Miro Footage White Balance

When I view .cine files in SpeedGrade that were recorded with any other Vision Research Phantom camera, the files have the correct white balance information. When I view .cine files from the new Miro 320S, the footage looks very green, almost as if SpeedGrade is ignoring the red and blue white balance values. Will there be a fix for this soon? I can provide Adobe with Miro files if needed.

Actually there are no LUTs / Matrix for Phantom Miro yet. When you open Miro Footage in SG, it reads out the pure RAW informations (looks bit greenish).
What you can do: shoot a colorchart and use our colorchart tool >timeline>Colorspace.
Or write your own luts for tungsten/daylight.

  • Color correcting auto white balance footage

    I shot some video yesterday and at the time of the shoot, I made sure to set my white balance, however after looking at the footage I notice the color temperature slightly shifts constantly. I don't know why this happened, but it's too late to investigate, my project is due in less than a week.
    The good news is that I've realized that that there's a white object in the bg of the shot the entire time that is pure white so i could color correct by setting that as the white point in FCP. The only problem is that since it shifts every 3 seconds or so i would have to keyframe a LOT. Is there any plug-in or application that will let me track that white object in the background so it can set a custom white points for every frame?
    Running Final Cut Pro 6.0.2
    PS: I found Avid has auto color correction -- basically what I'm looking for I guess. Unfortunately I don't have Avid.

    there's no auto color correction feature directly in FCP
    there are 3rd party plugs to allow you to track objects but i'm not aware of any way to link that to a color correction

  • Help !!! .. SERIOUS white balance issue, footage is yellow !!

    Hello guys,
    Im an avid reader of these forums but never actually posted. We shot some motorsport this weekend however something happened in terms of white balance on one of the cameras.
    The footage has a VERY yellow cast ... We are still injesting at the moment so i've not tried to fix it as yet however I've attached a couple of pics to show you the difference. Bizarrely both these shots are from the same camera, we aren't sure if the operator did something or just that the camera had a 'moment' however the yellow footage is unfortunately the finals .. and key to the piece we are producing.
    Any advice or help would be very appreciated.

    apply the three way color corrector to a bad shot. double click it in the timeline to open it in the viewer. go to the graphical interface. Next to the wheel on the right is a little eyedropper or whatever-- not in front of my edit system- sorry. Find a piece of what you know to be white in the shot, make sure it is NOT blown out, but properly exposed. Click that with the eyedropper and you should magically get close not exact to the good footage. Whatever you do will be a compromise. Get used to it.

    What is the best way to correct white balance shifts post production.
    If shooting underwater, there is either a big jump to very blue, or to red.
    Will I have to select different underwatercolour ranges and correct them each, or is there an easier way?
    Is it best to use 3 way colour corrector, or other effects, or a combo?
    I also have Adobe after effects 6.5, is there something in there recommended, as superior?

    Underwater footage is fascinating stuff but it will not necessarily respond to conventional color correction. Unless properly lit, filtered or balanced the colors simply do not exist; there's no color data to correct.

    The loss of color is deceiving. The human brain compensates for much of the color loss and even at depths below 30 feet, your eyes will still see some red. But a fact which we must understand is that the camera is really dumb. It has no brain, so therefore it will not compensate. To overcome this problem, artificial light sources must be used.< </div>
    When working in water with a greenish tinge, as in the west coast of our continent from Seattle north to Vancouver Island, a magenta filter will produce good results. For blue caribbean waters, I always prefer my red color correction filter. < </div>
    POST PRODUCTION FILTERS. As in topside video work, occasionally we misjudge the lighting conditions and must attempt a repair within Final Cut Pro. There are a few filters in the browser which I have discovered work well with underwater video footage. The Proc Amp filter can be used to put some vibrancy into an otherwise washed out shot. The RGB Balance filter is another which if used sparingly can save an otherwise interesting piece of footage from the cutting room floor.
    But these filters are definitely no substitute for getting it right in the first place. The best angle of attack is to concentrate on the basic principals of lighting so that your footage can go untouched from the camera to the timeline.<

  • Help requested with White Balance

    This may come as a surprise to many, but here I am requesting your help, instead of giving it.
    I have filled out a feature request with the following content, already some time ago:
    Would it not be nice to be able to extract the WB settings in K  from the metadata and be able in post to change it to what you should have done during the shoot.
    Say your WB is set to 5600 K, you can extract that from the metadata and with the White Balance effect you can enter a desired setting of say 6100 K. During the shoot you can do that with the Canon XF series, but if you have forgotten to use a warm card instead of the white balance card, this would be a great effect to have. Or in the situation where you simply want a shot to be slightly cooler or warmer, this would be a great feature.
    Interface similar to the scale slider and fully keyframeable. The program monitor should reflect changes in color temperature immediately. Simple, easy to understand, like using a set of Warm Cards after the shoot.
    Retrieval of the color temperatures should not be difficult. It is contained in the metadata:
    It works both with AWB and manual for the XF series. If the camera does not record these data, the effect should be greyed out.
    I request your help to get this feature implemented, since it is pretty simple to implement, is a great help to have when doing multicam work, to fine tune different cameras or to change the atmosphere of a shot. It is far easier than the color correction effects we already have.
    If you agree with me, please fill out a similar feature request. The more requests made, the greater the chance of it being implemented.

