Migration BO5 to BOXI R3

Hi all,
We are trying to import an universe from BO5 to BOXI R3 with the import wizard, but when the tool tries to connect to the source system an fatal error is shown:

  • How migrate all mail (boxes and accounts) from 10.6.8 on Mavericks (without Migration Assistant)?

How migrate all mail (boxes and accounts) from 10.6.8 on Mavericks (without Migration Assistant)? Install the system (10.9.1) on a blank disk, copied the program and set up manually. Mail accounts and folders does not work to install and configure. Migration Assistant does not want to use, as it copies everything, and you only need to e-mail. Read a lot, but nothing works.

Try reindexing the mailbox. This can take awhile if you have a lot of mail.
    Reindex messages.
If that doesn't work try deleting MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded3.
    Quit the application.
You need to look in your user Library. Either hold down the option key while using the Finder “Go To Folder” command and select your user Library in your home folder or use the Finder “Go To Folder” command and enter ~/Library/Mail/V2/Mail Data/MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded3.  Move the file to your desktop.
Open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the file from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return thefile to where you got it from, overwriting the newer ones.
If you prefer to make your User library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.
    Show User Library
You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after I installed 10.8.5. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.

  • Migrating to different box

    Hi Guys,
We are shifting our prod server to different hardware(box) through backup restore method where OS and DB would be same and the same IP and hostname as that of our current prod server would be assigned to new hardware. As per my understanding we need to apply sap license after restoration. Is there anything else I need to take care of??
    Please advice.
    Regards,
    Mridul

    HI Imridul,
No. That's all you need to do. Just copy all your SAP from old machine to new one and rename your new hardware (to the same as the old one) and set same IP.
Apply new license since this new hardware would generate new hardware key.
I have already to this method several times and It works fine

  • The 'Third Party Connections' drop down box on the 'Source Database' step in the Migration Wizard is empty.

    Here are the environmental details:
    SQLDeveloper 32-bit Version 3.2.20.09 (Build MAIN-09.87)
Oracle Database:  12C single instance (no RAC)
    Oracle client:  12C 32 bit
    Windows 64 bit desktop
I am attempting to migrate an MS Access application to Oracle.  I pick the ‘Migrate’ selection from the ‘Tools’ Menu SQL Developer.  This puts me into the Migration Wizard.  When I get to the ‘Source Database’ step of the migration wizard, the ‘Choose the Third Party database from which you are migrating’  drop-down box is not being populated with the current available connections. It is empty.  If I type a valid connection name into the box, SQL Developer takes it on this screen but does not keep it for the next screen/step.  It has no persistence.  I even tried to make sure that each connection was open/connected before beginning the migration process.
Due to the fact that I am attempting to migrate an MSAccess application, I am mixing 32-bit and 64 bit software.  This may be the issue as to why the drop down is losing addressability.  I have not applied any patches to this version of SQL Developer.

    Hi,
If you need easy way to migrate Microsoft Access to Oracle probably it is more reasonable to review some tools specially designed to this purpose. For example:
Access to Oracle converter by Intelligent Converters
Access to Oracle converter by SpectralCore
Access to Oracle converter by Interface Computers
    Hope, this will help.
    Sincerely,
    Vlad

  • Migrating to SAP General Ledger (NewGL)  on a different box

We are looking at migrating to SAP General Ledger on a production system with over 150 company codes and 10 years of unarchived data. Since this results in pretty large database tables we are looking at several options to minimize business impact.
Among the available options, I have been told that it is possible to perform a migration from one box to another rather than in-place. I'm having trouble visualizing how transactional data from other modules (CO, SD, MM, PP etc) would be preserved in this case.
Can anyone tell me if migrating from classic GL on one box to new GL on another is possible? Does it really reduce downtime? If so, how does it achieve this time savings? What are the pitfalls of taking this approach? Can a box-to-box approach be taken without loss of non-GL transactional data?
    Thanks in advance,
    Paul

    Hi,
we migrated on 31st of march 2008 3 different 46c systems (AT, IN, CN) with 3 huge and a few small company codes into one ECC 60 system (using HR, SD, MM, PM, PP, QM, FI, CO). In ECC 60 we are using NewGL, document split, functional area reporting, PRCTR-wise balance sheets, segment reporting, FI/CO online integration, leding ledger IFRS, 2 non leading ledgers for every comp. code,...
The migration project was started a year before go-live the system downtime was only the 31st of march (one day) for each company code.
The main thing was, that we decided not to migrate any old transactional data to the new system but only the data (master data, open items, open PO's,...) thats needed.
So the old stuff remains still in the old system (FY-end closing was done there) and all comp.codes started the new fiscal year in the new system.
Due to the fact that many reporting issues where covered by business warehouse this ensured a continously reporting across the old and new system landscape and there was never a need to have "old" data visible in the new system.

