daily and did a full disk back up twice

Open System Preferences and select Users & Groups. Assuming the migration was successful, you now have a new account - it was migrated. Migration Assistant doesn't copy files, it copies accounts. To see your documents you'll need to log into the account you migrated. (It has the same password it did on the other computer.)

  • How migrate from older time machine backup (not the latest)?

My old Snow Leopard Mac had a dying hard drive. In the last few days, files were disappearing left and right.
I bought a new Lion Mac, but I don't trust the Time Machine backup for the last few days and I would like to migrate the backup from just before the problems started.
I can't figure out any way to do this. Migration Assistant only offers to import the latest backup
And the full Time Machine Restore feature, which DOES allow you to pick a backup, only works on the original machine, which will not boot any more.
Can I somehow trick Migration Assistant by deleting the last few backups from the Time Machine drive and renaming the one I want to use to Latest? (I've made a copy of the entire Time Machine folder just in case...)
Any other way to do this? I'm sure many people are in this situation.

I have this same question.  My hard drive died, and the last few Time Machine backups appear to be incomplete or corrupted.  New hard drive installed now.  Migration Assistant and Setup Assistant first refuse to even recognize my backup drive, then insist on migrating data from the newest backup instead of an older (but definitely complete and reliable) backup.  So I haven't migrated anything and am still using my old (OS 10.4) computer until i get this straightened out.  Ideas?