    Harm, I've seen instances of multi-cam shoot cameras that were identical models, using a clone of the settings which still resulted in differences in color.  I've seen this blamed on the chips and the chip manufacturing process.  I've also seen multicam footage from analog cameras that were supposedly balanced before shooting that resulted in shifts.  And then, you have a situation where the atmospherics can alter the color, such as when one camera is close to the action, and the distant camera is shooting through fog or haze that has light shooting through it.
    So again, while you can get in the ballpark with certain regimes, when it comes time to finish, you have to trust your eyes.
    So, for my situation, it's not something that rises to the level of something I'd use enough to warrant a feature request.
    My biggest issue today is that I'd love to see Pr offering bottom-up rendering, the way Avid MC offers it with its Render All option vs. Smart Rendering, which is top down.  I don't like that I have to re-render entire sequences just because I made a little change to an upper layer clip.  That, to me, warrants a concerted campaign or pitchfork mob.
    But, I'll make a pact with you.  If you'll request bottom up rendering, I'll request WB metadata support, OK?

  • Can I keyframe white balance?

    I have a piece of footage that shifts white balance during the shot and i need to be able to keyframe the change as it happens, but the color panel does not allow me to do this? i know i can do it with hue/saturation filter but it's just not accurate enough. does anyone have any suggestions?

    I know, i was hoping the color correction would move more towards photoshop, not coral draw! no levels keyframe or even brightness contrast.. just hue/saturation and a bunch a useless funky dunky filters! I had a sweet spot a few hours ago where i thought i might be able to get things done on this and as soon as i got serious the app just cracked and fell about my feet on the floor. really don't want to go back to 7 but i think i'm going to have to. they've basically designed it for third party products to make money selling through the app store, and they're not out yet.

  • White Balance Plug In

    Can someone advise me on a plug in for a quick method of setting white balance when you did not get footage with correct white balance? Also can you set keyframes for changing the white balance in a multi-cam clip?

  • White Balance and other Mayhem

    This past weekend I was shooting as usual when unexpectedly for several minutes, it was “open season”, anything goes color wise so the footage from that segment is filled with totally inappropriate tints, hues and false coloration like all of the sudden the white balance went haywire amongst other factors.
    Then, thrown in for good measure the lighting keep shifting from light to dark to light.
    Accordingly, my questions are these:
    My goal is to somehow salvage these minutes if it isn’t too much work assuming it can be made to look right. The problem is all of my color correcting experience to date has been solely with digital photography. I have none at all with Premiere and CS3 which appears to eb very involved and complex comparatively speaking. Is there a solution that a newbie to color correction could pursue to some level of success at least as a viable starting point that anyone care to share and explain in some detail?
    Does CS 3 have any autofixes or functions exclusively recommended for white balance issues?
    For example digital photo editing programs have sliders named just that or maybe they’ll be split between temperature and another associated parameter.
    Thanks as any information, suggestions or advice acquired will be used to learn and grow.

  • White Balance Why ?

    Hello All, I am by professional standards a beginner videographer of about 5 years experience. I have seen lots of advice around saying set your white balance for this or that lighting. I film a lot of theatre shows with lots of vivid colour, when I used auto white balance the colours were always wrong different shades ETC so I bought a grey card and set my white balance using this and the colours now look very similar to what I am filming. My question is why would you change your white balance according to lighting ? surely once it is set correctly you want it to accurately reflect what the camera is seeing.

    I seldom have the opportunity to do a manual white balance at stage shows, because when I arrive to set up cameras, the house lights are on and the curtain closed and I have no access to the "actual show lighting" until the show is going. So I just use the "Incandescent" setting on all cameras and that has worked well for me. Lighting can and will change throughout the show also, so at least if all cameras are set the same, the color is consistent and I can make tweaks when editing.
    Of course, when I have the opportunity I will always go for the manual white balance (or preset that looks good) for best results.
    Different light sources (sunlight, overcast, incandescent, flourescent, etc.) all have different color "temperatures". Some are warmer (redder), some are cooler (more blue), and so forth. I vaguely remember some of this from sixtth-grade science class, with "kelvin" numbers and such. The human eye compensates for this automatically and always see white objects as white, and other colors then follow suit. Video cameras are not so good at this - AWB attempts it, but doesn't always get it right. That is why the presets and manual option, to TELL the camera, THIS IS WHITE. Once it is calibrated to what "white" is, then all the colors look correct under that particular light source.
    To a degree, footage shot with the wrong WB can be corrected during editing, but often it can be so far out of whack that it never looks quite right. There is no substitute for getting it right when shooting! If someone looks like a blueberry or a sun-burned Martian on tape, good luck getting a nice skin tone in post....