  • Migrating from Local Database to OpenDirectory, and Migrating IMAP Boxes

I have a Xserve G5 running 10.4.11 and using a local (non shared) directory with all of my users on it. I'm planning to install a new Xserve (10.5.2) to use as a Fileserver and Filemaker Server, essentialy leaving the mail service to the G5. However, i want to use the OpenDirectory on the 10.5 server in order to maintain only one user database. I'Ve tested out the functionnalities and it looks like that there is no problems using the 10.5 OD with my 10.4 server, however, since 90% of my users are using IMAP mailboxes, i cannot migrate the database to the new users
    Example:
On the local directory of the 10.4 server, i have a user called Wiggum using IMAP mailbox, working fine. I tell my 10.4 to use the OD on the 10.5 server (user Wiggum already configured over there with the same settings, passwords) and when i remove the user from the local directory, leaving only the OD, the user is working OK, mail is working fine but i loose all contents of my IMAP box, i get only the new mails.
Is there a way to migrate the IMAP boxes from the users on the local directory when i migrate them to the new OD.

I would think the first shortname is different in OD vs. the local user. Thus, creating a second mailbox and this is why you see only new incoming mail.
Check if you have "duplicate" mailboxes. If yes, you could copy mail from one to the other and reconstruct the mail database.

  • MIGRATION AND UPGRADE NOT IN PLACE

    3) AIX 5.1 64b 9.2.0.6 64b
After reading the following notes: 210073.1 223521.1 159657.1 from Metalink.
I understand this is the migration path:
    a) 8.1.7 32b aix 433 32b -> move DFs(clone)-> 8.1.7 32b aix 5L 64b
    b) 8.1.7 32b aix 5l 64b -> migrate in place->9.2.0.6 64b aix 5L 64b

    d) 9.2.0.5 64b aix 5L 64b -> upgrade in place -> 9.2.0.6 64b AIX 5L 64b
    Here! I have some questions:
    - The obvious: THIS IS A RIGHT PATH!?
    - I really need open the database with 8.1.7.4 32b AIX 5.1 after upgrade to 9.2.0.6?
    - Could be possible, applies the upgrade directly on the 8.1.7.4 32b DFs on AIX 5.1?
    - The same questions to 9.2.0.5 64b AIX 4.3.3 64b.
    - Coexists with the pw-syscall64 (required for 8.1.7 32b AIX 5L) and the 9.2 software on AIX 5L.

    Hi Chris,
You are right sir, it is definitely an add-on install that requires a separate installation & license key, in order to utilize the functionality. I would see if the two notes that Sebastian suggested does the trick. However, I know you said they weren't installed previously, they might still reside down there and can at least get rid of the icon for you.
If that doesn't work, I would second your notion of what you stated, try to install the base 4.1 install first. My suggestion would be to uninstall it and clear out everything in the install directory, make sure nothing is left behind (If you're comfortable with it, I'd also suggest clearing out relevant entries in the registry. Some people don't like to do it, I'll only suggest it, if you're comfortable with it). Deploy the webapps into the Tomcat server, after the base 4.1 install, pull up the BI Launch Pad, and see if the same icon appears.
At least, this way, you can get an idea if something is going on with the base install versus the SP1 upgrade. If nothing else, until a definitive solution is found, you can always ensure that users don't have explicit permissions to that application.
Hopefully one of the two does the trick for you.