  • White Balance Shift 3200 to 5600

    Hallo,
    We have material from one shooting done with three Panasonic DVX100AE, Unfortunatly, two cameras were set to 5600, on camera to 3200 white balance. Is there a way to converte the whole material from the "3200 camera" to 5600 ? Using the "try and error methode" with 3colour correction has not given satiesfying results yet. I´m wondering if there are any standard values known for that purpose that I could just write in the numberfields in 3cc ? Or is there a plug in available, that could do the job ?

  • White balance setup error on multi-camera shoot. Help!

    On a three-camera shoot two cameras had white balance set to auto, one was misset to daylight. Footage was shot both exterior and interior. How do we (newbies) correct or minimize the damage in Premier Pro CS6 for this short class project if reshooting is not an option?

  • Does any1 know how to color correct for white balance/color grade?

    hey wasup guys just finished my 1st music video now i need 2 color correct & color grade. i willl be making the video black & white so i was told i need 2 get rid of any color cast in my footage. i 4got 2 set the white balance on my 7d when i was shooting sum sceens so i could use any help possible like what is the best color corrector to use or how to white balance my footage any help is greatly appreciated thanks.

    Check the basics and do a Google search. The first three listed will be videos, the next link points to the Adobe Help files.
    The basic tools are the same as in Photoshop but there are a bunch of 3rd party plug-ins out there that make the job easier. If you run one of the tutorials found in your Google Search and are stuck get back to us.

  • White Balancing a Dslr

    Guys, I;m trying to figure out something with my canon T3i, my intended aim after to recording my footage is to color correct it and grade afterwards in Post Production, to somewhat give it that cinematic/film look in terms of its color.
    I know most people say to shoot with the camera in a flat profile, but i want to know after setting  a flat profile, do I still need to white balance the camera? Or should I just factory reset the camera and then set the flat profile, use one of the custom white balance in the camera depending on what I'm shooting and then shoot the footage?
    Because I run into so many problems when I try to white balance these Dslr's using the a white paper or something.

    The Profile and white balance are two different things.
    The picture profile involves sharpening, contrast, brightness, saturation and hue.
    White balance is removing unwanted color casts.
    You do not want to do that in post, maybe slight corrections.
    How to set white balance is explained in the manual. At least in mine (Nikon).
    Besides the camera comes with a whole bunch of white balance preset.
    If you know the color temperature of the lighting you can set a Kelvin value.

  • Correcting White Balance with no white in shot

    Does anyone have any tips for correcting white balance when the footage has no white objects to act as a reference? This was the classic mistake of shooting outdoors with an indoor setting. We were rushing to utilise a gap in the rain!
    Also, is there any way to tell Premiere how to correct WB via a sort of colour matching, by pointing it towards a correctly white balanced still of the scene?

    This is a really tricky thing. There's a lot of ways to approach it. I had similar problems with a WB correction mismatch between presets on my 7D and 70D. No white in either shot.
    I exported a few frames in to PS first to get a rough idea with what I was dealing with.
    Use the Info window to check something grey.
    Alternately, if there is nothing grey, you can use skin tone patches. This is a common tool used by skin retouchers in PS. Grab a small sample or two from the desired skin tones, either from a 5x5 grab with the eyedropper or just grabbing a small section with the lasso tool and Gaussian Blurring that to heck and back. Once you get a bit of a palette of skin tones you like, you can use that as a reference for your work with the Fast Color Corrector.
    To be honest, I feel the FCC is a little underpowered and I wish I had my AAVC 6 Channel HSL tool from Vegas when color correcting.
    As a Photoshop geek, I am a little uncomfortable with the video color correction toolset.
    To export a frame, click on the viewing panel and hit Ctrl-Shift-E.
    Try opening the frames in Adobe Camera Raw and you can get some temp and tint values that can also help you with your Prem Pro toolset.
    Remember to watch out for channel clipping when making dramatic changes in WB.

  • Incorrect white balance ?

    I recently shot a wedding and about 10 mins of the footage I shot outside I had forgotten to redo my white balance settings on my Sony z1.
    Therefore this 10 mins of footage is very bright and glarery and I'd like to correct this.
    I've tried colour corrector but not getting much joy.
    Anyone got any suggestions that might aid me in this task?

    White balance controls the color temperature and color balance of your image. Your description sounds as if the luminance is too high. Use the Color Corrector filter and try the mids slider. You might also try the gamma filter. Generally over-exposed material is hard or impossible to control. Once it's blown out there is little information left in the image to pull back. Often all you can do is reduce the levels so it's not too bright, but that often makes the image appear muddy.