  • Data Migration from Microsoft Access to Oracle 9i

    Dear All
This is my first request in your forum,My problem is that I have installed SQL developer but unable to migrate my MDB (Microsoft access file) into Oracle 9i,I have done the following activities in order to migrate data.

in the access tab, input the following information
input connection name ,input mdb file name by using browse button, after this step click test button then the following message display 'test fail odbc microsoft access driver not a valid password
I have tried to create odbc link but i think i have done some thing wrong, kindly help
    Regards
    Zuhair

    Hi Zuhair,
If you give details of the problems you are still having then we should be able to get SQL*Developer to work.
However, if you don't want to use SQL*Developer then the following options are taken from note 393760.1 available in Metalink if you have access to that -
    1. Use a gateway that supports the non-Oracle database or generic connectivity if a third party ODBC driver is available to do a -
'create Oracle_table as select from non_oracle_table@database_link'
for each table. You would then have to manually create all the other objects (views, indexes, stored procedurs etc) and permissions etc that existed in the non-Oracle database.
    2. Use the SQL*Plus COPY command to copy data from the non-Oracle database to the
Oracle database using a gateway or generic connectivity. The syntax is as follows:
    COPY FROM username/password@oracle_sid -
    INSERT destination_oracle_table -
    USING query;
The following example selects all rows from the EMP table in the non-Oracle database and
inserts them into the local Oracle EMP table:
    COPY FROM SCOTT/TIGER@ora10 -
    INSERT EMP -
    USING SELECT * FROM SCOTT.EMP@gateway;
where "gateway" is the database link created for the gateway.
    3. Load the non-Oracle data into flat files and use SQL*Loader to put the data into Oracle tables. Again manual
work is required for the other objects.
    4. Contact the Oracle Product Technology Services (PTS) group for assistance. See the webpage -
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/migration//workbench/index_sqldev_omwb.html
    5. Use a third party migration tool. See -
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/migration/isv/third_party.html
    6. Use JDBC to connect to the non-Oracle database and Java in the Oracle database. This method will work but it is not suppported by the JDBC team.
    =========
The amount of work involved will depend on the number and size of Access tables that you want to migrate.
    Regards,
    Mike

  • Need migration and upgrade info.

    Hi
    I'm currently running CF 4.5 on a NT4.0 box. I need to
migrate to a box running Windows 2003 Server. Can anybody help
    answer the following questions?
1- Does CF4.5 support Windows 2003? If not, what is the
lowest version of CF that supports 2003 and is still being support
    by Adobe?
2- Does Adobe support cold fusion Upgrades or Migrations to
    2003.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ColdFusion 4.5 is not supported by Adobe at all. It has never
been tested with Windows 2003 as far as I know, so it might or
might not work properly in that environment. The lowest supported
version of ColdFusion that has been tested on Windows 2003 is
    ColdFusion MX 6.

  • Migrating a Mac license of CS5 Master Collection to a PC

Hi all. I've got a box copy of the CS5 master collection and a Mac that is old and failing quickly. I was required to purchase this computer for college and it has seen much use. Macs are expensive and a new one is not something I have the funds to allocate to. I'm going to be building a PC tower (boo, I know ) because I can get the most bang for my buck that way, and as I am one of those "starving artists" I don't have multiple hundreds of dollars to spend on a new license on top of the money it will cost to build a new work computer for myself. The cloud stuff isn't really an option either.
But I digress, my question is whether it's possible to migrate a Mac license of the suite to a PC (removing the programs from the Mac in the process)?
Apologies if this has been asked already. I was not able to find an answer in my Googling or searching of the Adobe forum (just ones pertainting to PC to Mac migrations). Thanks.

Boxed versions of Adobe products usually comes with cross platform applications and serial numbers.  This being the case, have you got the disks for windows in the box you bought?  If so then yes it is possible to install it on your new machine with those disks and serial number.
You can deactivate the product from Apple Mac and install and activate on your new Pc.  Please also note that you are allowed to install the product on two machines - laptop and a desktop but most people install it on two laptops or two desktops or laptop and a desktop.
    Hope this helps.

  • Migrating an application across versions

I have inherited an application developed under HTMLDB 1.6 which I want to migrate to a box running 2.0. Will the built-in export and import utilities work or is there some extra conversion I need to do?
    Thanks
    Andy

    Andy,
The file character set default is derived from the Database Access Descriptor character set. Obviously, for all 2.0 instances and later, this will always be Unicode UTF-8. The character encoding of the file is ultimately determined by the DAD character set.
It is a good suggestion to include as a comment in any export file the character set that was used to encode it. We will look at that for the next release of HTML DB. But your latter suggestion isn't practical, which we have thought of before. The file is uploaded as a binary object, to convert it to character, we need to know the source character set. So we could attempt to parse it as a binary file, but in multibyte and varying width character sets, that may prove difficult if not outright impossible sometimes.

  • Migration of Anwers  reports and Dashboard to different Machine

We are at very Inital level of development have created Repositories, Answers Reports and Dashboard on dev machine. Now i want to migrate to another box. So what are the files we will migrate. Please guide.

This one is based on TECHNICAL NOTE 369:
OBIEE: Migration from development to production environment.
    DEVELOPMENT SERVER:
    1. Stop Oracle BI Services
    2. Take backups of the most recent development files (for recovery purposes):

    b)Presentation Catalog:\OracleBIData\web\catalog\*
    c)NQSConfig.ini:          \OracleBI\server\Config\NQSConfig.ini
    3. If any Software registry strings were modified or added, export them.
    4. Take backups of any customized GIF, CSS, GSP, XSL, and XML files from
                        \OracleBI\oc4j_bi\j2ee\home\applications\analytics\analytics\res
                        \OracleBI\web\app\res\
for postinstallation replacement of like production files.
    PRODUCTION SERVER:
    5. Copy any customized folder/file structures especially those of step 2 and 4.
    6. Define necessary back-end database ODBC DSNs and/or native drivers required per repository Connection Pool(s) data source names definitions.
    7. If created, import the saved development registry export.
    8. Verify BI Server ODBC settings: There is an ‘Analytics Web’ ODBC System-DSN with the driver 'Oracle BI Server' installed on the Presentation Server box.
    9. Verify Presentation Catalog Path: OracleBIData\web\config\instanceconfig.xml
    10. Start Oracle BI Services
    11. Verify Dashboard Web connection.

  • Where can I find information on migrating from Business Objects 5 to XI R2?

We want to migrate several Business Objects implementations - some of which are Business Objects 5 and some Business Objects 6 to consolidate them into a XI R2 environment.
I have the document that describes migration from 6.x to XI R2 but what is the process for migrating from Business Objects 5. Do I need to migrate from 5 to 6 and then follow the 6.x to XI R2 migration?
Any pointers to additional hints and tips on migration or how to estimate how much effort is involved would also be welcome.
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi,
Following are the detailed steps for migration via Import Wizard:
1] Go to Start > Programs > Business Objects XI Release 2 > BusinessObjects Enterprise > Import Wizard.
2] The Welcome dialog box appears. Click Next.
    Setting source and destination environments:
3] In the Specify source environment dialog box, set the following:
u2022 Source: Business Objects Enterprise BO 6.5.x.
    u2022User Name:
    u2022 Password: visor
    BOMain key
Note: Do not check the Import Application Foundation contents option since you are not performing Performance Management migration at this time.
    Click Next.
4] The Warning page appears. Click Next.
Note: The source repository can store any file, not just supported agnostic documents. Since the BusinessObjects XI Release 2 architecture requires a plug-in for each file extension, it does not import unsupported files (for example, .zip files and as .svg documents used in corporate dashboards).
5] The Specify destination environment page appears. Set the:
u2022 Destination: Business Objects Enterprise BOXI R2
    u2022 User Name:
    u2022 Password:
u2022 Domain key file to: Default drive: \Business Objects\BusinessObjects Enterprise XI R2
    Click Next.
6] Select the types of objects you want to import in this stage of the importing process. At a later stage, you select the objects themselves.
    u2022 Select the option u2018Import universes u2018.
    Click Next.
7] Import options for universes and connections dialog box appears.
Select the third option: Import all the universes and connections that the selected Web Intelligence and Desktop Intelligence documents use directly.
8] The Please choose a merge scenario dialog box appears. Select I want to merge the source system to destination system and check the automatically rename top-level folders that match top-level folder on the destination system option.
    Click Next.
9] The Incremental Import dialog box appears.
You may need to import some objects more than once from the source repository to the destination repository.
In this situation, you have the following update options:
    u2022 Overwrite object contents
You select the types of objects for which the content overwrite applies:
u2022 Documents (including dashboards and analytics)
    u2022 Universes
    u2022 Connections
When you re-import an object, it will completely overwrite and replace the matching object (and its associated files) that you imported earlier.
    u2022 Overwrite object rights
When you re-import an object, its associated security rights will overwrite the rights of the matching object you imported earlier.
If you decided not to import security in the Security Migration Options dialog box, then the Overwrite object rights option is not relevant, and is therefore not available.
If you don't select any overwrite options, the matching object in the destination repository will not change when you try to import it again.
Note: This dialog box appears only if you select update as the import scenario.
    Click Next.
    10] Select the specific universe
    Click Next
11] Information Collection complete dialog box appears.
    Click Finish
12] Import Progress dialog box appears.
    Click Done
    Hope this helps !!
Please revert in case of any queries.

    Murray,
Apologies for referring to the 1.5 documentation but the 2.1 documentation still has the same information about creating a user to hold the repository.
You initially reported 2 problems -
    1. Locating source plugin...failed
    2. Checking multi-schema privileges...Privilege 'CREATE ROLE" is not granted with admin option.
For the first error have you installed the necessary JDBC driver ? I have just installed SQL*Developer 2.1 on a new laptop and could successfully connect following the documentation steps -

2.5.2 Before Migrating From Microsoft SQL Server or Sybase Adaptive Server
To configure a Microsoft SQL Server or Sybase Adaptive Server database for
    migration:
    1. Ensure that the source database is accessible by the Microsoft SQL Server or
Sybase Adaptive Server user that is used by SQL Developer for the source
connection. This user must be able to see any objects to be captured in the
Microsoft SQL Server or Sybase Adaptive Server database; objects that the user
cannot see are not captured. For example, if the user can execute a stored
procedure but does not have sufficient privileges to see the source code, the stored
    procedure cannot be captured.
    2. Ensure that you can connect to the Microsoft SQL Server or Sybase Adaptive
Server database from the system where you have installed SQL Developer.
    3. Ensure that you have downloaded the JTDS JDBC driver from
    http://jtds.sourceforge.net/.
    4. In SQL Developer, if you have not already installed the JTDS driver using Check
for Updates (on the Help menu), do the following:
    a. Click Tools, then Preferences, then Database, then Third Party JDBC Drivers.
    b. Click Add Entry.
    c. Select the jar file for the JTDS driver you downloaded from
    http://jtds.sourceforge.net/.
    d. Click OK.
    ========
The second error is again documented in the 2.1 documentation -
    5.99 Privilege Warning for Migration
This dialog box is displayed if you click Verify in the Quick Migrate box and the
database user for the connection does not have all privileges necessary for a
multischema migration. For multischema migrations, this user must granted the
RESOURCE role with the ADMIN option; and this user must also be granted the
CREATE ROLE, CREATE USER, and ALTER ANY TRIGGER privileges, all with the
    ADMIN option.
If you are performing a single-schema migration, you can ignore this warning.
    =====
Which errors are you now seeing and which user was used to hold the repository ?
If you are using GRAINTEST for the repository then create it using this syntax -
CREATE USER GRAINTEST IDENTIFIED BY password <=== change password as necessary
DEFAULT TABLESPACE users TEMPORARY TABLESPACE temp; <=== change tablespaces as necessary
GRANT CONNECT, RESOURCE, CREATE VIEW, CREATE PUBLIC SYNONYM TO
    GRAINTEST WITH ADMIN OPTION;
GRANT ALTER ANY ROLE, ALTER ANY SEQUENCE, ALTER ANY TABLE, ALTER TABLESPACE,
ALTER ANY TRIGGER, COMMENT ANY TABLE, CREATE ANY SEQUENCE, CREATE ANY TABLE,
CREATE ANY TRIGGER, CREATE ROLE, CREATE TABLESPACE, CREATE USER, DROP ANY
SEQUENCE, DROP ANY TABLE, DROP ANY TRIGGER, DROP TABLESPACE, DROP USER, DROP ANY
ROLE, GRANT ANY ROLE, INSERT ANY TABLE, SELECT ANY TABLE, UPDATE ANY TABLE TO
    GRAINTEST with admin option ;
then when making the migration make sure the Oracle connection is to this user.
Please update the thread with the errors you get after following these steps.
    Regards,
    Mike

  • HT201250 I am very frustrated. New to iMac products. Just bought a 27" iMac two days ago. Received no manual, no booklet with ID registration number, etc. Need help migrating PC to iMac. How do I get in touch?

Need help migrating pc to imac. Do not have manual. Trying to get infornation online, but, cannot get an answer.
I have downloaded pc migration assistant to pc windows 8 pro. Was able to get imac to finally give me "the number"
Did the same with pc received number once, not same as imac. Pop up window with info dissappers and cannot recover
What am I doing wrong? Paid extra for extended support package and it took hours to finally get it registered and approved.
However, no help. Yikes, I feel like a make another great mistake!

First: If you purchased AppleCare you should call back at 1-800-APL-CARE and ask for further assistance.  You'll want to learn how to retrieve your operating system version and your IMac's serial number as you'll need these for when you call AppleCare:
Click on the Black Apple in the top left hand corner of your Imac's physical monitor
Click on About this Mac from the drop down menu
Below the silver Apple and "OS X" it will say "Version 10.x.x"  (If this number is not 10.8.4, run Software Update by hitting the button marked "Software Update")
Click on this number twice in a row.  This is your machine's serial number.  (zeros can be used; the letter "O" is never used).
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1349 for details how to find serial numbers on Apple products
If you have an Apple ID (you can create one at appleid.apple.com), you can login to supportprofile.apple.com, register an Apple product, and sign up for VoicePass, which, if you give your product a name e.g. Maria's Imac, you can speak that over the phone and skip having to give the serial number when you call.
If you have an Apple ID, you can also call AppleCare and ask them to activate VoicePass.
This is the link for your tech specs: http://support.apple.com/kb/SP667
This is the link for your quick start guide: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/imac_late2012_quickstart.pdf
This is the link for important product information: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/imac_late2012_quickstart.pdf
Second: this is an educated guess: Your new Imac and your PC need to be either on the same wifi network or you need to connect them physically with an Ethernet cable (available at Radio Shack, Wal Mart, etc).  My guess is that they are not, and so your IMac and PC are not talking to each other.  That might be why you are seeing a different code on the PC.
Time Machine would not be relevant to your issue.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4796 is the link to relevant instructions, however it left out some housekeeping you should do on your Imac before you begin a migration
Run Software Update on the IMac to confirm that the latest updates are installed.
On the IMac, make sure that you have the latest versions of any third-party software.
On the source Mac, open System Preferences, click Sharing, and make sure there is a name in the Computer Name field.
Do not let either computer go to sleep while you are attempting to migrate. To disable sleep on the IMac
Choose System Preferences from the Apple () menu.
Choose Energy Saver from the View menu.
Adjust the "Computer sleep:" slider to Never. (Change this back after the migration is done).
You can adjust "Display Sleep" to a few minutes - this won't affect the migration
Uncheck the box if checked next to "Put Hard Disks to sleep when possible"
I don't know Windows 8 but this link looks promising as to how to disable sleep: http://techmell.net/how-to/disable-enable-sleep-mode-hibernate-windows-8/
Once you've done this, either connect both Mac and PC to the same wifi network and surf the web with each to confirm that connection is working - or connect them to each other with an Ethernet cable.
Then relaunch Migration Assistant on your Imac and your PC, and follow the instructions in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4796 starting with your IMac, or call AppleCare back.
Understand that if you have further issues, you'll need to help AppleCare help you by:
walking them through the steps you've taken in Migration Assistant
letting them guide you as they isolate the issue to either:
    The Imac's software
    The IMac's hardware
    The PC's software
    The PC's hardware
Firewall settings (maybe - especially if 3rd party firewalls are installed)
    The wifi connection, if used
    The ethernet connection, if used
I think the issue is likely what I guessed, or it's a software issue.
To learn more about your new Mac, I recommend this link: http://www.apple.com/support/imac/intel/
    And this book: http://www.amazon.com/books/dp/0789749890
I am a technical support professional who troubleshoots Macs all day long.  I do this for a living.  The book above is the most accurate, and easy to understand book I've seen with respect to using Mountain Lion and its various applications.  It's for a MacBook but the focus is on the software which is why I recommend it.
Don't feel like you have to rush to upgrade to OS X Mavericks.  In fact, you should always confirm both all the hardware and software you use is compatible with any new operating system before you upgrade.  And ask yourself: "why do I need it now?"  Because it's new is not a good answer.
In the future, specifying any troubleshooting others have done will help those on these boards help you.  Also, don't let a specific issue lead you to assume you've made an all-encompassing mistake.  It's just one issue, and it's resolvable.
And everyone else: giving a dozen recommendations for reading will only leave the petitioner bewildered.  Start with three.  And try responding with a hypothesis as to what's causing the primary problem!
